this is mostly down to different mic placements, and compression bit-rate which has an EQ effect. Some of these clips are heavily compressed which will lose high frequencies more than lower ones. And every car design constitutes a slightly different placement of the mic
2021 AlphaTauri wins it by far, that Honda engine sounded really good and it was even better in 2019 and then they toned it down a bit. The ferrari engine is the most recognizable through the years and the eras, it has a certain tune to it and I just love playing with Ferrari powered cars on the F1 game just because the engine sound is so smooth. And yet the "international" feed on F1TV show us during 2024 Saudi Arabian GP the completely different mic placement and cars sounded like proper turbo cars. Brutal and [beep] [beep]. I'd like your video about that.
The onboard of T3 at Austria really illustrates the differences in rotation of the cars. Some of the backmarker cars are braking earlier and still missing the apex. A good way to compare exhausts but it's almost an even better comparison of low speed cornering from car to car, driver to driver.
To be honest, I've never particularly liked the exhaust mic sounds (apart from the Renault and to an extent the McLaren-Renault, those ones were nice; the Mercedes (and customers) ones always sounded horrible), so I prefer the onboards without them, like we had pre-2018 and like the RB, Ferrari and Haas do this year (though the Sauber and the Mercedes sound quite similar to their non-exhaust-mic sounds).
Its not just the wastegate, the teams progressively moved the microphones further inside the bodywork. Back in 2018-2019 you could actually see the microphones next to the exhaust, now they're deep inside near the transmission. Also the audio bandwidth has been reduced greatly resulting in worse quality overall.
The Honda engine does the Chewbacca sound off throttle just like their GTP car in the IMSA Weathertech Championship. I think it's the engine cutting fuel while harvesting energy but not positive. Sounds awesome

I can feel the difference in how "clean" the engine note is. The 2024 spec cars feel like their sound is a bit more "dirty" or mixed with a different array of sounds that together feel good. The 2021 cars otherwise feel clean, almost perfect, as if the sound had no impurities from anything, only the clean engine note combined with the ERS whine. It's definitely something to take notes of, how only fusing the wastegate to the main pipe created this new sound that feels raw again. I like it. Yes, it's true that 2020-2021 had the purest sound in a long time, but this sound is not bad at all.
