I love this dude. He might be the most chill person I've ever seen on YT doing music videos. Just got my Model Samples as my first groovebox and I'm pumped. Looking forward to learning this thing.
I thought I knew this machine inside out, boy was I wrong. Something as simple as using chance to have a note only repeat on a 4th without having to use another pattern just made my year. Can’t thank you enough for this!
A tip of mine for using Cycles or Samples boxes... Don't use velocity at all for volume, instead use velocity to control pan position & turn off any velocity for volume/level controlling it. It's just as easy to apply volume/level edits on these boxes with a parameter lock on steps in a sequence. If you assign velocity to panning position & control. All 6 tracks will have an easy way to pan steps in their sequences for each track. Turn your velocity mod source to pan & depth of it to max +63... Turn down the volume/level depth to 0. Then swing each tracks pan positions to hard left. Now a velocity value of 64 is centre pan. 0 velocity is hard left pan & 127 is hard right. Velocity how I pan things on every track without having to waist a lfo as a panning mod.
@True Cuckoo thought u may be interested in this tip for using velocity as a panning trick. I use velocity to control pan position now on every track... On both of my Model Cycles & Samples boxes. I prefer to edit trig parameter locks for levels per step using locks via the volume/dist knob. The velocity then can be very effective & more commonly most resourceful to make good at pan position duties... you just have to dial off any velocity to control levels, & if you turn the velocity pan depth to +63. You have to go to the tracks volume & panning page. Then turn the tracks pan position hard left. Now 127 velocity is hard right pan. 0 velocity is hard left & 64 velocity is center pan. Watch your beats go Cuckoo now.
Ah yes, an excellent introductory tutorial assuming zero knowledge of the product. This is far better than reading the manual! Elektron should be paying you for these.
Just got this beast as my first drum machine. This review is amazing. I was able to dive right in after just thirty minutes of watching. Also, I love how musical this thing is for such a cheap price tag. Velocity, crazy delay, chromatic tuning, reverse button, distortion with volume... all super intuitive and accessible. And some of the samples are really amazing and complex. I feel there’s still a bunch to learn but with this review and two hours of time I already built some patterns I was really happy with. Thanks for this great review of a musical drum machine. Both are rare!
Love this little machine. Not as deeep as other Elektron gear, but can still do a hell of a lot. Paired with a good analog, and you’re pretty much good to go. Classic.

I bought M:S to solve a problem - i sit down at my DAW and am overwhelmed with options. It is dead on for purpose - i have it and a uno synth and a couple of batteries on my coffee table an i dunno if ive had as much fun just jamming in a long time.

Waiting on delivery of my Model:Samples and wanted to get up to speed ahead of time. This demo rocks! A bit long? Yes. Worth my time? Absolutely! Went through many vids but this is pretty much the only class you need on this piece of kit. Many thanks Mr. Cuckoo!
Cuckoo, thanks man! This is an amazing tutorial and you are an excellent tutor! I've just bought a Model Samples and although I'm one of those people who read the whole manual, it's a lot to take in, but you cover pretty much everything in a practical way. So I'm ready to get stuck in already. It's such a fun machine!!!
I've had my Samples for about a week and your video has been infinitely more helpful than the manual. Thanks very much! I'm really enjoying it a lot - it's my first Elektron (and drum machine!) experience, and after watching your tutorial I've been able to come up with a handful of fun things. Thanks again!
35:00 this is something I've just started realizing before watching this video and was a driving reason I got the Yamaha CP73. Being able to do all of this live and dawless makes recording or going into my DAW so much better. Gets rid of post-work and lets me be organic and expressive.

Cuckoo is right, Elektron have carefully curated absolutely excellent samples, which can serve as a good base of bread and butter samples that you can add you own samples to.
Thanks a lot, man! Very helpful tutorial, the best that I’ve seen. Actually I’ve watched it for 3 times - when I bought it, after couple weeks and again after 3-4 months with it, and I guess not for last time) it has soooo much power inside this sweet “dandy box”!
Awesome tutorial! You really have a gift for clear and practical explanations :) You are a great teacher, thank you so much for your tutorials, so thorough and efficient! Cheers
I’ve only just got my hands on one of these cuckoo and not yet had much time on it, so your video is amazingly helpful. I’m only part way through it as I have to be up very early but I’ll be back for the remainder tomorrow. Cheers. Lee
Seriously. I’ve been craving a Samples since I first saw it. I’m looking at Electribe2 and a few other grooveboxes. This walkthrough is making me _really_ want it.
Yeah definitely that’s the mindset. And then if you create your own samples, you can put many different sounds in one sample, and change the sample starting point, and sample length, to play different sections of the sample per trig.
@@truecuckoo oMG start point. you are so right. i have already put in many drum loops ./ . . .those can be whole kits as well. i computer said 1GB, i uploaded it says 6% full . what the heck ??
This is by far the best explanation of the Model Samples! You helped me a lot to get to grips with it - way more helpful than studying the manual, really. So, thank you, cuckoo!🙏🖖
fantastic video, I didn't know this groovebox ... but I understood everything immediately, compliments very clear explanations, the number 1 I fell in love with this machine.
This tutorial is insane. I will have to watch it a few more times because a lot of the functions in the device are very subtle. Mostly the ones around recording, patterns and saving. Also i'm impressed he TC can punch in beats so effortlessly, those pads are insanely stiff.
Essential, thank you sir! I was ready to toss this thing back into it's box. But your somewhat unorthodox style made things much more immediate while staying instructional!
Thank you for the tutorial. Just got mine yesterday. First time I ever use a Elektron. It's still very difficult to master , but I feel I will get there some day . Don't know when that day is tho... I will need to watch your video a couple times before I get it.
Lovely. I only have good things to say about the 2600 one, which was like 399 in the u.s. recently. I mostly just sample it into the sp404 since I like to make beats on the move and it's just to chunky a boy to move around 😅 but it packs a punch with its three massive oscillators.
Been quiet your way CC. I would love to see you use the Model with a Circuit and utilize the midi out of the Model into the Circuit and explore the ways with midi in and out of each along with settings and interesting ideas would be a cool vid. I have started toying with all the options with these 2 and it is a rabbit hole....
Thanks Cockoo for all the amazing videos you make. Its a pleasure seeing you deep dive into all the different devices! However, i finally got my hands on a Model:Samples but the Velocity Sensitivity is a bit low on my device. In your video it looks much more chilled like you play your M:S. Did you made any adjustments on the internal components of the device or do i just missed out the right configuration setting?
not even out a month .. an already a Cuckoo video .. whoopWhoooop. PS: i love this machine. already put some kits on it. that's a neat trick with the suffixes!
I’m still on the fence about this machine. It’s definitely fun but there are 2 things I’m waiting for. 1. Battery handle. If it’s really expensive then I’m not interested. 2. A phone app to transfer samples I would love to have this as a living room jam piece that I can load samples off my phone. I sample a lot of stuff off my phone so it would be very convenient and quick
Iyem Adog I figured as much but I like the idea of the handle for portable reasons. I generally don’t like a lot of cords to hook up when I pull out a portable machine. If I only need headphones then it’s definitely more usable in my perspective.
Nice content... regarding your mirror, you should try using an additional mirror to get a different angle of your face so it does not feel like we are laying down looking up at you.. something like a periscope.. would that work?
Velocity pads sound half as loud to me as sequencer trigs. The volume can be controlled from two buttons and from the menu, but I did not find a difference in volume. When I hit the main velocity pads, turn my amp up loud and then play the factory track, the speaker wants to jump into my lap and wake up the tenants 🙂
Great video Cuckoo! I dont own one and will not get one but I really like the machine. I think this is going to get a lot people into making electronic music..
Hola gente, necesito que me ayuden con un problema, mí model samples no graba en vivo. Al apretar el botón de grabar y hacer sonar los track no quedan grabados en la secuencia. No se escuchan ni parpadean, alguien sabe a qué puede deberse? Muchas gracias
Great demo, thank you very much Cuckoo. My question is if you load your own samples then you have to delete some of the existing ones? Or the unit has enough space to add new samples, keeping at the same time the factory samples?
Very nice video! I have a question. I 'm thinking about buying it for a specific task, playing it live with a Jamstick plus. Of course, the midi routing is via Ableton. My question: is it possible to play with the midi controller 2 tracks at the same time? For instance, I wanna play a synth sample that mimic a fake industrial guitar, but Model Samples out are mono, I wanna this sample on both sides of the stereo field.Think about heavy metal guitars, mixed at the sides. So, i figured out a situation like this: playing 2 tracks at the same time and then first track hard panned right, second one same thing left. Can I have this kind of setup with the model samples? Many thanks!
Great one , this really dust up many capabilities of this machine , Now 2020 , i saw also your customizing it , very great if you can do a little video with some capabilities since the latest update ... I still don't have it but very interested in it , your video tipped the scales for the good for those who were still wondering obout getting it . Will check your website , Thanks !
Honest question. Why buy this instrument vs buying CR8 from Wave? Is there a main difference? I know CR8 doesn’t have the ability to create sequences , but you will use your DAW far that.
There’s always a huge difference when comparing dedicated hardware or computer software. For me it’s not about comparing features, it’s about the musical workflow and the hands on experience. And I always envision myself performing live and having fun with the hardware instruments. Not so much with the computer. With a hardware instrument the workflow becomes muscle memory, and it’s fun to perform with when you’re so tight with the instrument. It’s a nice sampler instrument on a budget. For sheer daw production, you can definitely come a long way with software, and cover more bases, and refine everything with precision daw automation. It’s two different approaches.
Hello! Does anyone know if there's a way to play an entire backing track with the Model Samples like you can with the Octatrack? I've always been anti backing tracks (prefer to perform my live set with real instruments whenever possible) but it seems like it'd be such a nice thing to lean on if something goes awry with my vintage Casio.
Also, thank you Cuckoo for this thoughtful and detailed tutorial! You made my overwhelmed brain feel so much more excited about this piece of gear! So grateful for the time you put into this.
I was wanting to quickly like in live mode add a sample. I was wondering if I record a sample on say a korg kaoss kp3+ live, can I then move that on to the Model:Samples directly?
Best way to get all the samples from M.S onto the computer ? Would like them in Ableton backed up properly labeled/organized. Also, would then put on an SD card to load up in my Morphagene. Please help, thanks a lot !
47:30 To make LFO play once, just as Envelope, you can choose ENV LFO type from LFO menu, check manual, p.33
Ah, good!

Also, if you hold down the lfo button and twist the desired parameter, the destination and depth will automatically map. I’m really hoping they’ll add an attack parameter (perhaps as a func + decay) - I’m tired of wasting my one lfo for longer scw attacks.

Lovely. I only have good things to say about the 2600 one, which was like 399 in the u.s. recently. I mostly just sample it into the sp404 since I like to make beats on the move and it's just to chunky a boy to move around 😅 but it packs a punch with its three massive oscillators.
Hello early birds. Please be patient while the HD is being compressed by UA-cam’s server.
no problem brother, good work... never look videos in 360p but you are so genius and fun... so i don't get it. just u said... :)
big merchandising in the back, hi hi hi
Great explanation, love the interface on the Models.
Been quiet your way CC. I would love to see you use the Model with a Circuit and utilize the midi out of the Model into the Circuit and explore the ways with midi in and out of each along with settings and interesting ideas would be a cool vid. I have started toying with all the options with these 2 and it is a rabbit hole....
thanks cuckoo you golden human bean
Finally THE tutorial!!
Thx very much man! That is exactly what u need if u are new with this crrrazy thing!
I’m still on the fence about this machine. It’s definitely fun but there are 2 things I’m waiting for.
1. Battery handle. If it’s really expensive then I’m not interested.
2. A phone app to transfer samples
I would love to have this as a living room jam piece that I can load samples off my phone. I sample a lot of stuff off my phone so it would be very convenient and quick
It can actually be USB powered already with a simple powerband and USB to 5v cable
I’m with you on the phone transfer app

I figured as much but I like the idea of the handle for portable reasons. I generally don’t like a lot of cords to hook up when I pull out a portable machine. If I only need headphones then it’s definitely more usable in my perspective.
You really made a great video to show this device! Thanks for your work
Great explained!. I've learned a lot about how to use model samples. Thank's
What a great video!
I'm eagerly waiting for my M:S, hopefully this week...
Great video Cuckoo! I dont own one and will not get one but I really like the machine. I think this is going to get a lot people into making electronic music..
Thanks, yeah I’m with you 100%
is it possible to press and hold record and move knobs to create automation for each track?
This video very well may have convinced me to try this little fella out
So valuable and thorough. Thank youuuu!
Thanks very much for all your advise ! Can you please make a video specialize on a each ondition locks ? Thanks very much
Plot twist:
Cuckoo is a serial killer and he chooses his victims depending on what his hair picks up when he’s walking around.
I think he ate bobeats
I’m joking tho, first time seeing you cuckoo. Thanks for the thorough and professional tutorial. Very clear and concise.
Thanks a lot for this. Really. First time I watch a video on youtube over an hour, and escpecially being interested all the time. GREAT FKN JOB!
the delay is mega awesome
Many thanks! this is a great tutorial! i'm still waitin' fot part 2 ;
-)
Thanks a lot for that briliant tutorial! ;)
pretty nice review man! thank you so much)
very nice tutorial ! big thanks
I think it has 1GB of sample storage, and 64MB RAM memory for loading samples.
My favourite parts are when he says DOOSH! lol
Unintentional ASMR
Thank You MAster, You save my life :) respect and greetings :)
This is so awesome - thanks for sharing!
Great one , this really dust up many capabilities of this machine , Now 2020 , i saw also your customizing it , very great if you can do a little video with some capabilities since the latest update ... I still don't have it but very interested in it , your video tipped the scales for the good for those who were still wondering obout getting it .
Will check your website , Thanks !
excellent tutorial!!
I saw your tutorial , now i'll buy it. 🤤😂
