Heavy metal is an extreme art form and with extreme art comes extreme ideas if you can't handle it don't consume it. Also it is entirely possible to enjoy someone's art and disagree with their opinions at the same time.

As an LGBT metalhead, I feel sort of caught between two communities. On one hand, I feel I'll try to be PC just because I think of myself as a polite person and don't want to offend anyone. At least not intentionally. I won't use slurs or genuinely offensive words when talking with people, but I won't take it to the extreme far-left description of being PC. On the other hand, I could care less if other people weren't PC. It takes a lot to offend me and I won't bitch at people for not being PC. In terms of the metal community, I could care less if they were PC. I don't always feel accepted in the metal community, being gay, but so long as I am not being personally attacked, I could care less for how a band decides to present itself, PC or not.

I'm a very tolerant man, I could care less about political correctness whenever I think it's needed or if it's completely redundant, in other words I think racism, sexism, or homophobia is a way to look for trouble in society today but I do think that censorship is wrong and disrespectful.

I read an article not too long ago about these same groups trying to get rid of mosh pits. Claiming pits are alienating women and they demonstrate too much aggression and toxic masculinity. But they soon realized they werent making much headway so they've created their own safe spaces without mosh pits. And that's what will have to happen for those groups. If you want a change, create it yourself. But don't come into my space telling me what to do.
And holy shit that pissed me off so much. I'm a woman who's loved metal and gone to shows for as long as I can remember and never have I ever felt alienated from or by a mosh pit. It was offensive to me to even hear that shit but... whatevs

It's not just metal music that political correctness needs to stay out of. It's all kinds of art forms. Political correctness has been steadily ruining things like comic books (a prime example being Marvel), video games, and even cartoons. Thankfully anime and metal have remained pretty much untouched. Sure, these instances crop up from time to time, but, until we see a big band like Maiden being forced to add people of different racial or cultural backgrounds for the sake of so-called 'diversity' or an anime about gender studies, I'd say we're doing pretty okay for now.

Cannibal Corpse is a funny example as it was actually heavily censored for several years in germany. First covers got outlawed so wet get our special watered down ones. Then the records went onto the index (no ads, only sold to adults). Even live they were not allowed to play certain songs. Funny times as it was a really ad campaign for CC :-)

This political correctness happened to me once with a girl she said metal was sexist and then she was defending pop music and twerking saying that it was talent.
And some guy saying that the women in metal are just there so the companies can sell more, because the guys just go see those bands for the attractive woman in the band. Last time I checked metal fans cared more about the talent of the band the talent of the musicians never have they cared for their looks, last time a guy at a show was talking to me about Nervosa and not once did he mention how hot the vocalist was me and him were just talking about her vocal talents

Metal has always been a very broad and diverse genre of music, not just in terms of global backgrounds, but musically and lyrically. To me, that's the biggest reason metal is widely loved. And that's why bands should be able to write about whatever they please and not be told they can't. If you don't like it, you don't have to listen to it, but when activist groups try to ruin the fun for everyone else, that's when shit needs to stop.

I agree with this more or less to the full. I'm quite left leaning politically but I don't have a problem with metal being extreme, cause it's art, and art is self expression. I don't believe in a "PC Culture" that's ruining our society, I think it's just some people struggle to find a balance between being too PC or too insensitive/unkind. I think that representation of minorities is important to help society become more inclusive but this should begin by encouraging people who haven't been exposed to metal to give it a go to see if they enjoy it and want to pursue creating and/or playing it, not just by shoving some non-typical people on stage to perform metal.
But yeah, like James Hetfield says live "we don't give a shit where you're from, or who you are, or who you voted for, etc..." metal is an inclusive community for people with a common love for extreme art, and it isn't divided by skin colour or religion or gender. There's more white people in metal just like there's more black people in Hip-hop; that doesn't mean for one second that black people can't enjoy metal or white people can't enjoy hip-hop.

honestly, my problem with this is that the whole "free speech" thing is one sided.if some black metal band decides to use nazu insignia or whatever that's their right but so is it the right of protesters to be against that or a venue to deny them to play. you can't say freedom and then only grant it to those who agree with you anyway.

I completely agree with this video. I frequently have this conversation with my metalhead friends. Metal isn’t supposed to be safe. It’s something that allows us to confront real or imaginary evils from Nazis to Satan. Just because the songs or the bands contain evil themes does not mean we are supporting nazis or satanism. It’s like saying that teaching world war 2 in schools is educating kids to become nazis.

It is possible for there to be good music that is PC, but I don't think any band should be forced to be that way. I especially don't think any music festival should be forced to play certain bands just because of PCness, like if I was the lead of a band I wouldn't want to be added to a festival's lineup just because it's a female led band, I want to be added because we're good, and being added just because I'm a chick is just as bad as sexual discrimination.

I think PC culture is really annoying, but I don't see it going anywhere. It's almost like calling people Nazis or saying something is racist is fashionable now. A lot of these terms are being tossed around far too easily. I 'm not too worried about PC culture working its way into metal. First, I don't think that people who listen to metal will allow it to happen; and secondly it doesn't seem like the best music choice to push an agenda onto a wide audience. They should stick to mainstream pop whatever.

I get what you say, but i don't think it's fair to say leftists are against metal or dark music. The goth subculture is very rooted in left wing politics and they talk about some really dark shit. Same with punk, because they make a distinction between art and reality. They realise that when cannibal corpse talks about death, that is art and people like it, but when someone actually dies that is bad and people know that. When metal first came around, the backlash it faced came mostly from religious conservatives, who screamed about satanism, and all that shit, while leftists were more open minded to change and new stuff in general.

    • @tierefuerimmer9635
      @tierefuerimmer9635 2 роки тому

I don't think he meant all leftists or liberals . I think he just meant people in general getting triggered and trying to ruin things for other people because they may have misconstrued something or happened to be offended by something . Btw you're absolutely right about alternative subcultures leaning more towards the left and being more open minded than conservatives who try to portray rock and metal as evil.

Please comment on Conner Betts doing the vocals of Menstrual Munchies a Black metal band that participated in Black Flags Over Brooklyn. Can you, can anybody sing, taunt, excite themselves into doing something horrible like that through music?

From all I could find he sounded like he was a psycho anyway. There's so many people listening to extreme music and all that who never commit a crime in their lives, it's pretty unfair to blame it for the bad deeds some people commit. It's kind of the same shit with violent video games, rap music, etc ,etc

Nobody is taking away the darkness in metal. They tried more in the 80s to censor metal. way harder. THE PMRC. Metal is not the rebellious music it once was. Yeah, you'll always have people out there trying to control others. The anti pc crowd tends to be drama queens much of the time. Nobody is stopping anything. And if you can't handle a little resistance along the way, make gospel music.

I'm politically correct to a degree. I don't like to use the words "Fag" or "Faggot", I never use the "N Word" towards Black people (or otherwise), and I'm making an effort not to call things "Retarded" anymore. But as for Metal, I feel it needs to stay extreme and not get watered down by the PC culture.
People need to remember that Extreme Music is going to have Extreme subject matter. Art doesn't always represent the Artist. Ie; just because an artist writes about Rape/Murder/Incest etc doesn't mean they're gonna be personally involved in such acts.
As a close, I feel we can better ourselves as a personable species, but Art is just Art. Extreme or subtle, Harsh or pleasant etc.

When I think about being "political correct" I think about not being a fucking bigot. I would have never even _considered_ putting topics like murder, suicide, death, etc. into the same equasion.
But yeah, generally speaking, tolerance ends where intolerance starts, and as history has shown, people are often too fucking stupid to think for themselves. I believe that _certain_ topics should come with regulations, mainly hatespeech. No person should be allowed to openly, on a stage, spread hate for people solely based on their ehtnicity, skin colour, sexuality, gender or the likes, without also being . The Nazis already did that over here in Germany and we all remember where that got us. Don't need that again.
_But_ I also realise that properly regulating such things is very very difficult. Where are the limits? What contexts are okay? Who is gonna keep track of everything? Who can guarantee that this form of censorship wouldn't be getting abused to censor things that shouldn't be censored?
For the most part I just wish that consumers would show more intelligence and agency when it comes to the media they consume and support.
But that is clearly too much to ask for.
As things currently are, there is no "correct" way to handle this stuff. And that's why that issue will probably never go away.

This kinda reminds me what happened to Disma. They were kicked off the Netherlands Death Fest I think. It was all because Craig was in a hate band on the side. They were banned from the festival. I mean that is so lame to kick a band as there are people out there who like the band for their death metal lyrics not what they believe or do in their free time. I think it is so lame we can't all stay in our corners.

  • @budgetgitarr5351

What you are talking about is the “bad” PC. The good one is more of a common sense one, like “oh sorry for for insulting you, I’ll try to learn from it and be a less of an arse (as we all are sometimes)”.
BUT metal (and sometimes comedy) is the place where social tabus are joked/dealed with. Like, think of a joke by a professional comedian that cannot be insulting to anyone. Most jokes are funny because there is a cultural conflict with the subject. The same goes with metal (most of the time not funny but still). Also, if tough subjects/ideas aren’t dealed with those things will dwell and grow into something that isn’t good for society/metal/music/comedy/whatever. There needs to be a outlet for every ideology/idea/topic. It is up to society/each individual to value those ideologies/ideas/topics as good or not.

I'm with you dude. There's a huge difference between being polite in everyday life and artistic expression.
We don't talk about digging up corpses, opening their bellies and fucking them in everyday life (at least I hope so) yet that stuff is normal in metal music. It's an important difference

I don't know if actual political correctness would work with the aggressive style of metal. One of the most important things, if not *the* most important thing, is that metal bands don't tell you how great it is that we have peace and love and freedom and all that bullshit, they express how horrible it is that we actually don't.

I fully support Progressiveness and diversity in media, but no one should ever be "forced" to do so. If they don't want to include, for example, a black character or a disable character or whatever then they should be allowed not to. It doesn't necessarily mean they're racist, maybe the character would be out of place in the scenario of the story.
We shouldn't rush things, just give them time to fully integrate

I'm mostly PC because there are consequences of not being PC in today's world, as society tends to change over time. And it's not because I'm being forced to be PC, but it really is in my heart to respect other people's sensitivities. I just never apply my politics to heavy metal… I never really thought it'd be an issue. I honestly don't care what other bands do, because if I don't agree with them, I stay away from it.
