i think the arcana works the exact same way as a stand arrow/requiem arrow, the stand arrow gives you an ability depending on the state of your soul/personality but the requiem arrow gives you an ability depending on what you need in that EXACT moment. Liu Kang and Jax are perfect examples of both principles
Yes! Loved watching you edit this last night, glad to see it in all its glory :D *Edit: Also their constant talking about the tournament and never getting to it reminds me of The Simpson's Itchy and Scratchy where they are going to the Fireworks Factory but never get there haha
I did _kinda_ like this movie, my biggest criticism of it though is that they actually made Bi-Han responsible for Hanzo's family's death instead of being framed by Quan Chi I really love that in the games because Scorpion as to keep the guilt that he aimed his vengeance at the wrong man and was working for his enemy all along
In the games it also looked like it was Bi-Han who killed the Hasashi family. It was only revealed later that the culprit was actually Quan Chi using magic. So it very well could be that the Bi-Han we see in the opening isn't actually Bi-Han.
I went to the open cast call to be an extra in this film, and they also filmed many scenes just outside of my workplace. They had camera rigging and lightning setup inside and blacked out all our windows to where they were shooting. I got to watch them film a car crash scene though. It was pretty awesome haha
Loved this one. Sure it had it's flaws, but considering it had just over 1/3 the budget of the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie (without adjusting for inflation), I'd say it turned out pretty damn good. Cole was definitely the weak point, but it's hard to blame the actor since, like you said, the character was a studio demand. He basically did the best with what he had, so I can't even be mad at him for it. Here's hoping the movie's success at least prompts Warner Bros. to give them a bigger budget and a little more freedom with the films to come. With everyone they had working on this one--everyone, cast and crew alike--you know there's some fantastic potential to be brought out once the checks get bigger and the amount of studio meddling gets smaller.
man, this movie was bad as hack, radien dosen't gives a damn about his combatants, "get over here" is low af, goro died to soon, arcanas are cringe and stupid
@@Hateful_Rex Since when has Raiden ever seen his Kombatants as anything but useful tools? Dude's been sacrificing Kombatants for the greater good since forever.

You and the 71 people have to be on some sort of drug because the story was a nothing but disrespect to what mk is, the choreography is horrible for a Mortal Kombat movie, yes the fight scenes should be the one of best out of all the movies because it’s is a MORTAL KOMBAT movie, they extremely slow, the Movie “blood and Bone” staring Michael jai white has far better fighting choreography, I put no blame on the actors only who ever tf played cole, his character is a Big F**k you to Mortal Kombat
I really appreciate how the love from the cast and crew managed to make this an overall good movie despite WB forcing Cole's existence and all the screentime lost to that.
@@thomasderosso5625 I dont understand why studios do this. It works with some movies but one like this with already established characters and lore, its dumb. Like I dont WANT to relate to some random guy you inserted in. I wanna see how you're doing this live action movie with the original characters.
Dang it; you actually just made me a fan of this film. The special effects work behind the scenes and the amount of authenticity and love that went towards the landscapes and lore are reasons why this movie shines. Much appreciate your enthusiasm and fellow MK nerdage, James!
I have a lot of nostalgic attachment to the series but I also still enjoyed it! If the PS2 era of games didn't turn fans off, then this shouldn't really be that bad to them.
the movie was enjoyable only reason it got hated on is because mk Zealots didn't like how simplified the plot is, and they just like to compare 90s as better while i liked both, if i really wanted a better lore driven story i just play the video games. all i cared about was seeing Fatalities and Shooting MotherF@#*ing LaserBeams!
2 details I loved about the movie: 1. During parts of the fights they filmed from a side view perspective similar to the video game. 2. Establishing all the sub factions from the MK universe(Shirai Ryu, Lin Kuei, & the Black Dragon).
Kano absolutely steals any scene he’s in. He’s hilarious to the average viewer but he’s 10x funnier to any Australian watching purely bc of how culturally accurate his dialogue is, he just sounds like a slightly drunk brickie at the pub on a Wednesday night
@@lightup6751 But lacked blood and actual fatalities. Sure, the 1995 movie has its appeal, but the lack of graphic violence was a turn off for me personally. And as proven by the Max Payne movie, toning down M rated material for a PG-13 audience will only make things sanitized and boring.
@@mattc2306 Thats a very selective and oversimplified statement. Just because a movie is less violent doesnt make it a bad film. Every Disney movie’s source material was violent and full of gore yet the Disney films themselves became more famous than their source material could ever imagine. My point is that toning down the violence doesnt mean the movie will automatically suck. And fact is the 1995 movie made 122 million box office on a humble 20 million budget. Its pretty much the most successful video game film of all time. Mortal Kombat 2021 made only 86 million on an unbelievable 50 million. The movie was a borderline flop. Take into consideration how much 120 million of 1997 are now and the two movies are dimensions apart. I agree that the violence was missing. Hey, I mean its Mortal Kombat. Gore is their hallmark. Im totally with you on the violence missing in the original movie. But overall the old movie was so much better. The acting, the atmosphere, the sets, heck the dialogue of 97 writers was cheesy but it fit its theme the 2021 lines made the characters feel so out of place. The acting and dialogue felt so unlike their original characters. Especially this Raiden compared to Lambert. The whole arcane powers was completely made up and gave off Power Ranger or Superhero film vibes. It really didnt fit MK. Unlocking powers. It was similarly awkward when Johnny Cage in MKX out of the blue after 10 games and 15 yesrs found an explanation to his green kicks. Because the writers didnt know how else to explain that Cage would be able to beat Shinnok. Forced, lazy. Then back in the 2021 movie after Lao died the last act where they all randomly go into 1on1s felt so forced and like an excuse of writing the end. They went into this made up white space dimension by Raiden, made a spontaneous plan and then with no explanation somehow ended up dueling the enemies they wished to fight. It was a mess. It says a lot about a movie if its 2021 remake felt poorer executed than a 20 million budget cult classic from the 90s. Im convinced the movie would have been a success if they would have made it a 6 film anthology, create a multiverse like the MCU and for the first film stuck to Scorpion and Sub Zero’s origin stories. Like the interlude of the movie was amazing. It started to get bad the moment Cole was introduced. Scorpion and Sub Zeros clan feud tho. Fans would have loved it, people unfamiliar with MK intrigued and they did nail the actors. Those guys played their roles beautifully. At the end of the day its just opinions. But to me its reasonable to say that the old movie was much more “Mortal Kombat” than the 2021 reboot. Minus the violence, which was better in the latter. But again, violence wont save a poorly written, acted and directed film. But thats just me.
@@lightup6751 Fair enough. But I personally thought the 95 movie was also pretty dumb and ridiculous with character inconsistencies. And I know that Cole is a weak insert character for the 2021 movie, but I didn't mind him nearly as much as Alice from the Resident Evil movies. Plus, I'm glad that the new movie acknowledged the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub Zero rather than making them silent minions to Shang Tsung in the 95 movie. That's also why I liked the animated MK Legend movies, since it tackled plot elements that the old 90's cartoon couldn't adapt with kid gloves. And sure, violence doesn't automatically make a movie better. Hellboy 2019 is am example of how not to adapt the source material into a half-assed reboot. I'm not saying that Mortal Kombat 2021 is a perfect movie (it certainly has its problems), I just like it better than the 95 film. And even still, I wouldn't consider MK 1995 the "best" video game adaptation. I think the Sonic movie from two years ago beat that by a landslide, in my opinion.
You going through what happened behind the scenes and all that really makes me appreciate the movies more. My opinions on this movie are somewhere around middling, but I can't help but be interested in and appreciate all the stuff they did behind the scenes and how the actors went about portraying the characters.
It was awesome yes I just HATED how BiHan became Noob by just a stinkin costume change instead of the cannon him being resurrected by Quan Chi (was it Quan Chi or was it Shang Tsung?)
@@GothKiitsune I don’t think he became Noob though, I think it was just reference to him eventually being resurrected as a wraith? I definitely could be wrong though
The one thing they could do to fix the Arcana is if in the next movie we run into someone (hopefully Nightwolf)with powers but no marking and find out they just massively help unlock power, but aren’t the only way.
That would make a lot of sense. Like the marking is a shortcut or something. Everyone has *something*, but only once you know it exists and actually try to unlock it. The marking is the Elder Gods basically going "Hey you! You need to do something about this tournament."
So I actually just got this movie today on Blueray, and after watching it and the bonus features I found out something pretty cool that I'm actually surprised that you forgot to mention James. When you brought up Joe Talsim (aka Sub Zero), and how he was so skilled in martial arts and so fast that the crew had to ask him to slow down just so that the cameras could actually pick up what he was doing, you didn't mention that the Director mentioned that the only other actor in film history who had to be asked that for the same reason was Bruce Lee.
I hope there's a way for Kabal to return. He was the most badass looking out of everyone, only Sub-zero and Scorpion were close, but Kabal looked better hands down. And for how well he was done, we didn't get anywhere near enough of him, was so disappointed when he died. It was easy to forget that he was 90% cgi and his abilities were so satisfying to watch on the screen
no one is ever truly dead in Mortal Kombat, and they can do. alot with Kabal considering he's a bit of anti hero, heck the modern games have him as a straight up good guy.
I loved this movie, probably one of the only movies I've watched at home and didn't touch my phone. It was goofy but kept me entertained throughout and had plenty of great kills and gore. I get why people may not have liked it but it worked for me.
Fun fact: Jax Brigg’s actor is the brother to Billy who’s most known for his laugh in Double Toasted’s bad movie reviews, which James and Chelsea was interviewed by, which was quite the interview given it involves two of my favorite channels (Dead Meat is still #1) 😁
I actually kinda like the arcana thing. I like to imagine that it was invented by the tournament holders to make the fights more entertaining. And the Jax arms thing can be explained by: it’s what he needed at the moment to be competent in a fight.
Being an Unlikely Sucess for a Reboot, it's hard to imagine what a potential sequel could bring us! It takes a lot of care and attention to come up with a bigger sucess. But I'm especially hopeful about what we'll see sooner or later with the Franchise.
they’ll probably include kotal khan if i had to guess don’t see much else they can use as well, unless they find some way to put the other characters in and do a tournament
Hanzo Hasashi fight with the Lin Kuei ninjas was insane to watch. Of course the fight with Sub-Zero vs. Scorpion is easily the biggest highlight of the movie. I love re-watching this movie a lot. Plus I'm glad Jax's Arms are more real here then the 90's movie did.
I love that plan, I imagine the protagonists are like this, the second one will have as many people wanted Liu Kang as the protagonist to fight Shang Tsung and Raiden as the protagonist in the third movie to fight Shao Kahn in the invasion of Outworld
Wouldn't' Jax's arcana be the same, just over his regular arms instead of his metal arms Either way thanks for all of the good work you do on this series and enjoy ya'lls break
Idk the worst part of that scene is we saw that boulder about to directly hit sonja from a high fall, the he lifts it off and she's perfectly fine, fuuuck that.. If that was any of the other characters they would at least be messed up but no not sonja.. Can't have the blond girl get really injured.. It also pissed me off that the family was ok at the end after being totaly frozen.. When did movies become scared of killing off family members??
The " Harpoon with rope/chain" I believe are Rope Darts. They are a really neat versatile real world weapon. Easily concealed, long range, close range, disarming, choking out and if it was with a weighted metal ball at the end (Meteor Hammer) bludgeoning. But its not an easy weapon to use.
@@TH94Glitch Kyoketsu-Shoge usually have a hook on the blade and a ring, not a weight, so not quite. Rope-Dart, or "Jōhyō" , is more accurate. Weapons of this type/category are also known as "Fluid", "Flexible", or "Soft" Weapons.

The spine not being severed may be a reference to scorpions finisher in mk11 where he turns into a flaming skeleton and jumps through the enemy’s chest but doesn’t cut the spine.
I know they prolly won’t, but my only hope is that if they put Baraka in the sequel that they make him a proper threat. Whether that’s as a predatory beast or the bloodthirsty leader of a killer tribe, Baraka deserves to be as awesome and horrifying as he actually is.
This movie has me rolling with laughter, deep shocked oohs, and wtf's. I really hope they make a trilogy at least to get everyone some screen time from the games.
I just burst out laughing as soon as James popped up at the very start screaming ‘Mortal Kombat’ in an OG Scorpion costume. Legendary. Good luck and best wishes on the wedding to both James and Chelsea.
I think Lamberts Raiden was perfect for the movie. =D And he was a fantastic guy off camera, buying the others food, and financing some of the project.
As a person in a place like south australia, it genuinely feels kinda like an honor when something like the mortal kombat movie gets filmed in adelaide. Of course stuff does happen in SA but we aren't like the big money state i guess. Also, my mum works for a foam factory (where the basically cut, glue, resize and bail foam), her factory made stunt mats for the movie and weirdly enough seats to be used in tanks for the Pilipino military, if you don't believe me honestly I don't blame you because that's a bit of a wild claim.
I mean Australia is a prime place to film enormous sets. Abandoned mines, miles and miles of flat uninhabited land. Pretty sure the British even tested Nukes in the outback
Just gotta say, Cole could've easily been replaced by Takeda, just by twisting the script a little bit and making it his son. It would've prevented any kind of non-game characters in the movie. Idk if anyone agrees with me tho?
Glad you liked the film! As an MK fan myself I loved it too. Also, one little note. Liu Kang and Kung Lao aren't actual cousins. Cousin is just a term of endearment in Asian countries for someone around the same age as you that you are very close to.

Oh, I get it. Right to bear arms. Ha!
I did _kinda_ like this movie, my biggest criticism of it though is that they actually made Bi-Han responsible for Hanzo's family's death instead of being framed by Quan Chi
I really love that in the games because Scorpion as to keep the guilt that he aimed his vengeance at the wrong man and was working for his enemy all along
They'll most likely retcon it in a future sequel
Or maybe it was Quan Chi the whole time
You gotta remember, since this franchise deals with time travel. They can alter the writing and still make it canon to the overall story.
in the old games sub-zero was the one responsible it wasn't until mk9 that he was framed

Honestly, I hope he covers the 3 animated films. They're a brutal insanity and quite fun.
With everyone they had working on this one--everyone, cast and crew alike--you know there's some fantastic potential to be brought out once the checks get bigger and the amount of studio meddling gets smaller.

the 2 replies above are the duality of man
the movie was enjoyable only reason it got hated on is because mk Zealots didn't like how simplified the plot is, and they just like to compare 90s as better while i liked both,
if i really wanted a better lore driven story i just play the video games.
all i cared about was seeing Fatalities and Shooting MotherF@#*ing LaserBeams!

A movie doesn’t need to be perfect to be great. This was such a blast to watch and was honestly way more than I expected, I loved it.
It was pretty lackluster. Esp considering the old one is better and over 20 years old
@@lightup6751 But lacked blood and actual fatalities.
Sure, the 1995 movie has its appeal, but the lack of graphic violence was a turn off for me personally.
And as proven by the Max Payne movie, toning down M rated material for a PG-13 audience will only make things sanitized and boring.
@@mattc2306
Thats a very selective and oversimplified statement.
I just like the movie
"Hanzo finds Bi-Han, and though he doesn't speak his language, both of them are fully fluent in kickassery" that was hilarious 😂

I actually liked the idea of the first movie building up to the tournament and them introducing the characters first
Very Injustice Leauge DC Multiverse Stuff

Good work James, here's hoping this Kill count doesn't get copyrighted.

The tournament is coming actually, James. It's planned for a trilogy:
This one: Pre Tournament
Next one: Tournament
