Annika is the real deal. She is such a breath of fresh air. She doesn't use stupid grins to get views. Her playing speaks for it's self.

I liked the Exploring Quintuplets part especially at 21:50, as things kind of fell into place for me as to how "easily" one can utilize quintuplets in a groove-context. It kind of takes away the sting of trying to chronologically fit an odd number in any given pulse parameter. Once it´s contextualized in a groove, or a sticking orchestration - it becomes more instinctively comprehensible and doable, even for young drummers. GREAT!!! THANK YOU!!!

This is the kind of stuff I most enjoy. I've always loved drumming alongside progressive, constantly shifting, weird time signature, uncommon patterns, you name it, music. And I can't get over how each song she plays in this lesson sounds so amazing. There are so many cool harmonies and sweet fills going on.... She is a very controlled player. Love it!

I just watched the entire video and she hurt my head so bad, I'm going to sleep. Way beyond my ability.
The first time I learned that quintuplets were a thing was when I bought Garry Chaffe's Sticking Patterns in 1998. I feel like I'm slowly getting the hang of it. Oh here's something that might actually help: Zombi Woof. The quintuplet unisono 5 seconds in is so unique that that's what I thought about every time I played quinutplets for years.
Also even tho I'm relatively ok with quintuplets, nobody I have ever played with is, so that's something that stayed in the practice room.

+Drumeo My favorite part was the description of the quintuplets. I love how she explained her curiosity on the subdivision and committed herself to find all the embedded patterns inside those 5 notes. It's something we COULD all do, but few have spent the time and self discipline to make it sound so natural. I also enjoyed that she teaches this concept to her young students - of course they pick it up as naturally as sixteenth notes!

No doubt. If I closed my eyes I am sure I could have heard Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree. And I love the cymbals, or at least her ability to make them sound awesome. It's not about the look, but the sound.

This video has been hugely helpful and informational on grooves, fills, and song composition. 5's, 7's, and 9's have been the missing link for my fills to create more tension and musicality. I have always felt intimidated by trying to utilize odd subdivisions in practical applications within a band setting but now feel that I'm ready having played kit for 25 years now. This video couldn't have crossed my path at a better time. Thank you guys. Anika, you are an amazing drummer, musician, and song writer!

Nick's Drumming i did it once but didnt realy like it.
I agree. I hit a point where I was doing a lot of same-ol-same-ol tom fills. I have 4 up and 2 down and everything started to just sound boring and muscle memory was making it worse. I moved my 16" floor tom over to my left-side by hi-hat, and took the #4 rack and put it first and it really helped me get out of my rut. Same efforts produced more interesting fills and tripped up the muscle memory that was working against me.
She is not the only one who does that...Marco Minnemann (also form Germany) does it; and so does Kenny Aronoff

I've been back to watch this lesson several times now... but one thing that I'd love to know about Anika's kit are which heads she is using? Look like some sort fo frosted/hazy Evans? What head is on the batter side of the snare? Looks like it has some sort of controlled sound layer/dot? Are they some sort of hydraulic head? I still can't get over how amazing her auxiliary snare sounds, too. I've thrown a remo pinstripe and downtuned one of my vintage gretsch round badge snares to emulate her sound. I dont even play pop drums, but I love the tones and sounds of her kit!
+Drew Kane I think they're evans ec2 on the two mounted toms and an ec reverse dot on the snare.
The tom heads are Frosted EC2s. I've used them, and they're very good. Less coating than a coated Remo Pinstripe, but enough you notice a difference between frosted and clear.
The side snare sound can be done by simply putting an old head upside down atop your tuned snare. Benny Greb does that, and it sounds fabulous.
Awesome playing, she kicks ass and you can tell she embodies the spirit of drumming wholly.
Flawless sticking and foot work! I'm even digging the choice of cymbals to add color!

I've been playing drums on/off for 10 years and just recently found your channel. This has been very helpful since I'm pretty much on my own right now to make progress with this instrument... and believe me it hasn't been the most motivating times. These lessons help me keep going and learn new stuff. I kinda feel the drive of progression again.

There are no female drummers...there are drummers. I would not count Annika as an "inspiration" in the sense that I don't want to play like her, but she is definitely a role model and maybe some of her ideas work for me; for example, I switched the order of my toms after her explanation as to why her trapset is that way. My point is...it has nothing to do with wether she is a woman or a man, she is a great drummer! And I aspire to become better each day and become the dummer that I need; since I'm the only member of my band.
I play bass, guitar, drums, violin, vocalist, I can also play keys and I have to record and produce myself since no studio in my area is worth a dime and they are expensive. Anyways, Annika! Great drummer :3

IDK guys, most beginners do most of the practice on a practice pad and go to rehearsal space to play real drums 2-3 times a week.

I don't know why youtube promotes Meytal so much. Anika is clearly a far better drummer!
Totally agree. My mates would go on and on about Meytal's drumming. I'd point them in the direction of Anika and they are floored by her skill and how effortless she floats around the kit. One of my favourites for sure.

They completely different drummers Anika is new age and completely original, Meytal is heavy metal mostly and musically educated, in LA music academy as a matter of fact that is why she covers songs so perfectly.
I bet Meytal would totally have a hard time playing this groove.
I used to be subbed to meytal... Then I heard Troy wright, Luke holland and other actually good drummers and realized the only thing she had going for her were the looks

Favourite part is seeing how she incorporates ghost notes in accordance to what the singles ask for, great intuition for rudiments that aren´t soo easy to understand....beast in her genre.

She is really good. People pretend that it doesn't matter what gender you are, and there's no reason to point out her gender, but that's rubbish. People DO treat female drummers differently, either in positive or negative ways - eg. Often, people are *amazed* by a female drummer, who's average at best. Maybe it's just because there are more male drummers out there, who knows.
Anyway, this woman is definitely one of the best female players I've ever seen.

Please explain to me. At 1:43 she started massive filling. After that, how can she start right at time when song started? Does drummers (in general) have some counter or what how much seconds remaining to start playing at time? Or it is just big skill to be in time after such soloing? There are also more such parts in first song.
+Marek Well, it's her song so she probably just knows when to start and stop. Most drummers just have the jam memorized or somebody else counting them in.

I believe she also has a click over the music in her earpiece. But it's not cheating, she could probably do it without a click, she regards timekeeping as the #1 job of a drummer.
uhh.. of course she is keeping the count herself.. That is a drummers job. Keeping everyone in time is the difference between a band making music or making noise. Also, even though it sounds incredibly fast (and is) remember that it is still split up into even (as in same length) sub-divisions. Thinking of it this way makes it easier to quantify and keep the time. Ofc. she is a great drummer aswell =j
