00:33...You can always hide your cat under a mountain in the corner. Make sure top is easily removable! 🤣 Walthers has done a good job, eliminating a hinge joint on their switches. MUCH better reliability.
Great start. If i may suggest only solder on the outside of rail as the inside of the rail is used by the flange of the wheel. Love you cat as well. Keep up the good work.
Soldering on the outside of the rail will have solder on the inside because of the fact that the solder will travel but the solder will be at a minimum. If you do it right!!!
I’m glad you’re back to making videos. You’re actually the first channel I started watching and subscribed to last year when I was wanting to get back into the hobby.
Great to have you back, I did wonder what happened... It is such a temptation to throw heaps of money into the hobby and then curse yourself later for not planning. Something you may want to consider. With that 3 bay shed, how about having a disused line coming out of it? You could go to town having a really rusty track, overgrown with weeds.
If I may make one suggestion, make a mobile MOW diorama that you temporarily attach with rail joiners to where ever the track ends. So that it looks like a crew is expanding your layout while you are working on something else!
May I ask you both why you didn’t choose the Walthers flex track to go with the Walthers turnouts? Isn’t the tie spacing different on the Atlas flex track?
@@derekalexander4030 I actually end up getting Walthers flextrack and I’m not sure why I didn’t buy it in the first place. As for the spacing I don’t notice much of a difference after painted
Great video and glad to see you're back! I'm really digging the new layout and that's what I decided on too! The more I thought whether I wanted it narrow or not. After contemplating it over and over I went with it being 2' wide as well. I really wanted a Switching layout even though I've obtained MASSIVE amount of rolling stock and 14 locomotives! I think I became an impulsive buyer. But oh well, I can change these pieces around when I get tired of them! CONGRATULATIONS on over 11k subscribers too! Cheers from Laurel, Delaware USA
Thank you as always Shawn! I think 2’ is a perfect choice that is easy to work with when it comes to reaching things. Sounds like you got a awesome collection, the more the merrier! Thank you again!
So glad to see you're back! I was looking forward to the next layout updates, but seeing mine is still under construction, I'm glad to get a recap of building from this stage again. Thanks!
That’s awesome to see you back! I wondered what happened to you, but good to see you (And the cat) are still around. I like your channel because it’s just nice and chill without all the loudness and fast paced graphics of other channels
Be interesting to see if you actually finish this one. If going off that track plan it will be a solid little switching layout. Though I'd start plannning out the 3rd and 4th sections now on paper. So when time comes you not re-doing section 1 & 2's track.
I get all of my "crap" paint from the "big box" store. They usually have a discount table where paint that was mis-tented and returned are. I have 3 gallons of dark paint at a cost of only about $30 for all of it. They will even re-tint it for me and I usually have them darken it a lot. I've never worried about "DCC friendly" turnouts as I have the "come alive" chip in all of my engines. So there will be no problems using the less expensive switches. I'd love to use the snap switches but I don't want to spend the money on them.I always use acid flux when soldering. The solder will flow better and hold better. After things cool down I wipe the joints with alcohol on an old tooth brush. Gets all of the acid off. The wood dowel is new to me. I like it. I don't like the unpainted look when you tape over the points of the track. Try cans of food to weigh the track down. Place them on their sides and the track will keep them from rolling away. Soup works great. I also have some bricks. just cover them with an old piece of fabric to soften them a bit. They work great for the turnouts. I use a lot of the "T" pins to hold track in place while the glue dries. Looks like a good track plan so far.
Whenever i built large projects i get bored and burnt out after a while so to stay focused i recommend only laying the track then build and fully finish sections so just build a secrion as you go dont plan it because thinking as you build it makes you want to continually build it
Glad to join the fun! Good tip on the wooden dowel cleaning. Be careful with those inside solder joints. HO scale probably will be fine but in N your even tighter! Looks like you are using NCE. You using the S8 for switch control ? It does work with snap switches I think ?! .... Cool Video Thanks!
Looks great mate, I'm planning to expand my layout so I can use code 100 track so I can run both British and american trains with set track express turn outs for my amtrak cars to run nicely.
I am so glad to see you back! I was worried you'd never return. This layout is going to be great! Awesome start, I must say. I'd like to build my own layout in the near future because I finally found a spot to put it! Looking forward to seeing the next episode.

HES POSTED!!!!!! Ideas: you could use cork to raise the track for easier placement of gravel, if you want. #2, use the shed or stall to house trains not running on the layout at the moment, #3 use the vehicles from the lot you bought for a scene near the track where there placing roads or train track
I like those ideas! As for the cork, I’m probably not gonna use it since everything is already wired and glued down at this point 😂 but thank you for the feedback and for watching my video!
@@TopRailroad Any time! Thank You for coming back! We missed You, also nice layout, I just started over too, it's all around my room, maybe I'll start a series, but I've quite started already...but idk...

I’m happy that you found a way to come back to what you love. Have you thought about what made you walk away and how to prevent it in the future? Do you have any suggestions for others on how not to fall into that?
Ok so question to the group, if my track is already laid out in the way I like, is there a way to glue down the track while keeping it in place? Weird question I know but I could use some help here lol
Sadly not really and I totally understand that cause you spend so much time laying it down to to how it looks. The best you can do is lifting it slightly and running a thin line of glue under as far as you can

Putting in a few angled cross members would stabilize your bench work. I noticed that when you were sanding it was moving quite a bit.
