    Thank you so much! It was the hammer flange screws on mine. I took out the action and tightened the wippen flange screws as well to get ahead of the problem.

    Thank you, that was very helpful! I've been having a problem with clicking noises in my upright piano and couldn't figure out how to make them go away. After watching your video, I found that tightening a particular set of screws solved the problem.

      Thanks for watching Jon. Yes, loose flange screws is one of the easiest fixes for clicking noises if that is the problem. I'm glad you were able to take care of the problem.

    Very good video, thanks ! Maybe it's not what you would call a clicking noise but I had on my upright action some noises coming from the springs just under the jack (the one pushing the jack under the hammer butt, as we can see it on your video). It was more like... a spring noise ;-)
    The noise comes from the top or bottom end of the spring where it takes place between the whippen and the jack bracket. In that case, you just have to move a bit the spring up and down with a very thin screw driver to eliminate the friction. No need to disassemble anything for that.

    I have a couple of piano keys that don't so much click...they squeak. But trying to find that on youtube only turns up hundreds of piano sustain pedal squeak videos. No piano key squeak videos. Amazing. Anyway, thanks for the tips. Maybe some of these will apply.

      For a squeaky key I would suspect the key bushings may be the problem. We sell ProTek CLP lubricant for this purpose.

    Hah, I remember some clicking noises when it was very dry in winter that the felt became too hard.. None of my family members could hear it.. But it was driving me mad,, the clicking noise was annoying.. But that they could not hear it... That drove me up the wall,, it was there so clearly and they couldnt hear it...

      Yes, clicking noises can be very annoying. But as long as you can figure out what the problem is and fix it.

    My grand piano clicks after the Release of a white key

    Hi Steve, I have a couple of clicking notes (f3, g3) on a grand piano. They only click when you strike the key hard. I figured out that if you press the sostenuto pedal down first, the clicking goes away. So, I'm guessing the damper lever is hitting the sostenuto rail. I also tried pulling up with my hand on the damper head. If I do this with a little force, I replicate the clicking sound. Do you know of some ways of dealing with this problem? Thank you.

    • @howardpianoind
      @howardpianoind  6 років тому

      I had this problem on a piano not too long ago. It could be that the screws holding the sostenuto mechanism are loose. That's what it was in the piano I had this problem with.

    • @ryan_jawad
      @ryan_jawad 6 років тому

      Thanks for the suggestion. I was able to fix the problem by doing basically what you said. I just moved the rail up a little.

    I have a noise after the key is released... thinking it might be a hardened back rail felt, end of key hitting it and not being cushioned. Like this on all keys. A 1943 Acrosonic spinet.

    • @howardpianoind
      @howardpianoind  4 роки тому

      It's hard to tell what this might be. It is possibly worn felts in the backrail cloth or the hammer rail cloth.

    If the majority of your keys are clicking after bringing your piano home, would it most likely be the screws?
    I don't remember the keys clicking when I was looking at the piano before buying it and there were a couple bumps on the 2.8 mile drive from the past owner's house to ours.
    I'm just a little hesitant to take the action out of my new(used) spinet piano. I've taken the action out of my old, tall upright, but, of course, the upright doesn't have the lifting rods attached to the keys and it's action is easier to set into place.

    • @howardpianoind

      It could be loose flange screws. It also could be worn out rubber lifter grommets.

    Yeah I opened up my piano for this and it turns out the clicking was a PENCIL that was sitting on the brown part behind the keys that is flat... the pencil is old as hell, from at LEAST the 50s too so not a bad find

    What about clicking noise when you use sustain pedal, it is only when it is not pressed quickly but slowly, or when you are half way and press it down entirely. The noice comes from the action, it is not produced down, and is like clock sound. Very annoying. Thanks.

    • @howardpianoind
      @howardpianoind  4 роки тому

      It sounds like you may have a squeak in the pedal. There is probably something in the pedal mechanism that needs lubrication. In some cases this can be difficult to diagnose.

    • @39mamita
      @39mamita 4 роки тому

      @@howardpianoind Solved. It was coming from the metal springs that are in each dumper, in wood stick that slide on wood part when sustaind pedal is pulled, once lubricated one by one, the noise has gone.

    • @GaleMarie

      I came here for the same problem - It does sound like a "clock" ticking sound in my upright but I also hear like a "wood creaking" sound. When I press the sustain pedal, a click sound comes from the action without me touching any keys...but what's worse is that then when I press the sustain pedal and then press a key, there is a clanking sound that also comes from the action no matter which key I press - but it only happens on the first press of the key...so if I keep the sustain pedal pressed, the clank sound is only happening once - at the second press of the key if the sustain pedal is still pressed, then it's fine - there's no more clanking sound - But it's very annoying because obviously I can't just keep my foot on the pedal continuously so there are clanks and clicks every few seconds as I'm trying to play - If this might be a lubrication issue, are you able to explain exactly where it is that I could try lubricating?

    • @39mamita
      @39mamita 3 роки тому

      @@GaleMarieMy problem was too much force of damper springs in each key. I solved my problem in 2 ways: by releasing pressure on each damper spring (you can do it by pulling back the string a little toward you and listen by moving the damper slightly and listening carefully). And also, lubricate with with ProLube using tiny brush the part of damper where spring press the wood of damper. Hope it helps.

      @@39mamita Thank you - I'll have to go get some ProLube and try it....I have all the panels removed and I just took out the action for the first time ever... my piano room is looking like a repair shop at the moment! I'll come back and post the outcome later...
