Fun fact: That Creeping Death "Die!" riff was written by Kirk when he was 16, so even before he met Hetfield
Aiden Macleod Yes just look "Kirk hammet guitar center" on youtube. He says it himself in the interview
Look up "Die by His Hand." It's an old Exodus demo from when Kirk was with them. The chorus uses the same riff.
Also "Impaler" which uses the same riff as "Trapped under Ice."
Fun fact-dave mustaine wrote jump in the fire when he was 15. The whole song.
@@marquesbrownlee6293 Dave Mustaine wrote all of the Metallica songs when he was 1
15
A lot of people say Kirk is a cry baby, but I think they don't know wah-t they are talking about
I would say I'm actually very stWAHng.
WAHt the heck is it really Kirk WAHmet? Lmao (By the way I am not hating)
That's really funny man😆😆😆😆🤘
best comment god
I see waht you did there
Not to mention Kirk wrote one of the most recognizable metal riffs of all time, Enter Sandman.
Emmy Rota and the creeping death break down riff! Let's not forget that gem!
Big Larry 8802 he wrote the creeping death breakdown at 16
Aiden Macleod yea, I kind of agree with you on that
I agree when looking back but given 1990 it was the best metal out at the time
Jack Rota Didn't they steal that from Excel?
Kirk hammet did have an impact on me when I was starting aswell. No matter what anyone says, he does have a place in a generation of guitar players.
Greig Williamson He used to be a beast. The shit he gets is due to Metallica's post black album stuff and the fact that he has given up practicing.
Kirk is still a beast. He just is burned out. Last good album was. And justice for all.
He has arthritis in his left hand, im not surprised that he isnt as good as he was 30 years ago. Mustaine isnt as good as he was either.
LedSabbathQueenie Dave literally had to relearn the guitar all over again after nerve damage in his left arm/hand back in the early 00's, so he should get a bit of slack too. He's still playing crazy complex rhythm parts perfectly, and I thought his solos on Dystopia were pretty great: the one that starts around 3:10 of the title track is him, not Kiko, for instance.
OfficialGoodGuyJack Same for me when I first started, along with David Gilmour, Steve Vai and Eric Johnson.
One thing I will say though: the more you play guitar, the more that Kirk is likely to fall to the wayside in terms of your influences. His melody in his early solos was impeccable, but they do become a bit samey, especially when you start looking into playing them for yourself. There's obviously nothing wrong with that, and the dude's sold 150 million albums or something so he's doing something right, but it's just an observation I've made in my learning journey. Someone like Randy Rhoads sticks around as someone I'd love to play like, since the very beginning, but my obsession with Kirk's playing fell off pretty quickly. I actually think more highly of James' playing and riffs than I do Kirk these days. I've come to appreciate someone like Marty Friedman a hell of a lot more, whereas he wasn't even on my radar when I first started.
This was very educational to WAHtch.
nice
Son of a butch
WAHt did you say?
Why
StarzGD *WAHy
Fun fact: Kirk actually started digging deep into theory after Cliff died. Before the accident, Cliff was the musical genius, and Kirk leaned on his knowledge of music theory.
rip cliff
So you’re saying when Kirk was taking lessons from Joe Satriani while Kirk was still in Exodus all the way through till Metallica Justice era, he never learnt musical theory from Satriani? I find that very hard to believe indeed. Fun Fact: Kirk Hammett was Joe Satriani’s very last student, the day after their last lesson Joe stopped teaching guitar and became a solo artist, the rest is history.
Ehv > Kirk
@BionicBrady two completely different genres and play styles. You cannot compare the two
@@popeleox1202so ajfa solos were all kirk ? Damn kirk is insane
Habits of Hetfield? Rhythm players don't get enough love.
Downstrokes lol
Habits of hetfield:
Habit 1: 00000000000000
Habit 2: power chords
Habit 3: The Em chord
@@jami1654 Habit 4: creating a mind-blowing riff in 5 seconds for a joke
That wouldn't be a bad "habits of" video. It's by no means easy to do everything James is capable of.
why would you complain about james not being in a video that is about kirk?
Just came here to read the wah jokes
Abhushan Rajbhandari same
Abhushan Rajbhandari So did I, it's funny.
Me to
Metal Morphine Wah the fuck are you talking about?
Waaah?
Dude, thank you for this. Kirk is the reason I started playing guitar. All I learned was Metallica when I started and I still love them to this day. Hammett is one of the greatest of all time. You are absolutely right about his bluesy sort of playing. I love his solos because they are melodic and they tell a story, they're not just mindless wank. He writes catchy melodies and really puts feeling into his playing.
Talking about master of puppets main solo...
@@noopez_ written by Hetfield.
@@mihailostojanovic3201 the sweep picking?
Eh...
@@monicagaba2682 what sweep picking?
Metallica and Kirks solos are what made me go and and buy a guitar years ago if it wasnt for them i might never of found my favourite past time
Aiden Macleod Of course someone mentions megadeth when someone says something about metallica
Aiden Macleod He's given credit. He wrote two songs on kill em all and co wrote the rest along with like 2 riffs on ride the lightning. And guess what? Metallica wrote master of puppets and and justice for all without Mustaine. Two of the greatest thrash albums of all time.
Cheeki Breeki megadeth and Metallica made me pick up the guitar
Wah, pentatonic- there you go
Chris Arias 😂😂😂😂
Leo B I don't think you got the joke
Chris Arias nah, i think you mean Zakk Wylde😂😂😂
Dimebag Darrell haha no, I would have made sure to add pinch harmonics first ha 😂
He uses phrygian and harmonic minors as well as natural minor, the pentatonic scale is what he first used in albums like kill em all, thats the typical stereotype and yes sadly he overuses blues licks but from time to time he does play other scale with other fancy licks, listen to AJFA and MOP solos, you'll see what Im talking about
Say Kirk Hammett.... watch all the trolls come out of their mom's basement to mock him. Laugh as Kirk heads to the bank in between world tours..... while the trolls go back to mom's basement.
Habits of Dimebag Darrell!!
WE NEED THIS NOW
Whammy
#1 getting shot
Bit by Bit gaming - Minecraft and more! That didn't even have any real edge.
Charles Grey your wish has been granted
This entire video you say stuff like "He was..." "He played..." "He would do this..." as if he's dead or something. Just found that odd.
Evelina999 He doesn't compose solos any more, so for this lesson's intents and purposes he is.
Elvina999 Yeah totally agree with you. Using the past tense was a bit off.
He's dead to me.
Evelina999 the real Kirk died in a car accident in the 90's, while he was on drugs, the actual Kirk is a bot addicted to wah.
Glad someone else noticed
More like Wahbits of Kirk Hammet amirite guys haha im funny i swear idk y i dont have any friends
Grip *Kirk Whammet
Lol
He is the one who got me wanting to play guitar. After hearing the Ride The Lightning, I was there. Kirk has a special place in my life, as do all Metallica.

completely 😆😆 wrong chord too
tvd_211 idk maybe its so he couldnt get copyrighted? Just a thought bc i really hope thats not what he thinks the riff is😂
if he didn't want to get copyrighted he could of just sped it up or slowed it down
@@RichieHelf
either way I cringed at that
Well at first he was just playing it an octave down, afterwards tho yes it kind of declined lol
His solo on the Shortest Straw blew my mind when I first heard it
Kirk is my favorite guitar player! Been waiting for this vid for a long time! Keep it up bud👍
Kirk was one of the reasons I started playing guitar! Thanks for this lesson Tyler!
Habits of Marty friedman
This was awesome, dude, I'm a huge Metallica fan and Kirk and James (As well as Cliff) are huge influences on me. So in line with this, how about a Habits of James Hetfield?
I've been waiting for this video forever! Thanks Tyler
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO FOR SOOO LONG... THANKS TYLER!!

Habits Of Kirk Hammett haters: talk shit on the youtube comments section because you'll NEVER be half as good as he is
kirk is honestly such a great guitarist and really inspired me to keep going with playing guitar.
Like many others, been idolizing KH and ‘and justice for all....’ since the eighties and was always very inspired by his playing style and stage presence.
Thank you for breaking it down so clearly!
As soon as you played that harmonic minor scale I was like, yep, that's Hammett.
Habits of Brian May
Noah Beutler yes I think Brian may is very underrated.
It's just a pleasure to listen your playing.
Kirk is definitely my inspiration and favorite guitar player 🤘🤘
Habits of Eric Johnson?
Kantotero changing batteries because when they’re wrong the tone doesn’t bring you to the holy land
You said it right bro. Alot of folks thinks he's just a straight up wah abuser, but I beg to differ. Like you said, he uses it to an awesome potential, the accentuations of his wah style, are very unique and identifiable to him. Anyone questioning me, listen to "The House Jack Built" for a great example of what I'm referring to. He didn't use it in the generic sense; he used it truly in his own style to great effect, in the context of the songs he featured it in.
I'm getting the Kirk Hammett wah for Christmas I'm really excited
This is a really cool analysis of one of my favorite guitarists, and one of the idols of my youth as a guitar player.
Am I the only one who is going to recognize Tyler absolutely nailing the Leper Messiah solo in the outro of this video? 🤘
Habits of Buckethead please!
The man is too much of a genius, he has few habits, always surprises and experiments
@Jonathan Nielsen you forgot "is leagues ahead of everyone else"
I love this "habits of" series. Metallica is one of my all time favourites.
Thx for this, I've been wanting this for a while!!! I enjoyed and I'll keep shredding!! \m/
great lessons, much thanks

Felipe Bautista Gorjón ive tried to get his tone whammy pedal his signature wah a randal amp depends what album his pickup literally nails his tone and alot of flicking strings hammer ons and on finger slides
Felipe Bautista Gorjón OMG YES!

Do one on Jerry Cantrell
This video is most important video for a guitarist who wanna create his own style or voice on guitar.....It helps me lot...
I'm from the great Pacific Northwest, so I was extremely happy to get Jerry Cantrell's crybaby wah wah peddle!! Right on, Sweetness, love watching your videos!!
Great video man! But you forgot his most common habit: Being hated on by struggling, insecure wanna-be guitarists online! Keep practicing those power chords boys ;)
Habits of Randy Rhoads please
Yess! I've been waiting for this for a long time......
Hey man found your videos a few months ago. . .subscribed . . Awesome job!!!
Habits Kiko Loureiro (Megadeth)
Habits of Jimmy Fucking Page!!!
Leo B Not really, he did a video about his tone, not his playing
That's right! He should make one
kirk hammett is my favorite guitarist! he is the reason I picked up the guitar a few weeks ago
I freaking love this video... Wish you can teach me how to play the guitar and rock. Love Kirk and you bro
now do megadeth's best lead guitarist of all time, MARTY FRIEDMAN! like if you agree!
I prefer Chris Poland.
Yes, Marty is a God.
Jean Borges brah
HaoHaoDeCarabao :D eh, its subjective
Dave! Dave! Dave! Dave! Dave!
If Metallica quit prior to Load he would have been remembered as a beast.
Fact.
Stefan Jankovic Bleeding Me's solo and the outlaw torn's solo are among his best. Load Is underrated. Reload Is not as consistent although It has some jems, but load went totally over people's heads
The Batman Tbh Unforgiven 3 solo is also powerful.
Stefan Jankovic I really love spit out the bone and dream no more on the last record, although some of his solos there are not as memorable since he improvised a lot
I've been a diehard fan of Metallica since 1986-1987 so when the black album and of course the load albums came out I was one of the ones saying they sold out..but as I got older I respect them for branching out and experimenting and disregarding the critics..and if you go back and re-listen to it all they're great songs just not "thrash" and it kept them relevant..even St.Anger has some really great songs if you can get past the horrible production..if you're going to grow as a musician it helps to have an open mind
There newest album kick serious ass!! So Kirk still killing it!!
I really loved WAHtching this
Dude, Kirk uses the E natural minor (Aeolian mode), Phrygian and harmonic minor scales quite often as well, especially on the RTL, MOP and AJFA albums. He's also used various arpeggio shapes, symmetrical patterns, diminished scales and other licks quite a bit throughout his career.
Can you try maybe doing Alexi Laiho from the band Children of Bodom next, for your habits series?
harvestingsorrow Alexi is amazing but I doubt very many people here listen to COB so I wouldn't count on it
Yes!!
Sweeping like a monster, alternate picking like a beast, drinking too much before live sessions... X)
Would be cool if you did a video like this on Mustaine!
All jokes aside he is my mentor I love him everything about his style from when he was a kid until now
Kirk Hammett is definitely one of my two favorite guitar players!!
3. tremolo picking
2. E aeolian and/or E harmonic minor
1. I forgot WAHt this one was....
Honestly, I'm dying for a Habits of Marty Friedman episode. I can't figure out his bends + pre-bends, I know that they're essential to his sound but I just can't figure them out!
Aiden Macleod I probably wouldn't have commented if I didn't know what a pre-bend is... I mean more about how and when he uses them. Often he'll do a pre-bend-release-full bend where it's difficult to get the right tone or attack on the string (his picking style doesn't help, at all), or he'll throw a pre-bend into the middle of a lightning fast run without losing speed. I want to know why I can tell when it's Marty doing a bend/pre-bend, and why he sounds different from guys like Vai, for instance: whether it's his choice of notes that he chooses to bend on, or his technique.
Great video!, its nice to see Kirk etting some respect for a change man🤘
I hope to be like you one day, shredding along with the all time greats :)
BB King and Clapton please!
Kirk Hammet Rules:
1. USE WAH
2. Don't forget Rule 1
3. Don't break Rule 2

He actually wrote the creeping death riff when he was 16
This was really really good! I thought Kirk was just flipping us off, but that makes sense. Great video!

Eat alot and become obese.
according to an interview i saw of Kirk Hammett, the Creeping Death riff was just something that he came out with while still learning how to play the guitar at 16 years old
The bridge riff that he wrote in Creeping Death was written when he was 16 and it's played at the E power chord on the 7th fret on the A string
HABITS OF TONY IOMMI!!!!
Guitar habits of synyster gates next please
shadow islas i don't know why your thinking that
I haven't met him yet but after watching some live songs and interviews he seems to be a very nice person
shadow islas he's not
spiralout72 Nah mate, your on about pre-stage them 😂
That was really enjoyable.
My favorite lead player! Btw I recently saw in a Guitar Center vid that Kirk said he wrote that Creeping Death riff when he was 16!
Habits of Alex Lifeson from Rush?
Love videos like these. As a huge fan of Kirk Hammett, started learning guitar and bass guitar recently ( edit: couple months back is when i started. Around April May ish of this year) mainly cause of Metallica, been playing drums for a couple years now, Metallica was also one of the reasons for that too lol, they just have so many influential musicians in Metallica. But man , been trying to save up for a Kirk Hammett wah pedal recently, love the tone of his stuff solos wise, and yes i fucking love that riff in creeping death, one of my favourite riffs period. This was a fun vid
I love kirk
Habits of Yngwie Malmsteen pls :)

M. T. Asteriti 1. Be a dick
2. Be a bigger dick
3. But make up for it in awesome guitar playing
M. T. Asteriti Play the harmonic minor in every way both imaginable and non-imaginable.
