    Thank you! Joy! Have you ever heard of a violin rosin called Suone? It's from 1915 Era. IT was recommended by Wallace Richey a violin teacher. Supposedly the waxed rosin is less dusty and the tone is less harsh. He also recommended acribell violin strings which he claimed are better than #2 grade gut strings. Thank you for the lesson!😅

    Superb. Thanks for showing it from different angles too so we can see the picky and thumb joints bending. I think I'm the right track, but it needs alot more work it. I will do this everyday.

    Dear Joy,
    thank you so much for this nice video! It is very helpful not only to show a movement, but also to explain how it should feel.
    However, I assume that flexibility is only one part of the magic? I have a relatively flexible right hand, but I can not play fast. I have a very bad timing between left and right hand. It's no problem to play the same note very fast over and over again, but when the note has to change between each stroke, I find it very hard to put the left finger down and then move the bow, to get a nice sound. I'm pretty fast with right hand only or left hand only, but both together - disaster :-)
    I also have some problem with using too much flexibility, as I'm losing bow control then, and timing becomes even worse. So, if you have flexibility, despite of this you have to know at every moment where your bow is with which momentum, to give it the right direction at the right moment. And as it's very difficult to be flexible on one side and bring some weight on the bow on the oher side, maybe one has also to use the momentum instead of "pressing", and this is also quite challenging. Or, if you want to make a clear start of the note, it needs a little tension and then immediate relaxing, which is also very hard to achieve.
    Maybe it's a little the same with vibrato: the finger has to be very flexible, but still has press the string down, and when pressed down not sliding back and forth on the string! Very hard to achieve.
    Btw. bad timing is what I'm struggling most with at the moment - cannot play fast, and the beginning of a new note is not 100% clear...
    Have a nice day!

      Dear Johannes, bad timing ( poor coordination) is a common issue that all violinist have to work hard on. I'll try to make a video about it. Happy music making!

    Thanks for the exercises! I like to use a frisbee & basketball to help students get the feel of what I call the “flick.” Since most students are familiar with those, they usually get the feel a little quicker in their wrist, but getting them to practice it has been a challenge. I’ll try these exercises with some students and see how it works. Thanks, Joy!

    I will practice this exercise 5 mins per day! Thank you much. My question is that in which cases the initiation of the bow movement would come from fingers?

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  4 роки тому

      the colle strokes are made from active finger joint movement as well as being initiated by finger joints. Happy violin playing!

    Thank you for this video. I have been working on Mozart Violin Concerto No. 3. Around measure 68 after the rest, it starts on an A, I’ve been having trouble with that spicatto or brush stroke movement. I can’t seem to control the bounce near the end of the bow... the bow doesn’t bounce in the same place and it makes a scratchy sound. Any tips on making this sound light and clear? Thank you!
