How to remove security Torx screws without the proper tools

Here I am just showing a method I used a few times to remove security Torx screws when I did not have the proper screws. Someone sort of internet famous ruined a possible prototype machine by being impatient and cutting into it with a dremel. Let’s take an extra minute when working on things like this and improvise tools, while being nondestructive.

How did you remove the screws that are in the back of the ps4?
Because I was able to remove the ones near the hard drive but the 3 screws in the back I can't remove them

(2nd owner of a PS4 that's never been cleaned. Had to take it apart for a NECESSARY cleaning that proved to be a lovely adventure for my OCD lol. This pen trick did the the job for 3 (Very) specific screws that I didn't have the tool for! This method works when your in a pinch!)

@@alias136 Yup! Hahahaha. I recommend that you get a knife to hollow out the necessary width of the screw in the pens body. It takes a moment but you will Literally be doing what he's doing in the end lol. Just remember to press down firmly while unscrewing!

Im trying to take the screws off the back of my ps4 to clean the fan but have no tool or similar pens to do it with, but this is a very creative and cool way you have found

Do you think this would work with an Xbox controller? I'm trying to clean mine and can't find anything small enough to twist the t-9 screws

is there a chance that this method works if the screw is in deep hole with plastic sides?
it's worth a shot! you may need a thinner piece of plastic to melt, you can even try a little bit of oil in the hole so that the melted plastic doesn't cool and stick to the other plastic

You might get away with using a very small flat screwdriver, in the torx screw. I have had to use that method as well.
I have a super small screw driver and I have broken all the little middle circles in the middle of the screws now they won’t turn

I will try this today because I brought 4 sets of cheap tools yesterday and 2 of the sets had a piece that fit my ps4, but I rounded them before pulling my console apart so decided to stop... I really wanna clean my fan and am hopeful for this trick

someone else here said they tried it and it worked. I don’t have a ps4 but if they are these kind of screws should be fine. i have used this to open gameboy and sega genesis cartridges before as well.

Also a flathead screwdriver could work aswell if you have a mighty grip strength to keep pushing into the screw while turning

you can try a really small flathead screwdriver and jam it next to the security pin, i have had to do that before as well
I´ve got even smaller screws on my butterfly knife and im not sure, if such a small screwdriver can even exists lol

Does it have to be that specific pen
not necessarily, just needs to be a stiff plastic, cant be a pen that bends, needs to be the kind of plastic that will snap if you try to bend it. i have used glitter pens and things, just needs to be thin

A couple years ago, I opened up a microwave by using the ends of 2 paperclips and a pair of pliers... Slowly but surely.
Today, my laptop had a size t5 torx screw, and I didn't have any paperclips small enough for the microscope-sized screw. If I had a crystal pen I might have tried your method. Ended up ordering a small electronics screwdriver kit... Will need to fix other small electronics lol.

Over complicated. Take a small screwdriver and snap the security post off. Use a regular T10.
