I agree about the lack of USB power, it's crazy that they didn't just go with that. Also agree with the color. Regarding it being a sample player and not a sampler, they are clearly targeted towards people that prefer to approach samples as sounds similar to subtractive synthesis and drums, not full phrases, hip hop kind of sampling. This one's for the electronic music producers that want the happy accidents that come with the Elektron sequencer workflow.
also, I think its weird to have an entry level device that can control external synths but doesn't have an audio input. which means I'd have to bust out the mixer in order to run my bsii next to it?
Looking forward to a Akai Force deep dive! I'm coming from a Digitakt workflow and am completely at sea on the Force. I was poo pooing the Samples, till I watched Stimming perform live with it along with an Octratrack and the Arturia MicroFreak. It was an amazing show and a complete eye opener for me. Thanks for your videos, love what you do.
enjoy your way of presenting a great deal. model series is way more direct than other elektron gear, even digitakt. these small boxes made me realize that I do need knob per function. imo they really shine when you treat them as an instrument.
Digitakt is really great, and next to the Digitone, is my favourite device I’ve used so far. You don’t have timestretch, but besides that you get a great-sounding unit that’s really easy to work with. Compared to the older/bigger units, it’s really intuitive. I’d really recommend looking into it, especially since your work is so sample-oriented. The buttons are also pretty tactile/klick-klacky.
This is a perfect device for synthpop / post punk / goth type band to be used for drums and synth bass in one simple to use unit with a sequencer capable of programming entire songs with changes. I have just ordered one for this purpose. My only wish is it had 5 outputs so FOH could mix kick / snare / cymbals / toms / and bass separately. But it'll work. Looking forward to seeing how this works for my purposes. Mainly need a kick ass sequencer with good samples with some tweakability.
I bought a M:S because of you, and this video. Thank you for being such a huge inspiration for the music community :) Any chance on you ever making another video with it
It is really awesome what you can do with that elektron machines. Sure it ain't easy to wrap your head around this things, but it is well worth the effort. I own the digitone and its sequencer was a game changer for me. The digitone on it's own is a very very good groovebox with a unique sound. But the fact the to can sequence other gear/software with it, makes it really special. Nice review by the way 😉
Yo Accurate! At first I kind of dismissed this. Now it's becoming a bit more interesting. I'm on the hunt for a hardware sample player... after hours of research and list-making... this still seems to be at the top of the list, especially price-wise. Ideally I would love to use it as a "every vintage drum machine in one box" thing... LinnDrum, 707, 505, 808, 909, etc (kick, snare, clap, chh, ohh, and whatever else) per kit.... and just be able to do a lot of what the Roland TR8s does, for less cost. Every drum machine's one-shots are out there on the net, and they've been in my collection for years. Might be cool to keep it simple like that... just syncing it up to say, a Novation SL MKIII, along with a desktop synth module or something. Fun and easy. And the tweakability is fast. Pros: 1gb total storage, 64mb per project (11 minutes of mono sampling). Easy tweaking of stuff. 64 steps. The cons you listed suck, for sure... any luck with using a generic USB battery brick (like for phones)? Have you gotten used to the pad feel? Any other thoughts are appreciated. Thanks man!
Elecktron have lately been producing much easier products for the beginner to average user. Their pedigree is for real professional production and skilled electronic live musicians. So for those who this product is aimed at will definitely do the job and is a great product. So the DIgi series and this product is great for the beginners/average users and will produce excellent music for you without having to back to school - hopefully :)
Great video, like you, I felt confused as to what this product was for... I had the Digitakt and it was amazing, however its a peculiar work flow and a steep learning curve, its not as intuitive as the Maschine work flow, or even MPC Live... especially for non quantised drumming (its primarily a sequencer).....and limited sonically (but very high quality), but has fun features like conditional triggering.... I felt Digitakt, like the SP404 (when used for beat making not fx) requires commitment and focus to get the most out of it.....its not a dip in and dip out thing or pick up and play device, like Maschine, so I returned it..but if I started again, wanted to go DAWLESS and simplify, would defo consider just getting the Digitakt again.
It is a sampler. It's just based on audio files rather than analog input. That doesn't make it any less of a sampler. The only reason people associate samplers with analog input is due to the era in which they came into being, but the concept is the same regardless of how you get the audio into it.
is there a link to see the music video were you are using this unit? I´m a new user, and I´m liking it, as well I plan to pair to with a SP 404a so would be nice to see your process with them..... I´m trying to suck in all I can these crazy days , cheers
I have a Model:Samples and mostly love it except for a few things... My main gripe is that it seems to put all 6 of the samples on separate midi channels, am i wrong? That makes it quite a pain in the ass to connect it to midi pads like an Octapad, SPD-s, etc, and play it live by hitting the pads with drumsticks, like just about any other company who makes midi instruments let you do easily! Why the hell did they do that? it only lets me trigger them chromatically. I don't need 6 different pitched snares. If there is a way to set them all on the same channel? i didn't find anything about that. Another gripe is that most people are going to want to make a complete song using more than just 1 4-bar pattern, and keep all the beats using the exact same samples in place! It can be very time consuming and frustrating to locate the same samples, i have to first make a note of what folder, and especially what date i imported those samples, that can take a while, what a pain. I like a lot of Elektron's samples, but i prefer Native Instruments samples from Maschine much better, a lot of Elektrons snares sound real thin and quiet, and they sound great going through the Model: Samples filters. Also very cool to import old analog drum machine kits into it and edit them!
Is it possible to use an external MIDI keyboard controller with pads, like Arturia MiniLab etc? This would overcome the weak step buttons and pads on the thing itself. Also, I understand it is possible to load your own samples via the USB connection. Tried that yet, and how complicated is it?
Yes, it also makes programming melodies and notes into the step sequencer a lot easier, whether that’s programming it in the x0x style 16 step sequencer, if you just hold down the note on the external midi keyboard and press whatever step of the 1-16 on the model: samples it will then play that note, so you don’t have to use the encoder/knob to choose the note. You can also play notes chromatically which gives you 16 semitones to play and record live, then quantize it if you want and the quantize menu allows for a lot of options. Putting samples on it is really simple, literally just download the Elektron Transfer software and you just drop in the samples you want. If you drop in a folder with lots of different named folders with different samples in them it will keep the folders exactly the same in the menu, and if you push the the main orange knob and hold it down for a few seconds when you choose a sample, it’ll load that sample and the next 5 samples into the rest of the pads which is probably the one specific thing to keep in mind when thinking about how to organize samples when you drag and drop them into the model samples. Also it’s got class compliant USB, which means it also works with iOS devices, and you can send midi to and from it, and head the audio thats playing on the iOS device over USB, so you can sequence synths or play along with samples that way. Also works with windows and Mac in the same way, as an audio interface, so you can easily record tracks off of it over USB or easily use it with a DAW. It’s pretty nice, I like mine but I do wish I had a Digitakt or an Octatrack now, but the model samples is perfect for what I wanted it for, which is for live shows, so I can play samples from songs that had tracks I could recreate with the synths or other hardware I own, and is very easy to use, I feel like within 5 minutes of using it I knew 80% of the features, then it took me like an hour to go through the manual and learn the rest which I had missed some important stuff from, like ‘sample locking’, or using more than one sample in a track, and a lot of ‘shortcuts’ or just cool tricks and quality of life stuff
Started on a volca sample, went to the Digitakt, and am now stuck in the Octatrack. Not being able to sample is just how they hook you and reel you in. Go for the Digitakt unless you really can’t afford it or just want to try the elektron workflow.
I bought it and it was fun and intuitive. The overlap with the digitakt and the lack of individual outs is why I sold it. The pads are not that much better than the buttons on the digitakt. I bought a drumbrute impact instead and it is a fantastic machine for the price
Right. I’ve actually considered making a follow up video on this one. I never use it. It doesn’t offer anything unique, the limitations doesn’t inspire creativity and I’m not even a fan of the hardware itself. Electrons worst product by far :p Digitally would still be cool to check out but I’m not sure that one’s for me either…
@@AccurateBeats i've been looking at it recently as it's pretty cheap and actually in stock.. but i can see it's limits... the sample swapping is cool on paper but i guess it's really a way to get around the meager 6 pads compared to sp-404mkii, mc-101 16pad and all the other products out there.
Nice vid. Weighing this up vs the Circuit. £160 more but no synth engine (I appreciate that's not Samples' focus). Which would you take if it was one or the other?
Thank for the review ... I'm On the Market for a New Toy/ drum machine ... if you have any recommendation ... ( i already have the Brute Tanzbat & impact .. As well a the Blcknoir) . thinking of getting the RD-8 but not sure it's got the magic I want ( you can't fuckup the sounds as much as I'd want to ) .
I love digitone but while playing to record in you have to funny button thing, which I always do wrong and the unit stops😕 just can't do it lol, getting force to trigger it live.
Like to see if anyone has partnered this Elektron Model Samples with another groove production device, jamming on the Samples when dawless and maybe sharing samples from an Akai MPC, NI Maschine, Roland Groovebox, Novation Circuit, PreSonus Atom, Akai Fire, Ableton Push, Novation Launchpad, Arturia Drumbrute, etc. Like someone might do if they owned a MPC X and MPC Live, one for the studio and one for portability. It could be cool.
great vid....speaking about "who it is for": I came after the opposite conclusion after 2 years. I am not a sample based guy, as i need a beat machine that can sequence 1-2 synth, as my main sounds come from my guitar: so i will replace my digitakt with this one :) I think if someone really needs a beat machine and that really powerful sequencer, then the model samples is hard to beat (selling around 300 nowadays and haveing the sample lock with its new firmware) would love to have a model: synth as well! cheers and keep up your great work. #subbed
@Reed Austin yes, it is really great that you get elektron instruments at this price point...I have the samples for a week or so and I don't regret switching my digitakt for that. I was curious about the cycles too, but opted for the samples instead.
@Reed Austin well it depends. I am actually a guitarist playing with a looper. Then I got the volca beat bc the beats on my rc300 looper are crap/not editable. From the beats i went to buying the keys, bass and even FM.....suddenly I had to sequence 3 - 4 synths and play the guitar so i looked around for sequencer and decided to go for the digitakt. Then I realized that I cannot play so many instruments live hahahahaha....at the end the digitakt is just too much for me. the sample does the job of creating great sounding beats plus the ad hoc playablity and knob per function. And I kept the volca keys that is sequenced by the samples. So the digitakt is something that is great if you spend some time with to carefully plan your tracks (though no songmode) and program all sequences. It killed my creativity. The samples is just an awesome samplebased groovebox plus that insane elektron sequencer. with the keys bringing that analog vibe...the rest is taken care of my guitar and efx pedals.
@@ruz8099 hey, I'm also trying to do some guitar based music and just got an rc 202 looper, but I'm looking at the Circuit and this Samples as well for making some synths and beats to accompany the songs. Do you have any input maybe which one would be better?
@@Moody.Geezer hi luka, i have not played the circuit so i can't tell. I would see the advantage that you will have beats and (poly)synths in one box. I like the sequencer of elektron, that allows very "live" sounding drums with movements.
The best sampler Elektron has made to date is the OCTATRACK - Hands down it is the quintessential sample and beat mangler, unlike Maschine, unlike the SP-404, unlike the OP-1, and unlike the MPC. The workflow is insanely different and forces you to think of music creation in a more mathematical and abstract way. It is in another fucking dimension. PERIOD DOT.
I've been using the Digitone recently and tbh it doesn't feel menu divey at all. it might seem that way to someone that hasn't used it, but working on the encoders and flipping page and forth between the page buttons under them is so fast. it doesn't take long to remember where everything is. I think it might even been faster to work with than if they had extrapolated the pages into knob per function. which would be 120 knobs to cover what's under the 15 pages of parameters lol. I think electrons supposed reputation for being unintuitive is due to how complex the Octatrack is, and to some extent the silver boxes. with that out of the way, I got a boss dr202 to be a fast dirty fun drum machine, I think the model samples would be that much much better than this old boss
Looks and sounds like fun Accurate! per-step, off-shift and chanes is very cool. It's the differentiator for nowadays sequencers that cannot be too dumb anymore. Too bad no decent battery/usb power option …. and man I feel you! For years I wish to replace my perfectly fine and one of the favorite Keystep from white to black :) can't decide if I am that freak LOL
PRO: It costs less than half the price of the Digitakt CON: The sounds suck so bad it sounds like a toy just like the Elektribe 2 Sampler. The Digitakt sounds good. You get what you pay for.
@@TheTruthIsFiction boo! I was pretty disappointed in the new electribes. They don't sound as good as the first ones. I'm pretty disappointed with the Octatrack, too. It sounds AWFUL! The pickup is shit, and the fx are insulting. It is capable of satisfying quality if the samples are imported, though
Not sure about the "Sample stacking" thing, workflow wise... I'll wait and see what you'll think of it in a couple of months or so :D Thank you for the video!
Thanks for this review, it is super helpful. I did try one out, and found that the pads missed 1/8th notes even at very low bpm. It was unusable for finger drumming. Also, the Digitak pads are even less responsive than the model: samples, and are not velocity sensitive iirc.
yeah, even the sp-303 and onward seem like they would make better sample players than this (pretending for a sec that they can't also sample) but this thing does have the better sequencer.. can't pretend that the 303 made any types of waves in the sequencer world
Pros: takes 5 mins to explain. Cons: takes 10 mins to explain. ughhh ohhhhhh. But seriously I get why they made thing as most of Elektron gear is expensive. However I honestly feel you may as well just save up more and buy a Digitakt. You can do everything on Model:Samples plus more weird shit. Shout out to @Aldo who makes crazy generative music.
@@444levels9 The digitakt got no dedicated chance knob, but it sure got trig conditions. Okay the Model Samples, dose a few things the digitakt don't. But to me the digitakt seems superior in almost every way. The big selling point of the sample is it's ecseability. I dosent has as many features as the digitakt, but simplicity can be appealing for some people. And it is cheaper 😉
should have made it a metal case, should have made it black, and should have had a bigger screen, as it is with all the stickers and shit, it looks like a shitty toy, it doesn't even sample, it only plays samples , its not for me

Ian Dunn oh, they’re not comparable at all. The model: samples is a lot of fun but the MPC is just so much more powerful.
If you're not adverse to using your audio interface to sample vinyl, then perhaps not such a big deal that it doesn't sample directly.

Just HOLD rec and then press play ;)
@@hannibalactor thank it might go in now you've written it down😊
Like to see if anyone has partnered this Elektron Model Samples with another groove production device, jamming on the Samples when dawless and maybe sharing samples from an Akai MPC, NI Maschine, Roland Groovebox, Novation Circuit, PreSonus Atom, Akai Fire, Ableton Push, Novation Launchpad, Arturia Drumbrute, etc. Like someone might do if they owned a MPC X and MPC Live, one for the studio and one for portability. It could be cool.
Electribe 2 sampler is similar price and rules and samples ! and battery powered. Still skeptical of elektron stuff
great vid....speaking about "who it is for": I came after the opposite conclusion after 2 years. I am not a sample based guy, as i need a beat machine that can sequence 1-2 synth, as my main sounds come from my guitar: so i will replace my digitakt with this one :) I think if someone really needs a beat machine and that really powerful sequencer, then the model samples is hard to beat (selling around 300 nowadays and haveing the sample lock with its new firmware)
would love to have a model: synth as well!
cheers and keep up your great work.

Is it possible to set the sequence length per sample to create polyrythms?
"tracks can have independant lengths" according to Elektron - so polymetric rhythms are possible
this might be unrelated but i started dry heaving when i saw that micro usb port
PERIOD DOT.
Really waiting on a beat making video of this please bless us .
Accurate Beats would you chance (All steps) @11%?
Very good clip homes! thank you!
Brilliant info!! Thanx for that bro!! Just subbed :)
Good vid bro!
Good job!
thanks for the review :)
Did you win the bet?
Now Roland just need to release model:tr8s with their ACB modeling. mmmm..
I like the way it is built like an electribe. The new overlays reveal that about it.
PRO: It costs less than half the price of the Digitakt
CON: The sounds suck so bad it sounds like a toy just like the Elektribe 2 Sampler.
Spoiler alert! He will still like it 😉
Thanks for this review, it is super helpful. I did try one out, and found that the pads missed 1/8th notes even at very low bpm. It was unusable for finger drumming. Also, the Digitak pads are even less responsive than the model: samples, and are not velocity sensitive iirc.
It would be so much more appealing if you could at least internally resample.
yeah, even the sp-303 and onward seem like they would make better sample players than this (pretending for a sec that they can't also sample) but this thing does have the better sequencer.. can't pretend that the 303 made any types of waves in the sequencer world
instagram done.
Thanks!!
Your stage manager agrees WRT the unit being white. :) White jumps out under the lights and shows up too much. Black is discreet.

elektron = cold shit
He shall be Vegan Har Har Har!...
Geeks get more action than the Frat/Jockey's ! LOL
boo! , got ya
Rompler is the name for a Sample playback machine that doesn't Sample. :)
You can add or delete any files you want, so it isn’t quite read-only.
@@crnkmnky Good to know. Thank you.
Will follow on Instagram. ;)
I shout out a special thanks to you in my first official video! New channel name! (Miche Music) ua-cam.com/video/S6V7CFWUfhY/v-deo.html
If you have an Octatrack why would you want this?
Carl portable jammin? Cant always bring the 12 pound octatrack with you.
Make it Beige

Fisher Price intro
Pros: takes 5 mins to explain. Cons: takes 10 mins to explain. ughhh ohhhhhh. But seriously I get why they made thing as most of Elektron gear is expensive. However I honestly feel you may as well just save up more and buy a Digitakt. You can do everything on Model:Samples plus more weird shit. Shout out to @Aldo who makes crazy generative music.
not true. People look at this channel for information, stop spreading misinformation. the digitakt does not do everything the model samples does
@@444levels9 What does the Model Samples can, what the digitakt don't? Accept the one knob per function think..
@@hannibalactor more samples can be loaded into a project, the chance knob feature, and the scale per track feature are a few the digi does not have
@@444levels9 The digitakt got no dedicated chance knob, but it sure got trig conditions. Okay the Model Samples, dose a few things the digitakt don't. But to me the digitakt seems superior in almost every way. The big selling point of the sample is it's ecseability. I dosent has as many features as the digitakt, but simplicity can be appealing for some people. And it is cheaper 😉
you should eat some spinach
That's an interesting comment. I love spinach but... Why?
@@AccurateBeats because it's good 4 u
Makes total sense
should have made it a metal case, should have made it black, and should have had a bigger screen, as it is with all the stickers and shit, it looks like a shitty toy, it doesn't even sample, it only plays samples , its not for me
overpriced for sure.
are you crying for some followers ????
440 euro for a sampler who cannot imply sample anything ...LOL
galinettto netto you’re definitely missing the point of this product.
Veganism is just vanity capitalism.
why your acting like over smart, from your video we are not getting anything, pls frankly speaking
