"I like you Matt, but would have traded two of you to get Dion" - Hilarious
That’s probably going to be in part 2
Hey Steve, Do the Iggy trade to the flames from the stars! I'm curious to know what exactly came of that through everything.
2017 still gives me nightmares
Do how the Bruins got Nathan Horton from the Kyle McLaren trade tree
@Travis Reyna that was in 88
Fun fact: Fredrik Sjöström is now the GM of one of the most successful teams in Sweden, captained by Joel Lundqvist (Hank's twin)
Joel in nhl21 looks so much like hank
@@colester27816 it’s almost like... identical twins... _look similar_ 😳
Loved him with the Rangers. So damn fast.
As a Flames fan, I am happy with how this trade worked out. Stajan is loved by this fan base. His memorable goal coming back after the tragic passing of his baby, the charitable work he has done in Calgary and scoring the series clincher against the Canucks. There aren’t to many Flames fans that can say a bad word about him.
and he's continued to be a part of the flames family post-retirement. can't even say that of iggy.
He’ll be involved with the organization for years to come
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this might be the biggest trade in recent history that was almost completely inconsequential for either team.
no cares if you said it before
You forgot about when Ottawa traded phaneuf to L.A.
Which eventually ties into Duclair-for-Dzingel with the Jackets via Nick Shore.
...and it wasn't even the worst move the Kings made in 2018
That’s probably going to be in pt 2
Ottawa wasn't in the deal for Phaneuf originally, and these trade trees only really focus on what the two original teams involved did with the assets in the first trade. No disrespect to Ottawa, they just weren't the focus I presume.
@@liltiger3 then don't call it "& Where It's Gone From There"
Fans here in Calgary will always love Ragin' Stajan after the emotional goal he scored against the Oilers after his baby son died and for the 2015 playoff series winner he scored against the Canucks
The Dany Heatley for Marian Hossa trade tree would be interesting. Milan Michalek is a part of it, and I think a lot of people forget how long he played in Ottawa.
I cant imagine them doing a bit on that because of the reasoning for the trade initially.
@@frozen-curmudgeon They can just mention that Heatley was in a car accedent which resulted in a death of a team mate. Heatley wanting a fresh start asked for a trade.
Excited for the J.S. Giguere tree
Ooo that'll be a big one
I'm a Flames fan who absolutely loves Matt Stajan. Class act.
Wife bought tickets to one game that year, amd it was Dions debut. Best Leaf game I've been too. Was so pumped, aside from the hits and fight, I was impressed with how well he got pucks through traffic and to the net. Honestly, really bummed it ended so poorly. But he gave us identity for a while.
Steve you can't just leave a TRADE TREE on a cliffhanger like that!! That is torture! Loving the stuff you recorded while you were taking some time with the baby, congratulations again man!
Part 2: Jason Blake & Vesa Toskala for JS GIGUERE 😂
I think it’s fun to hear what Burke has to say about the trade.
That game against the Cannuks was the first I ever saw in person...excellent introduction into the leafs fan experience! I just wish that I hadn't asked my dad to buy me the book copy of the team roster.... Immediately out of date....
I remember the 2015 trade deadline where Dion was almost traded to Detroit but TO wouldn't retain salary. So very happy, as the Wings were very close to rebuilding, that it didn't happen.
Phaneuf kinda screw Ottawa going into the expansion draft as he had an NMC, therefore obligated to protect him, which lead to Marc Methot be exposed. Marc Methot aka Erik Karlsson's defence partner.
And it was downhill from there ... literally lol
Hey Steve, can you do the Martin Havlat to Chicago trade? It's pretty interesting and goes pretty deep
I'm not a Toronto Maple Leafs fan I'm a Sabres fan but I'm a huge Brian Burke fan and I'm a huge Steve dangle fan huge fan of these trade trees and your podcast and I'm raining Brian Burke book right now so your book was really good Steve so and entertaining
One of the worst trades in Flames history. Daryl Sutter was a terrible GM.
The whole thing with Sutter was such a shame because he was a great coach but a mediocre GM. As a Flames fan it always felt like he was building a team for himself to coach, but not for his actual coach that didn’t know how to get the best out of the roster
Hall of fame coach, horrible GM.
Phaneuf was the ultimate professional despite the daily media craziness he faced in Toronto. I felt he was best suited in Ottawa on the #2 pairing and thus avoiding the main spotlight (which Karlsson took away from him) and had a good run with the Sens during their 2017 playoff run. That OT goal he scored against Boston in game 2 was memorable.
Dion Phaneuf, he was a stud in Ottawa... him in Ottawa was the only good seasons we had of Cody Ceci and he played great in the playoffs.. he was kind of a Chris Phillips kinda player with a great shot.. I liked him much more as a senator and its too bad we couldn't get to the SCF in 2017, because I think Ottawa wins the cup against Nashville.. it would have been close and such a fun series!
Agree. I felt both Ottawa and Pittsburgh matched up well against the Preds which ultimately Pittsburgh proved when they despatched Nashville fairly easily.
Loved the commentary by Burke! Great insight behind the trade.
Can you do the Jason Arnott for Bill Guerin trade tree, it actually had a lot of impact on quite a few teams actually
(Leafs fan here) - trade tree for the trades that sent Dany Heatley in and out of Ottawa?
Most people hate Dion Phaneuf but I liked him. People said he didn't score but he was a Defenceman with nobody to play with. For what he was given and his role I think he did really well and if we got another 25 year old Dion Phaneuf with the current leafs I think he would be absolutely great
Dion certainly was a beast back in the Calgary days. People forget he was a runner-up for the Norris (to Lidstrom of course). I still remember his hit on Kopitar, I wonder if they brought it up when he was traded to LA?
I remember waking up that morning and see the trade. I was so happy at the time.
I have one of eemeli rasanen's sticks, kingston frontenacs sell players used sticks and this thing is massive. Its cut to like 6'5 and is a 115 flex.
fun fact: keith aulie and matt stajan both played together in munich/DEL :)
Since you work with Burke how about a breakdown of the Sedin deal? You know where he moved up to select the twin and how that worked out for the Canucks.
These videos are awesome, please keep doing them!
Not much of a Burke fan >> but i love your listening to you Steve >> Keep up the good work happy Daddy !!
Lets Go Trade Tree with Burke
this deserves more views
Been waiting for this
You did a Ron Francis trade tree for Carolina trading him to Toronto, you MUST do a Ron Francis trade tree for his trade to Pittsburgh from Hartford
Steve Dangle is what’s keeping me sane in quarantine
you might have already done this, because the trade tree interviews with Burke were likely done in 1 sitting, but seeing the jerseys in Burke's background, what happened to the flurry of picks that went flying in 1999 that wound up getting both Sedin twins in Vancouver?
Fun fact rasanen, greening and donaghey have all played in the danish league
I love how he has the sedins jerseys framed
Do the Shea Weber and P.K Subban trade please
Thanks Steve
Phaneuf sustained a serious hip injury in CGY and unfortunately played before it was 100%. The hip was reinjured in a playoff game against Chicago and he was never the same.
Brian Burke with the undone tie...some things don't change even in quarantine
i think this is one trade that the flames should still be benefiting from but they pretty much got a 3rd line center for a top d man
Just found this series, please do a tree for when the Hawks sent Chelios to Detroit
Did he mention that he drafted the Sedins? I don't think he's made that clear enough to everyone.
Ive been using a Bauer 1S stick off sideline swap with Cody Donaghey's name on it. For some reason it has value to me now
Hey Steve, have you thought about doing a reaction/commentary of UrinatingTree’s vid on the Leafs cup drought?
I am waiting for you to talk about the JS Gigeuire trade
Pretty good. But you forgot to mention that Phaneuf was traded to LA with the senators retaining his salary but the kings ended up buying him out after 2019
Love the trade trees Dangle! I enjoy your content so much. I hope you are never brought into a studio and ruined
Oh man does this trade bring back bad memories. I loved Dion. He was a beast for the flames, and I would have loved to have kept him for a few more years. I know he would have fallen off at one point, but what the flames got back was garbage.
This trade haunts me to this day. As a Flames fan.
Lets get a trade tree about how the Preds signing and trading David Gosselin led to them acquiring Luke Kunin!
we need more trade trees with bb
I love these trees. I want many more to be done.
You guys should do the Patrick Roy trade tree
That’s actually part of the Lindros trade tree
We need some trade trees every hour
He said Matti Hagman lol
Keep doing an amazing job, would love to see Ron Francis or Phil Espositotrade tree someday
Can we get the Forsberg trade tree from the Flyers to the Predators?
Marian Gaborik trade tree
I’d love to know who Anaheim was going to offer for Phaneuf.
As a flames fan, I still cry about this trade. Too bad burke couldn't have fleeced somebody this bad when he worked for Calgary.
Fratten to LA as well
Can you do the Craig Rivet trade tree?
Fun fact: Fredrik Sjöstrom is now then GM of Frölunda
Steve I swear if I have to ask this again I’m gonna be pissed. please do the Rick Nash Trade OR the Marian Gaborik trade (rangers and Columbus)
Oh boy pissed UA-cam commenter. Never heard of that
@@ianzellick4980 lmao
I liked michalek for the leafs was always perplexed why they shafted him so hard.
You spend so much more time on Toronto videos! There are 30 other teams...
Love the trade tree videos! Hate the leafs!
I think you are secretly a flyers fan
damn, i loved hagman. should've asked burkey if that tavares-for-schenn thing was real.
Oh my god, my team in Germany just won against Keith Aulie ('s team). So schließt sich der Kreis...
As a Calgary fan, i was very happy to see Phaneuf traded from Calgary to the Leafs. Not that I'd wish that on the Leafs, but i was glad to see him leave town. Oh... and regarding Birks comment "these guys are bright guys", in Phaneufs case... not so much. IMO, he has the IQ of the weather in toronto. The management of the flames are much better than me. If it was me, I'd have traded him for a yellow dog, and then shot the dog.
Do the Gilmour trade. Beginning of 92
I’ll say this, as a Flames Fan, this would be the worst trade we ever made. Yeah the season was going not so stellar, but look at the coach we had, Brent Sutter, it was a horrible decision to bring him in. This trade if anything, was a huge loss for us, we missed the playoffs, and lost a huge asset to the team. This is my take.
Matti Hagman was Niklas Hagman's father. Brian means Niklas but instead says Matti.
Best tree ever
Do a Trevor Linden trade tree! please and thank you!
Louis Eriksson from Boston to Dallas
If Bergeron causes you so much pain, why don’t you cover the seguin trade for Boston fan’s ptsd.
I wonder when Dion Phaneuf will formerly retire.
I'm a Flames fan and was glad they got rid of Phaneuf. who was terribly overrated. He was out of position a lot as he always seemed to leave his position to go for the big hit and would leave his D partner out to dry. Matt Stajan I absolutely HATED. Stajan was a complete waste of a roster spot. Ian White was a waste of a trade. Clgary got absolutely jobbed on this deal and that was the SECOND time the Leafs jobbed the Flames, the first being the Doug Gilmour trade. The first time was because Doug Risebrough was incompetent buffoon and Daryl Sutter was a moody temperamental liar who told the Flames base he traded Robyn Regehr to Buffalo because he feuded with Phaneuf and they split the dressing room so 1 of them had to go and then lied and traded Dion. I didn't like him but he was better than the sad sacks we got from the Leafs so they should have kept him.
Toronto's 2009-10 season was awful. They were flirting with 30th place all season without even a first-round draft pick to look forward to. The night before this trade, I attended my first ever Leafs game; Saturday night, military appreciation night against the Canucks, and TO was up 3-0 after the 1st.... they ended up losing the game 5-3. The next day when the trades were announced, I thought Burke must've been at wit's end with the team, haha (not til years later where Burke joins the media and reveals all these details, such as the fact that the trade had already been arranged). That said, neat to say that I witnessed the last ever game for Stajan, Hagman, White, Mayers, Blake, and Toskala in the blue and white.
DOUBLE DIOOOONNN
Do the Trevor Linden trade
The Flames end of the deal was so bad. He was a Calder candidate and people looked at him as a Norris candidate as well, to get no picks back, a no stars back was terrible by Sutter. Such a bad deal.
Stajan played a lot of games but he was always overpaid, Ian white.....who cares, Hagman was garbage, I knew he was garbage because he scored on the Leafs who were terrible.
I can't believe we made this deal, especially adding in Sjostrom and Aulie who I thought at the time both had shown a lot of promise.
Glad Sutter got fired
Not a very interesting deal - a big name, certainly, no twists or turns or surprises though - but when you have the GM who made the deal? LOTS more interesting!
Brian would have been insane not to make that deal
So you just didn’t mention how dion was bad and it was a bad trade. Don’t really know why you only talked about production.
Burk is too smart for hockey
Adda boy colin greening
Phaneuf cost the sens by trying to lay the boom on his buddy Phil Kessel. Forever making costly mistakes lmao
Love how Dion just got tossed from the NHL, not a single team in the league offered him a contract lol
JAMAL MAYERS BEING THE OPPOSITE OF RON WILSON GOD BLESS HIM FOR HIS SACRIFICE
So come on .... why did Dion get traded from the Flames to begin with. Come on.... hahahahah. good one Dion.
I wish Steve Dangle wasn't narrating these videos! At least then I could listen to it instead of muting it and watching. He has got to be the most annoying person in sports!
OK.....maybe I haven’t eaten enough today and I’m a bit irritable,
But the title of this video involves Brian Burke and Sportsnet.....SO I EXPECTED BRIAN BURKE‼️ NOT STEVE DANGLE‼️No offence, Steve, you’re great......BUT CHANGE THE TITLE TO STEVE DANGLE TALKS ABOUT BRIAN BURKE‼️I know this wasn’t Steve’s mistake.....
