  • My newest 10 meter all mode radio for my mobile. I loved the President Lincoln original back in the day, and now I have the updated II+ model, capable of 10 and 12 meters. Great radio, check out the video to see more about it.

    I got one that I used in my van for a while. I used a FireStik Mach-10 antenna with it. It is specifically made for the tech SSB portion of 10 Meter. Since I was only a tech until yesterday, it was a good setup. I had a QSO over 800 miles away on the 4th of July. It'll be set up differently when I get another vehicle. Hopefully soon.

    Hi Eric. I got this about a year ago to replace the Realistic HTX-10. Fantastic radio! I have it set up in my mobile connected to the cigarette lighter and a K40 mag mount on the roof of my 2008 Kia Sportage. I've made a great deal of contacts. I love the radio. After I brought home my FT-101E I learned that the previous owner wired up the 11 Meter band (Criminal Band) and made another silly modification. I fixed both issues, but still need to find new tubes for the final amp. Since the time that I acquired it, it's value has gone way down (like most electronic stuff) and the value of the 1911 that I traded for it has gone way up.

    Man I'm from S. FL and grew up doing CB and participating when the skip would open up. Started with a Uniden Pro 810E and ran a Antron 99 and then an IMax 2000 and picked up a Magnum Delta Force "Export Radio". Loved it. I'm just like you I'm an extra class these days and don't even have a real HF rig, but I love these President/10m radios for some reason. I recently sold my Magnum Delta Force and now I'm wishing I didn't. It was in mint condiiton too. I live in Europe and I had the first version around 30 years ago and even back then it was one of the best if not the best radio in the segment. It was a refurbished one with warranty and I also had it modified by professionals. It had adjustable and upgraded output power and a wider frequency range. I sold it for the same price as I bought it, that's another nice thing about these radio's, they keep their value. To this day I regret that I sold it.

    Love this radio, I’ve had uk doctored into it so I got 80 channels fm, am, and ssb. However, a good friend of mine went in and converted into a rig covering 25 to 30 meter bands. I’ve got copies all over Europe and the USA, even heard some Australians on a good day.
    I totally respect you licences people, I’m just one of those that are experienced and never mess about, in fact quite the opposite. I have good friends on ham/cb radios. I just haven’t got the brain power to learn for my ticket. Played pro rugby in the uk and Europe and I seem to have a small bit of concussion problems which is hindering my memory and learning abilities. I enjoy it anyway.

    I am an old Ham, but never forgot my CB roots, so i use and enjoy both. As for you Hams with the negative comments, you are the very reason Ham is dying and CB is still alive and well. Instead of arrogance, try mentoring CB'ers into the hobby and assist them with passing the test, otherwise, you will all end up old and cranky and chatting with others like yourself about your arthritis and other boring ills....oh, i forgot, you are already doing that!

      @@michaelricketts3651 Don't know if Art will respond to your query but I bought my Lincoln II+ about three years ago and I still love it and use it every day to talk to local friends on 10, 11 & 12 meters via phone (voice) and digital modes (PSK31, RTTY & OLIVIA). Audio reports I get constantly tell me the audio output is excellent. There are several local people using the Lincoln II+ on 11-meters and their audio sounds excellent as well. I've encountered a few on 10 & 12-meters DX and they too sound excellent. I've yet to hear one on the air that didn't sound great. Only thing I did to mine was to restore 11-meter TX - no tweeks, power mods or other "golden screwdriver" baloney.

    • @outbacktraveller58
      @outbacktraveller58 3 роки тому

      @@ComputerLearning0 just out of curiosity, how do you restore the 11 mtr TX? That band is still allocated as CB here in Australia but the market has diminished so badly that I don't think you can even buy a new SSB radio for 27 Meg in the country. There's a few el cheapo AM only, but I certainly haven't seen an equivalent radio like this marketed here anywhere ..... and I'm actually looking for one,primarily for 10 Mx, but if if 11Mx TX was easily achievable it would be a bonus! :)

    • @ComputerLearning0
      @ComputerLearning0 3 роки тому +2

      @@outbacktraveller58 The 11-meter TX restore modification for the Lincoln II+ involves installing a single resistor on the main board. If you have the non "+" version, that is, the standard Lincoln II then it's even simpler to modify, which involves clipping a looped wired on the main board. Ultimately it all depends on which Lincoln II you have, be it the standard model or the + model. Regardless, there are a number of excellent videos posted here on UA-cam that show precisely how to perform these modifications for either version.

    • @outbacktraveller58
      @outbacktraveller58 3 роки тому +2

      @@ComputerLearning0 Thanks, mate! I ended up stumbling across a couple of said videos! In fact, I haven't used either 10 Metres or 11 Metres for an awfully long time (and you can't even purchase an AM/SSB 27 Meg radio brand new here just about anywhere) as our equivalent of the FCC "granted" CBers the 476/477 Meg band (on FM only) and. essentially, pushed most folks that way, They still have the 27 Meg allocation here for CB, but because our market is so abysmally small, and the radios have to be "type approved", the cost of approval for the tiny 27 Meg market just about put the kybosch on it. Consequently, I haven't played on that band since forever, but I've actually just ordered a Lincoln II + as because I hold an Amateur licence, I don't need to have "type approved" radios. Of course, I couldn't transmit legitimately were I to convert such a radio but .........

    My 2510 had auto squelch 35 years ago. Your Lincoln is just a 2510 with 12 meters and tone squelch. What I really miss is my Ranger 2970 DX from 2000. With one extra switch, it would go down to 22 MHz but you also had to open it up for 11 to do it. To avoid drilling a hole, I put a magnetic reed switch across the aluminum heatsink in the back. To go to 22 MHz, I shut it off, stuck the magnet to the edge flap of the top cover so it would overhang over the reed switch, turn it back on and you're there. The downside is it would always reset the memory channels and other settings but I used to like to listen to shortwave. The problem with this radio was it was sensitive to EMP spikes. My antenna was 35 feet away from a tree that was struck by lightening. My base antenna is fine but now I have a 100 watt, 28MHz always on beacon. I even pulled the transmit / receive transistors and the mic. Turn it on, full power beacon in an 8 pound boat anchor. Ranger in California said it blew the microprocessor. 😭 $295 plus labor and postage back then but now they don't even make that processor. HMMmm.

    Thank you for this review. For my mobile HAM use, the tiny frequency display (important information to me) and the large channel display (useless to me) are focusing on non-HAM users. I agree with others that Echo, PA, and Roger beep are not needed for my HAM use. Not my cup of tea, but I can see how others will like it. Again, thank you for sharing. 73 de N1DEL

    Excellent video. You answered a lot of questions about this "style" of radio. Your the first hamtuber I've seen cover these. The CB shoptubers completely avoid the ham question, but have no fear talking about the 100 watt "10 meter CBs" they sell. I'm of the opinion that
    the only "policing" of the airwaves are by arrogant authoritarian hams ( the exception not the rule, I believe most are good guys) and that federal regulators are to busy finding new ways to stifle the internet.

    Today, the 13th of June 2020, there has been an all day opening on 10 meters. This is not necessarily rare, though not very common during the solar minimum. However, 28.475LSB was extremely busy. Lower side band is a rarity on 10 meters. AM/FM/USB and CW are the modes most commonly used on 10 meters as far as I can tell. However, LSB is a rarity I have never ran across on 10 meters. I guess the legends are true. 10 meter band does have some LSB traffic. I do not have a license. I just listen in on a communication scanner. 100 kilocycles to 1.85 gigacycles all modes are available to me on this scanner. But I have no transmit abilities except on an ancient Cobra 148GTL I have had in my vehicle since 1996. I never thought I would still have that same vehicle and CB radio in it today.

    Good to see it has a CW jack (unlike some of the 'quasi' 10 meter 'export' radios out there). Now the data port intrigues me, I wonder if you can use that for packet radio, PSK31 or FT8. It would suck if that could only used for firmware updates... I think the price is within reason especially because the HTX-100 (with only CW/SSB) was originally like $249 when it came out some 30 years ago. If the price ever dipped below $200, this would be a steal.

    Well, I do use HF in my truck and UHF/VHF and the HF does have all bands on it. The main reason I have HF in the truck is for emergency communication when I go hunting, cell phones, UHF/VHF don't work in a lot of the areas I go. Having all HF bands if I need help or call for help one of the bands would be open. Having a GPS and HF I might need to contact someone in another state but at least I can get a helicopter in to pick someone or myself up.

    I really like what this radio offers and I’ve been wanting to get a new 10m radio for a while. (Currently have a RadioShack HTX-10 that I’ve had for 20years). You asked why I WOULDNT like this radio and I can only think of two things.
    1. The large 40 channel readout is too large and makes me think this is a CB first and ham second.
    2. I wish the tuning knob was a standard round knob instead of looking like a CB channel selection knob. Seems like it would make tuning around the band a little clunky.
    That being said I’m pretty sure I’m still going to purchase this radio, the price is just too good to pass up.

      The reason this radio looks like a CB is because of two reasons, #1 it's designed for mobile use (simple one hand use) and #2 it is easy to convert to 11 meter and that makes it a popular radio for truckers. (again mobile use)

    Came in late but thank you for this review. Have been looking for a good 10M rig to compliment my dual band 2M/70CM rig in the car and this looks promising. I sometimes travel 3000 miles on occasion and would be nice if there was at least receive only for 11M (ch 17/California or ch 19/elsewhere) for CB reported road conditions.

      The conversion to 11M is basically soldering in a resistor and making a configuration change via the menu. It's out there, you just have to look for it.

    Why is the squelch always open on 10m? Do you need to hear the static all the time because weak signals may not break through?

    I would love that radio (yes I’m a ham)! What I’d like better is the FCC to allow 11m on that also but with just 1-40 and set just 4 watts out. That would be fantastic for people who don’t want two radios in their vehicle.

    Just "found" this video. Skeptical for a long time, thought it was a disguised "high" power CB for truckers, which I suppose it is in a way. Couldn't figure out why the "channel" number and a frequency were displayed. With your through explanation it makes sense. This will be a future addition to my collection. Good job! Thanks and 73s

    It's Aug. '22. I just purchased a Lincoln II +. I had the radio tuned and aligned and included 11 meters. A superb performer. Add an appropriate
    amp and you've got quite the combo for broadcast. 10 meters should be open without a license. Just my humble opinion.

      A wise man once told me that a person doesn’t value something he didn’t have to work for. Under no circumstances would I ever agree to surrendering any of our spectrum to persons like you. I believe that you shouldn’t be able to purchase , modify or even possess a transceiver unless you have obtained the authority to transmit on those frequencies. There is a reason why a CB is restricted in power and licensed amateur radio operators can go as high as 1.5kw PEP. Modifying the radio to enable it to operate on frequencies it was not approved for is illegal. You want the power and spectrum but you don’t want to earn it. You want to legally use an amp? Get your license. It’s only 35 multiple choice questions. One more thing… we don’t broadcast. That’s illegal unless your a news service, AM/FM broadcast, or television station. Enjoy your day and I hope to hear you’ve earned your Call Sign one day soon.

    For some of us who are out here and who like watching your channel and are still in the learning mode about the various radios and their capabilities could you please give us a breakdown of what the FM switches are for on these type of radios thanks

    • @greyman5590
      @greyman5590 Рік тому

      Two modes of operation. You are already familiar with this but don’t remember that you are. Your classic car radio is an AM/FM receiver. AM works by modulating (varying) the amplitude of the signal or carrier transmitted according to the information being sent, while the frequency remains constant. This differs from FM technology in which information (sound) is encoded by varying the frequency of the wave and the amplitude is kept constant.
      So the FM switch on the radio would enable the radio to both listen to and transmit in the FM mode. FM mode would quieter and you would either be “in there” or you wouldn’t. AM would linger on into the fringe coverage areas.

    Wrong, wrong, wrong. :-) President is still partners with Uniden. Also not designed in the USA. President global headquarters are in France. Any President radio made in Vietnam is made in the Uniden factory. Any President radio made in China is made in the Qixiang plant. I do President's warranty work which is little to none. It's usually pretty safe to run the mic gain wide open on these. The AMC and ALC circuit attack times are rather fast so as long as the radio is stock and unmodified you won't have to worry about over modulating. Mike KC3OSD

      Back in the day, I knew I guy who loved his President Grant export radio (silver face). We did SSB almost exclusively, and it was fun, and he said that radio didn't suffer from drift nearly as much as other export rigs ( I had a Galaxy for a while and that would drift even after being on for an hour, and Uniden HR2510 which was pretty good, but it just crapped out one day for no good reason). He and I eventually each got RCI Ranger 2950 which were pretty good (I had LCD problems in cold weather), but eventually we got licenses and went to Yaesu 747GXii...no drift with that, but too expensive to keep in a car. What are some good export rigs these days for 10m-11m? I only have a couple of 2m/440 rigs anymore, but I may get back into this at some point.
