Thanks for the pointers. I got a good tip from a Cummins tech. He said to install a shut off gas valve in line just before it goes into the carb. When you're ready to store for a while, turn off the gas valve, start the gen, and let it run out to empty the bowl. He said you will never have to replace the carb if you do this.
Just open the float bowl drain and put cleaner directly in there. It's super simple. Connect a hose to that nipple under the float bowl. Turn that little screw counter clockwise to open the valve. Push cleaner into the tube. No disassembly needed.
Thank you , RV Onan shutting down when A/C turned on, noted idle arm over working. Did your clean system as suggested works great. 2 gallon gas , (Used less than one) 3 ft of fuel line and sea foam. follow instructions. A cheap fix.
Thanks for the video! I'm about to do this maintenance. If you want to run the generator for 30 minutes you might want to put the cover back on to direct the fan air to where it will do the most cooling.
I had been racking my head on how to get that gunk out of my carburetor and this did the trick!! Thanks for posting.I went a step farther and added a fuel shutoff valve so to eliminate the fuel sitting in the carburetor. I also added stabile to the fuel tank and added only non-ethanol fuel to the tank!
Thanks for the info. I didn`t run my gen for about three months, when I finely got it started it sputtered and reaved up and down. I ran some seafoam through the carb and after three cycles of running for about 20min then turning the gen off for 5min, it now purrs like a kitten. Thank you.
One thing I just figured out is that on mine when you remove incoming gas line not much comes out. Going back to blow some air through line back to tank. Then going to run his fix just to make sure carb is clean. Nice video.
One way to avoid carb gunning up is to add sea foam or a good stable product to the last fill up when parking the rig for an extended period. Then just run gen at appx half load for appx 30 minutes once or twice a month. Has worked on my onan 4k for 6 years now. Be sure to run gen.
I also fill with 2 cans of seafoam gas in gas tank with non ethanol fuel....it also helps if you do this on the first day of vacation and run generator with a load...really cleans it
I removed my carb and cleaned in my ultrasonic cleaner the other day. What a PIA reinstalling. Lolol. I also adjusted the valves. I have a few more mods to do and button it up and try it out.
Good video. My 4000 Onan just stopped running like it wasn't getting any fuel. Turned out my fuel tank on the motor home was less than a quarter full. I filled the tank and the generator started right up. Apparently my unit has a shut off devise to the generator to prevent you from exhausting the RV fuel tank by running the generator too long.
There are some disagreements on this issue. Some mechanics say to not leave the carb dry on the Onan for too long; others say it is okay, but it is better to just put Stabil the fuel for storage. I use mine quite frequently year-round so, it is not an issue for me. I had just bought the RV when I made this video and it had been sitting for three years, so that is why I needed to clean it up.
@@thejungleexplorer more great information. Thanks. I just order a case os stabilizer so that should do the trick. I ordered a new carb but am trying your sea foam cleaning first.
The phillips headed screw at the base of the carb bowl opens the drain. Just open it and drain the carb anytime the machine is sitting unused for any long time.......You can also pull off the fuel line and use a hose and bottle to gravity feed something like Seafoam or WD-40 into the carb but is not a must. I had 2 4KY's and just drained them every winter......they ran fine in spring once brought back to life....
Thanks for the info. I’ve heard that its a good idea to run your generator once a month for about 30 minutes with a load to help keep the carburetor clean.
We have a one year old Onan 2800 on our 1 year old Winnebago Travato. Our generator at 11 hours of use began surging and dying. All previous use was just exercising the unit. I did attempt to do a cleaning with Seafoam in the gasoline and a few sprays or carburetor cleaner into the intake. Actually it would idle when spraying then surge and die. That did not work so we took it to the Onan sevice center. I was reluctant to take the time to do that as we have been told that Onan usually denies the warranty coverage. So they did a check and the called and said it was the carburetor would be warrenty covered. What a relief I did a happy dance! Then an hour later they called back and said “sorry we found residue in the bowl and that Onan would not warranty the repair”. The price for removing the unit and replacing the carburetor was said to be $961. I asked for a better price and they did agree to $650. So looks like what I have been reading all over the internet is true, if you put gas in your generator and follow the suggestions for keeping it exercised there still will be no warranty coverage for your $3,500 generator.
So sorry to hear this. I would contact Onan directly and talk to them about this. This does not seem right. If they refuse to do anything for you, remind them that there are plenty of review sites where you would rather not inform people about how bad their warranty and customer service is and that nobody needs bad press right now with the economy the way it is. Sometimes it helps to remind these companies that consumers now have a very loud voice on the internet.
@@trustme7731 Well if you go to Onan it will. I tried to clean the carb many different ways. I went so far as to buy a small gas tank to attach to it with pure gas. Did the seafoam thing too. I tried at least a half dozen ways to get it going and finally gave up.
hi, thanks for the info, I will have to try this on mine. by the way, do you have a link to the shut-off valve for this? this is what these gens are needing as to avoid gas from staying in carb. thanks in advance.
Thanks. Sorry, I do not have a link for the shutoff valve. I never made this conversion. Some other people have said they did this in the comments. You try reaching out to them to see what they used.
I did good but apparently I have a 100 hrs on it so it shuts off until it is serviced and they reset it with their secret code. One of those money sucking features. Your instructions were perfect. The red light was flashing 3x which means service. What threw me was the fuel hose was on with one of those fancy brackets. One of those one and done. I almost went and bought their fancy tool to put on another but finally said heck with it give me the regular brackets. Oetiker clamp! A lot of work getting it off.
There is no such thing as a secret code all you do is push the stop once and it will flash the code on why the gen shut down. Its basically just a check engine light. You can download a free service manual online for these and it will tell you what the flash codes mean. And when you push the stop once after a 3 flash service code then you can restart it. Like a 14 which is one flash pause then 4 quick flashes is over frequency which means it revved up to much and its protecting itself.
3 is the first number of the error code, then it does a second number. Example: flash, flash, flash, pause, flash X 6 times = Code 36 then refer to owners manual.
Hello sir thank you for the info I will try your way. It so happens to be the exact carburetor like mine, but my question to you or any one on the comments is what is the the top hose connected to the carburetor for ? I now the bottom hose every time I purge it shoots out gas but the top one doesn’t? Any idea what is its function? Please anyone have an idea ?
Hi. I hope the video helps you get your generator running right. This was not actually my rig. I was just helping a friend out. So, I am not sure which hos you are referring to.
@@thejungleexplorer oh ok it’s the carburetor on the video has to fuel hoses ? Or only 1 the bottom one when you prime it shoots out fuel but the top one doesn’t? Do you have an idea what that hose is used for ?
I just bout an RV with an Onan 2800 that had sat all winter not running or winterized and the generator surges up and down and up and down and over and over. I’m going to try your method, thanks! I was also thing of putting a fuel cut off under there too.
My carb was bad, wouldn't run at all without starter fluid. This didn't work for me, removing it and carb cleaner neither. If this fails, the $50 replacement carb on Amazon worked wonders for me and was probably faster as you can swap these out in 5-10 minutes once you know how.
I have a 467.3 for Georgie boy and I have a Onan genset emerald 1 and I'm having the same problem won't start about to take the car did the carburetor cleaner and all that on about to take it off and see if I could clean it and if that doesn't work then I am going to buy that carburetor from Amazon so I'll keep you guys posted to right now I did clean it when I opened out the air cleaner and took it all apart and had access to cleaning it spraying around it and that didn't work so now tomorrow I'm going to take it off I'll keep you guys posted and keep you know what's cooking as of right now it only starts when I spray it with starter fluid so the heat is on.lol
Each RV will be different, so the best I can say is to put it in the best place possible on the incoming fuel line. I wish I could be more helpful, but there are just too many makes and models for me to give you specific instructions.
The float bowl is removable and the jets can be cleaned. Problem is leaky crush washers when reassembly, replace or sand with 220 grit to flatten them out.
Will this process work with diesel? I just bought a used RV, it was running fine when I got it. I tried to start it yesterday and it won’t turn over. It has only been sitting a few days. I ran it for about 30 minutes before parking it and it worked fine. Thanks!
On mine I installed a splitter valve I line to the carburetor. Turn it left and it will draw from the RV tank turn it right and it will draw from a gas can like this. It's just permanently installed on the couch.
i good advice. but I'd rather not mess around with the fuel line so i think I'll wait till the tank is empty then add a gallon of gas and the seafoam to the tank and let it run.
I just came into a really nice, lightly used, long stored, cosmetically challenged, and a little dry rotted trailer. It has the onan 4ky-J gasoline generator, with 135 hours on it. I just got fuel going into the carb itself,a problem with the lines. The gas tank was empty and clean which I checked it with my boroscope. But anyway when I tired starting it there was gas blowing back into the air filter. With that low of hours I wouldn't think anything more than a cleaning would be necessary, but I'm unsure as to why gas is blowing back either. I'd appreciate any input.
Hi there, I have an older 4000 Onan Emerald plus and it won't even start to run the seafoam through- I imagine that I have to take to take it apart....?
Greetings:-) Can you help as to any knowledge/experience in conversion to propane... I understand they run cleaner and easier to start after sitting. Thanking you in advance, -keith
I do not recommend converting to propane in this situation for two reasons. 1. It reduces the generation capacity by about 25%. For example: If your generator is a 4000 watt gasoline unit, converting it to propane will reduce it to a 3000 watt unit. 2. It will increase the cost of operation. It will burn more propane to produce less power, thus increasing the cost to run it. This is not to mention that it you have a normal sized propane tank (my mini has a 10 gallon) you would have to fill you take constantly. Based on my own experience with converting gasoline generators to propane, a 5000 watt generator can run about 8 hours on 5 gal propane. So, if you have a 10 gal tank, you might get 24 hours if continuous operation out your generator before had to refill it. Of course this would mean pulling up stakes and driving to a propane refill place about once a day. This would further increase the cost of operation. If you still want to do it, you would need to buy a conversion kit. It is not complex to convert a gasoline engine to propane, but it is dangerous. A proper conversion kit will have the necessary safety equipment to make your installation safer.
@@thejungleexplorer Thank you for your advice. I was not aware of the negatives regarding propane. My main thinking was avoiding carrying gas. My truck is diesel. I do have two 30 gallon tanks. My thought was pretty much just for charging my batteries when necessary, not so much for running air condition. Typically I won't be boon docking, I'll be plugged in. Thanx my friend, -keith
I would love to bypass the fuel pump in the fuel filter I did not think of hooking it up straight to the carb as of right now I disconnected the line from the fuel pump and I have the hose running there but doesn't seem to be sucking it or priming it and it only runs when I spray it with starter fluid so I am going through the fuel pump right now and it's not even pumping I would like to fill up the fuel pump but I don't know how I'm going to look into hooking it up straight to the carb but I don't know where that line is how do you hook it up straight to the carb I have a quarter inch hose coming from my gas tank where do I put that at I'm going to have to investigate that tomorrow good point her good pointer thank you I am going through the fuel filter and the fuel pump right now and that's a problem because this generator has been sitting for about 5 years and it's pretty gunked up I'm assuming I was able to open up there cleaner and spray it down with B12 and carburetor cleaner stuff I was hoping that would work it but I think I'm going to have to take the carburetor off tomorrow but as of right now you gave me another great idea before I do that I'm going to see if I can hook up the line straight to the carb how I'll get fuel I don't know fuel pump pumps it from the tank into the carburetor so if I bypass the pump and the filter after like pour it in somehow figure it out it's full moon it's a beautiful July 15th 2022 evening I'm on top of my motorhome the moon just came out it's exactly 10:32 on a Wednesday evening the Moon is spectacular happy full moon to everybody and happy Wednesday working on my motorhome working on my generator and I'm learning a lot from watching all you guys so thank you for all the tips and pointers like everybody's saying we're able to save thousands of dollars doing it ourselves with all our youtubeographers videographers out there thanks for the tips and the pointers all you great generator professors how you teachers and then Spanish as we say maestro's Masters so thanks a lot keep you posted happy Wednesday
Great video but you didn't show when you adjusted the altitude screw on the front of the carb it you look the screw slot jumped from 1 o'clock to 10 o'clock position there is also a bowl drain right below that adjustment
Just use 87. They are low compression motors, and anything higher than 87 is just wasting money. It will NOT make it run better, or more efficient. 87 is perfect and what it was designed to use. Use 87....
@@thejungleexplorer I STRONGLY disagree - unless compression ratio dictates extra detonation supression , higher octane contributes nothing. These small utility engines certainly do not ( by intentional design) fall into that category.
I just bought a 2011 RV with an onan 4000 generator. When I try to prime it the light doesn't turn on. When I try to start it, there is no noise. I have studied but have not yet repaired: how to replace the filter, replace the spark plug, change the oil, and now I understand what you suggest in this video. Unfortunately I can't try what you suggest in this video until the generator can turn on. What would you suggest I try first?
Does the generator not try to start at all? If so, there may be several things that cause this. It is a process of elimination to figure out what the cause is. First make sure it has power. The generator starts off of the house battery, not the engine battery, so make sure the house battery is good. Second, some RV have an auxiliary generator kill switch located somewhere around the rear exit door. On my RV it is located down at the bottom of the lefthand side of the door. This switch allows you to kill the genny without having to climb up into the RV. It is easy to accidentally kick and if it is set to off, the genny will not turn on. If neither of these are the problem, then you need to check the power cables from the house battery to the genny. If they are good, then the problem is either the switch or the starter motor. I hope this helps.
@@thejungleexplorer The switch beside my backdoor was able to prime and then attempt to start the generator. It was unsuccessful in starting the generator but at least this switch gave the generator a try. Looks like I'll have a couple more steps here but your advice definitely did solve the first few steps in elimination towards fixing a few pieces. Thanks for the response.
@@makingcloudsofthought3006 Awesome. Glad I could help. If the genny tries to start, but won't stay running or runs rough, that definitely is a dirty carburetor problem. The genny draws gas from the main fuel tank. If this RV has been sitting for a while, the fuel may not be that good. The RV engine may be able to run on it but not the genny. I would siphon the tank empty and fill it up with premium gas with a standard mixture of SeaFaom. The RV engine fuel system may benefit from a good clean as well.
Isn't that the gas line coming up beside the oil dipstick? Couldn't you disconnect where the rubber meets the metal right before the carbonator? and avoid spillage ?
@@ketonobull1649 No the generator fuel pump is inside the generator enclosure. Exact location depends on model. Mine is left side and way back and on the bottom. Disconnect where the vehicle fuel line which is usually metal connects to the generator, at a rubber section. The rubber fuel line section line is used to isolate vibration. Get your model number and look up the manual online and it will show the fuel pump location if you cannot figure it out by visual observation.
I had been having problem finding a place to buy parts, can someone guide me on that pls, I have a 4500 commercial one and it looks like the motor is lock
Ok the generator is fixed - apparently the choke was - whatever you call it when it is up too high. New spark plug, adjusted choke and I am ready to hit the road. Bye bye Sheridan WY on to Iowa to pick up some Winnebago parts. Minor repairs.
THIS IS HOW I FIXED MINE, IN THE CASE OF.... "I CAN'T START MY GENERATOR" It's has been two years since last time it was running, so I started by checking oil level full at gen dipstick (it won't start if low oil because of sensors) then I checked gasoline more than 1\4 tank in the RV (also safety sensors), sparkplug checked for good spark, also checked the manual reset circuit braker ( to be ON) at front motorhome engine compartment for 12v current to the generator to be able to start it, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, then checked wires and found some has been chewed like gum by rats at the back of starting switch generator panel so I replaced them, at this time the generator started but stay running only by keep pushing the switch on all the time, so then finally I knew it was internal electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage, (I did this by myself with some tools and old Mayan tricks ) lol, it's really heavy for one person. I disassemble the unit at my garage and started by removing the cover, then the cooling fan or flywheel unit (it's 2 items in one) until finally I was at the gen rotor and brushes assembly area and this is what I found: one more wire chewed by filthy rats plus the stinky rat nest in the middle of the generator motor coil, I fixed the wire and sanded the commutator copper contacts where the brushes are sitting becouse they were real duty with old urine from the rats, and of course I got rid off the stinky nest, lol!!! Then I assembled everything back together and... bingo it's runing like a champion!!! For this project materials involved was about $60.00 including an aftermarket new carburetor and an harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller (available at any auto parts for $25.00) to pull the aluminum fan out and (flywheel). Just picture this: (Any gasoline engine run smooth if gasoline and DC current aren't interrupted) so following this important principle you'll always find the problem to be fixed. Also if you have a onan microlite 4000 like mine, don't run it for more than a minute without the cover because you'll cook the engine real fast, also keep the eye on the aluminium fan and your fingers after cranking it in case you missing one or two members...just kidding, lol!!! After testing the gen then I did put the air cooling assembly back and the rest of components including the cover, now it's ready to be installed at my RV. Once the gen was installed back at my motorhome I started it to be tested for electric power but not before flipping the electric switch (on) at the gen starting control panel (sometimes hiding under or around the panel) to transfer power to my RV GFCI main outlet and electric panel as well, my motorhome it's equipped with GFCI so I reset it and tested for green led light indicating power is ready at my main breakers panel, so I turned my main breaker (on) along the others ones but no power was present at my breaker main switch (faulty main braker) so I flipped it many times, sometimes you can make it work again, mine did work, lol!!! I'm happy because everything works now including the ref for cold drinks and AC for this crazy summer, lol! Later I'll buy me a new main braker, for now this is a resurrected generator story that needed to be shared. If this can help eaven one person to save time and $$$ it'll make me more happy, thanks for reading!!!
@@thejungleexplorer a Honda 3000 inverter not a bad choice remember at the end of the season run some premium gas and run the carb dry that is for any small engine you won't get bad deposits in the carburetor
Another one that never read the manual and has NO understanding. This is far easier than hand carrying a portable generator and gas cans. All small engines have the same problems if the owner knows and/or does nothing to maintain them. I have a Honda inverter and its quite fussy.
If it fixes the problem, what is wrong with that? Are you mad at what the video is, or are you mad because it was not what you want? It is best to drain the gas out when storing longer than a month. Modern gas has a short shelf life unless you mix in fuel stabilizers.
I buy a gallon jug of Sea Foam and dump it in my fuel tank once a year. Good for the generator and the engine
Thank you for commenting Eric Van Nostrand! I am so glad the video was helpful.
Thank you brother excited to try this
Thank you for this. This was exactly what I needed
Thought you had a crying baby in the background, realized it was a goat, lol. Good video, thanks
LOL! I never noticed the goat until you said this.
It isn't a warranty issue. Its a lack of maintenance and understanding on your part.
READ THE MANUAL !!
Also, a dirty carb does NOT need to be replaced.
@@trustme7731 I bought the 1 year old RV with this issue.
It never ceases to amaze me that people never read and understand the owners manual.
100 hours and a secret code. LOL
Definitely need to use stabil or something like it in the fuel tank to keep this from happening again!
👍
Thanks for commenting. I am so glad it helped.

Recommend using a clamp on the fuel line to prevent gas draining.
Good info
My carb was bad, wouldn't run at all without starter fluid. This didn't work for me, removing it and carb cleaner neither. If this fails, the $50 replacement carb on Amazon worked wonders for me and was probably faster as you can swap these out in 5-10 minutes once you know how.
Mine won't run without starter fluid either. Which Amazon store did you buy your carb from? How was the quality? Thanks
Thanks for the great teaching video!!!!
very good job well done sir
Where in the fuel line would you put the shutoff valve?
Each RV will be different, so the best I can say is to put it in the best place possible on the incoming fuel line. I wish I could be more helpful, but there are just too many makes and models for me to give you specific instructions.
Very good video. My experience with these carbs is that they are sealed units and cannot be opened. As a result, replacement is the only fix
The float bowl is removable and the jets can be cleaned. Problem is leaky crush washers when reassembly, replace or sand with 220 grit to flatten them out.
Can you do this with a diesel 3600? If so, I’m assuming you’d use diesel in the gas can? Thanks!
I don't see why not.
Ok I'm done with the task, ran for 2 20 minute sessions. Is it ok to leave the concentrated mix in the carb bowl over night?
Not advisable. I would run regular gas in for a bit to clean it out.
@@thejungleexplorer thanks
Great info! I’m now a subscriber.
Will this process work with diesel? I just bought a used RV, it was running fine when I got it. I tried to start it yesterday and it won’t turn over. It has only been sitting a few days. I ran it for about 30 minutes before parking it and it worked fine. Thanks!
I believe so
On mine I installed a splitter valve I line to the carburetor. Turn it left and it will draw from the RV tank turn it right and it will draw from a gas can like this. It's just permanently installed on the couch.
That is a great idea. I thought about doing the same. Glad to know it works good for you.
Can you tell me exact model splitter valve part you used? I want to try it

good advice. but I'd rather not mess around with the fuel line so i think I'll wait till the tank is empty then add a gallon of gas and the seafoam to the tank and let it run.
👍
Great Video, Thanks
You are welcome
I just came into a really nice, lightly used, long stored, cosmetically challenged, and a little dry rotted trailer. It has the onan 4ky-J gasoline generator, with 135 hours on it. I just got fuel going into the carb itself,a problem with the lines. The gas tank was empty and clean which I checked it with my boroscope. But anyway when I tired starting it there was gas blowing back into the air filter. With that low of hours I wouldn't think anything more than a cleaning would be necessary, but I'm unsure as to why gas is blowing back either. I'd appreciate any input.
Man, I would have itr looked at. I don;t know what might cause that.
Hi there, I have an older 4000 Onan Emerald plus and it won't even start to run the seafoam through- I imagine that I have to take to take it apart....?
Yeah, sounds like you might to clean the carb out to get it at least to run.

Where would you recommend buying a brand new carburetor on a 44000 microquiet gas generator
Sorry, I did not see this comment until now hope it all worked out
I have the same genarator does it have a oil filter?
Mine does not.
Thanx my friend, -keith
how do I know what size auxillary hose from gas can to use?
It will depend on the size of your system.
Is there a specific reason you didn't hook the hose right to the carb instead of going underneath?
It is much easier to do it this way.
That would bypass the fuel pump and fuel filter.
Good info. Thanks for sharing
Why not cut the fuel line right where it's going into the carb? Then do the treatment and put a shutoff valve in for future.
Yes, you can do it that way too.
Because you need the fuel pump. The good gas needs to go in the line before the fuel pump, not after it.
Whats best octane to use 91 or 87??
91 is higher
Just use 87. They are low compression motors, and anything higher than 87 is just wasting money. It will NOT make it run better, or more efficient. 87 is perfect and what it was designed to use. Use 87....
Higher is better
@@thejungleexplorer
I STRONGLY disagree -
unless compression ratio dictates extra detonation supression , higher octane contributes nothing.
These small utility engines certainly do not ( by intentional design) fall into that category.

The non rebuildable Onan carb is such a scam that Onan-Cummins has been doing for many many years. Anyone know of a rebuildable replacement?
Like lost things now days, they want you to buy a new one. 😢
Was your generator really not working? Or were you just showing this as an example?
It was surging before the treatment
What do you do if yours won't start?
Sounds like you might need a new carburetor
Isn't that the gas line coming up beside the oil dipstick? Couldn't you disconnect where the rubber meets the metal right before the carbonator? and avoid spillage ?
You have to get on the pickup side of the fuel pump. That location is after the fuel pump.
@@BADBRAD1959 Thanks, I tried where I said, and of course that did not work. So is the fuel pump up by the motor? 2014 Ford F53 chassis.
The way I demonstrated works the best
You can run 2 to 1 gas to Sea Foam.

THIS IS HOW I FIXED MINE, IN THE CASE OF....
"I CAN'T START MY GENERATOR"
It's has been two years since last time it was running, so I started by checking oil level full at gen dipstick (it won't start if low oil because of sensors) then I checked gasoline more than 1\4 tank in the RV (also safety sensors), sparkplug checked for good spark, also checked the manual reset circuit braker ( to be ON) at front motorhome engine compartment for 12v current to the generator to be able to start it, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, then checked wires and found some has been chewed like gum by rats at the back of starting switch generator panel so I replaced them, at this time the generator started but stay running only by keep pushing the switch on all the time, so then finally I knew it was internal electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage, (I did this by myself with some tools and old Mayan tricks ) lol, it's really heavy for one person.
