    The best video X Type site on UA-cam. I have solved a lot of problems with my X Types by staying away from the 2,5 and 3ltr models and just sticking with the 2.1ltr petrol as they are only front wheel drive. No transfer box or rear drive system and shaft that runs under the petrol tank and I am able to replace all plugs and coils without removing the intake manifolds. And never try and remove the oil sump pan on a 2.5 or 3ltr. This car might have been a better more practical car with a 2.5ltr 4 cylinder petrol engine. Anyway no one reads my responces, probably because I never say what readers want to hear, but I keep writing them because I love these little X Types and sympathise with any one in trouble with one.

    I have an '04 3.0 and i love it! It's a great car! And you're spot on when it comes to how well it handles on windy country roads, you can out-run anyone in it. Taking it along the countryside is one of my favorite things to do! I've had mine for 2 years now, and I have yet to have any problems with it (knock on wood!)

      I'm looking at purchasing a 2004 X-type 3.0 . It appears to be a sound car, only 50k miles on it. Is there anything you can share - tips, things to look out for, etc. things you wish you'd known. Also, the CD changer - on the 2004, is it in the trunk ?

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  7 років тому +2

      The mileage is low so it shouldn't have worn any of its parts out. I've read the 2004 model is prone to rust so have the bodywork, linkages, bushes and bearings checked. Also the reluctor rings on the brake hubs rust and are expensive to replace. Check the aircon works by driving for at least 20 miles with it on. The CD changer is in the LHS of the trunk but it was an optional extra so make sure it is there. Finally make sure there are no engine management lights on. If you buy it change all the gearbox oils at 60000 miles to prevent them drying out and wrecking the drive train. Good luck.

      If you are buying it ready to do it up it might be alright. Its obviously had a crash.The front bumper is damaged and the shut lines all wrong. The radiator, condenser and oil cooler are behind there. There is a dent in the door and a spoiler has been taken off the boot. I would guess this car has been thrashed. I would have liked to see the dials with the engine running to check the rpm and managements light. It seems honestly described - after all it is working.

    I have a 2003 Jaguar X Type with the 3.0 engine. I just had the 2 rubber seals for the side of the intake done and all of the codes are gone. I also smell oil like you said so I'll change that sensor. I also have the rust in the door jams I need to have fixed. I have only had this car for 1 week and this video is a big help. Thank you for this video

    I'm planning on getting a Jaguar X-Type 2005 soon, this has been so helpful in demonstrating the things I need to look for when I start looking at cars from deals. As you recommended I've also purchased an engine diagnostic device, so I'm sure that will also come in handy when I check the car out.
    Really great video with a wealth of knowledge about how these cars are great, can go wrong, but are worth keeping alive.

    I have a 2004 3.0 X-type as well as a 2011 Mercedes E-550 sport in Halifax , Canada. The Jag only has 46,000 km. My Dad bought it used, (he passed away last year at 89 and I inherited the car), and it's been trouble free. The wood used on these is a real maple veneer, by the way. I was also born in Southend on Sea, (Leigh on Sea) and good to see a video from someone living in the area!! Cheers and best!!

    It is a Jag. And a Jag costs money. Pure and simple. Bought mine in 2010. Is a 2002 Sport. And like you said there is no greater fun than to see young blokes pulling up on your rear bumper with a hell of a noise. Then you put your foot down and that is when the beast roars into life. No way they can keep up with it. Common sense (aka costwise) I should have gotten rid of her, but for the love of me, I cannot. She has given me more satisfaction in driving than any car before. So she is in for the duration of her life. Or mine. Or both.

    Hi csg I'm about a day away from buying a 2004 x type 2.1v6 auto with full leather and 69 thou on the clock. it looks in good order and is only £1200 . I've got a super nice merc c class and was gonna buy the x type as a 2nd car rag around simply because I've always fancied one, and you only live once. Your vid has been very useful. I've heard lots of bad things about these cars but now my mind is at ease....cheers

      I don't know anything about about the 2.1 but Parkers says this - There is also a 2.1-litre V6 (badged a 2.0-litre) petrol model with front-wheel drive. With 157bhp its performance is quick enough, but it's a much thirstier engine than four-cylinder motors with similar power................ By 2004 all the glitches had been sorted and the equipment level upgraded. Have fun.

    I like your style and sense of humour, which I guess is an asset if you own a Jaguar X-Type. I have the 2.0 litre Diesel manual box which is a nice car, but it lacks the 4 wheel drive option. I made it to the end of your video then it stopped suddenly, shame as I was finding it very entertaining. Nice to see a video that is constructive and not repetitive as so many are.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  7 років тому

      Thanks for your kind review and I hope the video is helpful. I bought this car particularly because it is a four wheel drive and petrol manual. i don't really like diesels even though my family car is one and is very good. The video ends with me saying that it's an old man's car that can outrun most other cars. Perhaps it is a glitch in UA-cam.

    2003 X-Type 2.5. 180,000 and loving it…. Original owner. Minimal repairs, faithfully serviced every 10,000 miles. Only complaint is in the transmission.
    If driving around 45 to 65 and I modestly want to pop some speed to change lanes, She can uncomfortably lag between gears (it’s been the way since new).

    Great video! I've had my 2001, 2.5l for two years now and absolutely love it. Great design, very very comfy for long trips, and when you push that pedal you won't be disappointed. I had to change most of the bushes, front brakes disk and pads, a servo high pressure pipe, some suspension parts and clean the air con but the car wasn't serviced for 2 years when I got it so was expecting some expenses. I still got a few problems to solve, for some reason if I don't keep the ac on there will be mist on my windows, the car is outstandingly clean and the pollen filter was changed 1 month ago but for some reason can't get rid of this problem. AC was cleaned twice as well. I also have the engine light on wanted to change the O2 sensor as the mechanics told me it's faulty however it is the second time when they "forget to do it". Also the door locks sometimes gives me trouble, nothing to worry about but quite annoying. Changed the blade wipers as well with Bosch Aerotwin since the old ones were dead. Great car all around, I wanted one so bad as I loved how it looks and the fact that you can have both luxury and a nice amount of hp. Great car for the money.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  6 років тому

      Sounds nice. In regards to the misting problem the only thing I can think of is that there is a tiny leak from the heater matrix or connecting pipes - enough to steam up the windows but without losing lots of water.

    Great video and refreshingly honest and realistic video. I came here as I was thinking about buying a used Jag. I think on the whole I won't be going down the X-type route. Seems to have quite common problems and I'm looking for relatively fuss free motoring. Think I remember watching a video about this jag needing to drop the fuel tank to fix something simple. Thank you for a great honest video. Wish more videos were made giving realistic prices when things go wrong. By the way I've owned a Rover 75 automatic diesel for the last 5 years. it doesn't seem to have as many regular faults like your car has. Better the devil you know sometimes.

    I bought one with 170'000 kilometers. Only had the motor lamp come on a few times after turning on the cruise control and had to replace the thermostat and it seems that also the cooling fan is now defective or the sensor for the coolant temperature as I have overheating in city traffic. What also doesn't work anymore is the automatic opening of the door after turning off the motor. Other than that, I didn't have any problems in the 2 years that I'm driving it.

    Interesting review. You've mentioned the two biggest faults with the X-Type. The sills and the bendy air vents above the dashboard. I've got the 2002 model. My drivers side sill will need welding next year. I've also got the bendy vents. Oh. Those sensors that you haven't got connected. Those would be for the auto headlights or the auto windscreen wipers (I've got both on mine).
    The standard audio system is excellent for what it is. Why people want to premium system puzzles me (Who wants to sound like a chav in a Vauxhall Nova?). I added the CD changer to my Jag. Yours was a factory fit. When I fitted my changer. I found that the loom had a plug for the phone module. So I fitted the phone that sits in the arm rest. It's a lot tidier than having a bracket on the dash. It's worth looking to see if you have a loose plug behind the CD changer.
    The only thing I've found to be annoying is; You have to take off the inlet manifold to change the plugs on the rear bank of cylinders.
    For the money. The X-Type is great value.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  7 років тому +1

      They are great cars. I fixed the rattling vents with magnets - the blue disc hides a sunlight sensor that supposedly controls the aircon temp (its not connected on mine). The plugs under the manifold problem is common to a lot of cars - my mothers 1600 Fiesta just had a new set of plugs and coils - a garage job. I will look for the loom.

    Hi…came across your channel whilst searching out probs with my 2005 x type 2.5l. Very useful and strange that you are also in to guitars as I have been for 40 odd years. I know you probably won’t see this as it’s an old vid, but just wanted to give a big thanks as I found it real useful. I do concur that due to their age, they can be prone to leaking gaskets and failed sensors. I bought mine 3 yrs ago in Canterbury for £1200 smackers and whilst I’ve had to do the brakes and a few other things, it is by far the best car I have owned. Recently drove from Kent to Leeds and back again with a 10 min break. Pure comfort…and I didn’t need a chiropractor when I got home! Just replaced knock sensor which was a bit of a bummer of a job…but I learned a lot. Mainly…replace all gaskets on the inlet manifold, throttle body etc as afterwards, kept getting codes for misfire when in fact it was caused by vacuum leaks. Anyhows…just wanted to thumbs up on one of the best overviews of this gr8 car on UA-cam…and I’ve seen a few now …lolz. Top job 👍👍👍

    Good video, one thing you missed, or don't yet know about, is the internal headlight adjusters. Made of PBT plastic, they get very brittle and break over time. Replacement headlights are very expensive, so one needs to buy a repair kit, remove the bumper cover, remove the headlights, rebuild them and put it all back together!

    amazing;I thought you were describing my x type?
    I've had most of your problems including the dash top air vent cover coming loose.I removed the stud from the cover and filed the lugs on it slightly then pushed it back in until it clicked, but do it in the summer when the dash is hot as the plastic is more pliable.
    I also removed my locking wheel nuts for the same reason as you, because the Jaguar originals seize up and sometimes break when trying to remove them.Luckily,one of mine went whilst the wheels were being rotated prior to its MoT.

    I couldn't decide on the x or s type but went for the s in the end. I got a 2000 mod basic sport V6 3L manual and I know it looks tired with 190000 on the clock and isn't worth more than £400 but what fun and with a adamesh straight through pipes keeps a wide grin on all day.
    I think the early X Types were a good idea if it worked. Watch out for the dual mass flywheel failing as it's costs over £900 to get it fixed ouch. The later electric parts tend to be better quality than the pre 2002 ones.
    Watch out for rotting out sills. my man had a 2007 X TYPE last year with real bad case of it. Pull the covers off in the summer and clean and wax oil to keep good. Problem with early mods as drain plugs were either non existent or useless.

      @justivantobias 8 років тому

      I totally agree. Hazy headlights may be an MOT fail but that is something that happens on most of the cars of that age. You can also easily counter that with HID lights to meet the MOT requirement.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  8 років тому

      Not sure the HID's will overcome the requirement for having no blurring of the light emitted.
      The headlight cover must be in good repair. Anything that alters the pattern of light passing through the cover, such as cracks, holes or even scratching could cause a fail.
      The light emitted be the headlights must not be soft-edged or vague.

    I have a Blue 2002 Jaguar x type 3.0. 52000 low miles and always garage kept. No issues of any kind on my car. Everything works as it should. The body shines like new and the interior carpet & upholstery is in mint condition. The dealership said I keep my motor clean enough to eat off. I keep paper towels in the drivers side door. I wipe my shoes every time I get in. The performance is fantastic! I don't drive it fast, but the car has all the options to go fast. If you can find one of these with low miles, you will enjoy Jaguar ownership, for a reasonable purchase price. The down side is this. A brake job front and back is $1500.USD. The 100,000 mile tune up is $1200.USD Just know that before buying one.

I replaced and found that it is also leaking from what seems to be behind the water pump. My question would be Is there a housing of some sorts that the water pump attatches to..? From what I can see it seems to be leaking from somewhere behind the water pump a bit.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  6 років тому

      I am pretty sure it bolts straight onto the engine block. If its leaking then the gasket seal has failed. Buy a new gasket or make one from gasket paper and use plenty of gasket sealant like Blue Hylomar when you put it back together. Also put a bit on each bolt to act as studlock as they rattle loose and cause leaks. I had a high pitched whistle that I traced to the brake pads - the harmonic hits it at a certain speed. I drove through a tunnel with the windows open to find where the sound came from. If the sound only comes on when you let off the power it could be the prop shaft support bearing whining. Definitely get a code reader - £15 from ebay. Then look up the jag codes on the internet. Check the quality of the battery. A duff battery will play hell with everything. The 'cruise not available' light can come on for loads of reasons but it is most likely an air leak on the intake - I mention this in the video. Look at the pipes and gaskets - a small split will set off the management light. If the O2 sensor has gone they are about £80 but remember there are two. Its nearly always the one at the front below the airbox which you can change yourself if you have the extractor key.

    I own a 2002 sedan, and while I do like the car overall, it does show it's Ford lineage with problem's. Transmission and transfer case problems, electronics problem's, plastic bits problem's, suspension problem's, emissions control problem's, brake problem's, etc. Certain parts are generally inexpensive, but some are slightly hefty price wise. The car looks great, when operating good drives excellent, good power from the 3.0 litre petrol, AWD confidence, comfortable and easy to use and layed out interior. For my taste in car's, I give them a 6 out of 10 rating. It's style and 3.0 litre petrol engine and AWD, are it's strong points, however it's problematic gremlins is what keeps it from achieving higher than a 6 out of 10 imo. The way they're priced nowadays, they're not a bad choice for an affordable luxury car, but they can be temperamental, and costly for repairs if not a diyer. An ok aftermarket support for parts, does help keep them on the road, but OEM parts have quickly been drying up, at least here in the United States they have. Used parts are still around, but even their numbers are dwindling. I don't say that it's been as reliable as some other vehicles that I've owned around the same age, it's still decent reliability, and much better looking and driving vehicle compared to a lot of other choices. Not quite a throwaway and not quite a collector's car, but it's popularity has been growing, and some community support along with them.

    Can you tell me how to lock the boot? I would like to have install an aftermarket stereo but I don’t want it stolen. And those are just some of the fuses I have never seen a vehicle with so many fuses till I got this 2002 jag. The knee compartment pulls out and has fuses. Then the glove box and under the bonnet.

      The boot lock is part of the central locking and alarm system. It should lock/unlock when you push the fob button or lock when you hit 10mph as you drive away. As for the fuses - all Fords of that era have them. See this video at 1.00. ua-cam.com/video/vkVVP9cjTgM/v-deo.html

    I am in love with the X-type. My dad bought one a about 3/4 years ago and it was his pride and joy. 2.5, like yours and only 40,000 miles for £2000. Unfortunately, it’s never really been taken care of properly and it’s starting to develop some pretty serious issues. My dad passed away last year and since then, it’s been in my mums possession. Unfortunately though, her English isn’t good and she hasn’t really had an interest in cars, so she can’t really take care of the car properly herself. It’s so frustrating because I would do anything to have that car and I really want to see it restored to a decent drivable standard. The problem is, I’m only 20 years old and recently passed my driving test, so insurance companies have a few things to say about that little idea. Maybe one day I’ll own my dads car. Don’t want to think about the amount of money I’m going to have to spend on it though.

      Hello all! I figured I would update you guys that commented and all those that are going to read my comment, on what has happened to me. So, in the end, something strange happened to me. I love my dads X-type, and whilst it holds much value to me personally, I decided not to press further on getting it. Instead, I decided to do something a little bit braver and something which I know he would be cheering me on for. I bought a nice X308 instead. I did this because it’s more my style, and more appealing to me in general, and I know my dad would’ve loved that particular car just as much as he did with his X-type. My mum is still in possession of his car. While she hasn’t said this directly, I think she does want to keep it out of sentimental value. I just try to help her out and advise her where I can, so that it doesn’t fall apart or become dangerous to use in any way. I feel proud of carrying on the little tradition that my dad started with Jaguar ownership. Every day with this car is a gift, and I feel better knowing that I was brave enough to make my own decision, and find and purchase this car under my own steam. Even if the insurance is even crazier and maintenance bills are even higher than an X-type. I just followed my heart, really. Because of all of these experiences, I have found myself feeling inspired by these cars that are in my life, and have given serious thought into going back into college and enrolling onto the motor vehicle courses that are available. I’ve never known what I wanted to do with myself. For the first time though, in my life, I feel a strong urge to get on this course and make something of myself. I want to be able to work on these cars myself and make a living fixing other peoples pride and joy. I will need to give this some thought though, and figure out how to approach this in the best way possible.

    I have a 2002. There is a oval yellow light to the left above the mileage display on the dashboard that flashed a few times in the last few weeks. There is nothing about that light in my manual. Do you have any idea what it is for? Thanks.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  6 років тому

      My car is not fitted with these two lights (red and yellow) but only to cars with a 'message centre' readout - i.e one that tells you there is something wrong with the car. It is part of the trip computer readout. The drivers handbook says in Section 4.2 and 4.9 that the amber warning light is for 'secondary warnings and the driver must take action and report the fault to the dealer'. The red warning light is for primary faults and you should not drive the car and investigate immediately. If it was me I would connect the OSB and check the codes. If the light is only going on every now and then it is likely something is slowly giving up and is about to fail.

      Unfortunately it could be a lot of things. You need to find the error codes. Either use an OBD plugged in under the dash or use the built in code reader in the dash - press in the Test/Reset on the indicator stalk and turn the ignition to II - then press to find the codes.

      auryk gaza yes I can tell you! I had the same problem. I just bought a 2003 Jaguar xtype 2.5 V6 for $1000 bucks of some nice lady that thought her car had a bad transmission, which it didn’t. My Jaguar would not rev over 3000 RPM’s and my Jaguar was in limp mode. All because she didn’t diagnose the car. I had my friend diagnosis my Jaguar I paid $1000 for and my friend said it’s not the transmission... it’s actually coming up bad knock sensor... me and my friend changed the old knock sensor which was $80 bucks and now my Jaguar runs like a champ!

I did all my own maintenance on it, including the rear arb bushes, brakes and a couple of O2 sensors. It was actually quite easy to work on, although the rear pre-cat sensor was a bitch! Lol. The sills were completely clean and rust free, a spot of waxoyl will help to keep them in good order. Hope it went to a good home :-)

    I have a rough ride on my 2006 at 34,000 miles. Purchased in 2014.

      The shocks are probably good - it will be the bushes that are worn - they are 12 years old now and the rubber degrades. Also check the ARB bushes.

The thing to remember is that only the 2.5 and 3.0 are four wheel drive all the others are two wheel drive. I have been in a 2.2 and it was underpowered. I paid £2000 for my car over two years ago and I've spent about £600 on parts and repairs including new tyres and shocks.

    • @johnnysevengun

      The DSC is tied to the ABS. It is likely one of the front or rear sensors for the ABS is no longer working. A common fault is for the metal bracelets to rust away and fall off.

      If the car has been looked after and has had the correct maintenance I think they are still worth buying. The most expensive things are rust in the sills, worn suspension and dodgy electrics. Most parts are actually cheap and easy to get. I discovered Europarts not long ago so I can walk in their shop and have the part straight away.

    Severe corrosion of the inner and outer sills on both sides cost me £1350.00 for the MOT on my 11 year old X type with other steering joints too. The horror carried on at 129k miles with suspension and other joint repairs that I thought would be the end - but it came to the point of selling it with the fear of more problems ( the clutch being the worst one ). Sold it it for £500 to make a quick sale. Lost over £3000 !
    So much wanted to own the Jaguar as I've never owned one in 45 years of motoring, but it's one make that will never be considered by me. Everyone kept reminding me it wasn't jag anyway...

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  8 років тому +1

      Some are definitely better than others. I've had both sills welded but it was only £80 a side. I think they are fragile and the suspension does wear out. 129k is not bad service though for a heavy AWD car. Cornwall has some challenging conditions and roads.

    When you say “go wrong” - much of it is routine maintenance. As far as I am able, I always loosen or remove many screws, nuts & bolts, grease them and put them back. This helps enormously on many tasks at a later stage. An amount of Vaseline on chrome parts and water ingress points. (Cars in Bermuda fail MOT, required every 6 months, if they have rust on them - surrounded by salt water it’s difficult to avoid too, except with Vaseline which helps a great deal!). Silicone spray (Lidl £1.99) is very useful to stop those annoying squeaks. Lovely cars. I have the XJ6 Executive (2006) Petrol Model. Still a beautiful ride, but starting to cost money now. Latest maintenance was rear suspension arms & bushes, front discs & pads, reversing sensor (1 = £50) and it came to £1300. With £500 a year Road Tax and total expenditure exceeding £3000 a year, its an expensive luxury! But luxury it is and, when all said & done, its a beautiful looker, safe and slow cruising. Cheers.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  6 років тому +2

      You are so right. But when the cars get old (well past their warranties) the rubber components start to fail in the suspension and the plastics on the electrical circuits and sensors break up. All the gearbox oils MUST be changed at 60,000 miles or they will fail. The real killer however is rust. The plastic sills ensure the steel ones turn into collanders.

      As far as I know ONLY the 2.5 and 3.0 V6 petrol versions have 4WD. There is a 2.1 (badged 2.0) V6 petrol that is 2WD. However it is only 157/165bhp so a bit a sluggish and thirsty against other 2.0 cars (so the reviews say). Personally I don't think its worth having an X Type without AWD and if the gearboxes are oil changed there should be no problems. Perhaps other people know more about it.

    Notes from Spac8 - don't be put off. the early '04 cars are the worst, the later ones don't rust and are much more reliable. my friends '05 3.0 has been with him for 185,000 miles (total, 208,500) and the only things it has ever had is a new clutch and one injector caused by a batch of bad fuel. my uncle had one new in '06 and sold it this year, 100,000 miles and the only thing that ever went on that was the rear roll out cover for the boot (estate). also, if you get an auto v6, you have no cambelt and no clutch to worry about! on the lookout for a '05-'07 diesel see myself for my next car. the diesel engines are also the Ford engine and totally bulletproof, don't know where you got the idea that the Mondeo is unreliable, far from it!

    • @chrwl007
      @chrwl007 6 років тому

      The diesel engines also have chain-driven camshafts, so no worries there :) If you're still looking for a diesel, get the 2.2 - the 6th gear really makes a difference.
