  • Our neglected Onan BGM has only 7 hours on it after 15 years of service. While under load it is loping along and we attempt to solve that by cutting corners and not replacing the carburator.
We learn how great Berryman's B-12 fuel cleaner is, how best to use it, and to stop being cheap and just replace the carburator for peace of mind! Also install a new fuel filter.
Stay tuned for an action packed (it could happen!) video on how to replace and tune the carburator.

1.) the carb does have a drain. Remove the fuel shut off solenoid.... carb is empty TADA!
2.) Your Gen lopes under load because as the motor gets loaded down it opens the throttle but it goes lean. This is not the idle circuit it's the main metering circuit.
3.) You do not use the concentrated B-12 fuel system treatment. You get a can of B-12 chemtool carb cleaner with a straw. You disassemble the carb and clean it.
4.) Proper cleaning of a fouled carb means running very fine wire into orifices to dislodge blockages. The B-12 will help break them down small enough to be blown out.
5.) You only need to replace the carb when it is not serviceable. Not serviceable means that it is physically broken, either mounting ears broken off, throttle shaft bent and no longer turns or cannot be removed and replaced (I LOVE when people try to use a screwdriver to pry a stuck carb off....) Unit has corroded to the point where it leaks air or fuel.
6.) I just cleaned the carb on a 4kw onan that has sat in the desert for 20 years with less than 2 hours on it. The fuel had solidified in EVERY passage. It took me less than an hour to tear the carb apart, clean it completely, re-assemble it, re-install it and fire up a gen-set that had sat for 2 decades.

After replacing the carb did your issues go away and did it run well under load?

Rambling Arnolds Did you have to adjust the carb or was it already adjusted for the right RPM? If not what did you use as a guideline?

how hard is it to change the carb?

    • @ramblingarnolds4501

+James Farley It's not too hard (remove air cleaner, remove fuel line, remove choke wire, then remote the two nuts holding the carb to the intake manifold and then the carb falls off). Reinstalling is just the reverse. I went ahead and replaced the fuel lines going to the generator's fuel pump and the line from the fuel pump to the carb just for good measure (our coach had sat for years so the rubber was suspect). Tuning the carb was straight forward and is outlined in the owner's manual.

Sounds like you've been running ethanol gas. BIG no-no. That crap eats up aluminum carbs and fuel lines and ALL rubber parts/hoses.

So why did you waste 12 mins of my life watching this to find out you bought a new carb? Why post this video at all if its not helpful to anyone? Post the video on mounting the new carburetor.
