Man your tele sounds incredible! Do you know what the pickups in that custom shop fender are? Mine got the pure vintage and they're awesome but yours sounds amazing! Maybe its because of the wiring?

One of my best buddies calls me up last week, saying he just found an old guitar at a local Goodwill that he thought I’d like to see. He pulls out an old funky all brown painted Tele, and I quickly noticed it had an L series neck plate; after checking out all the hardware etc, I realized he had found an all original 1963 Fender Tele! No decal on the headstock, but all the hardware is 100% original, it even has the old-style wiring where you can’t get both pickups on at the same time! It has the correct 1963 date stamp on the neck. The only thing is that a long time ago it was painted a shit-brown color all over. It will need a refret and fingerboard leveling, and other usual repairs you’d expect for a 60s guitar, but the pickups sound great, electronics seem clean, the bridge is pretty rusty and worn out, and might need some parts (springs and screws) replaced, but otherwise I can’t believe the guy’s luck.
The Goodwill charges BY THE POUND, as they sell mostly clothing and other junk, so you wouldn’t believe how cheap it was.. Talk about LUCK!

Thanks for an excellent video! While in the market for a Tele I was unsure about these NF pickups... your illustration @11:35 is what I've been looking for in a Tele, but couldn't find from Fender. My NF53 arrived yesterday and it does exactly as you demonstrated. Now I'm looking for a second one... maybe the Myles Kennedy for something similar but with a different sonic flavor. Thanks again!

I've played guitar for over 40 years and never owned a Tele until the pandemic hit. Ordered a super-cheap Squier Tele and instantly fell in love with it. Nothing sounds like a Tele, and it's super adaptable to all sorts of music. Swapped out the cheap pickups and it's become my most-played guitar, while my Strats and Les Pauls sit in their cases.

Rhett you are correct when you say that the Fender Custom shop relic is ugly but it sounded awesome, i went shopping to add to my Tele collection and i played all the custom shop ones in the store from the most pristine painted to the most relic’ed and i ended up with the 1958 limited heavy relic’ed not pretty at all but man what a sound ,feel and mojo i could not believe the difference in those areas . Great comparison show .

What I would give to be in a room with the these 2 while they just hand off guitars and rip riffs.
Dylan, I can't wait for the day I get to tell someone, "Yeah, I remember when he didn't have millions of followers and he was every bit as awesome then as he is now"
And to Rhett, I grew up in Nashville and saw superstars almost on a daily basis so I'm not a starstruck type... but you are such a special dude to me, I think I'd lose it if I ever had the privilege of meeting you. Thank you both for sharing your craft.

I just put together a blackguard-style partscaster - MJT pine body in butterscotch, Lollar 52s, Fender vintage style bridge with Gotoh in-tune brass saddles. Musikraft is making a blackguard "Tadeo taper" neck but I couldn't wait and slapped a spare on it. It isn't too far off from Rhett's Custom Shop, but wayyyyy cheaper, and just a tiny bit of relic so it's still pretty :D

My favorite Tele right now is the 72 Thinline. Not only do I like the sound of the Wide Range pickups. I do love the 7.25 radius fretboard. I have been playing my MIM 72 Thinline Reissue straight since 2018, Last year I had put in the reissue Wide Range pickups, 1 Meg pots, a CRL selector switch and a Switchcraft input jack. So essentially, it is now an American 72 reissue. The only thing is. I didn't like the Top Hat knob, so I put back the barrel knob.

It's heavy and the frets are wearing, but it's my always-out guitar.

I dunno why every guitarist parrots "you can do bends without them choking out" when you got a flatter radius fretboard. Yes they're easier to play, but my American Vintage II Tele with a 7.25" radius doesn't choke at all when bending anywhere. If it's well built, it's well built

One of the best guitars that I own is a MIJ Telecaster from the late 80's or early 90's. I have it set up for slide guitar, with the action jacked up, and 11's for strings. It's worth more than twice what I payed for it back then. Good guitar. But I also need my whammy bar and strat style guitars..big fan of Jeff Beck. Nobody but me cares about that but me! But if you find an old MIJ Telecaster..buy it! Good guitars!

T shaped objects are extremely popular right now. te1000 black blast and '87 Eclipse NT in pearl white from LTD are my 2 current units. With a few simple mods they've both ended up being keepers. Quality tone caps, treble bleed curcuit, upgraded pots, switches and jacks. Complete opposites in every way except body outline and pickup configuration. Yet both can get a very wide range of tones. I encourage people to think outside the box a bit, when it comes to brands. You don't have to buy a Fender anymore to get the T thing going on.

Ah, guitar specs. What's popular today was unthinkable when I was young. A big, thick, beefy neck was a deal breaker. 9.5 radius was so old school, and 7.25 was unacceptable! Single coils were what was on your dad's guitar or maybe a blues player? Bone nuts were old-fashioned, just like vintage tuners or P90s. It was super strats, humbuckers, the hotter the better, locking nuts, locking tuners, locking everything! Flat radius and paper thin necks! Of course, not everyone wanted those specs, but that's what was hot, and a traditional Fender or Gibson were almost like having the "cheese touch!" (Whimpy Kid reference)

Whenever one needs to try justify to the wife / husbands why they have so many guitars, this video will come in handy. Ha.

Do you play also lapsteel? If not, is there any reason behind that?

I don’t, I’ve just always been more interested in playing slide on regular guitars. Whenever I try lap steel it feels very unnatural/clumsy to me. Not knocking lap steel players at all, just not for me

The pick guard on the PRS Tele looks so out of place. I’d take that off, would look sick.
