This has got to be the most relaxing audio gear review ever made... like watching Bob Ross paint...

Thanks so much for this. I had my first session with a singer/songwriter and an L22 last weekend. This video let me set up the mic in minutes and we got an absolutely amazing sound. One thing I learned is that you have to play with the placement and panning a bit to get a balanced signal, but what I did was duplicate the track and switched the left and right channels on the duplicate. It sounded great. It was just a working demo that we did really quickly (thanks to the L22 and your video), and I'm not sure if I'l do that same thing in a final production, but it's worth playing with it. The Sphere plugin is like a whole instrument in its own right, isn't it? Thank you again. Both I and the artist were blown away by the quality we got from just throwing down some comforters on the floor and setting up the Sphere in his living room. I don't think there is any other mic in the world that I could have used to do that whole session and get anywhere near the results. I only wish I had like 5 more of them!

Great stuff as always Doug. I just bought this Mike and I adore it. I'm a singer songwriter and record myself so it has just made my world so much easier and the sound so much deeper and fuller. I prefer to sing and play live while I record so I just bought a second one :)

In stereo mode be careful to think about which side is which, in your comparison you were essentially putting a SDC on the body and a ribbon on the neck, whereas most engineers would do it the other way around. It's confusing because we tend to think of the visual plug-in setup from a guitarist's perspective (left being the neck and right being the body) but in actual fact it's the other way around, AKA the engineer's perspective. Not saying it sounded bad and unorthodox methods often lead to great results, but just something to be aware of!

Good luck finding an M 49 that sounds that good! Thanks for the detailed video. I really enjoyed your playing and model choices, though I'm awfully curious to hear how the Soyuz 017 would sound. I think it would flatter that particular guitar tremendously. That's the one complaint I have about the L22; what you perfectly termed "decision paralysis" in your article. There are just SO MANY sumptuous sounding combos available, and it can be a challenge to commit. The plugins really do offer an entire creative palette of their own, and you did a wonderful job of covering the basics. I'll be recording a singer/songwriter next week, so I appreciate the simple tips on how to position the L22 in order to flatter the guitar in the mono vs. stereo modes. I'm planning on recording it both ways. This is my first time using the L22 on an acoustic guitar and it seems that's best done with a slightly different strategy to what I normally use when tracking guitar, so thanks again!

    Wow!!
    Super cool thing!!!
Super cool guitar, super cool guiutar playing, and super cool video review!!
    Wow!
    ...
Maybe the only downside is the probability to then spend too much time playing with all the endless combinations, etc., but still really cool!!

This is fascinating technology....the first mic I've seen with this capability. The closest thing I can think of that's similar yet still not the same thing would be guitars like Godin's multiac. They modeled different guitars with several different mics and incorporate that tech into a guitar. So, really not the same at all. :-/ It is helpful in both live and studio settings though. Whereas I wouldn't want to use this mic live. Thanks for the great demo.

Good review. I have a feeling though that the "on dist" and "off dist" dials define at what distance the real world source was at and setting it to what it was in the real world helps the software flatten out the response based on that if you have it set for flat response correction. I might be wrong though as I've not used that function myself much yet :)

I have the L22 and want to get an acoustic guitar. Is it better to get a guitar with a pickup or to record into the L22? Guitar budget is about $300 unless there’s a good reason to spend more.

i generally prefer to record into a mic. DI acoustic is kind of crummy! but is good for live sometimes.

@@Rawrtato I ended up getting a nice Alvarez guitar. I aimed to get one without a pickup, but it has a pickup because the ones without pickups were few and far between. It works out though, because it has a handy tuner built in as well which I like more than I thought I would. I agree with you, the L22 recording much better than plugging in.

Don't forget it takes up 2 pres, not one. Double the price but you get a lot of choices of mic coloring to suit a recording need. Seldom does audio gear get so many glowing reviews and not one negative review I could find. Thinking about getting one to use with my Universal Audio studio. I am already all in with the UA platform so $1500 is not that big of deal to make use of my studio centered UA equipment. Hope I can ditch a couple 4 figured microphones if I do buy it. But I have tons of old gear I just can not part with I do not use. Not yet.

I recently purchased the L22 and was extremely impressed regrettably however I decided to return it. For me the deal killer was the fact that at the end of the day you don't own anything tangible with this microphone only a selection of software plugins that may, or may not be supported 5 years down the line and without it software this microphone becomes little more than an expensive paperweight

why is this exact comment copy and pasted in other L22 reviews? And your website in your profile goes to a buncha bullshit advertisements.
