How I Passed the CPA While Working Full-Time (FIRST TRY)

- Disclaimer: I filmed this video when I passed, before I started this channel, so apologies for the audio in advance.
My goal was to do the least possible and get the goal result of passing. We're all busy with school or work while trying to pass for the CPA so these are my tips that worked. I refined my study plan after each section I took and passed. In this video, I'll be sharing my tips and strategies for passing the CPA exam on the first try, in the most efficient way. I know firsthand how stressful and overwhelming the CPA exam can be, but with the right approach, it's definitely doable.
Some extra reminders:
- It's important to set aside dedicated study time and stick to a schedule.
- Consistency is key when it comes to preparing for the CPA exam.
- Active recall. When you're supposed to memorize, MEMORIZE.
- Take care of yourself. Make sure to get enough sleep, eat well, and take breaks to de-stress. It's important to have a healthy balance between studying and self care.

Thanks for your study plan breakdown!
Congrats!!! I’m felt so reassured watching your video and your study breakdown. I currently doing it that way too. The sims do get discouraging and it takes awhile to feel comfortable doing them. But yeah I’ve def left the sims for last and it’s been helping me for sure. Helping me keep going and not get stuck cause it’s a lot of material. Congrats again!🎉
I’m so glad that this helped you in some way! You got this~ and thank u :))
I love how you said you were just trying to pass. That was my motto too 😂 I passed FAR and AUD with 75. A pass is a pass! I’m so glad I’m finally done. Congratulations!
CONGRATS to u too!! HAHAHA we’re just playing by the rules. Work smarter, not harder 😂
Congratulations on Passing your exam!!!
Thank you!!
Thx so much for sharing ! Im shooting for the BEC in August !
Ofc! GOODLUCK!! You’re gonna kill it!
here i am giving a suggestion about continuing education for your cpe requirement after becoming a CPA. Finding my-cpe was like hitting the jackpot for my professional development. The courses are so well-priced and filled with the latest content. It's reassuring to know I'm learning from the best without overspending.
Thank you so much for explaining your experience with feeling defeated by the first few modules and how comprehensive they are (in Becker). I just started on M1, first set and was so disheartened because it made me feel like I needed to go back and retake ALL of financial accounting. This give me hope that if I just continue on, it'll start to come together. I really appreciate this!!
Happy to help! It was soooo defeating to start off. Power through the lectures and MCs then come back to the modules later! YOU GOT THIS!!
Congrats on passing the CPA exam. I’m in my 40s and thinking about taking the exam. Your video was motivation…😊🙌🏾
Thank you so much!! And I’m so glad to hear that!! Goodluck on the journey~~
Passing the CPA exams is when you study hard, if you can't study or you don't have time for your studies I'd advise you get yourself a help like Mr Willard.
People keep talking about Willard all over
UA-cam, he must be a very awesome help.
Yes you're correct but remember heaven helps those who help themselves, try studying if you can't study then get yourself a good help
I studied for months and couldn't pass, I guess passing is a blessing
CPA exam might seem so tough to pass but studying very hard is a very vital skill to win trust me.
Everyone has their own way, Willard worked for me and studying didn't .
Currently studying for Reg and about to test soon. Glad I found this video!
Goodluck!! You’re gonna kill it
@@statuskuo thank you! I’m so nervous…. I’m finishing chp 8 today. And then review time!! So anxious
Thank you!
thank you for this. Currently studying for FAR as my first exam, and the contents really make me want to cry almost everyday...
I cried plenty too that my Becker book has tear stains 😂 YOU GOT THIS!! Find what works for you and stick with it. And don’t be too hard on yourself when you have bad days and less progress than the others. It happens, we’re human. And remember, it’s a marathon.
5:30. I realized this as well. When I studied for BEC I was doing the simulations after every module and was frustrated because I felt some of the material wasn't even in the module. I started just skipping to the next module and then doing the simulation of the previous module. It helped me get more efficient. I also started just focusing more on the book. Managed to pass with an 85 on the first try.
Ayeeee congrats!!!

Hi teacher I have doubt (joint venture) topic related how can I solve my queries with you?...
Hey I just took a bec exam, how did you feel after taking yours at the moment? like did you think you were going to pass for sure or did you think you failed? Really curious since a lot of videos have been telling me that their actual score was better than they expected it to be and heard that bec exam is getting tougher right now since it's going to be different starting 2024, also congrats!!!!
I felt like I was gonna fail coming out of the BEC exam ngl 😂 like any other section but because it was my last one, I was like fk it. I’m not gonna think about it till the scores come out
How long did the cost accounting and variance analysis sections take you? I was a finance major so far isn’t as bad for me as cost accounting has been. Took me a while so I’m dreading variance analysis which I hear is harder. I am running out of time because I set an aggressive timeline trying to pass before the new format rolls out
I don’t remember exactly, but with variance analysis, really understand the logic of how it works. Once you understand the logic, it shouldn’t be too hard. I wouldn’t rush doing many different questions. I’d pick one question that has many subquestions (e.g. price variance, efficiency variance, budgeted cost, actual cost, favorable/unfavourable…etc). Or even just think through it yourself with each question. Run through all these to make sure you understand the logic. Then you can apply it to everything.
Masters in accounting or certificate in accounting? I have econ degree and financial and managerial accounting. I'm older mid-career and I don't see myself going into a big-4 (maybe smaller regional firm). I could see if a younger person wants a masters to get into big-4. From your perspective would certificate be the smarter way or is there more to learn from a masters? You have lot's of practical pieces in your videos. Thank you.
Sorry for the delayed response. Comment fell through the cracks. For career building, I think getting a certificate like a CPA has more value than a masters in accounting. It is a publicly recognized professional cert after all. But it really depends on what you want to do. If you want to climb up the accounting world’s corporate ladder, a CPA license will eventually be needed. Ultimately, knowledge and experience matters the most. If you can do the work, I doubt people will care whether you have a masters degree or not.
And thank you! I appreciate your kind words
@@statuskuo Thank you so much!
@@statuskuo Thanks for responding. This helps.
What were the requirements in your state? I know GA states 150 hours + 1 year Accounting Work experience. How were you able to start as a student? I'm assuming Masters or Double Major? Really informative Video. ThankYou!
WA state had 225 quarter hours (150 semester hours) of college edu + 1 year of work experience (also a minimum of like 2000 client work hours or something). So if you’ve worked a year but didn’t meet the 2000 hours, you still won’t qualify in WA state. You can start 6 months prior to your anticipated date or reaching the education hours requirements! In your case, if you’re 6 months away from reaching 150 hours, you can go to the Dean/head of accounting at your school to get a proof of sign off that you submit to the Board. I double majored and just maxed out each quarter to get 225 credits in 4 years. Hope this helps!
Thankyou! Really informative - You've helped a hugely.@@statuskuo
Hello im completed my graduation now , i want to take cpa but i have only 90 credit points i need 30 more 🥺 what to do now please tel me
Which course do you pick for backer? I read through it, but I dont know which one should I pick. Thank you
I’m not sure I’m following ur question. Do you mean if it’s the premium one…? I got the one with textbooks, unlimited practice questions, flashcards, mock exams.
Yes that's my question.
HI, I am wondering how did u able to take the first two section while u are in college, I know in order to seat for CPA u need certain credits and qualify accounting credits.
Hey! U are actually able to take it 6 months prior to u meeting the eligible credits. To do so, u do have to reach out to the school’s Head of Accounting or Dean (depends on the school) and they can provide a signed proof of you meeting that in 6 months to NASBA/AICPA for you to get ur NTS. Once you get ur NTS, u can schedule ur exam!
Folks can I include my degree in Information Technology with MBA and post baccalaureate certificate in accounting when applying for cpa exam. Does Degree in Information Technology add you more credit hours.
I believe the credits requirement doesn’t restrict you in which major they come from. So I’m my understanding, I believe it’ll add to your # credits requirement, but might be helpful looking up the reqs in the state you’re planning to get your license in.
@@statuskuo i submitted my MBA and post baccalaureate certificate in accounting but I was told I have a total of 66 credit hours. I wanted to submit my degree in Information Technology but wanted to first confirm if it can add me more credits hours. I live in indiana and its 120 credit hours to sit for the cpa exams. Let me go further and request my university to submit my Information Technology degree to Nasba. I am praying it gives me more credit hours. Thank you so much for the feedback.
I had passed Audit exam on August 22, still now I haven't appeared for next exam (FAR), My AUD credit will expire on Feb 28th 2024, I have to pass all exams by 15th December 2023......Is it still possible to pass FAR REG BEC in 2023?
Are you still in school or working? I think it’s definitely possible. REG took me 6-8 weeks to finish cause I hate tax and I wanted to get it over with. I was studying 6 hrs a day for the first two weeks.
FAR took me the longest cause I was working and a lot of content (even though I enjoyed the content). Took me about 3-4 months. 3-4 hours a day.
BEC was fasssst. 2 months. So it’s definitely possible if you wanted to power through and not take AUD again. I think it’s worth trying cause worst case, you run out of time and be in the same situation as not trying (but you’ll be a few exams ahead). Best case, you pass and finish them all!
As a risk consultant do you feel like the CPA has helped? I work in IT audit and feel like the CPA just ended up being a small boost to the resume.
Not really. I feel the same. But I think it’s about adding a skill set and keeping your options open.
1) if you want to make partner, it’s needed
2) other fields could use the skill if I want to try smth else in the future
I feel the CPA is extremely useful if you wanna become a small business owner. Cost accounting + WACC + financial accounting + IT@@statuskuo
In another video I thought you said you were a tech risk consultant and that most only need an IS degree to get that kind of job. But your also a CPA?! Did I understand this correctly? Do you plan on maintaining your licenses? Do you get paid more because your a CPA?
Yep! You only need an IS degree. I did Accounting before I decided to do IS so that was the rationale behind it. Plus, I did also enjoy accounting. So I was CPA track before I even started my job as a tech risk consultant at EY. I do plan on maintaining my license. And no, if you’re in public accounting, you don’t get paid more but if you go to private firms or in house FP&A or something in the financial realm, it does help!
How difficult is the CPA exams? If you are graduate from a top university with a BBA in accounting with a 3.6 GPA and excellent study habits?
I think it all comes down to study habits and how much effort u put into it. I have friends who had lower than 3.6 who did really well on the CPA!
Hey did you use ipad for your CPA study?
Please answer because taking this much notes in notepad isn't possible
I did! Just screenshottint the info and pasting into the notes for annotation was super helpful
@@statuskuo thankyou
And how did you practice questions on the iPad itself or notepad?
@@KK_vlogsday i did the questions on Becker app/website. Doesn’t matter which device ur on
Are Becker questions similar to real cpa questions?
I found them very similar. They prep you really well. I was more stressed about the first mock exam than the actual exams. The only difference is in BEC. The real exams had a couple IT questions that weren’t in the study materials but very minimal.
@@statuskuo hey what are the moc exams ?
What are your books / reviewers per section? 😢 😊
I just used Becker and followed their course!

I’ve always believed CPA is not for all but studying, you need God’s grace to pass 💯💯🎉

I am Reshma from India. Who rcenly came to Canada with PR. I am 2 5 now. I have degree in English and MBA in Marketing and HR. i find it difficult to get a job in Canada. I am ready to invest my time on studies which give me better ROI. I would like to gor for CPA. But I dont have any accounting experience. Am I eligible? Can you guide me? Please Answer
Hey, apologies for the late response. It depends on where ur getting ur CPA. US and Canadian ones are different I think…? US ones I believe you just have requirements of credits in classes and you should be eligible to take the exams
Could you please share your notes for these in pdf ?to support pepl like me who struggles with note taking
Hey! To clarify, I don’t take my own notes. I follow Becker’s videos in what to circle/highlight in the textbook. I only wrote down things that I had mistakes on in multiple choice practice, so they’re only in bullet point form and not organized by concept/structure. So after passing the exams, I just threw them away.
@@statuskuo What sounds harder to your "ears"? 1. Certified Public Accountant or 2. Masters Degree in Statistics?
@@scholarlyanalyst7700I mean the CPA is a license, but a lot of people go through a masters program as well to get their cpa, because it requires 150 credit hours to be officially licensed.
Can we do cpa online while living here in pakistan?
Yes have you tried contacting mr dylan,he can be of a great help
Are you talking about CPA in Canada or USA?
USA
how did u sit for the cpa with an is degree?
I doubled in Accounting and IS and did 225 credits
@@statuskuo how many classes a semester is that
@@cjmor6590 I took an average of 17 credits every quarter in college (excluding summer qtrs. I didn’t take summer classes). So about 4 classes at a minimum. Sometimes went up to 5 cause I wanted to finish in 4 years so I crammed it in. I came in with 25 credits from high school IB (not a lot but helped me get over that 225 threshold)

I have done Bachelors in Petroleum Engineering from Pakistan. Now i want to move to usa. How many credits do i get for cpa from my bachelor's degree?
how long did it take you to pass the cpa exam?
Almost one year. On average about 2.5 months per exam. 2 weeks of break in between each to recharge. That’s the perfect balance for me without burning out too soon and dragging it out too long that I lose motivation.
@@statuskuo you guys got it easy, I had to take all four parts at once
@@royharper2003 yeah that’s pretty insane 😂 props to you!
How many hours you studied a day?
Depends on how fast I wanted to take the exam. For one of them I studied 6-8 hours for the first two weeks and was able to pass the exam in 6 weeks.
For most of the time, I spent about 3 hours a day? I watched the lectures at x1.75 or x2 cause x1 was too slow. What took the most time out of the day was the MCQs and reviewing mistakes.
Obviously CPA exam has been a pain in my ass, but that won't bother me any longer I have gotten my license already thanks to you Mr Gabriel God bless you more cuz you made it possible for me
His availability is sure and faster on
