Giant Cuttlefish Attack SCUBA diver

  • Giant Cuttlefish (Sepia apama) attack on female dive buddy. Cuttlefish breed and lay their eggs around this time of year - and become very aggressive and "frisky". They are very intelligent and are attracted to "shiny" things such as this torch, and especially anything that is yellow in colour.
I motioned to her to switch the torch off, unfortunately she didn't understand and this footage is the result. This is the first time this diver had ever seen a cuttlefish. This cuttlefish followed us for another 20 minutes.

Encounter with one off northern Papua New Guinea led to my short story "Ten and ten", published in Analog magazine.
Incidentally, based off my encounter (which lasted some 10-15 minutes), when a cuttlefish goes all white, it either means "Danger!" or "More stupid humans coming" (or possibly both). Spotting two newly arrived divers, a cuttlefish up near the top of the reef I was diving went all white and a second or so later, so did the one hovering a meter in front of me. Alien language.

I live in Western Australia, quite a while ago, maybe 20 years(?) a diver died in an accident with a Cuttlefish. From memory it went for his head and grabbed hold of him, knocking his mouthpiece out. It was near Rottnest Island.

He hardly attacked her - more like, he was curious and just checking her out.

The Great White asked if I could draw your attention for just a moment. But as usual, he saw some hippie skinny dipping and got distracted.

It clearly attacked the hand holding the light. Seeing that, kinda cute. Not what he expected to tag him, I noticed surprise behind that dive mask ! Thanks! It's a great share.

@TheKlundge I've experienced this behaviour every year around April - I have posted another video 4 years later around the same time of year with another "agro" cuttlefish. I think this time of year co-incides with their breeding season.

I don’t see an attack by a cuttlefish in their natural habitat, it appears the cuttlefish is attracted to the diver’s flashlight.

If a cuttlefish bit you, I would imagine it would hurt - their beak is very strong and sharp - these guys bite straight through crab shells. As I have said in my comments, this diver had never seen a cuttlefish before and it would have been very intimidating for her - I suspect a lot of people would do the same. Plus ever tried to kick something underwater with fins on - would never have collected.
