    I've been watching you and even though i'm not a student anymore i love all the content and the big effort you put into it. May i ask what Mic u using and also what camera? Keep up the great work!

      Thanks! For this video we used a DJI Osmo and a $16 lav mic - I think it's the Royal Voice one. We recorded the audio on my old iPhone 5 using the Rode Rec app.
      For the videos I shoot in my room, I use a Canon 70D and a Rode NTG4+.

    your channel content is one of the most amazing channels on youtube. i loved the way you filmed this video it seems very fitting maybe it wouldnt have been as good if it was a different video but this one suits the outdoor enviroment.
    keep up the useful content 👍

    I think the tips were good and seeing the campus was also pretty nice, but I like your usual setup better. The movement was distracting. Also was there a different camera? I don't know how to explain it but it was too smooth or something? everything was way too fast!

    Hey all! So this is the first time I've ever tried to make a video like this, which means it's a bit of an experiment. First time ever filming scripted lines in public and in multiple locations, first time ever using a lav mic... so it was definitely a learning experience. What do you guys think?

    • @buzzybeejones9028
      @buzzybeejones9028 8 років тому +21

      Sound quality and visual quality was great! The content of the video was too notch as usual. Would probably request that's most shots of you should be closer up like in idea 2, as opposed to further away like in idea 1. Maybe if possible, film in a way that we can see your face more clearly? But I enjoyed the video nevertheless and the topic could not have come at a better time :)

      I loved this new style! Watching a video filmed outside or in separate locations is more entertaining/intriguing to watch. The constantly changing scenery and content makes for more dynamic videos. This makes me more invested in the video, leaves me curios as to what's next, and causes me to watch the video longer. Plus all of this didn't degrade the production quality of the video (it enhanced it). Oh, and those were some sexy ass shoes!

    Hey Thomas!
    Pro's of the video experiment:
    - Change of evironment.
    - Makes you look professional.
    - It makes it more interesting to watch.
    - Very cool.
    Con's of the video experiment:
    - Camera moving constantly.
    - Walking arround makes it a little bit awkward.
    - Your body language isn't as confident as in other videos.
    Tips(?):
    - Maybe keep that outdoors background but try to explain the content of the video while remaining still. That way you might find it easier to focus on moving your hands and body more efficiently and forget about where you put your feet.
    It's my opinion though =]
    These tips about being more productive during summer WILL come in handy.
    Thank you!

    • @Candy4Bullets
      @Candy4Bullets 8 років тому +9

      I agree with the body movements. His confidence should boost after this ;) also the camera movements were fine but at certain points it would move too much when he did, it should be ONLY move when he's walking, not swaying. Otherwise it looks weird. A good camera man really makes a difference. Practice is what his friend needs :)

  • @TechByMattB
    @TechByMattB 8 років тому +23

    I feel like if you are going to be walking with the camera it should be at a normal walking pace. The speed you were going just made it awkward. The content of the video was great, but the movements were awkward and could definitely be improved. The verge does videos like this where the person is walking and it seems more natural so maybe look at one of those videos and go at that pace. IDK either way nice video and I look forward to more of your videos in this format.

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  8 років тому +4

      Yeah I felt that most of the walking takes, except for the one about internships, were too slow. I'll be trying to improve that (and the hand motions) the next time I do something like this :)

    • @Sapos93
      @Sapos93 8 років тому +1

      Yea, the internship part movement was pretty cool and natural. On the whole, I can absolutely relate to your content. It reassured me in my path. I'm doing international medical internship in August and got involved in some serious projects. Thanks for your prior pieces of advice as they have helped me a lot. Greetings from Poland.

  • @TMMx
    @TMMx 8 років тому +41

    The sound is fantastic. Whatever stabilizer you used looks great, albeit it was a bit overused. If you are trying to increase the production value of your videos, you should also get a diffusion screen and a reflector to even out the lighting, especially if you're filming outside. These are pretty easy to cheaply DIY.

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  8 років тому +4

      I REALLY wished I had a reflector when we were out shooting - I had to heavily color correct some of the shots due to the position of the sun. I just found out the other day that I can get a little LED fill light for the OSMO, so I'll probably pick that up and see how it works out.

  • @LuigiSquid
    @LuigiSquid 8 років тому +96

    I like the concept of filming outside, but the camera constantly moving away from you makes me feel like I am uncomfortable (which I am not, I love your videos) and want to leave, but you keep following me. You know when you are in a hurry and late for an appointment, but the person keeps talking while you try to go away? We want to get closer, not escape! Except from that, awesome video and as always, great content! ヽ(‘ ∇‘ )ノ
    PS: By the way, talking of nunchucks skills, have you seen Bruce Lee playing ping pong?

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  8 років тому +10

      Huh, I'd never thought of it that way! How about the internship section that starts from a side angle? Personally, that's my favorite take (it's also the last one we did, so I had more practice and figured out walking faster looks more natural).
      I'll have to check out that Bruce Lee vid :)

    • @LuigiSquid
      @LuigiSquid 8 років тому +8

      You're right, there is definitely a difference and it works a lot better! Also, there is a moment on 2:21 when you are walking by the side of the cam, and I think that works great and make us feel like we're taking a walk together! :)

    WHY YOU HAVEN'T MADE THIS VIDEO EARLIER!1!!!!!!

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  8 років тому +6

      Haha yeah I probably should have made this in early June. The main reason is that I didn't start getting requests for it until mid-summer, and then it just took a while to make. I ended up scrapping two different versions of the script before going with this one - this video was a bit of a hard one to write because the topic is so broad.

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  8 років тому +4

      Haha yup - especially in July. We had to wait for people to walk out of the frame a few times, but overall it was a pretty easy shoot in that respect. Plus, everyone who was on campus was too busy playing Pokemon Go to even notice us :P

    As a college student, these tips were really helpful! I actually happen to be trying to work on some of my own projects over this summer but I thought I would hit the same problem of having too much unconstrained time so I'm doing a part time job as well for 20hrs/week.
    That seems to have helped give me more structure to my days but I slightly underestimated how much time I was giving over to the job. So for anyone considering the idea, I would suggest not to let the side activity take too much more than 10-15 hours/ week because then you may find it difficult to conjure enough time and energy to be productive with your actual project.

    So, This is gonna sound a bit pessimistic but I assure you it's 100%, All you've said in this video, Doesn't apply to me. We're not given any opportunities by our colleges, we don't have a career center, we don't have internships except for a few, which I don't have access to, and that are not really that interesting. But still want to have a productive summer (or what's left of it at least) but how ? keeping in mind I live in what you call "a third world country"
    Thank you and keep making videos ! :)

      Dopey Weedey Hi! I also live in a Third World Country or "Developving World", i'm a medical student, what i do is:
      -Ask the doctors to join them on daily basis.
      -Ask to lab teachers to join and help them.
      -Go to E.R. and learn.
      -Teach subjects and topics in wich i suck.
      I don't know if it help you, but i hope it will.

    Interesting thought: I actually stumbled upon your college info geek website about half a year ago, read a few articles and told myself, wow this would have been so useful if only I found it earlier. I saved the link and told myself I'd look into it again eventually.
    Punchline: as I'm watching this video, before you mention the personal project mistake, I'm like "hey I think I'll go revisit his website, it was very useful". Thank you for devoting so much time and energy to sharing your knowledge.

      Sorry about that! I really do feel bad about not posting for so long - honestly I had a hard time with this video. As always, you're the only one who tells it to me straight, no matter how many other similar topic channels or articles I may look up. Since I've watched your previous videos, I trust your judgement, but I feel this video's format feels less personal due to its nature, cause when it's just you and the camera in a room, I feel like you instigate a sense of "make good decisions" directly to me as a person. The conviction seeps through the screen without a sense of pretense. Just feedback :)

    Hey there Thomas, love your videos. very informative and insightful on how to approach things in life. I have a question, is it possible to call yourself a spiritual person even though you are not tied to any religion?

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  8 років тому +1

      Glad you like them! I think you'll get lots of answers on this, but personally, I'd say that if you believe in a dualistic universe and that we have a connection to the metaphysical side, or that it holds some meaning or influence over our lives, then you're a spiritual person. That kind of belief can take many, many forms - only some of which are shared and agreed upon by enough people to become organized religions.

    Still working on the whole productivity/time wasting thing during the summer (your videos help so much) but one of the things that worked so well for me unintentionally was getting a volunteer position with the university I was attending in the summer before my first year. Not only was I comfortable with campus months before starting uni but I gained some incredible contacts that I can access if I need help or advice

    These tips and videos are awesome man, keep up the inspiration. The only few constructive criticisms i have (hopefully not annoying you in any way): lighting (see other comments) and a little stiff hand gestures (on the table they looked natural... while you walked they stayed the same looking uncomfortable). If you are using some bodylanguage tips i wouldn't focus on the gestures that much. E.g. hands in the pockets/scratching (for me atleast) are super natural. While people would disagree with me i thing that these random hand movements show more natural character than precisely positioned stay-the-same open inviting hands. This creeps me out somehow tbh. Anyway... i talk too much. Keep up the nice work! :)

    Hey Thomas, been following you for over a year, watched pretty much every vid. This is a really cool change, it's nice when you have these walking videos. Just a few notes to improve, don't switch the scene so often, it's nice if you had like four 2-minute sections and also, the camera shot needs to be changed. I think the lens you are using isn't right for the shot you are trying to capture. Hope this helps buddy and keep at it!

    Definitely go abroad. I went on a school trip to Malawi to do project work at an orphanage this summer. It is 100% the best thing I ever decided to do. I go so much out of it and learned a lot of new skills. Fully recommend going abroad it you have the opportunity.

    I liked that you tried changing things up a bit, and I definitely like the idea of filming your video in a location that relates to your topic (if there is one)! My only advice for this type of format would be maybe to not walk while you have text on the screen. It would be a little difficult to focus on reading while the camera behind the text was moving.

    What I've been doing is keeping a spreadsheet of my productivity, I do a thing and keep a stopwatch going of doing that thing. I've managed to get up to 7 hours productivity time on non-intern days and 10 hours of intern days. Not much, but it's better than playing games all day :)

    I see a lot of people commenting on how it is a bit late..not sure if they are referring to how summer is almost over or that they are already out of school and no longer have summer because they have jobs. Even though it is almost the end of the summer, this is a great video. I think it can apply to any break you have, whether you're still in school or not. Thanks for creating this!

    Hi Thomas, been following you since you only had like 5000 subscribers and were mainly blogging (and I was still in university lol)! Love that your following has exploded. Seeing this video filmed on campus made me smile. It made me realize that after all these years, you are still exploring new things and trying to make your content better every day. While the outside walking shots sometimes felt a little off, some tweaking will easily do the trick and I'm sure you have learned a ton by doing this. Keep it up man, you truly are an inspiration! Greetings from Belgium! Oh, and shoe game on point in this video!

    I wish I had of know about those websites when I was in college. I went for summer classes so I could graduate and move on. It was hectic and if I had it to do again I think at least for me I would do it the same. My college experience wasn't good I think if I took the summer off I wouldn't of gone back for fall term.

    we had a 4 month summer break because of the curriculum shift in our country and I took a summer job at a honey bee farm. it was not related to my course but I learned a lot of new things outside my comfort zone ☺ I can say it's more productive than watching kdramas the whole break. 😀

    Hey Tom, really loved this new approach! I think you should use this once in a while... especially when you're talking about outdoor activities, like fitness, sports, etc. It was cool to see that you are experimenting and trying to evolve. All the best!

    I'm actually amazed. You can probably do skits in your videos for entertainment and real life examples. Great Job! Also I'm an international and thinking to come to Iowa state university for Computer Science major. I noticed that you are at the same university. Would you recommended it to me?

    What do you think about learn sleeping? I'm trying to learn English at home without classes, and for that I spend most of my free time watching youtube videos in English. I sleep with headphones listening audios. This can improve my studies?? Thank you!
