Before the solar cycle started heating up a year or two ago, you could find an old Radio shack HTX-10 25. Watt mobile 10 m rig for 100 to $150 on eBay and other used markets. Now the price has just about doubled, but it's still a great option to get started if you can find one for a low price.

Hi there sir, since I'm new on HAM, I so fortunate that a friend of mine gave me an hr2510 which I tuned the AM to 5 watts and SSB to 12 watts since finals for it is kinda hard find now a days. And what blast for newbie like me, made my maiden contact yesterday to Germany 10,000 plus km from where I'm at using only the driven element of a yagi 19 feet above ground. Conditions was great that time. Anyway, I just wanna share. DW1QEW, Philippines.

My recommendation: Save your money. Once you get $500 saved up, go to a hamfest. Do your homework and know what radio(s) you want, what they're worth, and make sure it works before you take it home.
I do have a President Lincoln and an IC-718. They get the job done. However... if I knew then what I know now, I would have went with a Yaesu 891.
The Lincoln does 10 & 12 meters (AM, FM, & SSB...also has a port for a cw key) out of the box... and with a resistor and a little soldering, it becomes a decent CB (although it's not FCC-friendly). When skip is rolling on LSB, you can make A LOT of contacts on 11m. It's an okay option if you want it for mobile. Also, I'm pretty sure that nobody ever uses the 12 meter band.
The IC-718 is an old school radio. No waterfall, no whistles, no bells, no whiz-bangs. But I've made contacts all over the place with it.

My 1st 6 months while I was still a tech, I got hooked on dx using an Anytone AT-5555N on 10m, and ran it thru a couple different homebrew antennas & a $60 Tram 1411 discone 20' up. When I was a Novice in 1979 10M was my go-to band and I worked the world with the 20-watts output of my TenTec Century 21 CW-only. When got my General in 1981 I had to mow a lot more lawns to get a phone rig and bought a used Kenwood TS-520 in which I worked the world on the 35-mile drive to community college with my magnetic mount converted CB antenna 1/4-wave or at home on the farm with my 3-Ele Yagi I converted from a Radio Shack CB antenna in which I got the conversion plans from CQ Magazine. I loved 10M so much I had trouble even trying 20M because as a Novice we were forbidden to transmit on it and developed an attitude of not being worthy and thus did not know what great propagation it had, LOL. 15 years ago there was a great SSB/CW/FM handheld radio for 12M and 10M but it got into trouble with the FCC and was only on the market for a short time or I would have bought several of them! Great advice Mike as always! While on line can be a good source for bargains, I believe that the "club" route is best, not only for the reasons you mentioned, but also, you are less likely to be ripped off! Club members have reputations to uphold, and will not risk their good name by doing a Tech down, rip a guy or gal off and you will not be welcome anymore and word will soon spread to other clubs, far better to do a good deal, and get a reputation for being a good guy and elmer to new Hams. 73 Jim M7BXT

I have the Stryker 955 and use to run it in my dump truck. I say use to as this radio has one issue and that's it's channel knob, it develops a short causing it to skip channels when being turned, sometimes just touching it would cause it to jump freqs. I did some research and found others have had the same issue, considering the price of these radios it's not an issue that should be happening. 73 de W8MJL

The Anytone is much better on SSB than the other 2 at a cheaper price. Most "base" ham radios put out 100 watts. If you get a MARS mod on them (costs like $50 at most ham retailers like HRO or gigaparts... or if you're brave, look up how to do it yourself on YT) it unlocks 11m for transmit on them.

Always wanted a galaxy tho too.. but anytone seems to have the best ears out there and for 230 bucks the at-6666 pushed 60 watts RMS and the conversion is literally 2 buttons at same time on and off And I won't have to worry about no golden screw drivers. The xiegu g90 seems awesome but with the built in antenna tuner I can't run a amp behind it other then theirs and it's more then the radio and only 125 watts. Options options options all seems good some even great! Almost all out of my tiny budget lol. I've drove a semi for 6 years and wanted a radio since 10 yrs old.
