Power from a nearly totally dead battery.
This Joule Thief work at a very very low input voltage from 0.035 to 0.080 volts and the output voltage is 2.7 volts, to the LED. An ordinary Joule Thief work down to 0.6 to 0.8 volts, because of losses in the transistor.
This transistor STN841 is a low drop type.
Correction Transistor: 2 is the collector and emitter is 3.

Correction: Transistor STN851 terminal 2 is the Collector and Emitter is 3.

Have you noticed that the LED is connected between the Collector and the Base. Provides more voltage to the LED.
Not between Emitter and Collector as usual.

Nicolas Q.M.
NPN transistor's collector should be connected to the positive pole. That is how it works.
I would probably refer to this as a tuned base oscillator. The "BIg coil" provides the base bias and also the feedback signal and inherent between the turns the stray capacitance provides the Capacitor while the 60 turns provide the inductance for resonance. The small coil in the collector drives the "secondary tuned circuit" . I would say that it is a pulse oscillator.
I would say that the pulse fed back to the base is so high that the base breaks down in its Zener region. I wonder. It is not as simple as it looks, Congratulations.
It's a little beauty !
Smart you seem to have magnet on the wire you set on minus. Thumbs up.
can you connect peltier tiles instead of the old battery to the joule thief which uses very very low input voltage?
Hey man, Watch out! You have connected reverse polarity to the NPN transistor
Your video sharing is very well explained and easy to understand to build. Many thanks
instead of STN841 you can take a germanium transistor , the gemanium BE Diode make a break from 0.2 volt or 0.1 volt upward , but on the other side , if you give a kick with any voltage like 0.035 volt ,it flows at first in the coil , make a indutivity ,after the break down of the magnetfleld it make the start kick voltage for the transistor , then he is oscilate , it s possible that it need more start-help by closing the battery more times
That is a beautiful diagram.
This circuit + radio crystal circuit = light without batteries. Just radio signal. :3
@Norberto Rozzi You know google translate exists right?
Why is minus going to the collector? Positive to emitter? 1, 2, 3 is right but B, E, C is not B, C, E is right.
1=B , 2=C , 3=E !
WOW! A silicon bipolar transistor finally beat my 60mv Germanium one. Well done, and very nice find with the transistor. Is that a 35mv start up? Do you know of any other low dope silicon transistors? Or how I would search for them?
As far as I know I have been holding the low voltage bipolar JT record for some time with this Ambient Solar Harvester Starts Ossilating From 60mv. There are also a few depletion mode JFET models that go a bit lower.
I'm happily handing over the low voltage bipolar JT record. Nice work!

Seach Google" Very low collector to emitter saturation voltages"
I did notice the led position. I do that sometimes too :) Worked it out after I looked at a few reverse JT's with led from emitter to base. Strangely c-b is not always brighter, sometimes it shortens the duration of the pulse, and you are better off using the capacitance of the coil to lengthen the pulse a bit. C-e is great if chasing a little extra voltage though, or if base wind is very long.
Thanks for the search tip :) Brought up a ton of datasheets :D

Hello
Can I know the specification for your toroid core? How many turns? And also which modification is the determine factor for your this joule thief to be other than the normal joule thief?
interesting! Vbe]DC =0.035
Normally, the Joule Thief oscillator will NEVER start with Vbe =0.035v !
Somehow a battery if a transient is introduced , causing the base-emitter coil :
Vbe]transient -> 0.6v , then oscillation can occur .
BUT HOW is the transient introduced ?
He's not not a Joule Chief, he's a Joule thief! lol
Congratulations, you just won the internet for correcting someone.
@@Elnufo I didn't do this to get anything out of it. It's good to correct people.
@@Berghiker he isnt a native english speaker, that makes the correction somewhat pointless i think. dunno
@@Elnufo It always depends on the person if they are eager to always learn more.
time to drain completly baterry ?
Where in the world can you get a STN841 from? All I found was a 2SA841 and without a datasheet for the STN841 no way of knowing if that is the same or close.
The Best Stooge YOU JUST HAVE TO GOOGLE ST851
@@bjl1000 I wasn't able to find anything on either of those numbers or a replacement for it, I don't know if Mouser would be able to find one for it or not.
I can find an STN851 (which is a SOT-223) but not an STN841...can you advise where the STN841 is available from or if there is an alternative designation?
Please determine the exact size of the toroid ferrite core in mm
Hello
Very nice 👍
Is ther a version to buy that's already build (small for a flashlight) or a spool that's ready build?
I can`t wind them myself because of my condition. 🤔
As I can see the coil you're using by the looks of it not even a 60 turns...
Neat project! But 2.7vdc is not enough for my white LEDs. I need about 3.2vdc for my LEDs.
Chuck Roberts just follow the schematic youll be alright...
Try increasing the 60-turn to 90
Good, great, excellent....,,,.. Uhm where can I get the coil(toroid)
What type of transistor is? Never heard of him!
I did the same but with a FZT-651 BJT, I checked for a very similar Transistor as yours, but I didn't do with a capacitor between the positive and negative why did you use it? I know it works as a fast switching device, will this feature improve something in any way?
I've tried this every component i could and try to make everything exactly the same but still not working...would you kindly advise is it really working and where is my mistake?
HomeMade DIY HowTo Electronic I know right I don't believe the insulated wire will transfer power from the magnet wire
@larskro can I use 2N2222 or C1815 in replacement for stn841?
If yes, then what will be the minimum Voltage for the input of these transistors?
next 0.001mv to bright led free light
sir my circuit is working once and then it stop working.
i am using four peltier tiles
Why using capacitor?
because of the transient ?

@@martinmartinmartin2996mayby drops to this voltage because battery have high resistance and capacitor is for start this circut
yes it is the other way round :)
Try with 10 watt led sir
ops! wrong circuit diagram.
Can i use another transistor
Like you can do something with that light!!!!! lol
Hi Larskro, can you please explain how you picked the value for the capacitor? Per example what would happen if the capacitor had a lower value or higher value
r16203 The capacitor must be big - bigger better. Only stabilize the voltages from the battery. Because of the high pulses from the circuit.
Thank you Larskro . So what does limit the voltage in your circuit, I see you have 0.08V max and 0.035V min? How do you calculate the min and max? Is it possible to have a max of 0.25V?
No. If the voltage is more than 0.08v, the transistor will burn. The current will bee very high about 0,5 amp.
Larskro will it still work if you would change the transistor to a power transistor and add a voltage multiplier or change the amount of windings?
Brand ferrite ring, as?
i did that but why im getting AC output not DC
is it normal or i did something wrong
Add silicon diode and capacitor
If we provide input 1.5 volt AA battery?
the whole universe will blow up. Dont do that.
C.E.B ???
Hi sir! I only have this little toroid from an old cpu (inner diam = 0.7cm, outer diam= 1.3cm. Would this affect the circuitry?
Tots Clemente no Sir
OMG 0.035V!
Szerintem ez nem működik. Rossz a kapcsolási rajz.
I have some solar cells the make .5v and 3.6 amps but I want it to output 5v at least 1 amp
3 years later I come in to read your comment. A good rule of thumb is take the output voltage wanted then divide that by the input voltage provided = X. Current provided divided by X is roughly the max you will get at the output. In your case ~360ma.
@@generalawareness101 yeah lol what I meant was I connected 10 cells in parallel to get what I wanted 5v and 3.6 amps to change my phone
@@nightmareinaction629 The outcome would be the same. 0.5v at 3.6A is the same as 5v at 360mA which would be your ten solar cells in parallel vs in series.
You can find the transistor here. www.ebay.com/itm/STMICROELECTRONICS-STN851-TRANSISTOR-NPN-SOT-223-/390942772111?hash=item5b06014b8f:g:X4kAAOxyd8NSa8E0
Sir, is any other BJT we can use in place of transistor STN 851 ??
The joule chief can work with all small transistor. But the volt is higher.
Have you a better low drop, high gain, small transistor, so let me know thanks.
Larskro
Thank you sir
You can try PBSS4350T, PBSS4540Z or PBSS2515F. Or another so called "BISS Transistor".
Hello
if i have a circuit in resonance case
how can i test resonance ( is there any device to do that ?
new man Resonance is a circuit that involve inductors and capacitors set at proportional to each other, in specific ratios. It is NOT a simple straight forward ratio proportionality. Reactance of capacitances and inductors will need to be determined. If you are using and android phone now , you can download the "Mobile electrician" APP to calculate those proportionality ratios of L and C under basic in that app. However, to setup resonating inductors and capacitance you will need and OSCILLOSCOPE and a FUNCTION GENERATOR unfortunate......Heeeeeeeeeee.....and those instrument are quite expensive my friend ......Heeeeeeee........and Most electricians will NOT allow an amateur to lay their hand on those device, hence if something can go wrong paying for the damage can be a problem.....Portable LCR METER are NOT very accurate for resonant. I am on your path friend....that is why I am also planning to by set very soon. However if you purchase those device on your own some companies in some countries will alert government bureaucrats to keep an eye on you in case you are one of the "free energy" guru like me. So be aware and careful on your projects.....Cheers!
Is there any way to increase the current at the output side to say atleast 70-80mA?
Can i personally talk to you... Any mail id for contacting you?
Whats the highest voltage can it handle? i want to power a high power LED not 5mm trash
Better question is about current
@@dax4_3dom78 I still have my original joulethief somewhere that I built if I remember it was useful at very narrow voltage, thing is if you want to use a super cap with a crank generator, there needs to be a variable resistor, honestly preferably some type of smart resistor circuit that would always allow the same amount of current through (what I assume you’re talking about), because a super cap will dump everything at once and most LED have enough resistance in themselves to handle the raw voltage, but for long term and if you don’t want to destroy it and you want it to run for a long time, resistance I these needs to always be controlled, another question is how many windings, how thick the wire etc. I personally noticed that adding a magnet to the coil made my light considerably brighter.
Fake !! Transistor can't work under 0.7 v ..
