  • How to Make a Homemade PVC Pipe Battery. Ok! I replicate "LaserSaber" copper-magnesium-water or Aqua battery and i'm not very happy for the first result. This video i will show a homemade battery. I used deionized water and Soda Alum. Result two tablespoons with soda is about few hours of electricity "energy". Now i have the body of this battery to experiment with it, if you know some better materials or liquid would like to write your opinion...

An electric battery is a device consisting of two or more electrochemical cells that convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy. Each cell has a positive terminal, or cathode, and a negative terminal, or anode. The terminal marked positive is at a higher electrical potential energy than is the terminal marked negative. The terminal marked negative is the source of electrons that when connected to an external circuit will flow and deliver energy to an external device. When a battery is connected to an external circuit, electrolytes are able to move as ions within, allowing the chemical reactions to be completed at the separate terminals and so deliver energy to the external circuit. It is the movement of those ions within the battery which allows current to flow out of the battery to perform work. Although the term battery technically means a device with multiple cells...

A fair amount of money, time and material went to make the battery. The voltage is what would be expected from the chemistry but the current was underwhelming.
Optimizing electrolyte strength, electrode distance and surface area will surely improve its power output.
Current is in part effected by distance between electrodes, their surface area, and the electrolyte conductivity and temperature.
    1) Electrode distance could be improved by using a paper separator. Having the electrodes close together lowers the battery's internal resistance.
    2) Your cell was using approximately just 1/2 the electrode surface area. The spiral guide was blocking ionic currents between electrodes. You likely would have done better winding on a pvc tube without the spiral guid. Many designs use plates for electrodes roled around each other to use the plate area on both sides of the electrodes.
    3) either find a table of concentration /conductivity for your electrolyte, or make one for yourself. Make a probe that tests conductivity of various electrolyte concentrations. You may try taking two graphite electrodes and attach them to something that will hold them a constant distance apart and cover up with glue, epoxy or wax, all but 1/2 inch of each electrode. Attach the electrodes to a 3.3v of a computer power supply with an inline amp meter. 3.3 volts because the current will be reasonably low for testing and less likely to change the temperature of the electrolyte. Use 3 or more glasses with varying electrolyte strengths. Add exactly the same amount of water to each glass, and a varying amount of your electrolyte (sodium aluminium sulfate in your case). Label each with the concentration used. Record the highest current conducting concentration and the concentrations just above and below it. Dump, clean, and repeat your testing with your new ranges with the minimum and maximum concentration recorded from your lest set of tests.
If the highest conductivity is found in either the minimum or maximum concentration, then use the two highest conduction concentration and repeat the test with concentrations between the two highest conducting and another on the other side of the highest conducting concentration.
. The point of all this is to find the highest conducting concentration providing the lowest internal resistance. Make sure your water is all from the same source at the same temperature room temperature.

That's a beautiful job!! You may have forgotten to protect your magnesium anode. It will be eaten away very fast!!! Give it a coating of a mixture of ZnO and MnO2 if you are looking for a long lasting magnesium ion battery. Or coat it with MgH2 or MgCO3 which are both conductive and protective.

lol it's a fun project but it's completely useless in reality. The cost of those materials, the fact that the metals will corrode and are therefore a consumable, the cost of the salt and water..
It would be better for the environment and cheaper for this guy to just buy rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride batteries.
Like I say, a fun project but your comment is silly :P

it does not matter how big the cell is .. the cell will make approximative 100 ma of current and 1.5volt dc voltage average . the key is to make many small tiny cells like the one you built and put them in series. what you have shown in the video is only one cell . make two cells put them in series you have 3volt dc but still 100 ma current. the way a fuel cell stack works is the idea . many micro cells in series to get high voltage low current now you can do more work with the energy.

Unfortunately it's been done many times at least 10 years ago by a bunch of us eexperimenters and it is galvanic and the magnesium eats itself up in no time when pulling power from it
.there is a much better way that last longer and that is encase the coils is a melted mixture of chemicals like alum epsomsalt carbon and when melted creates a hard ceramic shell that will absorb moisture in the air in such small amounts that it will last 100 times longer. I call it a solid state crystal air battery.

this is not the lithium battery or rechargeable battery. It is direct current flow. So, when the positive charge and negative charge are equiblirium, then, there will be no more flow of current and electron
