If the name Brock McGinn sounds familiar, he scored the OT goal in game 7 against Washington in last year's first round on a pass from Justin Williams. Rod Brind'Amour was their head coach.
And bailed out Mrazek's ass in the 3rd period. Ginner doesn't deny Wilson (I think it was Wilson; if not I'm sure someone will let me know), no 2OT, no 1st round win, no trip to the ECF.
I'm not a canes fan but always liked Francis so of course when I ordered a reverse retro Carolina 🐳 jersey I had cool hockey 🏒 put his #10 C on it. Looks even cooler knowing he actually used to wear the whalers jersey also back in the day
Ron Francis was most certainly the face of the whalers in the 80's. 5 times he lead them in scoring and 9 times in ppg.....I would say he was their best player. Also, upon his return to the franchise ,now in Carolina,he was 1st or 2nd in scoring 4 straight seasons!
Cam ward don't care achieved his goal in his first year. So yea. I'd say most players after they win that cup couldn't care less if they never win another game.
Problem was, the Canes never got a serviceable back-up until Cam was over-cooked. And then, the back-ups were meant to be replacements (Eddie Lack, Khudobin, etc). And then they finally moved on from Cam with...Scott Darling. Can't blame them for going all in on him, and it was a heck of a story, and I certainly wish Scott the best but...he was not good in Raleigh.
These videos are a lot of fun. I'd like to see some more trees from the 80's and 90's. Being a Bruins fan, I'd be interested in a Cam Neely tree. Did that trade help put Vancouver in position to make that finals appearance against the Rangers?
Doug Weight wasn’t slamming home many goals even though he’s a top end scorer because he dislocated both shoulders if I remember correctly. That’s why his cup lift looked so awkward
Super late to this comment, but then after his shoulder got completely obliterated in Game 5 against the Oilers, that sets the stage for another player to come back for the final 2 games of that series. That player? Erik Cole...less than 4 months removed from a BROKEN NECK!!! And Cole getting hurt accelerated the push for another trade deadline acquisition that paid off great dividends for the Canes during the Cup run, and who was that? Mark Recchi
I wonder if the trade tree could be extended more. It would be a reach. The Blues got Weight back that offseason. They traded their pick and moved up to get Patrik Berglund who was eventually traded for Ryan O’Reilly. Lol I know it’s a stretch. I love these videos. So entertaining and informative.
The first Ron Francis trade tree (the trade from Hartford to Pittsburgh) is monstrous compared to this. It had a great deal of benefit for both franchises (especially for the Penguins), and that tree kept going long after the Whalers moved to North Carolina and became the Carolina Hurricanes in 1997. The Hartford/Carolina side of the tree had the most branches but the Penguins side lasted longer.
You saying that Carolina felt they could continue to win after 06, me remembering that neither 06 Cup finalist made the 07 playoffs and laughing, then remembering I’m a Kings fan and 2015 happened...
Love the James Reimer anecdote because the Canes now have Frederik Andersen, a guy who they originally drafted but wouldn't play for and also played a long time for the Leafs.
I wonder why Steve has not done the Heatley for Hossa swap between the Trashers and Senators. It's a very interesting tree and it's crazy to see the pieces that came out of it as parts of it are still in play for the Jets and Senators to this very day! It's a crazy tree out what looks like a simple star swap.
You should also put together the trade tree for the first time this franchise traded away Ron Francis in 1991, as the Hartford Whalers. Although this was, by far, the worst trade in NHL history as it was the turning point that eventually led the team to leaving Hartford, the tree of this trade also helped Carolina win the Stanley cup in 2006 since it ended with Rod'Brindamour.
1798 points for Francis, not 1791, and 1249 assists, not 1294. 549g+ 1249a= 1798pts. Sorry, had to be that guy that nit picks. Lol. And yes, I knew that. He was my favorite player when I was a kid.
Ron Francis is an ex-Hartford Whaler, in fact he's probably the best player to ever play for the NHL Whalers; how could I possibly slander that underrated legend?
Still wanting Pronger for Shanahan.. lead to Binnington in STL. And B'rindamour in Carolina. And Binnington was barely walking when this trade was made.
'Rarely ever the best player on his team' except for nearly every single year he was with the Whalers. So, a full decade of being the best player on his team. In fact, he's the Whalers scoring leader by a full 300 points over the next guy, and that only includes his time as a Whaler, not as a Hurricane later on.
E Johnson and P Berglund are drafted in 1st round for St Louis that 1st round was off loaded to NJD. Whomever said those bottom 1st round picks meant nothing ... what did Berglund get StL. And all of their forwards mean nothing because Armstrong had Binnington on WAIVERS in Sept 018. C Ya cup.
As a masochistic Leafs fan I'd love to see these for both the Raycroft and Toskola trades. To this day when I hear the name Ferguson Jr I spit three times, virus be damned.
Was Jim Rutherford the GM at this time? I always thought he got fleeced by Shero, but since he' been in Pittsburgh I think he's been one of the best GMs in the league! Agressive, but not afraid to admit he made a mistake and attempt to fix it *er hem* *_Derick Brassard..._* lol
Yes, he was. Rutherford does good for about 5-8 years, and then he starts pushing too hard to keep a core together, and it tears down a team. It's what happened to the Canes. Pittsburgh is next.
I don't really want to relive this but I just want Dangle to shame the Waltons... Please do a trade tree for when the Blues sent Pronger to the Oilers.
Francis came to Toronto a half beat slower and never overcame it. Leech was great in Toronto except for allowing Jeremy Roenick to put the Leafs out of the playoffs with a wicked shot over Belfour's glove. That was the last time for a looooong time the words Leafs and playoffs where uttered in the same sentence. So it goes....
I get it's cool that they used that 4th rounder to acquire a playoff rental but the mantra of this series is always "the principal part of the deal" to keep it going, how is a 4th round pick a primary piece in a trade that involves 4 players and a 1st rounder lol
@@FutureZek But he did deny Wilson (it was Wilson, you were right), there was a 2OT, there was a 1st round win, and there was a trip to the ECF.
As a caps fan you didn’t have to remind me of that
Good ol Brock "I love to hit the goal post" McGinn
crosseyedCOBRA omggg😭
So, is it a stretch to say that the Leafs got beaten by David Ayers this year partly because of that trade sixteen years ago??? 🤔
i mean, brock mcginn was on that team, so... yes?
McGinn was part of the reimer injury I think, so yeah???
@@quinlanb7193 That was Slaven.
Fun Fact: James Reimer is top 10 in shutouts in Sharks history despite playing only 8 games for them.
wow
Ouch
Dang
How
short team history, so not many goalies to begin with. The number is only 3, tied with Kiprusoff and Boucher.
I was devastated when we traded Francis, but I can't complain about the result. I just wish he could've won a Cup with us
I'm not a canes fan but always liked Francis so of course when I ordered a reverse retro Carolina 🐳 jersey I had cool hockey 🏒 put his #10 C on it. Looks even cooler knowing he actually used to wear the whalers jersey also back in the day
I’m surprised Steve didn’t squeal like a schoolgirl at the James Reimer pick
As a cans fan, this was awesome. I felt like I was finishing Steve’s sentences the whole time
Yep. Kept going to myself "this is how we got Dougie Weight, ain't it?"
Who are the Cans? Hurricans?
@@christophermerlot3366 yes
Christopher Merlot whatta smart ass🤩
Ron Francis was most certainly the face of the whalers in the 80's. 5 times he lead them in scoring and 9 times in ppg.....I would say he was their best player. Also, upon his return to the franchise ,now in Carolina,he was 1st or 2nd in scoring 4 straight seasons!
Your trade trees are the only thing keeping me alive right now! 🤣
Ronnie Francis deserved to be on that 2006 team, he did so much for that franchise.
As a Canes fan who was in preschool when the trade (and the Cup run) happened, this video was very informative.
If James Reimer was still on the Leafs when Mathews came to town, would he have given up 34?
Yes.
That's why they traded him... I miss Optimus Reim :(
Hmm....interesting question. 34th like :-))
Nobody add another Like. Illuminati confirmed.
I was the first one to comment and didn't even add a like. It was meant to be.
Keep them coming. This is fun to watch.
Don't forget that Ginner is an elite penalty killer, I could watch him do it all day
Ben Williams yes!!! Fast skater and skilled as hell. Killing penalties with no stick?? Brock’s the man.
This is one of the most amazing trade trees ever Steve. Love these 🏒🏒🏒🏒!!
cam ward: won the conn smythe annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd (wait 14 years) nothing else happened.
He scored a goal! Yeah, I know... But... It's something.
He was really good in his prime, unfortunately he played behind some truly god awful bluelines
Cam ward don't care achieved his goal in his first year. So yea. I'd say most players after they win that cup couldn't care less if they never win another game.

I'm just discovering this trade tree topic, I am thoroughly enjoying it for my hockey fix!
Steve, just admit it.
The Canes are your second favorite team. :-D
OIlers Fan Steve has something to say about that.
@@akataj Especially considering the 06 Finals.
This was a really good one. Not as many pieces, but described so very well.
This was awesome. Thank you, Steve!
Can't believe he talked about a goalie in a Leafs-Hurricanes related video and did not mention David Ayres
He did allude to Mr. Ayres though.
His therapist is probably suggesting to not talk about Ayres any more.
@@TheVinylBroadcaster u mean psychiatrist?
I love McGinn and Reimer, I had no clue the Francis trade helped us acquire them. Absolutely love this series
What an insanely great video. Kudos.
Happy to hear you end the vid on what a stretch basing a trade tree on something as fungible as a fourth rounder is.
This was fun! Thanks!
Hey Dangle - this is an amazing video!

Doug Weight wasn’t slamming home many goals even though he’s a top end scorer because he dislocated both shoulders if I remember correctly. That’s why his cup lift looked so awkward

Erik Cole...less than 4 months removed from a BROKEN NECK!!!

That potvin figurine behind him is beautiful
Great video Steve. Hopefully you can add to this on how this trade helped the Canes win 2 cups after this year. McGinn/ Riemer
I love these trade tree videos
Always interestingbut how about a little blurb on the offer Chicago supposedly made to Toronto for Mahovlich?
Can you guys do the Tyler Seguin trade?
which one?
There is only one ...
Literally just watched Bruins vs Whalers replay game last night with Ron Francis out there
I wonder if the trade tree could be extended more. It would be a reach. The Blues got Weight back that offseason. They traded their pick and moved up to get Patrik Berglund who was eventually traded for Ryan O’Reilly. Lol I know it’s a stretch. I love these videos. So entertaining and informative.
Ron Francis is a good friend of my Dads and we used to sit in his GM a box with me wearing the opposing team’s jersey!!!
I can see it now Oilers vs Hurricanes 2006 rematch for 2020 it'd be appropriate.
Oh that would really be something. And even better if the WCF ends up being the Battle of Alberta.
The first Ron Francis trade tree (the trade from Hartford to Pittsburgh) is monstrous compared to this. I absolutely adore the series. Keep it up! 😁
Speaking of adorable, how's your little one these days Steve?
You saying that Carolina felt they could continue to win after 06, me remembering that neither 06 Cup finalist made the 07 playoffs and laughing, then remembering I’m a Kings fan and 2015 happened...
And to top it off, Edmonton then went on a 10-season playoff drought and we went on our 9-season drought in 2009.
Love the James Reimer anecdote because the Canes now have Frederik Andersen, a guy who they originally drafted but wouldn't play for and also played a long time for the Leafs.
Have Steve Dangle make the Wayne Gretzky trade tree from the Oilers to the Kings.
That trade with the Blues might not sound the greatest, but the Blues then packaged Reto Berra to the Flames to get good ol Jay Boumeester.
Can you make a trade tree about James Neal
francis was the best player on his team for a decade in hartford and for some time in carolina. not exactly rarely.
Ron Francis was my favourite player when I was a kid, I don't know what this says about me. But it can't be that I am very exciting.
Wow!!! James Reimer was a steel in the 2006 draft as his pick was held by 4 different teams
Columbus
Carolina
Chicago
And then Toronto
I wonder why Steve has not done the Heatley for Hossa swap between the Trashers and Senators. Can you do Rick Nash to the Rangers trade?
Love it! James Reimer is my neighbor in Raleigh! Let’s go Canes!
That is interesting to follow
This is a textbook example of good asset management.
Suggestion box: Cam Neely/Barry Pederson trade tree. 34 years later, still active.
For some reason, I was thinking it would be the FIRST Ron Francis trade tree (from HFD to PIT).
The Canes take leafs goalies and even their zamboni drivers haha
Oh my, moving up 2 spots in the 4th round, would take that over winning the draft lottery any day can't lie 😂

1798 points for Francis, not 1791, and 1249 assists, not 1294.
