To Model:Samples from volca sample - my 3 reasons for upgrading (talk & jam)

- Elektron Model:Samples comes, KORG volca sample goes.
This kind of upgrade is not without pain but the wish list for a better (drum) sample processing instrument was too long to be ignored: more sample memory, faster transfer, better filter & FX, more sequencer steps, to name the major points. In the audio demo which starts at 5:50 I tried to highlight some of the particular strengths of the Model which set it apart from the volca, here with a slight focus on the sample processing possibilities. What you hear is the pure Model, no external EQ, compression or FX, and also no limiter. So you may need to dial the volume knob to your preferences. And if you like what you hear and see, don't forget to subscribe.
That jokes about the stickers was the most German thing I've ever heard. Subbed!
😄
Knew I had to upgrade as soon as you showed me those stickers
😅
YES! Those stickers surely swung it for me too! Did you notice that when he got up and walked away that he had one stuck to his trousers?
Great video. Thank you. Music at the end is extremely cool. Love the fact that you go directly to the the things that matter and are not afraid to be critical. Honest useful unbiased opinion isn’t that easy to find anywhere. Much appreciated.
Many thanks for the great feedback! 😊
Very cool beats there on the Sample!
Thank you so much! Love your channel 👍
You guys are both awesome. :)
Wow, amazing cover of Idol’s “white wedding”. This video could be used to sell the model:samples. It really demonstrates the power and effects control of the instrument. Really like the dreamy electronic version of this classic song. Great cover and great work!!
Thank you so much! 😊
Thanks Pete. Love my Sample. So bright. Gave away my beats but great to learn on. Really love your videos. AL
Many thanks for the great feedback!
Informative comparison between both units and fun grooves! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the nice feedback!
beautiful demo track !!! great sound design and very cool harmonies and melodies...
Thanks a lot! 😊
The new version of the Volca Sample has USB sample transfer (but it's more expensive too, now you can get two Volcas for one Model). Never the less, having just bought a Model:Cycles and absolutely loving it, I'm tempted to add the Model:Samples, even if I already own the new Volca. Working with the Elektron is just so easy and fun. The Volca can be my travel buddy, since it runs on batteries out-of-the-box (you can use a battery pack with the Model though).
Thanks for the feedback!
no way,the 2nd version 140,-euro s,wat can you buy for 140,-?? so 2 volca s???
@@chrisvdsvuurwerkjunky7161 Not sure what your point is, but let me add that both the Model:Samples and Volca Sample V2 are great machines.
@@Goettel for the price 140,-euro does it a good job on sampling!!!!
thank you! this swap is on my mind since 2 months. you help me a lot.
😊
I tried to love the Volca. But the more I performed with it, the more I couldn't live with the 31kHZ quality. Dynamically interesting spatial samples I would spend hours producing would become unnoticeable mush once put on the Volca. If you're making lofi hip hop, then more power to you. But it really became increasingly deflating witnessing robust monster samples enter the volca and instantly sound toy'ish.
This is why I like the Volca Sample! But I have an Electribe 2 Sampler and a Elektron Model Samples as well!
Of course now we have the Pajen Beta 7 firmware for Sample, which makes chromatic play native and introduces a per part percentage resolution probability gate, to name just two. It's a massive, massive upgrade
Thanks for the info, I'll check this!
Great stuff....that sounded amazing! Brilliant!
Thanks a lot!
Very thorough comparison, thank you!
Many thanks!
Apart from the panning left to right, I quite enjoyed that ;-)
Many thanks!
this is the video what I needed. I am standing before that step (upgrade) Thank you probably you will see my techno jams will be developed by new electron model.
Peace from Poland
Thanks for the feedback!
Love this guy
😊
Man, your humor is going to kill me 😅, what about a new concept : a stand up comedy show for gear heads🙈?
😄👍
Yes, its meshmerizingly good :-D
Nice video and many good points for upgrading. Little tip for future videos: looking at the camera lens gives a more natural look than looking at yourself on the screen above it.
Many thanks for the feedback!
Waiting for your video on the model:cycles!!!
😉
This track is awesome, I want full version
Many thanks!
Awesome video
Thanks a lot!
as always nice,very nice
Thanks a lot! 😊
I got my volca sample second hand for $120, at that price I live with the buggy sample transfer. I see the model sample as more of a replacement for my notation circuit, where its randomizable sequencer can do more more than the circuit can do with its linear sequencer.
Yes, the elektron sequencer is really deep!
@@PeteMidi seems like it would work really well with beatmaker3 on the iPad
I got one a couple month ago, still learning it but I hope to be able to use its usb audio to perform live on youtube with it using open broadcaster using it to control bitwig instruments along with its own samples.
The updated Korg Volca Sample 2 has 8MB and a fast USB interface for sample transfer.
I kept both. I couldn't bring myself to lose one of the volca family. When I use volcas to jam, I use volca sample. When I jam with my Elekton's, (and other gear) I use model sample.
Yes, finally I also kept both, for similar reasons...
Listened to intro quote. 😂
Paused video to thank the gods. ⛰🌴🦕🙏
Subbed. 🤘👨💻
Many thanks! 😄
full live set on Volca Sample is possible ! ua-cam.com/video/egzUH6qC6CY/v-deo.html
Hi Pete. How was your Holliday? Going to get a samples now.
I was looking into maybe getting a Volca sample (2) and maybe a volca bass or something but i might just go with just this one.. It looks like it can do all the things i'd want the volcas for, mostly for drum machine and some supporting melodies while i do my own playing on my synthesizer. The small size and portability of the volcas seemed like a fun extra, but this sounds pretty amazing, so i'll have to think about it some more
the combination of the 2 volca s are amazing,i use them on my roland tr8,and my drumbrute in midi,i can tel you thers start a litle bit of abracadabra in this things, realy nice
I bought a used Model: Samples and sold by Volca sample 2.
Thank you very much, the video is perfect, do you think that model cycles or samples can replace a circuit? and if true, which of the two, cycles or sample?
I ask because apparently I made a wrong investment with my volcas when I was able to raise a little more money and buy something between the volcas and digitakt
In many of the forums they comment that volcas is not a serious or durable instrument.
I am not a professional musician, I am looking for something for my homestudio, something that is of better quality. I already have 5 volcas 1 bsp and a 1 novation launchkey mini mk3 , so what do you recommend? I think of model, novation, moog minitaur. TNX
I think, the circuit provides most value for the money, but because I like knobs for tweaking the sounds I prefer the electrons. But both models are completely different in terms of sound engines. Try to find out what kind of sound engine and user interface you would prefer.
Amazing⚡️
Thanks!
Still find it easy to load sounds on Sample. The Model is hard to use. I am getting there. The sounds and editing is incredible. Please can you do an in depth review. Thanks Pete.
Yes, it's on my list, several ideas for the Model, but no time at the moment ...
Very cool video as always! - I'm curious how does the Circuit compare to Model:Samples - I can't find a decent comparison of all current samplers in terms of sample length, stereo, etc
Many thanks! Yes, there are quite a lot of interesting samplers at the moment, not to forget the 1010 blackbox...
What I want to know is that can the Model: Samples sample the sound at EXACTLY the same sound quality as the original? No colouration or filtering whatsoever. If it cannot, then it's junk. This you haven't said anything about in the video. I know that the MPX16 cannot and neither can the Korg Elektribe Sampler.
@@TheTruthIsFiction do you need live sampling? If not then create your samples in your DAW and just load
I've had the Samples for awhile now. Originally got it for bigger projects. 6 banks with 16 pattern, of 128 steps per project is enough to work and record eclectically with enough space to save the good stuff.
There are only the 6 tracks but with the sequencer you can assign different samples on individual trigs.
Overall a lot of fun. Got it as a drum machine, but you can build whole songs with it.
Please make a video on how you created the jam. It was very good.
Many thanks for the feedback!
nice i like it
Many thanks!
Just on the sample rate and time model samples all the way great video
Many thanks! 😊
Got my Samples. Taking a while to learn. Sounds are really punchy and nice. What are you working on at the moment?
Oh yeah, I'm still learning the Elektron style of sequencing ... At the moment I'm preparing a video with MicroFreak and Neutron, an interesting combination.
@@PeteMidi This will be good. I have a Neutron and Crave on order. Very hard to get Behringer products here. Do you have the Model D? I think the Model Samples will go well with the Freak. I worked out the sequencer on the Freak. You have to save the patch as a new Init patch and then it is fine. Thanks Pete.
Thx, that helped
😊
Great explanation!! i will buy an elektron, how do you sample white wedding? which sofware use? and how do you load into the model samples? Thnaks in advance!!! Cheers from Argentina!!
Thanks, I prepared the sample in Ableton live using Standard midifile and ableton Instrument plugins
Hi Pete,
wie immer, Fakts und viel Wissenswertes obendrauf !
Bin schon lange Abonnentin !
Wie schneidet der Digitrakt im Vergleich ab ?
👍🌞❤✌
Many thanks!
I bought volca sample and then elektron m:s that now has sample lock! Same
Thanks for the feedback!
Sample locking and probability controlled sequencing makes the M:S incredibly powerful. Everyone feared locking would never make it down from the Digitakt to the M:S.....I think there were quite a few M:S users who may have fainted when locking finally made it to the firmware....just like the young teen girls back in the mid 1960's when they saw their first Beatles show.... ;)
No more tedious sample chains! :)
Tbh the design of the volca is 10 times sexier, plus in a volca setup (where I think it is essential) it's way more practical in terms of size and shape.
Anyway, very clean video Pete and I really enjoyed the jam !
Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I also kept the little white one for pure volca jams.
Love the Bastyl stuff too. Got the Kastle , Microgranny and dude. Want to get a delay that runs on batterys for live. Any ideas. AL
Good question, I recently got a usb 5V to 9V converter so that I can feed almost all FX (delay) pedals from a usb powerbank. I have a tc flashback x4, a cheap behringer and my line 6 M5 (very nice!). I'm still missing some suitable adapters, but it should work ...
@@PeteMidi Thanks. Just ordered a time maker from perin which has a usb. 65 pounds. From China. Will let you know if any good. Beautiful evening here in Brighton.
@@PeteMidi I love the shimmer on my Big Sky. Such a lovely sound. Use a TC Elect delay but trying to create a live set with batteries with volcas and Bastyl etc.
Thanks for the tip, I will take a look at the time maker!
Korg Monotron Delay is the ideal tool for a battery operated set up. I have one and use it all the time. I also usually take it with me in my pocket wherever I am. I also have a cheap Behringer guitar delay pedal. They're cheap, sound great and also run on batteries. Lots of guitar pedals do, not all though. For a first delay though, I'd go for the monotron, you can also get some great sounding sound FX from it too.
With Pajens update in the volca, who knows.....
Nice „hey little Sister“ EDIT 🤓 🥰Billy Idol
„White Wedding „
Exactly! 😊
I upgraded to the samples a few weeks after the volca. Best decision yet! Now I don't know if I should keep it and use them together or sell it ?
I kept mine, but to be honest, I did not use it the past 12 months...
@@PeteMidi I feel like I'm on the same path with mine lol besides feeling betrayed by Korg the Samples feels like a blindfold has been lifted lol
Can tape actually be used to store Volca samples or is it just a metaphor?
You can, in principle, it's modulated audio.
Hi Pete, Thanks for this. Sampling is new to me so your video has been helpful. My interest lies more in the direction of ambient sounds. I’m definitely too old for dance beats LOL. I have a question: Does the Model: Samples have a greater capability as a musical sound shaper? To me the Volca Sample is more a drum machine. Grateful for your advice. John
Many thanks for the feedback! I really like filter of the model and the built-in reverb, in my opinion well suitable for sound design and ambient tracks!
Thanks for this comparative review, I've been contemplating this "upgrade" as well, but the Volca does have one vital feature the Model:Samples lacks (as far as I know)- the mini sync jacks. Is it even possible to sync the Model with something like a Microfreak or NTS-1?
Yes, it should work with midi clock sync in both cases.
u never heard of midi?
I like the volca sample rate. can the model play at low rates?
@Akai Dan the internal playback sample rate is fixed at 48 Khz.
@@PeteMidi If the samples is already low then will it sound like the volca? More grainy
@Akai Dan Yes, if you record with a lower sample rate, in principle you will have all artefacts, say reduced frequency range & aliasing. The upsampling (to 48kHz) that is applied by the elektron transfer software before transmission does not remove these artefacts.
@@PeteMidi thanks man
how does it work that you let loose at 7:43 and the track starts?
There is now a Volka 2, that has usb interface and more memory.
Yes, definitely an improvement, but a bit late...
@@PeteMidi agreed! Definitely too little too late
@@PeteMidi Would you have made the upgrade if you had owned the Sample 2?
The Samples has also had major updates addressing the criticisms Pete highlighted. With Sample Locks, you can now trigger 16 samples per track. With 6 tracks, you can now simultaneously play up to 96 samples per pattern vs the Volca's 10.
could I sync the Model:Samples tempo to a Behringer Poly D?
Yes, midi clock sync should work.
I often use 15 - 30 samples in one peace... what will i do with hunderd and thosands of samples? 10 tracks on VSample appears like more then MSamples, but sample locks makes big difference. MSamples can play samples chromaticly but Vsample can do also, after Pajen firmware hack. In my opinion VSample is great as a part of a larger setup when MSamples is compact groovebox.
How about the model vs the sp404?
well they added a usb port on Sample 2 and some MB of memory in addition... What else can you ask for. Right?
Another good explanation and demo....I'm going to save up for the Digitakt though! Want to sample on the fly, and the screen is much better.....plus overbridge and 8 track midi sequencing
Thanks, I took the Model because of the sound editing interface, say the knobs. In all other points the digitakt is superior.
@@PeteMidi had a digitakt, most boring piece of kit you can buy.. sold it, bought a model:samples, the knob per funciton is much better for live
Bit of a beginner her.e, would this play well with a mini brute 2s? I’m tempted ......
I think so.
I wanna start with the same stuff, samples+brute 2s
They are basically throwing Model Sample at you these days
Ah If only they had a Sampling feature!
can you trigger samples from midi?
i want to use keystep pro to trigger samples
Yes, you can. The midi implementation of the model is really good.
Very nice. Still not sure if you liked model or not.
Thanks! I really like the Model for the sound and the nice interface to the sound engine. With respect to the sequencer I'm a bit undecided at the moment because I have to look up very basic things in the manual and in some cases I'm not sure whether it's a bug or a feature. Ask me again in a few weeks ;)
@@PeteMidi what about now? One month after ;)
Sorry Micael, I can not report much more so far - when I was trying out the sequencer features like sample lock I was just interrupted by the arrival of the MicroFreak ... But I can say that I like the Arturia-type sequencer interface much more than the Elektron-type which seems a bit too tricky for me. So I'm afraid I will not become an Elektronaut 😉
@@PeteMidi arturia doesnt have a samples still right? That would be a Nice ideia in fact!
Yes, that could be interesting - considering the hybrid architecture of the MicroFreak, it's not unlikely that they go into this direction ....
What an amazing sound. Are these built in sounds or did you create these yourself?
Many thanks! For the drum sounds I started from the factory samples, the other sounds/samples are self-made.
Not sure why storage is so small on the Volca. We're in 2020 and storage so cheap that it almost feels like Korg went so minimalist almost as a a purely aesthetic choice.
I guess it's because of the utilized micro controler, in fact not the best hardware design, at least for a sampler...
Matches the transfer speed with its 80s style acoustic modem?
Small memory for slow transfers. Dial up, and download those 3 floppies worth of data.
Awesome stuff what's the BPM on the track please
Many thanks, it's 150 bpm
And what about the circuit rhythm? Is that your next sampler?
No, I recently decided for the MPC ONE, and that's it...
Topless model , nice beats.
😊Thanks!
Hello Peter. Elektron Model or Korg Electribe?
Hi, difficult question! The Electribe Sampler has some important advantages: 4(!)x voices and more than 2x tracks, SD-card storage expansion and sampling input (stereo!). But it only has less than half(!) of the sample RAM (overall sample length) and I prefer the user interface of the model (no parameter jumps or "catches"!). So far I have not used the full RAM capacity of the model, because I usually combine it with other gear (synths). Taking this into acount, I'm not completely sure if I would decide for the model again. Try to compare the workflows, they are rather different. The model is more a drum machine, the Electribe more of a "workstation". Hope this helps ...
@@PeteMidi Yes it helps me, thanks!
Any plans to update this with the Sample V2?
Not at the moment, I'm so far saturated with sample-based devices...
@@PeteMidi I understand. Thank you for all the great videos! I really enjoy your presentation and knowledge!
Sample loading is much easier on the Volca Sample 2 via its USB port.
which volca match the best with the Samples?
My choice for combination with model samples would be volca fm
I seem to remember something about, The Model
Sie ist ein Model und sie sieht gut aus... Something like that anyway.
😄👍
Hi, did you wrote that track?
Melody and chords are from Billy Idol - white wedding 😉
Curious to hear more detail. So did you start with the melody and then create your own samples and then feed them to Model:Samples? ...or are these samples long live clips from the original that are then remixed. Cool tunes!
Tiny knobs! I'll get my coat...
The volca has one indispensable advantage - it has a “sound”. Ah yes, and the analog isolator on the master. It’s the best volca and future classic.
Yes, that's right, the volca has a unique sound, but whether I like it or not, is another question. The analog isolator is nice, but as it applies to all parts simultaneously, I only used it in rare cases.
Pete Midi it’s a dj style effect, perfect for performace. Sound is great as well, better than vanilla sounding box such as the Elektron. Cheers
Yeah, that's a good point, thanks!
Turn the Volca down to 10BPM. You'll have a 10 voice drone machine. I'd never sell this lil gem.
I will keep the little white one - at a save place 😊
I would be more interested if I hadn't plunged into MPE. Interesting note that the volca sample works with MPE based controllers the roli block actually will map to every midi channel on the volca beats so I use a roli block to finger drum my beats live. For me the battery on the volca is a big deal, also step jump is a big deal. However with the LFO on the model you can get really really close to the sound of 90s samplers like the ensoniq mirage and asr10.
Many thanks for the info! MPE is really cool, I'm thinking about options to use it in my jams. In fact, the Model LFO is extremely useful!
@@PeteMidi yeah I wouldn't replace my volca with the model but I'm very interested in the lfo and filter my first sampler in 1990 was the ensoniq mirage what most modern samplers miss is the power of the filter and lfo.
@Brian Redfern my first sampler was a Sequential Circuits Prophet 2002, so it seems that we have a similar history ;)
That tiny screen, though... disproportionate to the unit size. Be interesting to see whether 1010's new Blackbox sampler blows this out of the water. Really nice screen there.
1010 blackbox: really interesting instrument ...
The black box will, but they arent really comprable as the black box is 2x as expensive
cool like,,.-
😉
can you play both into ableton
Yes, via audio interface... But model can also be used with usb audio, no need for an additional interface
I love this new machine but I find the screen far too small. It also looks unfinished.
Yes, compromise due to price, but for me no limitation.
You can do you own thing. Check out what Cuckoo has done with his: ua-cam.com/video/ostiicL8h7o/v-deo.html
But there's virtually no menu digging at all on this design. I hardly ever look or need the screen, unlike every other electron model.
Do you think the volca has more low end?
No, I don't think so.
Ok cool. Thanks for the reply. That’s what I heard.
It has slightly less high end due to the 32khz sample rate, which I suppose gives the impression of a slightly bassier sound.
lol Pete is the ultimate anti GAS rep.
Get a piece of gear ONLY to replace a piece of gear.
Of course, getting rid of the piece you're replacing is the tough part...
Thank you for video! Yes, 4mb volcas is like a joke. But 6ch vs 10vh? No. Thats is another joke and reason why i will not use Electron.
You can use 16 samples per track (with sample locks) on the Elektron, though. So it's 96ch v 10ch.
1GB vs 4mb.
Model: Samples is a downgrade in terms of sample playback? Dang.
Yes, six tracks/parts is not that much and I guess that for many potential upgraders this might be a no-go ...
@@PeteMidi All I can say is I love the Digitakt. I think once you have a chance to see what can be done with changing the sample on each step can do in terms of creating sound density. There are so many creative ways to use the sound engine in combination with the sequencer that I don't think I will run out of new ideas for a long time. I am curious to see how the model samples works for you, coming from a different workflow.
@Robert Syrett I understand why the Digitakt has so many fans, it's a very well-designed machine. For me, only the user interface wasn't that attractive. But some features of the Digitakt I really miss in Model, for example switching between different samples via midi control changes.
@@PeteMidi firmware updates will add new features. I think that may be one of them, although I am unsure. I also have an octatrack because I thought I needed more features, but the digitakt ended up being the sweet spot. I do wonder how the interface changes will affect the results.
Robert, yes I have some hope that there will be a firmware update, that will bring the midi implementation closer to the Digitakt ...
White Wedding ?
Yeah, exactly! 😊
@@PeteMidi Ha i thought so , nice demo :-)
5 track sequencer ? LOL quiet weak this elektron....
Hey, you forgot one, there are six (6) tracks/parts ;)
@@PeteMidi exact.....
Do your homework You can change the sample on the model samples per step that gives you just per one track a lot lot possibilities. Volca is a no match for this.
Anyway the volca haves its own low fi.sound which is nice
A volca stretched out lol

Hatte ich durchaus überlegt, habe mich aber dann für die größere Reichweite entschieden ... Mittlerweile gibt es auf YT von allem und in (fast) allen Sprachen zu viel ;)
Mmm not convinced
I've always disliked that song until now.
