This was the moment Evangelion, a story supposedly fated to repeat for all of eternity, was able to break free and move to the path of a happy ending. The first time the final impact had been conquered. The first time the characters didn’t cower in fear, but faced it head on. It’s a rather obvious metaphor, but it’s still beautiful nonetheless.
I think Thrice Upon a Time is not only a great film, but a show of growth and change for the original people involved in it. Here, Sagisu demonstrates that he hasn’t forgotten the gospel tones his original Eva OST captured, but it swoons with with wide and majestic lyricism that make me think of Shin Godzilla.
Oh wow didn’t even realize he did the Shin godzilla soundtrack too (the songs that were original obviously). When he and Anno make films together he really hits some crazy tones.
This piece along with the scene really transcends the medium and feels divine like we are peering into the sounds/images of god and his celestial host of angels as they create life and reality as we know it, this is what it feels like to gaze upon something ineffable and beautiful.
The moment that mask fell off and I saw the Rei head while this song played, I realized Anno had somehow outdone himself and surpassed the powerful memories EoE evokes in me. Thank you, and goodbye, all of Evangelion!
@@cheplays2482 Pro tip if it's not common knowledge (I just discovered it this morning on Apple Music): There is a What if? Yoko Takashi Ver. out there and it's great. I have absolutely thought about the strange beauty of Additional Impact and have tried to interpret what Anno meant through this scene, as opposed to the original Third Impact. It did strike me that technically, it's the first time we saw Gendo's vision for the last impact come to fruition, as he was foiled before.
The way this sentimental, Disney-ending song plays while an occult ritual to end the world is carried out.. somehow lines up very well with Gendo’s twisted world view and obsession to get back his beloved Yui. It’s almost like this is Gendo’s mental soundtrack, he’s so blind to the destruction and chaos he’s caused to bring her back.
Perfectly put... I also love how in the film it ends with 3:30 before the scene cuts. The way it plays out, holding on Eva Imaginary's twisted smile with those discordant Jaws-esque harps rising, it's really trying to snap you out of Gendo's elating trance and open your eyes to the dire nature of the situation. Cutting from that to the WILLE crew desperately preparing the Wunder for one last ditch effort... mwah.
My theory about the additional impact: An Impact created by the rite of sacrificing all available spears left by the ‘Gods’, the first ancestral race, a compounding of uncountable realities and worlds/timelines to create the ‘Anti-Universe’, essentially a reversal of entropy and complete one eighty degree turn on the laws of thermodynamics, as a result it’s a world where Gendo can potentially influence reality however he sees fit, as a reversal or subjugation of those laws would theoretically allow for time travel into the past demonstrated by his creation of ‘Evangelion Imaginary’, meaning he can finally ‘see’ Yui again, finally ‘kill’ his Gods by willing them into non-existence, this mirrored on the outside world to create the giant ‘Rei’ head, actually for all intents and purposes a ‘Yui’ head, the Failures of Infinity changing Fuyutsuki getting tang’d etc. I really do think Gendo had humanity’s best intentions in mind, but his obsession with the past made him fail to realise that presently the last true vestige of Yui was right there the whole time, Shinji, who in his heart had just as much love for his father as his mother ever did, who uses the Lance of Gaius to essentially pull both himself and Gendo out of the joint tragedy and trauma the loss of Yui bought for both of them, in doing this Gendo finally gets to see Yui again, not by force, but by accepting and reconciling with his pain and loss.
Wow my dude, this sounds just right. To be honest im proud of shinji and in the end proud of gendo cause he apologized and realized his failure as father and in the end. Choose to give the power to shinji and sacrifice himself with yui so shinji could have his happy ending. Marvelous
