When I think of brush-specific warm-ups there's only one that comes to mind, and that's Alan Dawson's rudimental ritual. However, although it's an incredible warmup for developing rudiments, coordination, wrist and finger technique, it's not really a brush warmup.
I've always been of the belief that brushes do what sticks cannot, and that is to sweep! It's what makes them unique. But I don't really know of any warm-ups that include lateral movement. So I thought I would create one.
I hope you like it.

Honestly that background track kind of slaps
Right on!
This is great mate. Cheers 🥁🇦🇺
This is what i need at this moment 😊
So glad you like it 😊
This is a warmup?! It is getting really funky at the end. My goodness. I love the sweeping sound and then those taps.. what?! That takes a lot of skill.
I never liked jazz. Was raised with the notion that drums should be played with sticks, but this is truly marvelous. Thanks man!
Thank you so much. I’m really glad you dig it 😊
Such an enjoyable warm up. Great tool and it feels like a jam! ❤
Thanks so much, I'm glad you like it!
The value in this video alone😳😳 I can’t believe this. This is phenomenal! 🤩
Im pretty new and still wondering A LOT about what is even goin on with this side of drumming. Years ago I felt it may be… hands-down, the most creative and mindblowing of all instruments.. just cuz it’s so peculiar.
To use THOSE as a toolbox of sounds to choose from and creatively arrange… BIZARRE tbh. 🧐but bizarre in the greatest f’ing way possible!😎😎
but THANK YOU sooo much Anthony. Your a good soul! cheers🍻
Thank you so much for this!
I did not know brush techniques are so deep. Thank you for great video.
Excellent work, very nice sound. Thanks for sharing. Merci from France 😀🙏🙏
So glad you like it. Thank you 😊
thank you
You're welcome!
Absolutely beautiful. Very creative, thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much 😊
Great loved it Anthony, I just about hung in there for the full 20 minuets with a few idiosyncrasies! I’m off to your patron web section🐾🐾🐾🐾
Thanks Josefina, I'm glad you like it! Feel free to sign up to the Patreon to get the PDF and practice track to this lesson and many more!
Love it! What a brilliant idea. Thank you for this great tutorial.

I’m so glad you like it ☺️
This is a fantastic warmup, Anthony. Kudos!

Thank you Vladimir!
Beatiful lessons thank you
My pleasure
Great warmup routine, a very good challenge for me.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
Beautiful mate : )
Thanks Joe
Good stuff, brother! Definitely more advanced tempos. Slowing it down, a lot! 😅
Thanks so much brother!
Hi, Anthony! Such great idea! Where can I get these tracks for practice?😊
Vernice,man...
Thanks mate!
I don't play the drums or anything but I like to listen the brush touching the drums
Me too!
Love the 20 min. Brush warmup and the book! At the end of the 20 min brush warm up, you mention another brush warm up that’s more challenging and that the link is in the bio. I have not been able to find what you called the lateral brush routine
My apologies! Here’s the link: www.stanislavskimusic.com/the-stanislavski-lateral-brush-routine
Thank you so much! Your E book and video warmup are wonderful!
Fantastic! I was just wondering if there was a good warmup to combine all the brushstrokes. These 16th note ones are a killer though 😅
Thank you so much, I’m glad you like it ☺️
Your videos are great! I'm confused about the different materials on your website. You have the 1) Phrasing and Freedom book. Then it looks like you have 3 courses online on your website: 2) Lateral Technique, 3) Gain Freedom and 4) Warmup. Finally, you have the 5) 30-day kickstart. Can you please explain the difference between all of these? I'm trying to choose what is best for me (intermediate/early advanced drummer). Thanks!
Thanks for the question! It all depends on what you're after!
Courses:
- Gain Freedom goes deep into lateral sweeping techniques
- Core Techniques takes those techniques and puts it into 3 core patterns that allow you to build many groove upon
- Lateral Brush Warmup is an intensive into various stickings and rhythmic groupings which allow you to play a bucket load of different phrases
30-Day Kickstart:
- an introduction into all the above, but doesn't go into any detail about technique. As it's a free resource, there's quite a bit that I leave out, however, it's still very useful.
Phrasing and Freedom book:
- If you like having a physical brush resource, then this will give you an overview of the 1st two courses with a large focus on what you'd need in many musical situations. I don't go into any detail on technique as I think that's hard to do in a book, but over 1000 people have bought it and love it.
I hope that helps! To be honest, I'm glad you asked because it's made me realise that I need to make all of this clearer. Thank you!
@@LuvskiDrums Great reply! And glad this'll help clarify your lessons for other people. I'll chew on this and check out one or some of your resources. Thanks!
@@neilsachs Thank you!
Is your book a physical old fashioned one or just on line?
Hey Steven, it certainly is a physical old fashioned book! You can order it here if you like: phrasingandfreedomwithbrushes.com
What brush and hi-hat cymbals do you use?
In this video I'm using 13" Bosphorus Syncopation hats
Hi teacher
Thank you so much!
@@user-vg1hm3nd8g You're welcome!
Is this what is now called the "Lateral Brush Routine" course?
No! The Lateral Brush Routine is a much harder and advanced ‘warmup’.
@@LuvskiDrums I'm nearing the end of the 30 day jumpstart, and it has been challenging and enjoyable. Thank you for that. I'm thinking the Lateral Brush Routine may be the next best step. Thoughts? I really enjoyed Dawson's Rudimental Ritual when I worked on that several years back.
@@thebluecollardrummer9032 I think that's a great idea! Go for it
@@LuvskiDrums Core Techniques or Brush Routine? Which is a better starting point do you reckon?
@@thebluecollardrummer9032 definitely go Core Techniques first!
Oh, pardon I saw already 😅
