@@darrenrichards3100 I think Columbus was a hideous person, so I am no fan of him or a single thing he did... but I don't get why people always have to pull out the cliché of "he didn't DISCOVER anything, there were people there already" - like, that's clearly not what is meant when we say he "discovered" America. Of course the people who lived there discovered the land first. But from the point of view of the Old World he was making discoveries, since he found a place no one in the Old World (his audience, for want of a better word) knew existed. No offense I just always thought that was such a silly point to hang onto when Columbus was such a thoroughly odious man and there are PLENTY of other things to criticise about him and his mythos, rather than getting hung up on the semantics of the word "discover"....

I bet not many Americans know that their country was named after a Florentine sailor, who felt compelled, for whatever reason, to diverge into real estate/frontier promotion. And I'm guessing pamphlets weren't cheap in the 1400's, so it's more than likely he was advertising the 'new world' in the aim of a profitable outcome.

Christopher Columbus earned all the respect and honor.
Columbus was not Italian. He was Catalan. He came from a prominent merchant family from Barcelona and his brother was president of the community of Barcelona. You won't find a scrap of paper of his written in italian, only in perfect Spanish. Last name: Colom. There is a statue of Colombus in Barcelona. The Catalans were outstanding merchants and sailors in the middle ages with small colonies and outposts scattered across the Mediterranean.

Christopher Columbus was the FIRST NAVIGATOR to sail west away from Europe and Africa. Everyone else was being safe and sticking to routes along the coasts. That's why we celebrate his life of exploration and discovery. The others followed in his pathway.

Infact I think every hero or every successful person, every revolutionary leader etc etc has their own issues that push them to do something crazy, because they're just never happy with everyday life.
Mr Columbus was a megalomaniac, hungry for power titles and glory. Doesn't seem like he was a very good dad to his son and he lied and tricked his king so that they'd paid him to find gold etc. He wasn't a nice guy you'd want to be your friend.
But thats just how he was unfortunately, for better or for worse. It's what drove him even if he never achieved what he wanted which was to get Spain trading with Asia. And he died poor in the end too.
It's the well adjusted, temperate individuals that live nice lives that people don't really remember but in the long run its better to be like that and pass on alot more to your children and be remembered for the right reasons or just not be remembered by the general public at all. That's cool too.
Columbus was Pedro Zarco, son of a Portuguese Prince. Born in Cuba, Portugal in Southern Portugal. It's funny if he's Italian than why can't he write or speak Italian.

Came here to say the same thing. Columbus did not "discover" the Caribbean. He may have been one of the first Europeans there, but he absolutely was not the first person.

He didn't discover America first.
He 100% did. He was able to travel back to Europe, established a permanent knowledge of the lands he discovered (unlike the vikings who barely remembered it ) and he knew the position it was in the world. This is what discovering means. It doesnt mean just stumbling on it only

Nevertheless, Columbus became famous for his discoveries. Specifically, the discovery you can discover a continent with millions of people already living on it. And that also was visited by Vikings 500 years earlier. But the truth is he never discovered anything. He was lost and ventured himself in central and south America. He thought he was in India.
Giving this monster a federal holiday is insane. In fact, many US cities and states no longer recognize Columbus Day. Raising the question, why do the rest of us still do it? Sure, it is a chance for Italians to celebrate their heritage, but there are so many other heroes they could celebrate. Why not Frank Sinatra Day? He killed no native Americans that we know of. Or Al Pacino Day, a day that will probably start well but end as an overblown parody of itself. So, as we approach America's least favorite holiday, it commemorates a murderous egomaniac whose most famous discovery was a case of getting lost and refusing to ask for directions.

For only the second time, I have to say, I’m quite disappointed.
You completely glossed over that he made slaves of many of the natives he came across, and while you did sort of just drift over it, he was deeply disrespected by the people of his own time. He was a skilled navigator and captain, yes, he was also an incredibly greedy man, a notorious liar, and the worst kind of ambitious.
And let’s face it, in his primary goal he was also a failure.
The video is too short to include those details which aren't remarkable for the most part anyway. What is remarkable is that very few men in history can rival what he accomplished.

@@CrashLoveless Insofar as if those practices were somehow uncommon at the time, no, they are not remarkable. That doesn't make them irrelevant, just common place and, therefore, unremarkable from an historical point of view. If the video's goal was to highlight remarkable facts of Columbus' life, then it largely succeeded. There's tons of facts it doesn't address, but, as I said, that's largely because of the short time devoted to the subject. Personally, I would enjoy watching a longer, more comprehensive video on Columbus covering his deeds and misdeeds.
To my understanding the only natives he sent to Spain to be slaves were from the Carib tribe that the Arawaks were fighting against due to them being cannibals. It’s also worth noting that he intended for that to be a temporary process when looking at the writings of the primary sources like Peter Martyr, Columbus’s journals, and his son’s autobiography of him.
@@deadboispeedy2485 Thanks. Those are the kind of details I'd like to hear in a longer format, rather than just dropping a line in this shorter video saying "he also enslaved the natives" and then moving on which would serve as a distortion of events.
Eh sorry lads but if you don't bring up the treatment of the native peoples of the Caribbean while he governed it this is a seriously flawed documentary. He was an extremely cruel man and that should be the crux of his legacy.
