My 600-lb Life is an American reality television series that has aired on the TLC television network since 2012. Each episode follows a year in the life of morbidly obese individuals, who usually begin the episode weighing at least 600 pounds (270 kg), and documents their attempts to reduce their weight to a healthy level. Update episodes, called "Where Are They Now?", feature one or more previous patients, picking up a year or more after their original episodes aired.
Patients are placed under the care of Iranian-American Houston surgeon Younan Nowzaradan (often referred to as simply "Dr. Now"), who first has them attempt losing weight on their own by following a strict diet, and then depending on the patient's progress may offer gastric bypass surgery or sleeve gastrectomy to further assist in weight loss.

Please for the love of God, don’t try to make Maya out to be the innocent little angel here. If you watch the entire episode, you will see that she verbally abuses Christian to the point that he doesn’t even want to retaliate because he knows it’s pointless. no wonder he gets up and leaves her. I do the same damn thing.

I watched the full episode on hulu. She kept calling Christian her spouse. Telling people that her spouse left her. Making him out to be a jerk. He was not her husband. He was her boyfriend. She pushed him to the edge by yelling at him and blaming him for her weight gain. Calling her mother and telling on him like he was a child. He just had enough and decided to leave. I don't blame him.

Video team, you need to redo this, and make sure it's clear she drove him to leaving. Maya is highly abusive, and throws tantrums left, right and centre. In the original episode, she abuses him so much, it is disgusting. She is manipulative, and cruel, pinning him in the room and refusing to allow him to leave. She is a domestic abuser. She's extremely controlling. It is obvious that he just refuses to live under her control any more.

33 yr old and 689 pounds and STILL walking around and driving without problems. Most are bed ridden by 650 pounds. She's almost 700 and she's not showing signs of physical collapse yer. Impressive.

Food plays a large part in ALL cultures! So many people bring that excuse out. I grew up with Italian parents - believe me, food is a big part of the culture - however, my parents were never overweight. Also, when I've visited Italy, the only people you see that are overweight are tourists 🤷🏻♀️
Because Italians and Europeans eat good quality food..I'm Australian with a European background. Italian food is the absolute " best"!

I was thinking the same exact thing!! My kids dad is Italian. They all have big meals and parties with tons of good food. Im Jewish and Jewish moms love to feed people. Yet I am a healthy weight. That's not an excuse

Maja was absolutely horrible to people who were just trying to help her. She's a cry baby who blamed her boyfriend for her not meeting her goals. I went through weight loss surgery back in 2020 and when I had my set backs, it was MY fault. She needs to own her failures.
Blames everyone but herself for overeating. Her boyfriend put up with her longer than most men probably would have. I do wish her the best though.

I wonder how much it costs to feed each one of these people every day. They eat SO MUCH and most of it is fast food. They probably spend $50/day, at least, on fast food. I wish they would break that down on the show. I simply couldn't afford to eat that way.

Nah, I watched this epusode when it first aired, Maja is abusive, narcissistic and manipulative. Your script makes her out to be the innocent victim in this situation and she was NOT. Wherever Christian is today, I hope he's happy. He deserved better.

I’ll remember from this episode was Mom Mom Christian’s ruining everything! What a miserable human being she was.
She kept referring to Christian as her "spouse". She does it several times toward the end of this video. Not true and very weird...
She abused him relentlessly, and the fact she used her mom to manipulate him is just disgusting. Why would he want to engage with her. She twists everything he says, and she uses arguments as an excuse to self destruct.

I don’t believe for a second that Maya’s parents were awful to her, I’d imagine it’s the other way round and she probably exhausted them
I agree. The interaction between her and her mother gave me the impression that Maja had been too much of a whiner and manipulator for a long time her mom (and maybe other family members too) had to set boundaries, which I'm sure Maja found hurtful, offensive or even abusive.

Why are most of these people all the same? Blame their issues on everyone else. Dr now is completely right that if you're going to use hard times to justify weight gain you will never make a permanent lifestyle change
22:18 "You need to have a conversation where you tell your father ... [about his] maltreatment." -This is awful advice. Now she may believe her health is conditional upon A) having that conversation and B) her father accepting blame. For all we know, her father never engaged in "maltreatment". We only hear about Maia's perspective and if her perspective of her relationship with Christian is anything to go by, she is not capable of judging these things evenly.
What if the father never answers the phone ... or becomes angry and blames her? -Maja may take that we an excuse to believe her father is responsible for her health issues and could result in her making even less effort to control her own diet.
I just cannot believe a professional counsellor would give such terrible advice to a patient.

Even during what was a favourable framing of Maya and her struggles she managed to have a couple of meltdowns. Christian looked absolutely defeated, like a deflated balloon. The man had nothing left to give, and at some point prior to filming he had probably taken stock of his life and found it wanting. I can’t judge him at all.
Maya can walk and she also can drive so she's a lot more mobile than other 600lb lifers. She has a very good chance of losing the weight cos she's not bed bound like other obesies on the show.
Which just tells you how lazy she really is. She is still able to walk but is STILL 700 lbs in spite of that. Which makes her prognosis for success look even worse than the ones who can't walk IMO

I understand that Maja has had issues in her life which contributed to her weight, but that is no excuse for how she treated Christian. She was manipulative and abusive toward him. Even her own mother told Christian that she wouldn't blame him if he ended the relationship--I'm glad that he did!

I grew up with a functional alcoholic. Divorced parents, mom battled her own weight, mom worked long hours.
I was never close to overweight until recently (I’m at the top “healthy” BMI, which is too much for me).
Oh, and like so many of these patients on the show, I have sexual abuse in my past.
Never ran to food, booze or pills. Never smoked (hey, how many of the patients smoked?) anything.
They have similar stories, and they use it like “I couldn’t ever help being fat.”
How it’s the same people in these episodes? Aren’t there other 600 pound people that can be shown?
