  • 5x-Grammy Winner Cassidy Turbin (Beck, Keyon Harrold) explains why he doesn't stress out about what preamps to use with his Sphere L22 microphone.
    Learn more about the L22: www.uaudio.com/microphones/sp...
    Cassidy can choose from a wide palette of sonic preamp options at his own studio Willowcrest Recorders in LA. His vintage Yamaha console provides different flavors on its input channels, but Cassidy also turns to his classic Neve preamps quite a bit. Whatever the choice may be, he finds that he always can rely on the Sphere mic models to deliver their unique sound regardless of the preamp.
    The two-channel Sphere L22 requires a pair of preamp channels and there are some workflow benefits to using digitally controlled preamps. But it's absolutely ok to use the mic with good old continuous gain preamps as longs as you ensure the same gain on both channels. Our simple and fast calibration routine provides a quick way to ensure this.
    The Sphere L22 system consists of a dedicated, dual-channel microphone and its software counterpart, the Sphere plug-in. The exacting models incorporate transient response, harmonics, proximity effect, and multi-dimensional polar response. Thanks to our exhaustive and curated study of classic microphones, the Sphere system currently brings the soul of 34 of the world's most revered microphones to life. The striking accuracy and sonic results have convinced owners from home recordists to seasoned industry veterans, such as Joe Chiccarelli, Billy Bush, and Allen Sides.

    How do you connect this to mic pres other than the Apollo?
    It requires stereo and most only have one XLR input. I want to connect this to my Neve portico 5017 but it doesnt seem possible

    I’m really thinking about getting this mic! I use a heritage audio 73 pre going into a 76 comp. does this mic require dual preamps in order for you to use it?

    Been loving my L22 direct to Apollo but now I'm looking to use an outboard EQ and compressor unit before the Apollo but the stereo inputs pose a challenge.
    Doesn't seem possible without having a stereo pre, stereo eq and stereo compressor -> stereo input of audio interface connection chain.
    Does that sound about right? Would that defeat the purpose and nullify the mic modeling once it arrives to the Sphere plug-in after going through that much processing?

      How would the designer know the eq curve and amplification character of your pre? You have to give a neutral signal as flat as possible to get the mic model you want. On the other hand, use you ears and you’ll find some unexpected beauties like the AKG 414 nylon and CMV 563 that just work so fabulously. Also experimenting with the patterns and proximity give fabulous sounds.

    Is he referring to external pres? How much does this affect the emulations? Has to be super clean, right? I have a Neve DPA and have recently ordered the Townsend. I would love to use my Neve, but it would probably have to be dialed all the way down.

      Unless you deliberately overdrive the preamps, there are no negative effects on the modeling. For Cassidy, he loves the Sphere L22 regardless of the preamps but he certainly will use different flavors. Give it a go with your Neve DPA and let us know how you like it! - Julian

      @@Townsendlabs Julian! Quick question regarding this. So let's say I have a Neve dual preamp and i use it on my L22 ...will the preamp color the L22 the same way it would any other mic?

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  3 роки тому +2

      @@manuellujan5625 yes, exactly. So it's essentially the same thing as if you had run the original vintage mic through that preamp. There are lots of folks out there who use dedicated analog preamps and I personally have gotten great results with a pair of api 512c preamps. But of course the Neves are wonderful, too, and they have the advantage that you have a stepped gain control. - Julian
