I think this is one of my favorite Drumeo lessons yet. I've always loved the brushes yet always felt constrained a bit by the traditional use of them, as Florian pointed out. So I think my favorite part of the lesson is the inspiration to really think outside the box and to revisit these things that tend to collect dust in the stick bag, pull em out and see where I can apply them in a fresh way. Great lesson guys and thank you Florian!!
Great brush lesson! My favorite part was how to play mu;tible stroks with the right hand. Doubles, triplets, quads. Awesome playing Florian! Thank you Drumeo!
the thing I liked the most about this lesson was seeing brushes applied to different styles of music other than jazz, and being inspired to try melding brush technique into different styles. thanks guys, enjoy dvd's whomever wins them!
What an amazing lesson! My favorite part was how to "translate" regular grooves with sticks but instead using brushes. Absolute one the best and (for me) most useful lesson on Drumeo!
I am beginning to teach myself brushes and this video came up and all of the different sounds he was making and doing rudiments. Those books and DVD 'so are just what I need. The fact that you can use brushes for anything on drums that was a favorite part. I love this drummers ideas.
Wow! Fantastic lesson! Florian communicates his ideas very clearly- what a great teacher! I really like his use of the time pyramid. That alone is going to help me in how I approach my brush work. I have always loved playing with brushes, and always looking at fresh ways to approach using them, this entire lesson is packed with ideas. Thanks drumeo!
I like how Florian showed examples of different applications of brush work. I use brushes for non-traditional 'brush work' but I find it does not groove the way Florian makes it groove. awesome stuff guys. Thank you Florian!! and Thank you Drumeo!!
This is one of the most inspirational lessons that I have seen. Florian is so happy when he plays!! My favorite part is the way he breaks everything down and explains it in an understandable way. I have watched this many times and always pick up a little more each time. Great lesson from a great teacher and performer!!!
My favorite part was at around 36:25 when he spoke about taking what we already know and transferring it onto brush, I liked the idea of taking something 'old' and making it new again. Great Lesson, made me run to pick up my brushes and experiment with what im used to doing with sticks.
Great job there Drumeo. Florian is a great player, and he is bringing the brushes to a hole other area of implementation. They are known for jazz, but he is breaking the borders of that, bringing them to pop or any kind of music. Thanks, Dario.
REMEMBER to leave a comment letting us know your favourite part of the lesson! We’ll choose a winner at random to receive two of Florian’s books (The Complete Guide To Playing Brushes and The Drum Master Key), as well as two of his DVDs (The Brush Revolution and The Brush Secret). My favourite part was getting a notification saying that you've just uploaded a lesson with Florian and I just knew we were all in for a treat! Thanks!!
+Drumeo My favorite part is the fact that after a long time, we finally get to see a drummer who's not using a large kit with 5+ cymbals and a 22 inch bass drum....Since Peter Erskine.
+Drumeo My favorite part is that what else we could actually do with the brushes.......other than playing in jazz. And want to ask that can brushes be helpful in developing finger technique?
Never used brushes before, so I appreciated the basic introduction at around 10:00. Besides that I loved to see how passionate he is playing. Thank you!
drumeo! you guys are so amazing! this lesson and the matt garstka lesson are two i must have watched 50 times, you have inspired me to start taking my drumming to the next level! i have just purchased my membership! i really appreciate everything you have all done for the drumming community. i just recently joined my highschool jazz band and have no idea how to play most of the latin charts ive been given (songo, samba, afro cuban, and the like) and your lessons are a tremendous help! thank you so much for helping me take my drumming seriously while keeping it insanely fun! much love to you all :)
My favour part of the lesson was the play throughs "hard rise was the best" it made me want to go out and buy some brushes and start to learn to play with bushes which is something i have never wanted to do before i thought bushes where boring until i watched this !! thank you drumeo awesome lesson !!
Favorites parts was those rudiments and the three beautiful musics. Awesome lesson! It definitely encouraged me to try playing with some brushes. Thanks a lot Florian. And, as always, thanks a lot drumeo!
Amazing lesson!! Love it! i was waiting for a lessonlike this about brushes! Anyway my favourite part was when Florian demonstrated the technique how to make subdivision with brushes! Thank a lot Drumeo and Florian for this incredible and inspirating lesson!!
This is so relevant to my life right now!! Was just thinking today about how little I know about brushing and this video just happened to be uploaded! Favorite part was when he was talking about being 14 learning brushes because I felt exactly like that- just knowing that one brush rhythm- and now I know much more!
My favorite part of the lesson is the part where he talks about switching sticks to brushes as I'm in a band and I know that kind of feel.really nice lesson, this make me want to start learning brushes now!
I can't choose just one favourite part, the whole lesson was amazing! Brushes are a tottaly new subject to me and I really love this class! Thanks a lot Florian and Drumeo!
My favorite part was him showing the technique for singles and doubles. I been able to take a lot away from Florian's technique, finally really understanding how to play with brushes.
I'd say my favorite part was the idea of overdubbing drum parts with brushes. Such a great idea that gives brushes even more importance in contemporary music.
Great teaching here... I feel this will free me up when I go to practice with brushes, rather than thinking "oh, now I've got to forget everything I've learned and go look up some brush lessons..". Translating stick rudiments was my favorite part.
i really enjoyed this whole lesson, so much can be explored in the world of brushes. I feel like most drummers only scratch the surface and use the brushes as a low volume or slow tempo advice. it can be so much more! thank you Florian for showing us this world of brush playing!
My favorite part is totally the "Skyfall Remix" he plays at the beginning---this was my first time ever hearing Florian play and it was INCREDIBLE and INSPIRING!! Oh my word. Much love, man!!!
good god! this guy has a super amazing understanding of drumming and playing with brushes…the whole video is fantastic but my favorite part it is watching that ride cymbal wobble on and on and on after it is struck during that first song in the beginning…very very cool lesson and super fun piece in the beginning; very musical use of brushes and a really sweet sounding set-up; that floor tom really growls…AND Florian really kicks ash on those brushes! This lesson left me feeling really re-inspired. Thanks Drumeo for all you do from drummers at all levels and all around the world. I am going to have to watch this over and over and over again to absorb all the in-depth instruction.
My favourite part of the lesson was the "Right Hand Lead" concept. Something I never even thought about while playing brushes. But then again, my favourite part of the lesson was EVERYTHING as it was all very valuable information.
duuuuude Florian kills it. I've got basically no skill when it comes to brush playing, and because i don't really play jazz ever, it's been low on my priority list. hearing all of the awesome stuff he's doing is giving some serious inspiration to practice with brushes though! awesome texture!
My Favourite part was on 07:40 - 13:46 . I love he told to us especially me about how his struggling using brushes against the modern beat when he (just like myself) only knew about simple swing pattern and how he explained about the basic backbeat to solve it. By the way, for overall I love how the way mr.Florian explained, he is really a great teacher.
My favorite part was hearing Florian get into some demonstrations for practical brush grooves in other styles outside of swing or jazz. Brushes have a great texture for a lot of todays singer songwriter music, or indie, ice for him to lay out some ways to venture out of just "stirring the pot"
Loved the lesson! I love his music choice and how he manipulates the nature of the brushes to make beautiful music! He reminds me of Jeff Hamilton a lot with his clever use of brushes for the most articulate and particular sounds. My favorite part of the lesson was his use of horizontal strokes to create smooth strokes. That's how I was taught to use brushes and I can't seem to find many drummers using that technique today! Awesome lesson!
Yet another awesome lesson from our folks at Drumeo! What's not to like? Favourite part...Solo section on the last song was mint! So smooth and musical, Florian is a beast!
Wow, great lesson. I never knew the potential behind brushes. This is so amazing. My favorite part was the groupings with brushes during his stick trick discussion. Very excited to try it.
+Levi Gonzales - Congratulations, Levi! You've been chosen as the winner for Florian Alexandru-Zorn's brush educational bundle. Please message me at justin@drumeo.com to claim your prize. :)
Florian is one of my favorite drummers and his dvd, The Brush Secret, is my go-to source whenever I need to "brush up" (pun intended) on brush techniques. My favorite part of this lesson is how he shows you how to use brushes on grooves we normally play with sticks. I can't wait for his drumeo courses.
Wow. What a beast. He explains well too. My favourite bit was definitely the linear grooves and 16th note stuff. I will for sure be trying those ideas next time i'm sat in front of my kit!!
Awesome lesson! I've never learned how to use brushes and when I did use them, I used them like regular sticks for a low volume setting. The translation of rudiment from sticks to brushes was my favorite part. Very inspiring! Thanks Florian and Drumeo!
When I was taking music in College back in Ontario, I always loved playing with brushes. This lesson has opened up so many different possibilities and put so many ideas in my head for incorporating them into the projects i'm involved with now. Great lesson guys!

I'm aware that there are Hot Rods that people use, but there is something intriguing about the sonic quality of brushes on skins that is pleasing.
Very inspiring lesson. You can tell he is also teaching. Favourite part: Alexander reiterating ... one you are practicing something ....you have to think why are doing this...
Holy crap this guy's a monster! He just throws down a paradiddle over quints like nothing to create a 4 over 5 polyrhythm, what!? That solo near the end too! Seamless transitions to all the essential rudiments! Hertas? Check! Paradiddles? Check! Paradiddle-diddles? Check! And more! Amazing orchestration. You know he spent at least the requisite 10,000 hours to master thsoe brushes. And when he switches to sticks, still awesome grooves! A+ Now I'm gonna go get some brushes.
I really appreciate this drumming lesson/seminar. Its inspiring and shows another way to think with brushes apart from swing. Thanks Drumeo and Florian!
my favourite part of this amazing lesson is when Florian demonstrated the technique how to make subdivision with the brushes. thanx for another great lesson!
My favorite part of this lesson was his break down of quintuplets. Anika Nilles & Florian both stressed the "Un-i-ver-si-ty" counting technique. I will be working on comfortably executing them in my playing. I really appreciate these lessons Drumeo. Thanks a lot!
I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of the video, but I think my favorite part was learning about the origins of using brushes from the use of fly swatters in the early studio. Certainly makes sense, those early acoustic recordings had one huge cone that acted as the mic and every one was placed before it based on volume, the louder players towards the back of the room. Thanks so much for posting this wonderful video!
wooow AMAZING LESSON CAN'T WAIT TOP GET ALL THESE TIPS A TRY!!! totally loved the whole lesson , but my favourite part was when Florian took the hookey clave and turned it into that samba!!! really good :)
Really great stuff! Brushes have always been a mistery for me. I've gotten some pointers from some of my previous teachers and I've alsoe bought Florians first book, which is great and I've started to graps the concept. But after all years I've never found one who've explained how to hold the burshes, I mean the grip. That's something I've been messing around with myself and trying to figure out how to hold the brushes to get a great brush sound. Every teacher have always been willing to teach the playing, but non of have talked about the girp which is essential in my oppinon. So to make a long story short, Florian explaned this very good and understanble. That's my biggest take away from this!
Being new with brushes, I thought the linear motion breakdown at 18:38, following that 16th note groove was my favourite part, until i saw the brush-trick groove at 58:12. Thanks!
My Favorite part of The drummer lesson was learning New sweep techniques and how to hold The brushes. About time we hear more brushes in drumming to enhance Dynamics. Great Video. Hey Andrew, Nice to See you've come along Way Since cmsdrumday when i Last Saw you play. All The best. G
My favorite part of the lesson is the tricks you can do with the brushes like the rim bounce and rolling the brushes across the head. @brushplaying And you dont have to play brushes using traditional method. Boom! Well done !
Absolutely amazing! No words to define this Video! He has a great sense of rythm and sound. This lesson gave me a lot to work on! Thank you Drumeo and thank to Florian
I absolutely love the idea of using brushes for the time pyramid. It is such a simple but effective way to build speed with the brush work! I also loved the Gaddisms lol. Thank you Drumeo and Florian!
What an amazing drummer ! Thanks Drumeo and Florian ! My favorite part was the demonstration of brushes with different feels and groove ! Thanks guys !!
Wow! This lesson was extremely helpful! Florian is an Amazing drummer and it is surprising how he can use brushes. His technique can be applied to almost every kind of music, not only modern drumming! I like the Skyfall Remix at the beginning of the lesson! amazing
Hi Florian, Great lesson, I've been looking at several videos on brushes and by far this lesson is the best. I enjoyed seeing how you convert stick technique to the brushes. I can't wait to take many of the techniques demonstrated to my Kit. I would love to see a lesson on how to use the many new brushes. Last time I went to buy a set of brushes I was very confused about what I need or should get, This lesson has provided a lot of info. I can't wait to hit my drum shop. Regards,
My favorite part would be seeing brushes played in a matched grip setting~! which is really a moral boost for me to try it as I'm not a traditional grip player. I've always been fascinated with Florian's approaches & would love to have more in depth materials to study. Thanks Drumeo~!
I also like the samba clave thingy.. Among other parts of the lesson. With the samba base / hi hats - reminds me of stuff you can do with your students for entry level stuff :)
I love Florian's take on brushes. It's inspiring!!! His approach to 16ths is great for popish/rockish oriented music! Thanks drumeo for the lesson!
the thing I liked the most about this lesson was seeing brushes applied to different styles of music other than jazz, and being inspired to try melding brush technique into different styles. thanks guys, enjoy dvd's whomever wins them!

I just loved how Florian took a major concept from someone else´s playing (Gadd + 5 stroke rolls) and took it into the brush style. Pretty impressing

A true artist lots of hard work, natural talent and creativity!
Never used brushes before, so I appreciated the basic introduction at around 10:00. Besides that I loved to see how passionate he is playing. Thank you!
I love the application of taking any beat and putting brushes in the equation with any type of drumming you can do with sticks.
Wow! I am suddenly SO inspired to put down my sticks and pick up the brushes! Favorite part? The whole thing!! Thanx Florian! And thanx Drumeo!

Great lesson. Favorite part is explaining the the flams within the circular motion to produce sound. I learned a lot just form that.
Great lesson, best bit - explaining the history and different types of brushes. I'll be getting some split ones.
Great teaching here... I feel this will free me up when I go to practice with brushes, rather than thinking "oh, now I've got to forget everything I've learned and go look up some brush lessons..". Translating stick rudiments was my favorite part.

A true master on the brushes! Thank you Drumeo for all the great lessons
I love all the inspiring and innovation methods he uses to execute his sounds. Great playing!!!
My favourite part of the lesson was that drum and bass beat dave made him play. I really liked this lesson it was very interesting, thx Drumeo
duuuuude Florian kills it.
My favorite part was the great techniques that are being shared by Florian!
My favorite part was hearing Florian get into some demonstrations for practical brush grooves in other styles outside of swing or jazz. Brushes have a great texture for a lot of todays singer songwriter music, or indie, ice for him to lay out some ways to venture out of just "stirring the pot"
It's just so awesome how he took the «hockey clave» and applied it on the set with the brushes. It's sound so good!
That intro is definitely my favourite part ! Florian's ability with brushes is something else.
Really loving how the ride cymbal moves after he hit it

When I was taking music in College back in Ontario, I always loved playing with brushes. This lesson has opened up so many different possibilities and put so many ideas in my head for incorporating them into the projects i'm involved with now. Great lesson guys!
Best part of the lesson was that i didn't even know this guy and suddenly my whole world changed about my drum playing. Awesome!!!
Am I the only one that prefers brushes to drum sticks or mallets? I love the moderate sound levels and the complex attack, much longer than that of a stick and sharper than that of a mallet. I'm aware that there are Hot Rods that people use, but there is something intriguing about the sonic quality of brushes on skins that is pleasing.
My favourite part is when ı say "ı must buy brushes" and it start with first second of video. You guys awesome
I absolutely love the idea of using brushes for the time pyramid. It is such a simple but effective way to build speed with the brush work! I also loved the Gaddisms lol. Thank you Drumeo and Florian!
Favorite part of the lesson was the whole thing! I love this guy's work with brushes. This lesson helped me so much!
I like the Skyfall Remix at the beginning of the lesson! amazing
Hi Florian,
Great lesson, I've been looking at several videos on brushes and by far this lesson is the best.
Regards,
Love the sixteenth-note beats! The linear motion seems really effective, hope to see a brush revival in the drumming world soon!
Loved it, i'm never going to look at brushes the same ever again.
My favorite part would be seeing brushes played in a matched grip setting~! which is really a moral boost for me to try it as I'm not a traditional grip player. I've always been fascinated with Florian's approaches & would love to have more in depth materials to study. Thanks Drumeo~!
Fantastic lesson. Made me really work harder on my brush work.
Cheers
What an incredible teacher !😊
I also like the samba clave thingy.. Among other parts of the lesson. With the samba base / hi hats - reminds me of stuff you can do with your students for entry level stuff :)
I just love this "indian" counting! It sounds sooo cool :)
Great lesson! My favorite part: at 31:10, Florian says words of wisdom. "you're doing this thing for purpose...you're learning it way more easier".
Oh damn, trip-hop brush work
