    My 600-lb Life is an American reality television series that has aired on the TLC television network since 2012. Each episode follows a year in the life of morbidly obese individuals, who usually begin the episode weighing at least 600 pounds (270 kg), and documents their attempts to reduce their weight to a healthy level. Update episodes, called "Where Are They Now?", feature one or more previous patients, picking up a year or more after their original episodes aired.
    Patients are placed under the care of Iranian-American Houston surgeon Younan Nowzaradan (often referred to as simply "Dr. Now"), who first has them attempt losing weight on their own by following a strict diet, and then depending on the patient's progress may offer gastric bypass surgery or sleeve gastrectomy to further assist in weight loss.

    I notice in nearly every one of these stories that the people caring for (and usually enabling) the obese subjects are themselves obese-some of them morbidly obese. I can't help think that in some part of their mind, they don't want the loved one to lose weight, because then THEY will be the fattest one. So much more dysfunction is going on than just with the show subjects.

    I don’t understand how morbidly obese people were allowed to adopt a baby. I thought the health of the parents was a consideration in the adoption process, like will they be able to care for the child and be around till it’s an adult?

    • @mommy2libras
      @mommy2libras 3 місяці тому +5

      I'm guessing the baby was a family member's or family friend who couldn't care for it. In cases like that, you can even set up for the adoption before the child is born if you already have a home lined up. Not every kid has to be thrown into the state's care "baby pool" and jump to foster homes until finding an adoptive parent. In fact, I think most adoptions are private adoptions now. You can even become a "limited" foster parent if you have a family member whose children need a place to go. You still have to go through the application and review process and have inspection and background check and such but they get it done quickly so the kids can go into your care as quickly as possible. Being a "limited" foster home means you're only certified to take in these particular kids/family members. No one from CPS or DHS or whatever is going to call you and try to place more kids with you. You'll just have these kids until they can go back home. It's a really good thing that keeps a lot of kids out of the "system".

    Look if you are in severe constant pain it should be reason enough to lose weight. These people could survive in ketosis for a year probably and they think they need 27 pounds of unhealthy food every day to live. I would tell them no, shut the door and let them ware themselves out like a baby if they don't get what they want.

    • @Outworlder
      @Outworlder 2 місяці тому

      They would need some mineral and vitamin supplementation but you are probably right.
      Some back of the napkin calculation. 600lbs person. Let's say 80% is fat. 480lbs. Each pound is 350 kcal = 1,680,000. If we are generous and say they need 2400 a day(they don't), that's still 700 days of energy. If 1500, that's 1120 days.
      I did not account for how much of that is actually water and not fat. But it seems that one year is a good assumption.

That is of course just my opinion I'm not saying it is fact because obviously I can't read their minds but that's just how I'm seeing it. Addiction is like that, addiction is very powerful and unfortunately these people have a food addiction. It's just like a drug addiction except with a drug addiction you can do without the drugs, you can't do without food, yeah okay you can live a few weeks without food, but after that you're kind of screwed until you eat.

      Exactly they bring these kinda people to the hospital for us to look after. Do regular turns on them, wash them and all sorts and this is how people end up with bad backs yet we’re still underpaid but they have money to buy junk food everyday more than 3 times a day

  • @michelledesgroseilliers2956

    How can they afford all that food?

    • @Antares2
      @Antares2 2 місяці тому

      Well, first of all, junk food is usually not very expensive. At least not in a "dollars per calorie" metric.
      Secondly, food is the ONLY thing they spend money on; You don't see these people travel, have hobbies (outside food), go shopping (for non-food) or even drive in many cases. All they do is sit around in their houses eating and eating.
      A lot of them barely have any clothes as well, so even though their extremely large clothes might be more expensive than normal size clothes, they don't seem to have a lot of them.
      They live in squalor a lot of the time and only spend their money on food without ever leaving the house.

      That wouldn't help these people at all. Seriously- some of them eat 2 large pizzas in one sitting as a single meal and still eat several other extremely large meals (meant for several people) plus various snacks in one day. If feeling full stopped them from eating, they'd have stopped a long time ago. Not one of them ever feels actual hunger. Any sensation they get in their midsection, they interpret as hunger as an excuse to eat but it's almost certainly some kind of digestive thing, normal or distress.

Maybe that would make a difference, the person can be dishonest and not photo all the food but they are only fooling themselves. They do not realize how much they ingest. One guy said he did not even know what 800 calories looks like WHILE he is eating a huge burger and fries which is possibly 800 calories as one meal!

    Have any of these people heard of tough love?? Give them what they need, not what they want!! Keep telling them that you love them and this is why you are only giving them what they need. You may say I don't understand, oh but I do! My oldest son was drug addicted and I tried to help him, but unless they want help, it won't work. Through trial and error and him roller coastering , I finally kicked him out of my house!! He was stealing from me to support his habits!! I told my children, no matter what you do, I will always love you, but if you break the law, I will not hide or take up for you. I believe if you do the crime, you do the time!! I loved him so much, I gave him up to God. He is now 39 years old. He has a good job and doesn't drink anymore. He still smokes pot, which I still do not like, but I am so proud of so many of the hurdles he has jumped. No one is perfect!
