I've never been here, but I've been by here a few times in an 18-wheeler! This landmark is a railfans dream! This is the ultimate location to watch the same train for several minutes, turning every angle under the sun! I envy you guys that live near here!
I was born and raised in Tehachapi, CA and visited the loop many times. They use to have a Best Western Mountain Inn coffee shop and they had in the back, an HO scale model of the Tehachapi Loop. As a kid, I loved to put a quarter in and watch the train.
I was just up there last week the whole trip from Bakersfield to Tehachapi is amazing just watching the train from the freeway looks like a giant snake on tracks
Lived in tehachapi California for several years back in the 90s hope you went inside the restaurant in town that has this railroad train set inside it.
@@gladtv7873 there's a restaurant inside the town of tehachapi that has the layout of the tehachapi loop can't remember the name of the restaurant but for .50 to a dollar you could make the train run . It was very interesting.
Mind boggling video. Indian Railways has no such type of network. USA freight line constitute about 80%. It is the no.1 railway in the world. Loco horn also frightening and rocking music.
I’m here spooled up deep. About 43,617 horsepower and full inter axel wheel lock deployment and sand spreader on the ready. Bout 850,437 tractive drive to dah rail. Let’s go with throttle up. Notch seven please. 1,648 cars long. 44.675 million pounds in weight. Puuuull. Chief engineer 36 years of service
The Tehachapi Loop is a 0.73 miles (1.17 km) long spiral, or helix, on the Union Pacific Railroad Mojave Subdivision through Tehachapi Pass, of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, south-central California. The line connects Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in the Mojave Desert. Rising at a steady two percent grade, the track gains 77 feet (23 m) in elevation in the Loop.[1] Any train more than 4,000 feet (1,200 m) long passes over itself going around the loop. At the bottom of the loop, the track passes through Tunnel 9, the ninth tunnel built as the railroad worked from Bakersfield. The line averages approximately 40 trains each day.[citation needed] Due to its frequent trains and scenic setting, the Tehachapi Loop is popular with railfans.[citation needed] In 1998 it was named a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and is designated as California Historical
No railroad in the history of the world has EVER had "extra" money. Loops like this were built to SAVE money and avoid building very expensive tunnels. That isn't a tunnel in the video, it's just an over-crossing.

@@truenorth3077 What happened to the Inn?
@@4seeableTV I guess it got torn down along with the old bowling alley and they expanded the newer Best Western Hotel. Sad, lots of good memories.
@@truenorth3077 That's unfortunate.

The magic is not only the force of the engines but the humans brain witch design according to Mathematics the loop...the curves and declines etc...

what is the purpose of this loop??
To stretch out the hill, decreasing the grade
@@Texassince1836 To catch train Hoppers...
It may be useful for that, but the loop makes the grade a manageable 2.2%
