Yes you're right it works with it. I was a little bit confused because Advanced Wood is a procedural map and cannot take uv mapping but this is another issue. Your method works fine thx :)

Pity that we cannot use Advanced Wood material instead of bitmaps...
No reason why it wouldn't work. I just tried the same workflow but replaced my bitmaps with advanced wood and it worked as expected.
Make sure "Show Incompatible" is activated in the Material Map Browser and that "Legacy 3ds Max Support" is enabled in the Render settings Panel.
