    This is a lesson in not judging a book by its cover. If you saw this guy walking around the rehearsal space, you might see him as the drummer for Marilyn Manson or Foreigner, but who would've guessed that he was a straight-up brush master? So much respect.

      The rock look is a haircut and clothes. Many successful rock drummers were into jazz and highschool marching band before they were rockets. Look at Zappa as a teen! 😂

      Almost all the early rockers had jazz exposure/knowledge. Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the Hendrix Experience, could swing hard. As could Ian Paice, Deep Purple’s drummer. The Beatles used ‘jazz’ chord structures in their compositions. Charlie Watts had his own jazz big band later in his life. Ultimately, music is music.

      Yeah, definitely some of the best brushwork, if not THE best I’ve ever seen. Not only is he musical and technically skillful, he’s very entertaining with the brushes as well - a musician and a performer. Loved this lesson, I’ll be using this stuff for life! Thank you!

    Thank you this is fabelous and creative. I am a new drummer, 62 and loving it. I use brushes a lot becasue the places our band plays have very basic drum sets. Brushes are so versatile... try the nylon ones.. Ive been making my ownout of bits and pieces I have in the shed. My cord tie brushes are heavy duty, they sound very raw...Try the wire brushes on the cojon ..sounds great

    What an amazing lesson. I love how prepared he was, and I LOVE that he kept it all about sound - every technique and approach was about the sound it produces, and what we can add to the music with brushes. That being said, I would love if you guys brought him back for a follow up to discuss how to expand upon this. Every time I learn the basics of brushes it's enlightening, but I can't quite cross the gap into filling like he does in this video and getting more comfortable adding the flourishes and patterns that make brush playing really exciting without losing the flow. I'd love to get more insight, from him in particular, into how to go beyond the principles discussed here and become a killer brush player.

      Hey Jake! Did you check out Benny Grebs "Language Of Drumming"? I just wanted to mention this, because I assume the concepts presented in that Book/DVD might be just what you are looking for. Greb presents a "System" how to come up with good ideas which can be used musically. If you manage to translate that to brushes, I think you will break through that "wall" you described.
      And anyways, it's a great Drummin DVD, I definetly recommend it! :)

    • @seeminglymodo
      @seeminglymodo 4 роки тому +2

      @@MaxMustermann-cj1wk Hey! I actually do have that Book/DVD but I haven't had a chance to use it yet. I bought it because I realized I've subconsciously infused Benny Greb's style into my playing (what I can do that is!) and I figured I should study him directly since I love what he does so much. I'm glad you said that his concept could help with my brush playing cause now I have even more reason to dive into that book!
      Thanks for the suggestion!

    • @MaxMustermann-cj1wk
      @MaxMustermann-cj1wk 4 роки тому +1

      @@seeminglymodo Wow isn't that great! Working with his material will definetly pay off, the more the better!
      No coincidence that you play similar to Greb. It's because we all have the same teacher: Music itself. That's what Greb learned and teaches, it's all about music.
      Anyway, I wish you great success!
      I'll get back to practicing those nice Brush patterns :)
      Greetings from germany!

    Wonderful lesson on brushes. Brushes intimidated me for decades simply because I was ignorant of their capabilities. Now I have different models of wire brushes (yes, there are other materials, but I prefer wire) in various weights and designs which I use according to the size of the venue and the instruments involved. I also have different snare drums with different types of heads for the same reason. I think the snare drums sound so much better with brushes when I don't engage the snares.
    When I listen to soft jazz, my focus is always on the brushes. My wife gets tired of me saying, "Can you hear the brushes?".
