Nothing wrong with starting again with better knowledge and perspective, I did it 3 times before arriving at what I have now.
Looking forward to the progress of the new one.
I think you have a good layout with this one but it will be interesting to see what you come up with next
I’m not going to lie, I shudder every time I hear someone say they are restarting their layout. That said, good for you!!! It has been also said that a model railroad is never finished. With the experience you have, it will go fast, and you’ll be up and running trains again! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for yourself and us!!! Thanks for sharing. Be blessed!!!!
Yeah I almost didn’t want to but I go by the saying that if you don’t like something change it, if you can’t, be quite about it haha. Thank you for the kind words!
On the next layouts you should have a locomotive shed and fuel pump.
I do plan to have one on the new one! I love engine sheds
I agree
Dang, I swear this is the 3rd or 4th time I think you’ve restarted. Not trying to be a jerk but maybe next time really really think through what you’re going to build. Honestly wasting a ton of money and time starting over all the time. That being said, good luck and look forward to your next build!
I just went through your entire series on this build today. Along the way you made great progress as soon as you dropped replicating pictures and letting your mind build. While at same time using pictures to help build that mind. It's very sad you gave this up very quickly. I think as you said in this video, a lesson for you for next build is, don't give up quickly. The mistakes you pointed out about rail not painted, and not going in front of window (I mean if you want a loop, you have to do that...), and track plan. Do not be discouraged to tear up your track and ballast and grass.I think that is what you had the issue on in your yard. Your radius out of the yard to do your loop with the 'L' shape layout, you cut yourself short. Also decide on if you want to see mainline running, or do you want switching ops. Felt like you kept not deciding what you wanted as you went on more. You had the whole other section of your 'loco shop' location to have many industries for switching. But in the end, seems you wanted a loop and more time and proper plans. So i respect tearing down hard work to start over and build what you really want.
Excited to see your next build, because you REALLY had a great one here. Also, please use online shopping more.. Was so sad to see you go to a store and not find what you want at that piss poor selection. I get it for video content and all going in a store. But you paying some top dollar on those switches and other cars and scenery stuff by not buying at hobby shops online...
Best of luck!
I really appreciate the thoughtful response to my videos, it means a lot! I do agree with a lot that your saying. This next layout I plan to do both a loop and focus on industries. And also not giving up so quickly this time around haha. Thanks for the feedback!
I’m excited. You are only going to get better. I’m rooting for you
Thanks Daniel!
Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. Good luck to your next layout!
As a 13 and almost 14 year old, I have been looking at as much model railroad material as possible. And I'm excited to build my double loop layout with a few switches and 2 industries. Thank you for all the inspiration and great information on how to get a layout set up.
That’s awesome! Sounds like you got a good plan too! Thanks for watching too
Yeah I'm just hoping to get some money on my birthday this week so I can buy the stuff I need!
Happy early birthday! Hopefully you do so you can get started 😎
@@TopRailroad thanks ☺️
@@bryceblazegamingyt9741I’m excited for you. I’m hoping to build a track plan soon.
My son and I are looking forward to seeing your new train layout. We have been building one since last December. We really enjoy your videos! Hope all is well!
Thanks that’s very kind! That’s awesome that your building a layout with your son, great way to spend time together!
a layout is never finish and you always whant it better
...At least you are testing out what you can do with a layout, so I don't really mind the restarting of the layout. Can't wait for the new layout!
Thank you!
Sometimes change is good! You've come far and gained more than you'll lose! On to TopRailroad 2.0!
I agree change is good!
I started over 4 times !!! 😂 I still have not permanently mounted my track and have no ballast. I use hot glue on the outside of the track in small spots. After the amount of work it took cleaning the track. I decided to run my layout for a while before any permanent gluing.
I’m glad I’m not alone in doin this then 😂
I was really enjoying this build, but I'm definitely going to stick around and see what you have coming up!
Even though you stopped uploading for a month I am still here and waiting for a new video to appear! Can't wait to see what the future for this growing channel to be!
Thank you! That means a lot! I should have a video out by this Friday on the new layout :)
@@TopRailroad Cant wait to see it!
I'm in the same position with my little layout! Keen to see what's next!
On the next layout, you should have a being demolished depot that’s 3/4 destroyed
Thank you
Looking forward to seeing the new build come together.
Been a minute since we have heard from you. Can’t wait for the next video. I just started redoing my 4x16 layout and making a 8x14 open center layout. Keep up the awesome work.
I should hopefully upload in the next week! But that’s awesome, that’s a good size to do a lot and get tons of industries
@@TopRailroad great. Look forward to your videos. I’ll end up with a lot of flexibility with the layout for sure. Wish I was as good as you at filming and editing.
You can do it just takes practice!
I'm redoing some of my modules also. Same reason too. Learning a lot that I didn't know before and doing different processes. Plus a lot of fun!! 👍
Makes me feel better thank you. And true it’s all fun!
OH WELL….on to the next your next masterpiece 😊
I sure hope you're going to keep this same string/link for you next layout. I love how low key you are on this and look forward to you extension. I had to tear down my layout and am starting new. Your ideas are great inspiration. keep it up
I’m not sure what you mean by string/link. But thank you I appreciate it! That’s awesome starting a new layout is always exciting
WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HUH??????????
You have bush on your layout!!! Sweet man!
I'm peteretheneys son the train layout is going well bye BTW nice train layout
Thank you!
Ouch !!!! but we learned so much .. I credit you with the ability to take down and start new as you are doing .. We cant wait to see your new ideas ...
Thank you as always!
Never be afraid to start over. And while it may not be half the battle, planning in advance is very important.
Very true
I can't recommend enough...Anyrail...trust me...you will be amazed and have so much fun in the process! Looking to see what you come up with!
This time around I’ll check it out and see what I can make up on there! Thanks for the recommendation
Been there, done that. :( A tough lesson to learn.
Think of the layout as a body. You have to make sure the skeleton is perfect before you add muscles or skin.
t’s only a mistake if you don’t learn from this. Good luck.👍
Good way to look at it. Thank you
Nice video mate. Having a set track plan is probably one of the most important things when building a layout. Look forward to the next layout build series. - Nicholas.
Thanks Nicholas 😁
😯😥😫🤐
Good luck on your new layout man! I'm sure it will be awesome. Thank you so much for sharing with us. These layouts and dioramas are works of art really. And if you ask any artist, they will always be apprehensive to say their work is "done". Just keep manifesting that layout in your head and let us watch. 😉🐱🌲🏡🌳🏭🚂
Thanks man! I agree, I will for sure keep manifesting the layout to come soon 😁
You should make a mountain with a tunnel in the next layout and add a passage train to the layout
That’s a good idea!
@@TopRailroad you can also do is add a turn table, a town, a bridge, a river, and a waterfall
Yup, when you start out and take the "strive for excellence" path, your going to go through a l o t of layouts before you get something your going to be happy with. I only really started getting back into the hobby in 2018 and have gone though about 14 N scale layouts of all varying stages of completion before scrapping after I felt there was something fundamentally problematic with the design that needed a complete do over. Though of course never let it affect anything and if anything always try to incorporate something you've never tried before into the next iteration.
Very well put. Glad I’m not the only one who likes the change there mind a bunch haha
Been there dude. Totally get it. I am on my 4th layout design in the last 18 months
Seems like a lot are in the same boat. Makes me feel better haha
It’s always a challenge to choose between operations and staging vs. wanting to have continuous running. I hope you will find a happy medium.
Very true, continues running and operations are the plan for the new one
There’s a lot to be said for someone who is self-aware and can appreciate the learning experience - I’m glad you started over now, instead of sticking with a layout that didn’t make you happy.
Just make sure this layout is bigger and better… lol.
😂
Thanks for the kind words man! This one technically should be bigger lol
Hey mate brave move. Good luck with the new layout👍. Looking foward to the updates.
Appreciate it David 🤙🏼
Do not feel bad of redoing it again.
I'm still working out my bench work on mine still, its been slow with the price of lumber here in Canada
Lol!!! I rebuilt mine a bunch. One thing I learned as a model railroader is you can always start over. I get it! Can’t wait to see what’s next? I will update my layout soon. A lot has changed since my last update. And I’m debating starting over because I miss seeing it go around continuously. But switching is a lot fun.
Thank you haha that makes me feel a lot better. I just subbed to your channel and watched you last update. Super awesome setup you got. And yeah that was a big reason for restarting mine. Nothing better then watching a train continuously go and go
Thank you I appreciate it!! I’ve completely changed it since then. We learn from our mistakes. The only reason why I want to start over is that I really wanted all micro engineering track and switches. But for now I’m going to finish it and then rebuild it to go continuously and be able to switch my industries. Good luck on the new build!!!
It must have been a very difficult decision to change course with all the time, effort and expense you must have put into it! I know for just me, I looked very forward to seeing this to completion and it truly is a bummer for me personally learning the layouts fate after following for 6 months! :) I look forward to the next work of art...love your vids - very peaceful to watch, and I just LOVE your cat
Yeah it was a difficult decision but I just knew down the line I was gonna do it. But wow thanks for watching since the beginning! And thanks for the kind words
Keep up the great work, fully understandable 😎
It's cool to see this channel grow. I think I started watching your vids when you decided to do a switching layout Instead of a traditional loop, but I watched your vids before I started the hobby and I gotta say I've been in a similar boat. Mostly I didn't know what scale to choose I bought a hornby starter set thinking I liked british stuff a lot and I guess I do but I returned it and got into o guage, but now I'm starting to dabble in modern Ho LOL. So I guess I'm in a similar boat. I guess just think about what you like and keep shooting for it.
Thanks man! Yeah it’s tough to decide things in this hobby sometimes haha I like HO scale though it’s a good size I think
You’re crazy what a… oh, better track plan? Loop? Bigger and better, good for you. Looks like your cat was upset with the idea. ;)
Yes hopefully all that haha. If I’d had to say, he probably was upset it’s gone 😂
I had a hunch the layout was gonna change. I have yet to even start building my tables for my layout. I do have all the wood ready just waiting to borrow a chopsaw. Unfortunately I notice the tiles on the basement floor are popping off so I assume fixing that should be slightly higher priority than a train set.
That’s exciting! Yeah the foundation is important or you’ll haven’t more problems later on
You do what you have to do I know that your new lawyer will come out better than ever and can't wait to see you next week's episode🙂
I appreciate it! Thanks for understanding haha
hello, I have redone the layout 5 times, it is always improving, you are great.
Thanks man! Glad I’m not the only one haha
I’ve done the same exact thing. ✊🚂🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
When I had to start over my last layout was modular and I never glue down the actual foam board to the plywood itself so if ever I have to move or start over the sections can be saved and I usually do no longer than 4-5 foot each section and I don’t really like the look of extremely wide sections unless you have the room to do something large like a natural land helix. Hope your next one is what you are looking to replicate!
I was only able to save two modular sections and even those were cut down, but it saves a lot when restarting
That’s a good idea, I only used a little tacky glue this time around so the foam luckily popped off easily. Gotta save as much as you can
@@TopRailroad I don’t even wanna think of the amount of wood I’ve wasted throughout 5 of the previous 6 layouts. The 3 go around was a mess. Way more wood than needed and a track plan that made little sense. But I also wasn’t into proto ops then either
When are you starting the next layout??? I can’t wait to see it, I love your content
I already have actually! I’ll be uploading tomorrow the first episode
subbed. looking forward to your next adventure
Thank you!
I'm using Kato unitrack ho scale for my layout. Saves me from having to use ballast. Hope the new layout turns out good.
Yeah that does save the a lot of time and is much easier then doin all the ballasting
You should try and find some prototype trackage, or section of a branchline, industrial area, etc. that insterests you and build your plan around that. Get the plan 80-90% finalized, maybe set some track up without gluing it or lightly glue it with elmers (Lance Mindheim method) and test run the ops to see if it works, makes sense, interests you. If its based off a prototype, you can always go back and refer to it. Having a 'loose' plan is tough as it seems to constantly change and you get stuck in that analysis paralysis phase. Good luck, interested to see what you do next
I’m definitely gonna take your advice with the next layout. I appreciate the tips and the great comment! I also watch your videos on your layout and think it’s coming along fantastic. Gonna use it as inspiration for mine
@@TopRailroad Thanks! Luckily I had my layout designed, I tried my own with N scale and just could never get anywhere!
That’s awesome! Help with this kind of thing goes a long way
Hello. I've been following your channel since last year and I enjoy your content. It's sad to see your current layout go but excited to see what you have in store. Regarding the ballast, you can find fine, medium or coarse grit at home Depot and it's $10 for a 10 lb box. Can't beat that price and you can stain the grit any color.
Wow thank you! And I appreciate the tip too for the cheaper ballast!
Well man what do you think the new layout will look like I'm excited to see it.
if you are doing the whole layout from scratch, you can try to make analog railroad switches using relays. on my mockup I did such a thing and it works well.
I’ll look into those, if there beyond me I might go with regular hand throws lol
I think this was a better layout then your 4x8 going to miss it. That said on to bigger and better. Can wait for next week.
I agree! Thanks man
YOU'RE CRAZY WHAT ARE YOU DOIN!!!!!!!!!!
Haha just kidding. You know what they say: third times a charm!
I sure look forward to seeing progress on the new layout! Since you know so much now, everything will probably go A LOT faster.
😂😂
True 3rd times a charm. And yeah this next time I’ll know so much more which will make it faster. Thanks as always man!
@@TopRailroad Are you planning on getting any new engines anytime soon? And if so, what type do you think you would want?
Possibly someday, I know I have to spend a lot to get the new one goin so it might be awhile lol. If I do I’ll probably get another Dash 9 or modern BNSF engine for the main line.
@@TopRailroad Good idea. Maybe you should get a gevo, they look good in HO
WTF dude? That's the SECOND time you pulled out before you finished the job.
WHY THIS WAS SO GOOD AND NOW ITS NOT
YOU'RE CRAZY WHAT ARE YOU DOIN!!!!!!!!!!
Tell myself that on the daily i do. lol
😂😂 We’re all a little crazy and that’s okay as long as your a good person lol
You should add to your new layouts a river and turntable
Good ideas! Turntables are awesome
you should do something like a western layout or something to do with steam trains
That would be cool but I’m too stuck on modern era stuff haha
Not again 😭
I know 😅 The next will be so much better though trust me
You should add some elevations on your next layout
How's the new layout going? Anything new? Been missing having my Friday highlight video lol
Well I haven’t started yet sadly haha I’ve just been super busy and idk when I’ll start it up
When is the next video coming out
I’m not sure yet sadly, been really busy but I’ll try to do an update soon
Maybe you should have done more research before laying the track or just laying the track first and then playing with the layout before doing any scenery etc.. I have been researching for many months so far and am just about to lay track in a temporary layout to see how I like it or Not.. I get a lot of my stuff second-hand from eBay and local second-hand dealers which is a lot cheaper than paying full price for new stuff.. yes new is nice but second-hand is 1/3 of the price and you can do a lot more with the extra money........ also consider a turntable which is great for turning engines around and storage for other engines as you get them.
Hey I has a question when you new layout maybe new engine storage in the workshop and I hope you get brand new engine bnsf soon coming up
Don’t get rid of the cat pulese!!!😢
He will be staying 😂😂
@@TopRailroad 😂🤣
Do you know what the new track plan will be?
Not yet but soon hopefully! Just been busy
I understand you’re rebuilding what turned out to be a disaster (no loop) but it’s hard to imagine you didn’t think it this in the beginning. But that’s life …
when are you going to make your next layout?
I’ve actually began the build today! Won’t be along till episode 1 comes out :)
been a month man! give us an update im on edge over here lol
Haha I know I’m sorry! I’ll be starting my new layout soon hopefully! I appreciate the support man 😁
@@TopRailroad 3rd times a charm. lets get this loop going 🤩
Why are you taking it apart? To build it bigger and make a loop
Pretty much, I just wasnt as happen with this setup anymore
@@TopRailroad are you gonna make a loop switching layout next
I’m not sure if you have any track planning software but that can be a huge help
I have a software I use though so if you need help figuring out possible track plans, coming up with ideas or whatever feel free to hit me up
Happy to help come up with a plan if you need it
Thank you for the offer! I appreciate it. If I do need help with that I will ask
I hope that you will not delete the video's that you have already made.
I’ll never delete my old videos, they’ll be here forever! :)
@@TopRailroad Thanks 😀
Bro you stop permanently... Dont start over again 🤣🤣
😊 video coming soon?
Sadly not this week. I’ve been busy and haven’t even started yet haha. But should be soon 😁
When is the next video coming
I’m not sure yet, I’ll probably do a update video but as for the new layout it may be awhile sadly :/
That's sad..
Again!?
Maaqqn you already destroyed a layout, 5tis will be the second one lmao
