I mean it deals insanely good damage... but only against undead. Like you can easily bully any death(rite) birds and tibia mariners with the spell. Also really good in skeleton dungeons.

Discus of Light is honestly not even that bad and it's extremely FP efficient. In fact, it is the most FP efficient spell in the game. Definitely saved early game part of the run. P.S. Any plans on also trying "Can you beat Elden Ring with the "WORST" Ashes do War?".
It also probably has one of the best range among spells, aside from Frenzied Burst. The discus is stopped when it hits an object, but it can go through multiple enemies, and has a returning sequence that has damage as well. And while the start up is not the fastest, you can chain it with decent speed (and if you're able to land both hits, the damage can be pretty impressive for a 3FP holy spell). While it definitely doesn't have high DPS, it more than makes up for it as a really solid utility spell, from sneaking in a disc or two while the boss is far away, mowing down huge crowds while my summon is distracting them, or just sniping enemies from a distance.
Discus was crazy good when I needed it to be! Also yes I am planning to do worst ashes of war but it's not likely to be a video anytime soon since I already have like 6 videos backlogged
Scarlet Aeonia has the strongest form of rot in the game, period. Only problem is the reduced effect time, causing the damage to be comparable to other forms. Additionally, Pest threads is only bad on small targets. The bigger the enemy, the more times it multi hits, it’s kind of busted
"Scarlet Aeonia has the strongest form of rot in the game" This is simply not true -- all the incantations provide the same effect of Scarlet Rot: (HP* 0.0033) + 13 for 90s, be it Aeonia, Ekzykes, or Rotten Breath. There are two types of Scarlet Rot players can inflict: (HP* 0.0033) + 13, -- OR -- (HP* 0.0018) + 15. The latter (the weaker rot) is for melee weapons, arrows and rot grease. The former (stronger rot) is for everything else, including Rot Pots. The single STRONGEST form of Scarlet Rot in the game is incidentally inflicted by the Rotten Stray spirit summon: It's the stronger formula, but instead of 90s, it lasts 180s.
Pest threads is generally regarded as one of the best spells in the game by anyone who isnt a game journalist, but aeonia is kinda bad. It gives the same rot as rot breath, but it leaves you super open. It’s only good for bosses that stay still if you can’t use 2 rot breaths in a row. Basically, it’s better at inflicting rot until bosses start moving as they do in the mid-late game.
@@Leg1503 Personally I prefer Scarlet Aeonia to Ekzykes's Decay. In close range, they both leave you open, Decay more so and with no poise. Additionally, Aeonia consumes 48 FP while Decay consumes 288 FP.
When I saw that the bloodflame spells, frenzy spells, and pest threads were in the list I was all 'wot' but then I remembered that threads is niche against large bosses and frenzy is niche against players, the bloodflame spells I'm still confused about though.
I think the low placement of bloodflame talons in tier lists is because of its range even though some of the best incantations are short ranged. Reminder that the purpose of the video is to put a spotlight on spells that might have a more negative reputation or just deserve more recognition!
Talons has MAD DPS if you're willing to put yourself on death's doorstep for it. Would be nice if the explosion covered the entire arc you slice even if it's not given extra range...
One thing to note for early game: Due to scaling and harsh damage negation from enemy resistances, many of the low-damage multi-hit spells will seem pitifully weak at first. They start to overcome these issues with more investment though, so a lot of early game multi-hit spells will only start doing good damage towards the end of the game. (Dunno about surge flame tho)
Yeah, its a shame really since the multi hit spells are the early game ones normally. Also surge picked up at like the last couple bosses but everything before that was pitifully bad
Discus of light is easily my favorite spell as a cooperator. Long Range, low cost, and decent holy damage that can hit twice per shot. Almost makes Ancestral Spirit Horn charm useful.
Probably the most fun I have in ER is to throw a discus of light and then roll/run to the side and make the returning discus kill a different enemy. The range is solid and the ability to hit multiple enemies makes it even more efficient. I'm surprised its on lists as a bad spell, it fills the role of pebble for me in an incantation.
Pretty sure that works with all spells and such that do damage, It's not physical damage only. On the other hand, since pest threads is pure physical (along with bestial incantations) it should work with blue dancer charm. That'd be an insane damage increase if naked and using a weightless seal.

This video really highlights what I love about Elden Ring's magic system. My first full playthrough of Elden Ring was a Sorcery playthrough, but I was almost entirely using the basic bitch glintstone sorceries, with a little bit of rock sling for poise breaking and later on comet azur for, well, comet azur-ing. But I've been doing another Sorcery playthrough, and actually exploring the different types of sorceries, like the Carian Glintblades, more of the Gravity Sorceries, and instead of just "spam magic til it dies", I have the perfect spell for every situation, and they're all incredibly fun to use. My favourites have become Meteorite on large enemies after a poise break with Rock Sling, and Loretta's Greatbow for sniping low-health enemies from a mile away without even having to fight, they're so satisfying.
Magic is so much fun in this game and I love how the open world and the verticality of the legacy dungeons allows you to try so many different things. Getting to a high place, cast Terra Magica and snipe enemies from a long distance with Loretta's greatbow is one of the funniest things I've done in these games. I think that trying to be extremely efficient and caring only about the dps takes away most of the fun of the game.
Unendurable frenzy is one of my new favourite spells after doing a madness playthrough, I also think bloodflame talons is definitely underrated, it’s a great follow up/get the fuck away from me spell for bleed builds.
Bro Discus of Light being on this list is an actual crime. I'm glad Diji seems to like it too. That spell isn't just good, it's straight up one of the best Incantations in the game. If you pair this with Holy Tear, Holy Scorpion, Radiant Gold Mask, and the Golden Order Seal on a dedicated Int/Faith build, it does incredible DPS for like no FP. Not to mention it's a very reliable source of ranged Holy damage, making it amazing for Deathbirds. The projectile also flies quite fast, goes very far, and can hit TWICE. Triple Rings of Light does better DPS, sure, but it has no where near the same range or FP efficiency. It actually did used to be fairly bad when Elden Ring first released. But From Software buffed the ever living shit out of both Discus, and Triple Rings. Triple Rings I would argue is good to the point where it's a little cancerous in PvP.
My brother likes to make extremely cancerous meta builds and one of them was basically that. He used the general perception in the community that says "holy damage bad" to his advantage. People would see him use holy damage, lower their guard, and then he would annihilate them
Unendurable Frenzy is also extremely good in PvP too. If you get a knockdown with something like Gavel of Haima, or Wrath of Gold, and you immediately cast Unendurable on them, it's pretty much GG if they aren't light rolling.

I think discus of light is a great incantation. If you use the Golden order seal especially it’s great. Cheap to use, great range, has a recoil attack, and casts semi quickly.
Surge's predecessor Fire Surge was one of my staple spells on my Pyromancer in duels for DS3, not for the damage, but to finish players off. I admit that my spell setup was unoriginal as hell (Black Flame, Chaos Bed Vestiges, Fire Surge and Black Serpent (good for forcing rolls)) on top of the Onyx Blade or Astora Greatsword, but it was decently effective. I remember trying Fire Whip (Whirl O Flame!'s predecessor) and ran into a Duel that I would have won if I had Fire Surge instead but lost because I didn't. That's kind of how I feel about Surge O Flame! as well, a finisher spell on that last sliver of HP, while I've used Bestial Sling instead for that (on my most recent playthrough a decent number of bosses had "magic pixel" HP moments), that's mostly because I haven't used that spell too much and I made quite a lot of use of Fire Surge in DS3.
love this, i spec'd hard into faith in my first playthrough specifically because there were so many unique incantations, and i had a lot of fun trying most of the incantations in the game out
Placidusax ruin is THE incant for godfrey. Get some distance when he starts roaring, the air time will completely avoid his shockwave stomps. Pair with black flame ritual for when he rushes you.
Discus of light is nuts. It carried my holy build for 70% of the game and I was hitting pretty good numbers with it. Course comet or giants flame will still do more, BUT most of the bosses are resistant to holy so that's a win imo for discus
I think Discus gets its rap from Holy's rap TBH, more than any real complaint about it. Probably doesn't help that there's that similar miracle in DS3 that has a bad rap.
That's probably the case. The spells themselves are decent but From Software just shafted the damage type by giving too much absorption to many of the bosses. Especially late game
i did a goddess of magic build a while back, 80 int+faith with 40 arcane and mind. i was super squishy but i was using a lot of spells usually never used (plus after getting the prince of death staff and golden order seal i was hitting like a damn truck with everything anyway) and it’s interesting how spells can work together. plus doing it this way means i had all the buffs in the world, debuffs galore with the dragon breaths and good ol “blow shit up” sorceries. there is something amazing about buffing with an incantation, shooting a dark moon then hitting them with glintstone breath.
Funfact: Gowry isn't a bug wearing a human disguise. He's puppeting the bugs to talk in his place. That's why killing "him." reveals the bug but if you go back he just shows up again.
To make discus of light better, combine it with the tree sentinel shield or whichever one it is that defects spells. Do the ability and you can send back the discus that you fired.
Recently beat elden ring with an int faith build made by Nizar GG, and the discus of light is part of the build. With first impressions the incantation can seem borderline useless but as I played with it I came to love the cheap efficiency of it. Even through the end of the run I was spamming DoL at Melainia just because of how good it feels to use
It's pretty satisfying to use the spell since you also have to manage the return path of the disc, so it's not as mindless as firing a projectile without any thought or strategy
I used Scarlet Aeonia with my dex/faith build first time i ever played the game through, it’s a super solid if situational incant and i still prefer it over rot breath tbh
I’m a little sad that the spells that are super conditional or just bad are usually faith based. In a game entirely about where your faith lies, it’s weird that all the “good” spells are just nerd school spells and faith takes a back seat.
Pest Threads allowed me to kill Elden Beast before it got off Elden Stars, the fact that people think it's bad is honestly baffling. Not to mention it does physical damage, which means you can buff it with Grant me Strength. That is so much extra damage and you don't even have to do any strange leveling because it's all faith
I did an arcane faith build that used a lot of dragon incantations, along with some frenzy flame stuff. Pest threads was my go to spell for bosses. Doesnt do a lot of damage but its likely to do at least some damage and its fairly cheap and quick to cast. Hitting a boss with low physical resistance with all the threads actually does solid damage. looking at you, elden beast.
The webbing shot on 3 shot giant bosses as it hits 24 times on elden beast and 13 times on fire giant web shot is broken me and 1 guy shot our web shots and stun lock the elden beast
Discus of light is so good, I used it from first reaching Altus all the way till I got triple rings at end game. And it’s only 3 fp I can’t believe people think it’s bad
Whirl, O Flame has a shockingly good range; I think they learned from previous versions being too short range to use and just hit the "bonus range" button on it. Litany of Proper Death is a niche anti-undead spell that does chip damage against anything else. Something to swap in for some of the catacombs/grave areas, but otherwise useless, especially with its high FP cost and long cast animation. Discus of Light seems to have gotten supercharged by the 1.07 balance changes, with basically everything about it being improved (except damage). Bloodflame Talons does shockingly good damage (and has decent bleed buildup), plus the poise damage isn't bad either. It also combos into all sorts of other incantations like Carain Slicer does with sorceries. Pest Threads are great against larger bosses, since each individual thread can hit multiple times per cast. However, the FP cost is quite high and it loses effectiveness against more agile enemies. Elden Stars does chip damage while claiming to have good poise damage, but I think there are much better uses for both two memory slots and 40 FP. It's funny that the Elden Beast version is practically identical in its worthlessness. Unendurable Frenzy having a "combo finisher" aspect once your FP bar drains means that it actually does extreme levels of damage, though you still burn through your entire FP bar to do so and any Madness proc will immediately end the spell. Bloodboon is best used against groups, and even then it's somewhat underwhelming. I think if they made the "burning ground" effect last a bit longer it might be more viable, but right now it mainly acts as an anti-dodge shotgun. Scarlet Aeonia, while taking up 3 memory slots and being used mainly just to apply rot, DOES apply a stronger version of rot while also inflicting some moderate damage to nearby enemies. It's probably stronger than the Rot Breath incantations, at the cost of coming so far into the game that there's hardly anyone left to use it on (until NG+, anyway). Inescapable Frenzy used to have an insane glitch where having a weapon equipped while two-handing a seal added the weapon's damage to the attack, resulting in massive damage numbers. Now it's only slightly less broken, in that you have to chain-cast it to kill enemies instead of one-shotting them (oh the horror). Also practically unusable in PvE aside from killing the scant few NPCs around (Gideon makes a great test dummy for it). Surge, O Flame seems to be most effective once a billion buffs have been stacked onto it, making it far more viable temporarily.
Recently did my first faith build run and man I am disappointed at how terrible most of these incantations are, and some of them even wants you to invest in intelligence as well.
I know that litany of proper death is meant to be used against those who live in death, but... *wow.* That is maybe the worst spell in any fromsoft game.
That's because so many people in the community just judge weapons for their PvP potential, and look down on it's PvE potential. (Usually the stupid argument of, "well it's PvE so aything can work") When PvP is more of a Niche mode that's irrelevant for the vast majority of the players
I can agree on most of the spells on the list, but discus of light is insanely good even against enemies that resist holy damage. 3 fp and low stamina cost make it incredibly efficient, not to mention it usually hits twice thanks to its instant double hit when continuously overlapping with an enemy hitbox. I have a int/fth build that uses that spell as its main dps spell, and holy shit it does almost 800 damage against enemies with a 40% holy resist using a maxxed out golden order seal, golden mask, and 50/50 casting stats. That tiny disc just shreds anything that doesn't register projectiles, and even then you might still get a hit in thanks to the disc returning to you.
Pest threads among the WORST Incantations? HERESY! Still great to see it get love. Super slept on man. It’s nutty against big things. There’s definitely some finesse in knowing where to position to absolutely break the spell though. I do wish I were better against smaller targets though.

I think discus of light is a great incantation. If you use the Golden order seal especially it’s great. Cheap to use, great range, has a recoil attack, and casts semi quickly.
Very reliable after the buff in one of the recent patches. Quite fun to use too!
That's kind of how I feel about Surge O Flame! as well, a finisher spell on that last sliver of HP, while I've used Bestial Sling instead for that (on my most recent playthrough a decent number of bosses had "magic pixel" HP moments), that's mostly because I haven't used that spell too much and I made quite a lot of use of Fire Surge in DS3.
love this, i spec'd hard into faith in my first playthrough specifically because there were so many unique incantations, and i had a lot of fun trying most of the incantations in the game out
Litany has one job and one job only, finishing off several skeletons at once. That's it. It's useless otherwise.
It’s also meh at getting death birds
Placidusax ruin is THE incant for godfrey. Get some distance when he starts roaring, the air time will completely avoid his shockwave stomps. Pair with black flame ritual for when he rushes you.
Always good to see a new, sprouting content creator. I can already see your channel doing wonders in the future! Great work man ❤
Thank you! that's incredibly kind!
Blood talons is like any weapon with bloodloss, its also kinda fun to use
Discus of light is nuts. It carried my holy build for 70% of the game and I was hitting pretty good numbers with it. Course comet or giants flame will still do more, BUT most of the bosses are resistant to holy so that's a win imo for discus
bloodboon has actually saved me lots of times in pve and pvp, grants a lot of space.
In tight hallways, the shit is devastating. It’s a good area denial incant.
Discus of Light slaps. I used that in my golden order theme run, int/fai focused, and it's honestly so useful because of how cheap it is
I think Discus gets its rap from Holy's rap TBH, more than any real complaint about it. Probably doesn't help that there's that similar miracle in DS3 that has a bad rap.
That's probably the case. The spells themselves are decent but From Software just shafted the damage type by giving too much absorption to many of the bosses. Especially late game
@@BigDiji I’m hoping the DLC bosses aren’t all just holy resistant too. Would be nice to be able to make better use of Holy weapons and spells
I hate Discus for making you look gay while casting it.
i did a goddess of magic build a while back, 80 int+faith with 40 arcane and mind. i was super squishy but i was using a lot of spells usually never used (plus after getting the prince of death staff and golden order seal i was hitting like a damn truck with everything anyway) and it’s interesting how spells can work together. plus doing it this way means i had all the buffs in the world, debuffs galore with the dragon breaths and good ol “blow shit up” sorceries.
there is something amazing about buffing with an incantation, shooting a dark moon then hitting them with glintstone breath.
Funfact: Gowry isn't a bug wearing a human disguise. He's puppeting the bugs to talk in his place. That's why killing "him." reveals the bug but if you go back he just shows up again.
It's also why you can only get drops out of him if you kill him after the end of the quest.
I love Scarlet Aeonia, I use it all the time
That 9 damage on godrick damn near brought me to tear with laughter
To make discus of light better, combine it with the tree sentinel shield or whichever one it is that defects spells. Do the ability and you can send back the discus that you fired.
I've had a lot of people suggest this to me. Almost makes me wanna try a whole run with spells that synergize with shields!
i did a frenzy flame build and unendurable frenzy was incredible especially against malenia
I think I prefer it over rot breath too at this point! It doesn't have the arc requirement, and it applies rot instantly too!
3:17 what a moment, and the weirdest part is the fact that the game consumed your stamina for the dodge just before you got hit
I didn't even notice that in editing! I guess it must've been during the like 2 frames of startup before the s kicked in.
I’m a little sad that the spells that are super conditional or just bad are usually faith based. In a game entirely about where your faith lies, it’s weird that all the “good” spells are just nerd school spells and faith takes a back seat.
the " 9 dmg" on Godrick were hilarious
Pest Threads allowed me to kill Elden Beast before it got off Elden Stars, the fact that people think it's bad is honestly baffling. Not to mention it does physical damage, which means you can buff it with Grant me Strength. That is so much extra damage and you don't even have to do any strange leveling because it's all faith
Exactly! In my opinion, I think pest threads is one of the best incantations!
Pest threads is physical damage so the damage was reduced by that head, but it’s still blasting
Radagon: i fear no comet azurs, but that surge o flame, it scares me
What I learned from this is that I need to get discuss of light
It's gotten a lot better since release!
Same. Been putting off NG+ for ages but this is the tip-off telling me I have to do it.
Who on earth thought pest threads was bad? It's the large boss demolisher
Good against mid-sized bosses too! Nearly one phased Mohg!
Speaking as someone who just finished off a Blue Dancer Charm build, Beast Claw and Pest Threads are both *amazing*!
Why do always the coolest bosses have the worst spells for the player?
From Software doesn't want the player to be too rewarded for finally beating them
The webbing shot on 3 shot giant bosses as it hits 24 times on elden beast and 13 times on fire giant
web shot is broken me and 1 guy shot our web shots and stun lock the elden beast
Discus of light is so good, I used it from first reaching Altus all the way till I got triple rings at end game. And it’s only 3 fp I can’t believe people think it’s bad
nah your just overleveled
Read this on a nerd voice: "Oh but it's holy damage, the worst element in the game"
I absolutely loved the ‘bad’ sorceries video so looking forward to this one lol
Thank you! I hope you enjoyed it!
Surge o flame is hilarious against npc invaders cause it can basically perma stunlock them
Those tier-lists made me mad
They're likely a bit older so I'll give some of the placements a pass. But some are inexcusable
Scarlet Aeonia is actually hilarious in the colosseum as you can turn into a human nuke and dive into the center of a battle.
That seems like fun to use in pvp, even if it isn't the best
@@BigDiji It really is, just like elden stars.
Pest Threads was actually vital to me beating Elden Beast.
pest threads and worst spells going together is extremely silly
Recently did my first faith build run and man I am disappointed at how terrible most of these incantations are, and some of them even wants you to invest in intelligence as well.
there are also a lot of good ones, don't underestimate fire sling, catch flame and flame of the fell god for early game
an easy why to dodge waterfowl point blank is to just light roll four times away from her as she floats.
I know that litany of proper death is meant to be used against those who live in death, but... *wow.* That is maybe the worst spell in any fromsoft game.
There are a billion other spells that do the same things a thousand times better. It also doesn't work on Tibia Mariners for some reason.
The possibility of killing enemies by T-posing completely makes up for it
@@jimshotfirst4887 Wait a minute. I can't argue with that.
it might work against lich dragon fortisax, black blade kindred and deathrite birds
Ds2 Immolation be like:
Theres not even any frost in ds2 so you cant even use it to reset frostbite
With discuss. You can let enemies sit in it when it turns around dealing damage over time. If you get the spacing right.
litany is for skeleton only
It's always a lovely surprise when weapons considered bad by the community turn out actually pretty good, or at least decent.
That tiny disc just shreds anything that doesn't register projectiles, and even then you might still get a hit in thanks to the disc returning to you.
i'd love to see a worst ash of war run after this that'd be interesting
I'm planning on it, but it likely won't be a video anytime soon!
what weapon would be used though? the most basic maybe like dagger and broadsword
@@arturkey9084 I'd say any weapon can be used but you can only deal damage by using the ash of war, and no affinity on the ash
Litany of proper death is only good against undead. Destroys em
Pest threads among the WORST Incantations? HERESY! Still great to see it get love.
Super slept on man. It’s nutty against big things. There’s definitely some finesse in knowing where to position to absolutely break the spell though.
I do wish I were better against smaller targets though.
It's pretty straightforward, get as directly underneath a big boss as possible to make Pest Threads deal absolutely absurd damage
@@jimshotfirst4887 but to get the most of the tracking and pierce. There’s a specific spot on fire giant where the threads travel all the way up to his head In phase 1
I think pest threads is finally starting to get the recognition it deserves!
It is nutty. Its white, sticky, and goes all over the place
I still remember how cracked the drill sorcery was even though most people think it’s a$$.
It deserves more recognition!
Discus of light is freaking amazing considering its fp cost and spamability. You can just throw 15 discus and watch the health bar melt. Also great for clearing mobs.
Litany of Proper Death is Bad, but it does Annihilate Death Rite Birds! It is super satisfying in specific scenarios, but is otherwise entirely useless
Discus carried my golden order int/faith build. Easily one shots waves of mobs late game and the return hit catches a lot of dodging players off guard
On more than one occasion, I've ordered the 5 Guys milkshake with literally every topping they offer.
Bacon in ice cream is goated.
I'll have to give it a try before I really knock it!
The insect threads are actually really good
For reference, Discus of Light only costs 3 FP. Literally the only spell that comes close is Carian Slicer at 4 FP.
Using Bloodflame Talons against an enemy that doesn't bleed: Boss shit.
8:08 "Who's a good boi ? Whoza good boi ? :D Yes, it's you ! Catch the frizzbee come on ! Bring back da freesbee :3 "
Honestly lightning strike is underrated in my opinion because it is very spamable and absolutely shreds bigger bosses
beast claw is actually really good if you have a strength faith build. it hits for 700+ with a maxed out clawmark seal no buffs
If you counted it you could used discus of light combined with the sentinel shield and golden retaliation to deflect your magic back at the enemies
"damn..ageee.." I've never seen someone say something more smoothly.
It's not a Diji vid unless I emphasize "DAMAGE"
Can't believe how much they fumbled on the pyromancy.
he used the helmet that reduces damage output for a good chunk of the run… can’t tell if that’s on purpose or if he’s just that much of a chad
If it's beatable with armor of thorns, it's beatable with anything else
Full honesty, haven't finished the video yet. But did you try to use Litany of Proper Death against any undead enemies like skeletons? That's where it shines
dude gave giddeon the penance stare from ghost rider
Theory of the next one, Bad Ash of Wars
Your character dying sounds like Frodo when he gets stung by Shelob in the lord of the rings
Young 2 baby. He's got the best screams of them all!
Discuss off light is underrated imo , 348 damage 3 fp per cast. This was on a 130ish character using golden order seal and did way better on fire giant and malikath than expected
It got a pretty bad rep since it wasn't very good on launch. The range increase and fp cost to cast being reduced was absolutely necessary for it to thrive
This guy sounds like hes gonna breakdown crying out of nowhere.
Litany of proper death is a spell designed for only undead enemy’s.
yep!
Pretty sure your helmet was actually reducing pest threads damage so it could have done even more insane damage.
nobody has ever read the description of Litany of Proper Death
