As you can see I'm 5 years late watching this video. I've read through most of the comments and I agree with all of them. Mr. Anderson , you are a Master of your craft. Long may you reign Sir.
I've written to you before phil, and you've graciously answered...to me the greatest pleasure of wood turning....apart from wood turning, is the joy on people's faces when I give them a bowl...each one is unique..
Well Phil, for all you put yourself down at times, you truly are an artist with such an innate understanding of wood. The platter turned out beautifully and I hope your reticence doesn’t put you off doing a coloured and textured piece in the future. Since stumbling across your channel fairly recently I have become addicted to watching. I must admit I do chuckle, but not because I think you are doing anything wrong (I’m no woodturner), but simply your wonderfully droll sense of humour helps lift my spirits and take my mind off the mindless hatred of the war here in Europe. You are giving me a sense of balance I need right now. You are a good man.🪵🎨👨🏻🎨🤩
I am a quilter and have found that I’ve learned something new each quilt I’ve made. Some techniques I’ll never repeat because they were frustrating. I see wood working is the same. I like your platter, it looks like fine china. You can now check off this technique as “tried it” and return to what you love best; which is marvelous.
I love the blue and turquoise, they look metallic. It's phenomenal. The colours are Wimbledon tennis colours and that could be a beautiful trophy platter awarded to best ball boy or girl every year.
Phil, this Birch platter with the coloring and glow has got to be imho the most beautiful piece you've made! There are a few close second place winners but that platter takes home the gold!!!
Phil you are one of a kind my friend, watching your videos is just like being there with you, incidentally somewhere I would love to be. No one else tells it like you do, you draw the viewer into each and every thing you do, every thought process and technique you employ and when your done I can imagine I’ve been part of the process. Long may you prosper and continue your vocation.
Well done Phil ,you are smart enough to know when to stop, I would have cried if you went through the bottom good luck my friend all the best from Sherwood forest UK

Haha, my daughter claimed it and then her friend claimed it. They've been hashing it out for years. Meanwhile, it's mine! I am glad you like it, too, thank you very much! 😊

As an old boy, 70 Yrs, new to wood turning, I now have you down as the man to learn from. I don’t expect to reach a skill level anywhere near that which you possess but your work is beautiful, exceptional and it is a joy to watch you at work. You have gained an enthusiastic old subscriber from Barnstaple, England. Thanks Phil. “Keep doin what you’re doin”
Wow, thanks, Stephen! I was 69 when I bought this lathe and decided to get serious about turning. I'm now 73 and don't regret the purchase or the time spent watching and learning from turning videos. We have a valuable asset in UA-cam, me thinks! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Phil, thanks for the reply. I’m amazed that you have only been turning for such a relatively short time. i haven't been watching you very long but have starting to watch all your older videos.... love them all so far...this platter is just so pretty.... thanks for sharing
You did a great job Phil! I love everything you do! Like I tell my kids…if it’s the first time you’ve done or tried something, it’s not going to be perfect! It takes practice and time to become great at something and I think you did an incredible job with all the ‘firsts’ that were included in this piece!

We both had a lots of first's on this one. This is the first time I viewed this video, I know you made it a while back. I too want to do a platter some day. It will help to muster enough courage to turn it. I surely hope my first platter turns out as beautiful as yours, but there is a fat chance it will. I will be like a scared rabbit but I will tackle it too. You were pretty calm on this project. You showed no apprehension in the way you made all your decisions. Every cut was the right one. 💡 KEEP ON TURNING
I like the outcome too. There is nothing like the luster you can get on old wood that has seasoned for years. It gets hard and almost crystalline. It develops a beautiful sheen before you even put any finish on it.
Good evening, Phil. I like your piece. It's hard to figure out what others might like, so why not just do what you like. Each of your piece is different and I like that. I don't have a texturing tool but I like the results on your platter. See ya next time.
As an artist, you were very brave to use the Tombow markers! I’m glad you got the look you wanted. They are water-soluble. I wouldn’t have taken the chance, but it turned out fabulous!
That's a beautiful piece Phil! I am new to woodturning and so it is so helpful to see those that are more experienced branch out and try new techniques. It certainly helps getting up on the learning curve by having you point out what to do or avoid. Thanks so much and hope your wife loved it!
Really enjoyed this one, Phil, especially watching how you worked through the process. And it shows the effect of the finish on making the coloring pop!
I love everything you make, especially because they are all a one of a kind piece. This platter is really beautiful. I know you might not be thrilled with it, but its beautiful and the colors look nice together.
Hey Phil, you're not giving yourself enough credit mate. The platter is absolutely fabulous. I thought the spiral effect was great. Then you added the color which took it to a whole new level... The combination of the blue with the richness of the honey was a master stroke.
Nice result. I really appreciate that you’re sharing questions and thoughts along with filming. Please continue with that. It makes me understand how you think. Also it makes me feel good that I’m not alone “problem solving n’ mind-scribbling“ through projects 😋
Yes Phil it is awesome I saw the chatoyance even before you started the sanding. What a fantastic piece of wood. Phil please look after yourself at our age you must be very careful. I am glad you feel a bit better but you still needs plenty of rest. This plate is as awesome as everything you make.

Hey Phil. I appreciate your narration of the uncertainties as you work through a problem. While this was not my favorite of the pieces I’ve watched you turn I think I learned more from this than the others. Please continue to step out of your usual lane, I find it very encouraging. BTW, I never would have guessed you are in the PNW. Me too.
Phil, you’re my favorite old coot (from one ol’ coot to another haha) to watch!! 👍👌👌 Its not just your turning..., its your commentary as you go!! And great editing too! You certainly get a thumbs up from this ol’ boy. Take care & keep pumping out the vids ol’ coot! 😂👍👍👍👍👍👍
I absolutely love the end result. I’m a commercial artist and I would recommend your using either Prismacolor or Copic markers for your next color endeavor. These are a higher quality alcohol-based marker and they have a very large assortment of colors available. You will get a much deeper saturation of color if you color the wood before the sanding sealer. If you do one coat of sanding sealer, then color you can control the depth of color and be able to add fine details. In either case spraying on the polyurethane finish is a very good idea. Take care.
Phil, humility is one thing but don’t be so self-deprecating. You’re an awesome talent and an inspiration to all who watch your videos. Beautiful platter!
Thanks, Russ. I think it comes from the way I'm feeling in the moment. Nothing is pre-planned, no script. I consider myself a student in that each piece is something new (definitely the case with this one which you know if you have seen any of my other videos) and I'm often unsure about how to do something. My commentary is just what I'm thinking as I go through the process. Thank you, Russ, for taking your time to watch and comment, much appreciated! Phil

Hi Phil, you are on the right track. It is looking great . It is fantastic, colars are nice and contrasting .Thank you for giving me this oportunati to wach you makin it.
Don’t know if you see comments from old videos but here goes. Nice to see you out of your comfort zone. At first I didn’t like the bowl. Then as you started to seal it I thought the outside, coloured, part looked like pottery. Then I thought what a great combination and I like it. Love your “normal” stuff but every now and then step out of that safe zone.
❤ the look of that bowl. I've never touched pepperwood before, but it sure looks nice finished up. When I saw how soft it was, I was worried it wood never smooth out, or maybe it would just fall apart into dust. I think I'm a little bit too heavy handed, I just know that I would never have gotten it to look that good myself. You've got that soft touch, good job.
That's so pretty! I've used Tombows for drawing and decorative lettering, but I've never used them on wood! I think the new line really made the colors pop.
As you can see I'm 5 years late watching this video. I've read through most of the comments and I agree with all of them. Mr. Anderson , you are a Master of your craft. Long may you reign Sir.

Phil

Glad you like it, K8, thank you! 😊
I keep this around just to show folks I can turn pretty stuff but, you're right, it's outside my comfort zone and who wants to go there? LOL!
you know Phil,it's like our model railroads,it my rail road so do it my way, looking good
There ya go, Fran! 😊
Thanks for watching, William! 😊
That's so pretty!
I've used Tombows for drawing and decorative lettering, but I've never used them on wood! I think the new line really made the colors pop.
Cool, thanks! 😊
The colors are awesome!
😊
What allot of work you put into that it's awesome
