What makes a soundtrack iconic? Halo’s theme is iconic, Skyrim’s theme is iconic, and I think whatever it takes to capture that elusive feeling, that emotional sense of grandeur is on full display here in this soundtrack. Great effort from the composer and musicians
This theme I think, perfectly captures the idea of the uncritical jingoism and worship of displays of power in the form of aerial dominance laying waste to the field, that will be what drives Americans today to turn a blind eye to fascism. It will come packaged not as Nazi cosplayers, but as edits of air strikes set to MCU music. This game's satire is so thorough and perfect.
A big part is a strong, easily hummable melody. Halo has one, Skyrim has one,and so does this. Extra credits did a video on game music forever ago that does a deep dive into this topic.
@@GrumpyMcfartExactly this. A lot of movie composers have completely forgotten this and thinks that loud orchestral noise is enough to make something "epic". (Thanks Hans Zimmer)

And it hasn't gotten old, 30+ missions in. It's literally the only way to come into a situation right now. Omg how did I miss that original typo? No my fellow divers, this entire soundtrack is what I've been listening to at work for days now. I cannot get enough of this game.

@@Jumpyfoot A lil bit tipsy from my ArenaNet/343-Microsoft friend's Christmas party right now, but I'll tell you exactly the secret! You have to 1000% believe in it. It's what the world needed right now - you have to believe in being a part of something bigger than yourself. It's I think what we all needed as gamers right now, to be a part of something bigger than ourselves, regardless of where we're from. I know it's just a silly little game, but it was our brief moment where we could all come together no matter where we're from. I'll forever be grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this!
The game is totally absurd. Four guys determine the fate of a planet after being fired down like bullets, ads about your family being eaten by bugs if you don't sign up, and freaking CAPES. But then I hear the drop theme, and I *BELIEVE.*
Four guys? My brother in Liberty, every time a Helldiver gives the ultimate sacrifice for Freedom, it's a new Helldiver that's drop to reinforce. There are no respawns, they all gave their lives for Democracy.
I know most people won’t care about this, but for anyone who’s into music theory: I *believe* this theme is in 5/4 meter, which is a *huge* part of how it feels heart-pumping and unsettling and driving all at once. We don’t get a lot of music in 5/4. Most songs are in 4/4 and 3/4, in no small part because they make it easier to find the downbeat for dancing. But 5/4 is an uncommon rhythm, so it immediately feels unfamiliar in a way that’s both uncomfortable and exciting. 5/4 is harder to move with and dance to because of the way it alternates between the three beats of 1-2-3 and the two beats of 4-5. It’s difficult to settle into the rhythm. It always feels like that sixth beat is coming, but then the floor drops out from under you. You find yourself constantly falling forward, never quite finding your footing, always plunged into the next measure a moment sooner than you expected. (Don’t get me started on how appropriate *that* is for a *literal* Hellpod drop.) That all helps create a sense of restlessness, uncertainty, and tension. The theme from *Mission: Impossible* uses 5/4 meter to great effect in the same way. TL;DR: He didn’t just “understand the assignment.” He crushed it like a Terminid nest, dropped a NUX-223 Hellbomb on it, and then laid waste to the rubble with an Orbital 380mm HE Barrage. It’s just so perfect on so many levels.
It would be an actual crime if this theme doesn't win an award for "Best Theme" or similar. This theme over the drop into a mission reaches John Williams and James Horner levels of Epic.
unfortunately we all know that come award season some playstation horror game or a god of war dlc will win the award cos the composer is friends with an executive who pays for the game awards producers sponsorships
The song that plays when 2 billion bugs are killed in 14 hours, strong arming 1 corporation in 3 days, dedicated and united fanbase in 3 months. Yeah, Helldivers 2 is special
Don't forget the very next month the Helldivers selflessly sacrificed a brand new stratagem to 'save sick children', stuck on some planet. Expect to our knowledge those kids were fake and we did it for no real reward, just because it was the right thing to do. Then Arrowhead donated a ton of money to a sick children's charity when we picked the sick kids over a new strat, revealing the true value of what we can do when we work together. Helldivers forever! We'll allegedly get those antitank mines some day, but damn if we didn't actually raise money for ill children without even being told it would help. We just agreed it was worth it to give a damn and that's what I like about us
All that with 12 million helldivers (12 million copies have been sold, meaning it’s a ratio of only 12 million soldiers against the population of China against superbugs)
This track for sure will be added to the legends such as Tetris, Mario, Halo, Wii menu music, lol. It'll be a song people know of, but may have never played the game.
This game saved me. Let me explain. In the last few years, I've been struggling with depression and anxiety. I even reached the point of being suicidal. Things haven't been going well with my studies and work. Frustrated, I tried to reconnect with my old hobbies, with gaming being one of them. However, for some reason, it wasn't the same; I wasn't feeling entertained at all, and most of the current games seemed dull... or so I thought until I discovered Helldivers 2. I started to feel connected. There's this immense sense of community, and pursuing a common goal makes me feel like I belong. Dealing with friendly fire, being surrounded by enemies, yelling over the mic to coordinate, sacrificing yourself so your team can evacuate, playing with random people, and ACTUALLY HAVING FUN have made my life so much better. I cannot thank the developers and the community enough; you all have brought back the joy I once felt while gaming. To each one of you, thank you for being a Helldiver. You saved me, and I'll do my part on the battlefield.
Thanks for sharing your story, Nash! I'm sorry to hear you'd been going through such difficult times for so long, but it makes me misty-eyed to hear that we could've played even a small part in your recovery. We're proud and grateful to have people like you playing our game!
Democracy saves lives, man. And this song is even more effective than caffeine and Stim itself. I am sorry too for what you're been through, I am sure you're strong than you think. You can do this, because I've been through depression too and I was near to suicide myself too (that was more than 17 years ago, but the most recent one was 5 years ago). I hope I don't say stupid things, but hang it there man. Give a cup of liber-tea to depression and suicidal thoughts and give them some lessons of DEMOCRACY (in short, don't let depression and suicide take over you). Life is tough but you are far more badass than life itself, it's never been easy for everyone but, even if I don't know you, I believe you will make it. Also players in Helldivers 2 are so kind than any games I played (with the most toxic behaviours possible), so I hope that also help you as well.
When I was shopping recently, I was humming the melody and suddenly I heard "For Democracy" to my left. I turned to him, saluted and we hugged. We didn't know each other but somehow we did. No song has ever done that for me. Thanks unknown Helldiver
yeah that definitely happened i should rephrase; i believe everything about this except the hug, that just doesn't seem real. i can believe the salute though, since that's something i'd do
You did it man You've made it into the memory of the gaming community. It could have been another coop shooter, instead we have a Space Vietnam of to tell future generations, and the memories of the most intense moments are ours to keep.
I just thought this was some random dude posting this. Youre the actual composer?!?! Dude youre amazing!! I get chills every single time i drop and extract. Your music flows with the battle from first engagement excitement, to the uncertainty when you run out of reinforcement calls, to the triumph over the enemy by the skin of your teeth, then being brought back to the ship to do it all over again. It never gets old, it puncuates the action, and it kicks so much ass. Amazing work dude.
I like how you run around being completely expendable, but everything in the game is designed to make you feel like the hero of the universe. From the music, to the dialogue and its all designed to pump you up. It makes me actually want to roleplay during a mission.
I don't care about GOTY honestly, the games I enjoy a lot are not seen by GOTY at all. And a game's recognition will not change if it wins the award. it just means its "Complete Edition" or "Ultimate Edition" will change to "GOTY Edition" instead.
@benjaminmendy-cadol2706 Even if it doesn't win GOTY, it should definitely be nominated and hopefully win best soundtrack. One award I'm sure it may win is Players Choice Award.
I have never played a game that simultaneously made me feel like an invincible elite, while also making me feel like expendable cannon fodder. This song, THIS SONG, sold me the propaganda that keeps me going back, feeling like a boss, no matter how many Helldivers die under my control.
I've heard this song at least a hundred times already, but only now noticed this is in 5/4 signature. I think this adds a tremendous amount of energy to it.
Honestly this music elevate what would be campy b-movie plot parody into super high quality satire. Extremely motivational on its own but hilarious with accompanying footage of chaos. really fine line to stride.
It reminds me of Conan The Barbarian in a way, which had an amazing epic orchestral soundtrack - where it otherwise may have been ignored as a goofy 80s fantasy film.

I was waiting for helldivers to go on sale… but after seeing every single helldiver rain down their righteous fury upon Sony, I was awe struck and inspired. So I picked up the game today and put in over 7 hours already since im recovering from a cold and had the day off. FOR LIBERTY!!!
Probably the most amazing, accidental improv RP moment I had was extracting on Meridia (before the Major Order to destroy it). One guy on our team was new to the game and the hordes of Terminids separated him from the rest of us as we made it to the extraction point. There was no more time left on the clock so once the ship arrived it wouldn't stick around for long. Trying to get to us, with 30 seconds left on the timer for the ship to arrive, he ran out of ammo and said "Just go without me." Screw that. I wasn't about to let my comrade just be another statistic. I ran out from the landing zone, literally pushing my way through the bugs and sidestepping the bigger ones as I started clearing a path to reach my stranded team mate as the others stayed and gave me covering fire. 10 seconds left on Pelican-1's ETA, and I managed to reach him, gave him some ammo from my supply pack and said, "Do you wanna lay down here and die like a dog, or do you wanna LIVE!? Let's go, come on!" With the rookie in tow and stocked back up on ammo the two of us made a break for it back to the others at the extraction point. The ship was landing while we were trying to carve our way through the Terminids that had surrounded the others whom were just barely holding them back as a Bile Titan was now approaching. Pelican-1 would wait a little while longer before taking off without us and I practically pushed the rookie into the ship as it was like 5 seconds before take off. We had made it. Nobody gets left behind.
Mr Roget, I always marvel at composers and their ability to hear the music in their minds. This is INCREDIBLE. The initial drop into the brass is so powerful that is has become iconic. I will forever recognise Helldivers 2 because of this. Thank you for your art!

(Don’t get me started on how appropriate *that* is for a *literal* Hellpod drop.)
That all helps create a sense of restlessness, uncertainty, and tension.
Holy shit, you really know your stuff, this was an awesome read
I agree he definitely crushed this song.
Well ... at least it is not the theme from The Terminator!
Thank you for your input! It honestly gives greater insight on why this soundtrack is fantastic. I enjoyed the read.

Nothing better than democracy to beat depression 🗿
Hell yeah
Spill oil Helldiver! Together we will end the Automoton reign of terror!

“We’re not a Triple A game, but damn it I’m gonna make a sweeping patriotic orchestra theme song… and the gamers are gonna be so hyped”
Honestly, with DarkTide, Dave the Diver, and this, we’ve been pleasantly surprised with banger game tracks
Yeah, ur gonna need to report to ur nearest democracy officer my guy. It has the ONLY right.
Sounds like something a traitor would say.
I was waiting for helldivers to go on sale… but after seeing every single helldiver rain down their righteous fury upon Sony, I was awe struck and inspired. So I picked up the game today and put in over 7 hours already since im recovering from a cold and had the day off.
FOR LIBERTY!!!
I SALUTE YOU HELLDIVER!
This song is already on repeat status.
For SUPER-EARTH!
I love how in 0:10 you can see him standing victorious on the bug, but if you look lower there is a human impaled by the bug twitching in agony xD
That’s impossible, managed democracy never loses soldiers to the bugs, report yourself for reeducation
There is no time for mourning
When the title card appears and the music swells, that's when i knew i was going to love the game.
Trying to get to us, with 30 seconds left on the timer for the ship to arrive, he ran out of ammo and said "Just go without me."
Screw that.
0:20 Helldiver just casually asserting his dominance with a T-pose
It's the "Hug" emote I believe
For your consideration, the Jericho.
