This is one of my favorite Mario games. Down to the story and pixel art this game rocks. I still have so much nostalgia for this game and this game along with fire emblem is what got me into rpgs. Also rip alpha dream.
My very first RPG game as well. This was such an awesome game. This & Bowser's Inside Story are my absolute favorite Mario & Luigi games, some of my favorite Mario games of all time & one of my favorite RPG games.
9:16 to anyone who hasn't played this game yet, one thing that should be mentioned is that putting the Bonus Points into the same Stat every time isn't actually as good of an Idea as it seems, because if you keep increasing the same Stat multiple times in a row, the game starts rigging the roll to only give you small numbers like +1 or +2. You're supposed to keep spreading the Bonuses around, because if do, they keep increasing as you go, raising to +3, +4, and so on, which more than offsets not putting points into the same one *every* time.
For attack that doesnt really matter. While it is true you mostly only get +1 or +2 after rolling the same stat three times in a row, your attack gets ridiciulous even with just a +1, making the other stats (outside of speed) pretty much useless. If you battle every enemy you find in a place and later on use the item E. Gadd gives you (the item that doubles your Exp when you beat an enemy without taking damage), your attack is crazy, making every other stat useless.
@@TMG-Germany My point was that you can reach close-enough-to, if not pretty much just as high Attack to be just as overpowered without leaving everything else needlessly underdeveloped, which can still matter for someone who may still make mistakes with their commands every now and then. It's why I specified "people who haven't played this yet" at the start. Look, I'm not even saying "absolutely never do this", but simply that you can get better effects while still having the same result in the end.
@@TMG-Germany yea Luigi usually has much lower pow than mario to balance this I usually give him a ton of Stach so his critical chance will compensate the lower pow. and luigi has higher defense so this help him being tanky and do good damage

As a kid I had a save file dedicated to that exact scene just because it was so perfect. The impression was so good that even I had no idea what was happening. The way Bowletta outted Luigi and the subsequent reaction was comedic timing at its finest (this series in general had excellent comedic timing, even if the jokes don't always land), and the entire scene was actually just the high point of the series.
The interesting thing from what I have observed over my playtime on each game in the Mario & Luigi series is that it's consistently about 20 hours for my first save file. (Beating the game) The only two exceptions so far for me were Partners in Time (only 18 hours) and Dream Team (25 hours)
@Tom S. My 100 hour save file is me as a kid being stupid. Skipped every enemy I could, didn't realize I can choose the bonus when I got a level up (So I only put it in the default, which is HP). Nearly every boss took a few hours, even days to beat until I pretty much knew the attacks perfectly. I also really wanted to have the best price from that surfing minigame, and that game is effing hard...

As for the Mario Bros inclusion... Nintendo most likely was going for the whole concept of, "If you have one of our Mario GBA titles and your friends have other Mario GBA titles, you can all still have multiplayer gameplay, despite owning different titles." Which is rather crazy smart when looked at that way, eh?
That falls apart when the multiplayer mode was exclusively Download Play, though. You only needed one person to own the game to play Mario Bros multiplayer.

It’s worth noting, AlphaDream were actually comprised of veterans who worked for Square Enix prior. The director of Superstar Saga is the same guy who directed Super Mario RPG.
Also because Yoko Shimomura (also known for Kingdom Hearts) is a genius and arguably her cheery, energetic and peppy stuff is of even more quality than her grandiose, bombastic work.
I'd reccommend alternating between attack and stache, a npc actually tells you that the more times you upgrade a stat in a row the lower the numbers in the roulette become, so instead of a +1 in attack you can throw a +5 in stache and another +5 in attack the next time

One, *singular* instance where Bowser's minions wasn't complete garbage; because things are kind of on autopilot and you can look up from the screen, this is a game that I can play riding in the car without getting motion sick
Real talk, that transition from the dance joke to keeping the music going in explaining the introduction is a really smooth transition. Really good job with that!
The first and so far only Mario and Luigi game I’ve played. Probably my favorite game in general. I also like how instead of just a plain or gradient background for the cartridge, it just has Cackletta on it like she’s saying, “whatcha playing?!?”
I actually really liked Bowser's Minions. You don't do a whole lot but there's a good deal of strategy that goes into team comp and it's satisfying to watch your guys yeet the enemy team out of existence. The protagonist, Captain Goomba actually goes through a really neat character arc too. I would totally recommend it myself.
The stat bonuses are valued AGAINST constantly just picking one. If you pick the same bonus frequently you'll only get 1-3 points; but if you spread it out bonuses will consistently be 3-5
I played this game as a multiplayer mode. Yeah that's right, I played this with my nephew. So you may be asking yourself "how did you see the game in such a small screen and hitting such small buttons?" well.... we didn't because with the power of emulation we just binded the A and B buttons to different keys and that's it, we also had a big PC screen and all. We just had to take turns like "you are the leader on this area so you move" and so on. It was pretty fun, specially the timed attacks and all. Obviously that made the game easier but it also made it more fun to play.
I for one really loved the final Cackletta fight. The majority of the game has a brilliant relaxing difficulty, nothing that's so hard as to put you off of it, but nothing too easy either. The final world/area gives you a good taste of the difficulty to come, and the Bowletta fight, though disappointing, was a nice setup appetiser for the next thing. Cackletta made me stuck as a child for several years, and yet I loved the spike in challenge. The difficulty really makes her feel like final boss material, and scalling that wall makes beating the game so much more satisfying than if she were as tough as any other boss. Also, I kinda liked the Bowsers Minions mode. Yeah it's just you doing a whole lot of nothing, but if you play it in short bursts side by side with the adventure, it's a good pace breaker that let's you really sit back and relax. It's a nice way to kill a few hours that's for sure.
The 1hp on the final boss isn't a problem if you spec into speed. I usually make Luigi spec into Attack, Defense, and Stache. And Mario into Hp, Bp, and Speed. So during the final boss Mario goes first and I use that turn to heal.

@@dmas7749 A lot of battles in this game can end pretty quickly. Speed can make all the difference between each enemy attacking once and each attacking twice, which is a big difference proportionally. It can be a huge time save after a few dozen battles.
@@ethanhayes7038: i can't say that i've really messed with speed, but another thing RPGs do to make it more worthwhile is decide your actions before turn order starts...can't say i'm a fan of it, but everyone acts on their turn in SSS, making that advantage far less advantageous... just making sure i heard you right, but having a high enough speed lets you take a second action, or having a very low speed lets enemies take it instead, right? if that's so it's better than i considered "A lot of battles in this game can end pretty quickly." for the enemies, SMT this ain't
If you noticed,the bonus you can get for a stat decreases the more you add a bonus to that stat. I call it "Stale-up",and it's not a problem if you balance the stats. Also,this stays for all games.Luigi is the defense,Mario is the offense.
I remember that final boss fight -- it was the first time ever I spent an hour in a single fight. I personally like the art style of the original better.

There is actually a reason to upgrade another stat than attack, and that stat is Speed. The reason is that if you get your speed high enough you can outspeed Cackletta's Soul during the final fight and heal, making it much easier to survive her first attacks.
Bowser’s Minions isn’t completely bad. It’s just a mode that’s best to not to be marathoned unlike the main game. It has some neat strategy elements and the side story is pretty neat. But it does involve some RNG on some battles which bogs down some of the experience. Still I say it’s a nice addition. I’d personally like to see it come back in future games but heavily tweaked to make the battles more involved, probably by removing the levels and focusing more on what units are best suited for each stage as well as captain commands.
1:45 Uh, Nintendo _has_ given Tomato Adventure _some_ recognition. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, two of the spirits you can collect are from that game.
@@snomvish Trust me, it's not. You'd be a few level's below her own and still beat her with only the Mario Bros 2 strongest attacks, without even giving Cackletta a chance to attack. This actually happened to me, by the way.
Umm, major thing missed. Bowser always fails to kidnap peach, but one desert goomba can do it right in the Bros' faces and get away with it several times. Goombas really are great (Also that escort part is my favourite thing in the game. Trolling Peach is weirdly amusing.)
To make a small correction (or edit), we later found in in the remake why Bowser lost his memory... Because Captain Goomba decided to do something bold and jump off a cliff for no apparent reason...and Bowser's noggin was the landing bad. So a bonk on the head is what caused Bowser's amnesia and ultimately through a chain of many events, the birth of Bowletta. Good job Captain Goomba, way to represent!
2:12 talked about way more than some of the mario sports games do people dont talk about mario sluggers or hoops AT ALL despite being super good and strikers is talked about a tiny bit but is still underappreciated
I feel like Bowser has mostly been the victim in these series. Whether that’s someone deceiving him; something copying him; Aliens shooting at his ship; some purple dream dracula using him and all other kinds of villains who use Bowser.
This is one of the best written games ever published by Nintendo. I love Inside Story's dialogue but I still appreciate how much more "quirky" Superstar Saga's dialogue is in comparison. It's such a special game that makes me laugh by how ridiculous some of the situations Mario and Luigi get into. I still miss Alphadream alot but seeing the Mario and Luigi RPG series getting so much love makes me really happy as a fan. Now more people can tryout and play this amazing series thanks you Antdude. this is possibly my all-time favourite GBA game, alongside pokemon Emerald, it was my first GBA game, and I already played some mario games, but this game HIT THE SPOT! The playability felt familiar to pokemon with the added twist of having to perform the attacks and defenses (esentialy giving you the change to a complete no-damage fight) witgh skill and not luck, and the if I have to sum this franchise in words, I would say they have some of the best comedy in children videogame (since some more adult games like Bayonetta definitely make me laugh harder). And I was very astounded to find the 3DS remake flew past my radar, because when I found it, the Bowser Inside Story remake was also done, so I IMMEDIATLY bought the SS saga remake and played through it with a big goofy smile as nostalgia took over me. And on that note, the theme of the kingdom all based in laughing and smiling grew on me, especialy considering some references you might get such as the last level (excluding Bowser's fortress) being called JOKE'S END, as in "thats it guys, the joke has ended", explaining why the place is gloomy, and for japanese players, being an icy castle plays a pun on how in japanese, a bad joke is described as "cold".
I play superstar saga remake and as long as one of your bros has over 120 speed you can attack first on Cackletta's Soul, and I use that speed to use a max nut, meaning both bros have full hp at the start of the fight
This freaking game!! Still one of my favorites, and my gateway into RPGs as a whole. While Bowser's Inside Story is considered the best by many, I'm more partial to this one. If only because I prefer the idea of the brothers fighting using themselves instead of the usual items. I knew about the cut Nintendo characters during the coffee portion, but I was not aware they had actual sprites!! Now I really wish they were included.
I think you pointed out why I really enjoy the combat system in this game in comparision with the rest of the series tbh. You're actually fighting with the bros as opposed to using items.
Yeah, I do remember the final bossfight sucking. Actually, once you heal up, it's a really good fight, but the fact that you start with 1 HP and the enemy attacks first is really annoying. You don't even have time to practice dodging the moves because you die with 1 hit, and if you do, you have to watch the cutscene and do the previous fight all over again. It was painful.
Square Enix worked on Mario Hoops 3 on 3 and Mario Sports Mix yet they never thought to included Geno amongst the other guest starring Final Fantasy characters. Such a huge missed opportunity

You didnt even bring up how your bros attacks can gain an alternate attack in the original, just brushing past it on the remake, the biggest charm to the game imo was that it had that feature where you used the same attacks but could use alternate buttons for more damage like how splash bros adv. Does like 2.5x damage to spiked enemies, and almost nobody knows that.. Great video overall though Im looking forward to the Bowser's inside story video, my favorite game in the series followed very closely by superstar saga

As for the Mario Bros inclusion... Nintendo most likely was going for the whole concept of, "If you have one of our Mario GBA titles and your friends have other Mario GBA titles, you can all still have multiplayer gameplay, despite owning different titles."

That falls apart when the multiplayer mode was exclusively Download Play, though. You only needed one person to own the game to play Mario Bros multiplayer.

The GBA was really what made this game's soundtrack work as amazing as it did, honestly.
Also because Yoko Shimomura (also known for Kingdom Hearts) is a genius and arguably her cheery, energetic and peppy stuff is of even more quality than her grandiose, bombastic work.
I'd reccommend alternating between attack and stache, a npc actually tells you that the more times you upgrade a stat in a row the lower the numbers in the roulette become, so instead of a +1 in attack you can throw a +5 in stache and another +5 in attack the next time

One, *singular* instance where Bowser's minions wasn't complete garbage; because things are kind of on autopilot and you can look up from the screen, this is a game that I can play riding in the car without getting motion sick

The first and so far only Mario and Luigi game I’ve played. Probably my favorite game in general.
I also like how instead of just a plain or gradient background for the cartridge, it just has Cackletta on it like she’s saying, “whatcha playing?!?”
I actually really liked Bowser's Minions. You don't do a whole lot but there's a good deal of strategy that goes into team comp and it's satisfying to watch your guys yeet the enemy team out of existence. The protagonist, Captain Goomba actually goes through a really neat character arc too. I would totally recommend it myself.

The stat bonuses are valued AGAINST constantly just picking one. If you pick the same bonus frequently you'll only get 1-3 points; but if you spread it out bonuses will consistently be 3-5

I played this game as a multiplayer mode. Yeah that's right, I played this with my nephew.
So you may be asking yourself "how did you see the game in such a small screen and hitting such small buttons?" well.... we didn't because with the power of emulation we just binded the A and B buttons to different keys and that's it, we also had a big PC screen and all. We just had to take turns like "you are the leader on this area so you move" and so on.
It was pretty fun, specially the timed attacks and all. Obviously that made the game easier but it also made it more fun to play.

The most underrated Mario series.
I for one really loved the final Cackletta fight. The majority of the game has a brilliant relaxing difficulty, nothing that's so hard as to put you off of it, but nothing too easy either. The final world/area gives you a good taste of the difficulty to come, and the Bowletta fight, though disappointing, was a nice setup appetiser for the next thing.
Cackletta made me stuck as a child for several years, and yet I loved the spike in challenge. The difficulty really makes her feel like final boss material, and scalling that wall makes beating the game so much more satisfying than if she were as tough as any other boss.
Also, I kinda liked the Bowsers Minions mode. Yeah it's just you doing a whole lot of nothing, but if you play it in short bursts side by side with the adventure, it's a good pace breaker that let's you really sit back and relax. It's a nice way to kill a few hours that's for sure.
Alphadreams will be remembered
The 1hp on the final boss isn't a problem if you spec into speed. I usually make Luigi spec into Attack, Defense, and Stache. And Mario into Hp, Bp, and Speed. So during the final boss Mario goes first and I use that turn to heal.

@@dmas7749 A lot of battles in this game can end pretty quickly. Speed can make all the difference between each enemy attacking once and each attacking twice, which is a big difference proportionally. It can be a huge time save after a few dozen battles.
@@ethanhayes7038: i can't say that i've really messed with speed, but another thing RPGs do to make it more worthwhile is decide your actions before turn order starts...can't say i'm a fan of it, but everyone acts on their turn in SSS, making that advantage far less advantageous...

If you noticed,the bonus you can get for a stat decreases the more you add a bonus to that stat.
I call it "Stale-up",and it's not a problem if you balance the stats.
Also,this stays for all games.Luigi is the defense,Mario is the offense.

There is actually a reason to upgrade another stat than attack, and that stat is Speed. The reason is that if you get your speed high enough you can outspeed Cackletta's Soul during the final fight and heal, making it much easier to survive her first attacks.

Bowser’s Minions isn’t completely bad. It’s just a mode that’s best to not to be marathoned unlike the main game. It has some neat strategy elements and the side story is pretty neat. But it does involve some RNG on some battles which bogs down some of the experience. Still I say it’s a nice addition. I’d personally like to see it come back in future games but heavily tweaked to make the battles more involved, probably by removing the levels and focusing more on what units are best suited for each stage as well as captain commands.

Uh, Nintendo _has_ given Tomato Adventure _some_ recognition. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, two of the spirits you can collect are from that game.
The reason all those GBA games had Mario Bros. included was so you could always play multiplayer with a friend, no matter which cartridge they owned.

Bowser always fails to kidnap peach, but one desert goomba can do it right in the Bros' faces and get away with it several times. Goombas really are great (Also that escort part is my favourite thing in the game. Trolling Peach is weirdly amusing.)

To make a small correction (or edit), we later found in in the remake why Bowser lost his memory...
Because Captain Goomba decided to do something bold and jump off a cliff for no apparent reason...and Bowser's noggin was the landing bad. So a bonk on the head is what caused Bowser's amnesia and ultimately through a chain of many events, the birth of Bowletta.

This is one of the best written games ever published by Nintendo. I love Inside Story's dialogue but I still appreciate how much more "quirky" Superstar Saga's dialogue is in comparison. It's such a special game that makes me laugh by how ridiculous some of the situations Mario and Luigi get into. I still miss Alphadream alot but seeing the Mario and Luigi RPG series getting so much love makes me really happy as a fan. Now more people can tryout and play this amazing series thanks you Antdude.

Also I remember not even realizing Mario and Luigi was even really a new series until inside story.
this is possibly my all-time favourite GBA game, alongside pokemon Emerald, it was my first GBA game, and I already played some mario games, but this game HIT THE SPOT! The playability felt familiar to pokemon with the added twist of having to perform the attacks and defenses (esentialy giving you the change to a complete no-damage fight) witgh skill and not luck, and the if I have to sum this franchise in words, I would say they have some of the best comedy in children videogame (since some more adult games like Bayonetta definitely make me laugh harder). And I was very astounded to find the 3DS remake flew past my radar, because when I found it, the Bowser Inside Story remake was also done, so I IMMEDIATLY bought the SS saga remake and played through it with a big goofy smile as nostalgia took over me.
And on that note, the theme of the kingdom all based in laughing and smiling grew on me, especialy considering some references you might get such as the last level (excluding Bowser's fortress) being called JOKE'S END, as in "thats it guys, the joke has ended", explaining why the place is gloomy, and for japanese players, being an icy castle plays a pun on how in japanese, a bad joke is described as "cold".

I play superstar saga remake and as long as one of your bros has over 120 speed you can attack first on Cackletta's Soul, and I use that speed to use a max nut, meaning both bros have full hp at the start of the fight
This freaking game!! Still one of my favorites, and my gateway into RPGs as a whole. While Bowser's Inside Story is considered the best by many, I'm more partial to this one. If only because I prefer the idea of the brothers fighting using themselves instead of the usual items. I knew about the cut Nintendo characters during the coffee portion, but I was not aware they had actual sprites!! Now I really wish they were included.
I think you pointed out why I really enjoy the combat system in this game in comparision with the rest of the series tbh. You're actually fighting with the bros as opposed to using items.
I think minion quest is a very fun side mode that I would play a entire game with the same ideas and gameplay

Yeah, I do remember the final bossfight sucking. Actually, once you heal up, it's a really good fight, but the fact that you start with 1 HP and the enemy attacks first is really annoying. You don't even have time to practice dodging the moves because you die with 1 hit, and if you do, you have to watch the cutscene and do the previous fight all over again. It was painful.

You didnt even bring up how your bros attacks can gain an alternate attack in the original, just brushing past it on the remake, the biggest charm to the game imo was that it had that feature where you used the same attacks but could use alternate buttons for more damage like how splash bros adv. Does like 2.5x damage to spiked enemies, and almost nobody knows that.. Great video overall though Im looking forward to the Bowser's inside story video, my favorite game in the series followed very closely by superstar saga
