If you take a look at a lot of other modern racing cars with turbo v6 or other turbo low cylinder layouts, it’s a very quiet, low buzz, not at all exciting. But these engines have a weird brassy tone, and it’s pretty unique. I think the main issue is that they are too quiet, but I think that’s because of the MGU-H, which is going away in 2026.
This is because many of f1 fans are much older around the millinial time from the early 90s to the early 2000s who grew up with the v12 and v10 as well as the v8. As a gen Z who was born in 2008. I basically grew up with these v6 turbo hybrids, although I did watch some of the v8 era races with my dad as a baby but I wasn’t fully interested until late 2014 or early 2015

Hondas always sounded mean. I still remember sitting at Turn 14 at Shanghai in 2017 and all the noise came from the mclaren under breaking and going onto the main straight.
They are loud, sure, but compared to the V12\V10\V8 they convey no emotion. Just watch a video of Schumacher (or some other V10 era driver) and you'll get chills for that sound

Now, I'm not saying i despise the v8, v10, v12, they're great.. the v6 just isnt as terrible (to me) as everyone says

It definitely got better over the years (especially Honda's), but I still wish they would sound more like the turbo engines of the '80s. More roar and raw sound, not to mention louder and more powerful-sounding. Of course if I could choose literally any sound, I'd choose the mid-2000s V8s, which revved up to 20k. I wouldn't mind V10s either, I know most people prefer those. But I get it, even though 100% biofuel is being introduced in the coming years (and thus carbon neutrality will be achieved soon after), they have absolutely zero intention to get back to the more exciting, much lighter and cheaper N/A engines, so it remains a dream for the foreseeable future. Who knows, maybe some decades later F1 won't be this dependent on big car companies, and will finally focus more on actually making the series better instead of purely creating advertisement for them. One can hope, right?

2014 is the only year where these cars sound terrible, from 2015 onwards they became what we know today. Shame that was our first exposure to these engines, now even after 10 years we still get tons and tons of dumbasses crying for V10s to come back, or saying these sound like vacuum cleaners
Unpopular opinion: I like V6s a lot, and they are just as, if not better sounding than 2013 engines and older. Anyway, engine sounds don’t define racing, it’s just the sound to make a car move, it’s not meant to be listened as music (unless you sleep to it)
@@nbain66 That was not my experience. I was in Interlagos for the F1 GP in 2021 and 2022, I was at the same sector in both occasions and 2022 sounded deeper and louder especially Ferrari and Alpine
@@JotaV2502 Ferrari and Alpine both redesigned parts of their engine for 2022, but Merc and Honda just did standard rule change updates. The 2022 Ferrari engine did sound quite nice compared to 21.
Translation 2019-2013 had KERS+DRS. The 2013 F1 engine used to have KERS+DRS. Now it only has DRS. Now there is no KERS in 2023. If you remove KERS, the car will still be very fast.
They stopped using Kers back in 2014 when they replaced the v8s with the v6, they still use ers which you’ll see being used if a driver ever has their rain light flashing in a dry race

Take any V6 engine in the world, turbo or naturally aspirated. All of them sound better than F1 V6 engines. I really don't know how in the world can Formula 1 ruin the V6 exhaust note like this. The worst part is that FIA, FOM don't give a damn about it. Manufacturers also don't care, they invest money to go faster, to win. Regulations! always been the problem. And when you make the ragulations according to the manufacturers demands.... this is what you get. Vacum cleaner sounding F1 cars.
You're pretty hard pressed to find another V6 that's fuel flow limited and has exhaust scavenging on top of the turbo muffling the sound. It's a very quiet combination. Once the MGU-H is gone in 2026 I'm curious about the outcome.
I don't hear the difference. All are so interchangeable. For years it was said that the sound will improve. After 10 years it's fair to say that it was a lie.

For me, 2022 V6 is just 🤤 because it has bigger exhaust
They actually got quieter in 2022 because they got rid of the external waste gate pipes and moved that into the center exhaust
