Andy Rawls - In this video I building a dutch door for my patio. The door is made from hard maple and is painted. I used floating tenon joinery for the frames and a solid wood panel for the bottom door.

Such quality millwork deserved mortised locks. There is very little left in the upper sash stile after boring a 2 1/8" hole. Makes me nervous

We had our doberman pinscher for almost two years before our first child was born. I built a dutch door from an existing antique oak door for the nursery. It was a great addition since the top could be left open to check on and hear the baby, but restricted access for our doby. Eventually, the dog just jumped the lower half of the door and we found her curled up beside the crib protecting the baby. LOL. Later, the kids found the dutch door was great for puppet shows. The kids are in their 30's now, but the door is still going strong.
a great trick for plugging those hinge holes is to use wooden golf tees.

Wooden matches work pretty well too. In a few cases where the holes were really torn up I've drilled them out and glued in a dowel before re-drilling. One door was so bad I drilled 1/2" hole for each screw -- in the door frame _and_ in the jack stud -- and glued in a long piece of dowel. A new door frame probably would have been good, but it was a non-standard door size, and building a custom door frame wasn't in the budget.
Ive used toothpicks in holes. Its really great when you drill the hole too big you can put just enough in the hole to make it centered again and then just screw it back in
I am Dutch... never new you called this a dutch door... I have one in my home and it mostly is used on farms. Not only in there house but also in the barns. It is a very usefull door.

We call them dutch but I think they originated in Germany. I could be wrong on that, but I seem to recall seeing that on a This Old House episode.

My Dad taught me the "toothpicks covered in glue" technique for plugging unwanted screw holes, which I see a couple of others have mentioned - works a treat! (I like the golf tees idea)

Nothing wrong with breaking off shims in the hinge holes if you have no holes left to adjust. I install doors and windows in Southern Ontario, and typically install 2 of the 4 screws until I'm happy with the fit, and then screw the rest. Door looks great, especially the color! ;)

Was looking to build a couple of these doors. Nice work!
Plus, squaring introduces stress points where cracks can start. Half the doors with split wood i see have squared mortise and tenons. A little torque here, a slam there, easy to start one.
I see you have cloth back belts for the wide belt. You should look into a paper back for the last pass for paint and stain. Paper is a more even backer material and get fewer scratch marks. Cloth is great because it does not rip as easily when you take it on and off, but it is beneficial to end with paper. Make sure the splice is thinner than the paper with a caliper. I learned this from a sander tech that has been working on Timesavers sanders for well over 30 years.
Hey thanks for the advice...I'll give it a try. The widebelt is a big timesaver but can also be a huge headache as well. It consistently gives me issues with snipe...I'm still trying to figure out how to manage that.

Awesome door! I sell doors and windows for a living so a sweet custom Dutch Door is something I can really appreciate. Not sure where you ordered your glass from, but it only takes us about a week maybe 10 days max to get a tempered insulated glass unit made as long as the glass is one our supplier stocks.

I use a 4 degree bevel. One degree is not enough. Might as well be square.

I usually fill the holes with glue, shove in the wood (toothpicks usually) and break it off, then just screw in the screws without drilling. I reckon I rely on never taking the screws back out. Your way is better.
To this day air still leaks through that door as if it was open.
You can simply take a drill, and then shove a wood rivet you carve with a pocket knife. Best solution, extra step, add glue, but that's extra cause once the screw bites, it ain't moving.

I notice your styles are laminated and for the life of me I can't remember the name of that technique. Lots of extra work but worth it.

Did you source that lumbercore stile material from a millwork supplier or make it yourself,? Looks great and I love the hardware !

hey Andy quick question on a Stanley plane i came across and cant find anything on it is a fairly large plane would say close to a foot long give or take seems to be fairly old and the only numbers i can find on it is a 3 and a 8 in this fashion 3|8 with this plane was also an older looking unlabeled smaller palm type plane and Stanley bailey NO. 5 1/4 plane i would say the say the two Stanley planes look about the same age but i would think they would both be Stanley bailey right? dont have much woodworking tool knowledge so any help would be appreciated, Thanks
Nice job might I add however you always glaze from the outside. Your glazing beads (or putty) if it's single glazed always goes on the outside. It would have been nice to see the door with a rebated (rabbited) tennon with wedges because it really is that much stronger. Plus especially with an external door wood can move that much more as opposed to inside furniture. Hopefully the rails won't sheer off from the styles. I first trained as a furniture maker and now work as a joiner, it's slight differences from above that make all the difference. Having tenons like that is absolutely fine in inside furniture however you may have problems in external use.
I don't know what size your rabbet is but I usually use a 14 x 18 mm glazing bead then sand it down to about 13.5 mm so the bead sits just below the rabbet when painted (and after the glass is installed). The bead gets a 55 degree angle which matches what putty would look like if it was on the door/ window sash leaving 2mm flats on each edge so there isn't a massive hard edge for the paint. and the beads are mitered in.

Back in the old days they were used on farms, in the summertime you can open the top part to ventilate but keep the bottempart closed to keep the farmanimals out (and/or children inside).
