Remember watching this live, & after hearing that performance you know The Who were like “really?? We gotta follow that?!” One of my favorite covers/tributes.
There was not a single performance that wasn’t good in some capacity during this tribute concert, but Pearl Jam easily mopped the floor with what they brought that night. Unbelievable.
Eddie really nails this... his vocal range is similar and you got to have that grit to pull it off. Im touched. One of my all time favorites from the who. Pete songwriting is just so high above caliber i think that Heaven was still to bend an ear. Roger was just like a siren being called back to the sea when i saw him perform it. Glad to see pearl jam honor the who in this fashion means we have come full circle❤ ❤❤
i just watched the who perform this at live aid in 1985 and all it made me think is Eddie Vedder is the greatest rock star of all time. this guy covers U2, tom petty, glen hansard, bob marley with beyonce and just destroys everything. i feel so blessed to have Eddie in my lifetime
Been so many years & I still get goosebumps when that chorus hits for Love, Reign O”er Me. Then they change up the energy with a killer performance of The Real Me. They understood the assignment & stole the show that night.
Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam are THE best impersonators of The Who ever. I know they are all close to the surviving Who members, but their energy is amazing 👏👏👏👏👏👏🫡🫡🫡
Great versions of both songs! Eddie Vedder is probably the only singer who can handle Roger Daltrey's vocals on those songs. Bass player Jeff Ament really had his work cut out for him on The Real Me getting very close to what Entwistle played! Outstanding!
@@brianfitzpatrick9949 they were freed because new dna evidence exonerated them and there was evidence of juror misconduct during their original trial…which was determined by the Supreme Court. All Pearl Jam (the whole band, not just Eddie) did was help support the effort to get the appeal heard.
This just makes you realise how great a front man Roger Daltrey was, how great a band The Who were, and how phenomenal a songwriter Pete Townshend was!
Not the biggest Pearl Jam fan, but this performance is one of the best I have EVER seen in my life. As a fan of the Who, this is absolutely mind blowing. better than the Who has ever performed actually.
Eddie nailed it for sure, but as someone who saw the WHO at SHEA in '82...you guys have no idea....VEDDER ROCKS/Kills it...but the WHO live.....best fuckin band I've ever seen live. The REAL SKYNYRD probably 2nd best live But THE WHO.....just unbelievable live
The best cover of any song ever in the history of music this song was like it was written for Eddie veder every time I hear Pearl Jam’s cover it grabs ahold of my soul there is no better cover of this song
Starting off with what I feel was without question the greatest song Pete Townshend ever composed. I know "Fooled Again" & "Pinball" were more popular, and "Generation," more representative of the band in its early years, but "Love Reign On Me" is one of the most beautiful songs ever composed by any musician in any style of music. It transcends all musical forms and styles. It's like Rock N' Roll's version of "Beethoven's 5th." Especially the bridge section.
I gotta admit, I saw the string section and worried I was in for a Spinal Tap performance...nope. It's not bragging if you can back it up. Nobody else could pull this off. They got every bit of these songs out. Fearless!
Love, Reign o'er Me is my favorite song by The Who. I watched this when it aired knowing Pearl Jam would be performing and hoping they would perform this song. I had chills and tears, just superbly done.
In the distant future, someone will approach an elderly, classically-trained violist who enjoyed a storied career. (S)he will be asked of her/his greatest, fondest memory. The interviewer will prompt, "Was it Carnegie? The Berlin Philharmonic?" The great violinist waves off both. "No... no. In 2008, I was in a classical ensemble that for 10 minutes backed Pearl Jam the night they absolutely nailed a tribute to The Who."
my favourite rock album of all time... I was too young when it came out in 73 cause I was only 9 years, but the UK Mod revival in 1979 and the Quadrophenia movie captured me, and I've been loving the album ever since.. Pearl Jam do it well, has to be said.
As a really old Who fan, I can only sav with sincerity, Bravo! Bravo! but referring to the entire band, orchestra & horns. Magnificent cover of The Who.
1st time seeing this. Holy Crap. Eddie, you FFFFIN knocked it out of Wrigley with these two jams. Fantastic. I had heard about this iconic performance, but seeing it now....WOW....Wish I could have been there for the live set. AMAZING Eddie. You still got the Vedder Vocals....and doing Daltry respectfully. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Technically it's a cover. But it seems the spirit of Jimmy did come into each of the Pearl Jam guys (and strings and brass sections) to produce this performance of the most iconic Quadrophenia numbers. Second best only to the record itself.
Covering The Who takes balls - big brass ones! Pearl Jam pulled it off admirably. I listened to "Quadrophenia" every day for months and later bought another copy to make sure I always had a good copy (ditto for "Who's Next" and "Live at Leeds"). Hearing Pearl Jam's covers evoked the same feelings I felt 48 years ago. Thank you! "I just can't explain why this uneasy feeling is here in my brain"
I LOVE how Pearl Jam covered both songs but on "Can You See The Real Me" they TOTALLY ROCKED IT SPOT ON !... The Who were proud on that night and I KNOW the spirit of Keith Moon was present on the Drums. I can watch this clip over and over... #THEWHO #PEARLJAM
I never was a huge fan of Pearl Jam, until Eddie said that Pete Townsend is his main inspiration. That inspiration shows here. Well done Eddie and Pearl Jam.
When you want to explain to a kid what a real rock performance is, you have to show him this video, what a band, and what wonderful songs those of Quadrophenia, one of the best albums in the history of Rock.
I listen to this every late afternoon along with several Pearl Jam songs while I sweep my deck that over looks the channel islands here on Hollywood beach in Ventura county😁🏄. I've been a huge fan since day one seeing PJ 29 times now and looking forward to #30 after release new album😁👍. PJ s music is my therapy, lifeline and just a feel good, grateful to be alive, type of vibe😊 They nailed these two songs 👍
Eddie Vedder killed it. A classic timepiece he pulled off this song very well down to a t zone. Both Tommy, Who's Next, and Quadrophenia will always be phenomenal albums of all time. Much respect for Pearl Jam.
I was on the USS Nimitz in Bremerton when TEN came out. I gladly worked overtime at night, by myself in my office space, just me, my coffee and cigarettes, and very loud Pearl Jam on my Boom Box/CD Player. Needless to say, it was motivation to get a lot of work done! After we got back from deployment in '93, I learned of LOTS of Seattle Bands made it big. But Pearl Jam is my favorite of all of them!
That ‘I need a drink’ lyric bit, says everything about that time, the story and the feeling. So honest. A lot of feeling in just those four words. I love Townsend for coming out like that in a the best rock song ever that he wrote.
Nobody screams like Eddie Vedder. I think this cover is better than original. I've watched this over and over and it's like I see it for the first time each time.
@@jimmyrichardson67 Couldn't agree more Jimmy, but Eddie wasn't too far behind. I've been a Who fan for the last 50 years, since I was 16. Been lucky enough to see them live 6 times, the last time being just over a year ago in Berlin.
Most bands on their best days couldn't pull off two Who covers this amazing if they were gifted a month at Ramport Studios, never mind live! The smashed guitar at the end really sealed the deal.
One of the best rock ballad of all times, and one of the most forgotten. By luck, Pearl Jam knows how to honoure it. And The Real Me could wake up a death rocker.
That is phenomenal
And actually worth that guitar

As one of the violinists in the section, I must say this was one of the best gigs I’ve ever had. It was a blast performing with all of you!
You all did a fantastic job in honouring one of the greatest rock bands of all time, i tip my hat you all
As a fan of The Who, since the first album, that was an excellent job, sir! 👍🏻👍🏻
Bravo sir!!!!! Well done Gary!
I got as far as the first eight words of the comment when I broke out into a huge grin. Great performance. I'm envious of the experience.
What was it like playing with Eddie Vedder singing right in front of you?
There was not a single performance that wasn’t good in some capacity during this tribute concert, but Pearl Jam easily mopped the floor with what they brought that night. Unbelievable.
Pearl Jam truly honor The Who here.. Matt and Jeff on fire, Eddie nails it, Mike brings the stage energy, Stone being Stone.. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Eddie really nails this... his vocal range is similar and you got to have that grit to pull it off.

One of the very few cover/tribute versions that competes with the original .
Agreed. That was tremendous!
Epic ….lot of respect… they gave it all
Couldn't agree more! PJ are an amazing band.
Whole band was absolutely on point in these performances. Eddie's range and precision here was just NUTS!
Amen
YES! No holding back for Ed and true to the music from the band. Done respectfully and AWESOMELY. 🤘

Shit puts tears in my eyes
MindBlower.
Sometimes a performance is so good, you just cry. Or maybe that's just me.
It's not just you...
Me too!!!
Nope.
This honestly might be my favorite PJ performance. Holy Eddie.
03:42 literally the best thing I've ever heard?
usually imitation falls far short- this set actually made me a Pearl Jam fan
Because it isn't an imitation. Eddie always does his thing
They fucking rocked. Some of Eddie's best work. I never get tired of watching it.
I cant believe this dont have a billion views.. i got a question What happened to great music???
The fusion of two true rock legends, The Who and Pearl Jam. A rock-lovers fantasy made real.
Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam are THE best impersonators of The Who ever. I know they are all close to the surviving Who members, but their energy is amazing 👏👏👏👏👏👏🫡🫡🫡

From your mouth to God's ears.
