@EinsteinsMuse - Hi, acrylic medium and gel medium are often the same thing. What most people use is actually called "acrylic gel medium" which can be glossy or matte. It comes in different weights such as as heavy, regular and soft. Regular is probably a good one to start with. Brands include Golden, Liquitex, or Winsor & Newton. Most art shops will stock these - in Melbourne, try Senior Art Supplies (you can also order online, and they stock Golden products) or Eckersley's. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the video , have yet to try this technique. Could you please link where you bought the impasto gel. Would you recommend a low priced gel from amazon please.
Found this today. I have been dithering. lol. I have a few vintage photo's of my great grandfather in uniform. Handsome man in French uniform, i would love to use in a tech like this but I needed a boost. thank You! Very easy to understand.
@CapricornArtist73 I love your work you are such a talented artiest ..... This technique is really cool ... however I have a canon mp640 and don't seem to have a setting for printing on transparency film do you mind my asking what printer you are using or maybe suggest one I could look into ? thank you ...
hi i used mod podge to put a picture on wood.. but unfortunately it didnt work. Do i need to get a gell glue as u have . what is the difference... please this is urgent special present im trying to make.
That is Awesome! I really like the way you did it too, I've been looking for a way that didn't use mod podge and involve a water and sponge. This looks so much better. I want to try on canvas to make Christmas presents early. Any tips on putting a photo on Canvas? Thanks so much and have a Great Weekend :)
Fabulous tutorial.I can't wait to try it.Off to the shops to buy all the materials today.I hope I can find the goodies in my country. We really suffer in this place.Loved your tutorial thanks so much!!
Great video so glad you can use inkjet and acrylics. May I ask what happens to the negative area of the image. Does the medium gel show on the background or does it just stick to the ink of the transfer? So if you add different images in layers does the medium build up on the background surface? Also if you add a layer does the medium effect the bottom layer? Thanks
Is transparency paper the same as projector paper? I am trying to figure out when there is a major distinction in quality. I see this inkjet transparency paper is usable on projectors by the looks of it.
can u reuse the transfer sheet? do you think you could do this with warm wax instead of gel? I think i may try this with my encaustic , maybe warm the wax surface a bit first, well i will try it and let ya know i guess. cool technique!
HI Gary many thanks for your video, it is so well done. using this process how does the gel leave the paper it is transferred onto? and can it be used on watercolour without leaving the paper stiff?
Awesome tutorial....can't wait to try this! Quick question....the transfer image appears to have a sheen. I prefer a matte finish on my completed artwork. Shall I use a matte gel medium as a transfer medium?
Hello Gary! I really really like your art piece!!!! How did you manage to get such crisp and clear result?? I've tried using different transparencies and varied the amount of gel but alot of the ink remained on the transparency and only patches were transferred ): but when i pressed down in the transparency it will start smudging after awhile ): help me pleaaase!
Having trouble finding any kind of Gel Medium.. I have found an 'Acrylic Medium' but I think it's for thinning paint. Could you suggest a particular craft store I might try (Melbourne, Australia)?
I used an inkjet transparency but like the person below, the transparency sticks so hard to it and when I peel it, it's all ruined, what am I missing? I'm using the Liquitex gel medium brand.
I realize this video is pretty old, but I have a question about the decorative cardstock paper. Is it possible to transfer those images to wood or any other porous object? I would like to use the images to decorate different pieces of furniture.
Hi, I was wondering have you ever printed on acetate with full color photograph images? I seem to rarely find any examples like this other then in black and white, and images in color seem to only be vector images.
Hi! I enjoyed your tutorial, but I'm in a bit of a pickle! I'm using Grafix Computer Film transparency and using gel medium. I just tried, before I found your tutorial, to do the transfer onto a pearlized cardstock and the ONLY thing to happen (well actually a couple of things) was when burnishing with a wooden tongue depressor or popsicle stick, was that a pinkish-tinged ooze, oozed out and barely a ghost image was present. If I leave this longer, do you think I'll get a transfer?? I'm TRYING so hard to create something for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary on a canvas and I'm so lost and just freaking out because I have no idea what I'm doing! I was pushed into this by family who have it in their heads I'm artistic 😳! I'm really under a ton of pressure and can't figure out what I'm to do on my canvas! Please tell me this image transfer will work!! You can't begin to know how happy I'll be even if this one tiny thing comes out!! Thank you in advance for any help/advice! And, thank you for sharing! P.S. Love your work!!
Hi Gary, and thanks for the tutorial! Can you transfer a image using this technique, on the reverse of a plastic transparent surface? I want to make a personal pickguard for my guitar
Not sure if anyone has asked this yet or not, but can you use this technique to transfer an image to an acrylic plastic panel or is there a better method?
Thank you for your video!!! This is the best one that I have seen so far for image transfer with inject printer. Is the image or the paper still sticky...since you use glue at begining...??
Thank you Gary for the video tutorial, I know this has been asked before but it hasn't been answered yet I don't think, can the plastic film be used again either to do a transfer or can you paint on it with acrylics? Cheers!
Mhairie Lee unfortunately it can’t be used again. It had a slight film on the plastic itself which is removed when you transfer the image, so as a result it can’t be reused.
Hi there! I'm looking to just wife all ink off of transparency paper, no transfer necessary. Could you provide me with some good cleaning or removal products for this task? I would really appreciate it :) This was a great vid thumbs up!
just wondering, can you then use the transparency film again or is it a one use type deal? If any one here knows i'd really like an answer ^^ rather not waste materials!
This is really excellent, thank you! I really love the colors you used in the background of that one. Once you have transferred your image - since you used inkjet, can you add more on top of this transferred image or will the image run if you got it wet? Or does the paste keep it locked in after its dry?
win! I am so trying this! I always get fuzzy paper stuff left over that I can't get rid of from gel medium transfers when I do paper/magazines and this looks better and more realistic. Thank you so much for sharing this.
No, glue you can use just if you leave the transparent paper glued but if you want to transfer the image then you need medium gel GOLDEN brand. You can use an acetate paper but might not work to transfer so I recommend transfer ink paper for your printer.
I don't think I got the right kind of gel. It was $25 for a bottle. I'm doing multi-color and it's not transferring very well, particularly the black, which isn't coming off at all.
i tried this technique today, with not great success I used laser print, both coloured and black...back was semi effective, but colour did not work??? it is better with injet printer or laser?
Ignore the negative comments. Good "How to". Paying with different stuff on my wood carvings, and will try this technique. Thanks .
How did it work on your wood I want to do it on a painted dresser

If I print onto wood do I need to prep the wood before adding a gel medium, by sanding for example?
@CapricornArtist73
I love your work you are such a talented artiest ..... This technique is really cool ... however I have a canon mp640 and don't seem to have a setting for printing on transparency film do you mind my asking what printer you are using or maybe suggest one I could look into ? thank you ...
Very interesting technique to produce multiple layers, very nicely done...
hi i used mod podge to put a picture on wood.. but unfortunately it didnt work. Do i need to get a gell glue as u have . what is the difference... please this is urgent special present im trying to make.

Are you able to use two photos on top of it like the second one being transparent? Of course one at a time
Thank you Gary for sharing such a simple, yet good technique..!.. Have you tried to reuse the films, ...after a good wash, of course!...
Fabulous tutorial.I can't wait to try it.Off to the shops to buy all the materials today.I hope I can find the goodies in my country. We really suffer in this place.Loved your tutorial thanks so much!!
Finally, tutorial for inkjet transfers to wood or anything else! Thank you!!! Can't wait to try it
I want to transfer onto furniture will this work will it bleed if sprayed with a clear spray
❤How do you protect the images.
great demo, thank you! Glad I found you, looking forward to seeing more of your instruction.
what type of paper did you use for the art work? My first attempt failed....paper tore
Thanks for this tutorial! Just one question. Can i print on and use the same film for a few times or just one? It it reusable?
Igor Sh the whole point is that the ink comes off,so no not reusable🤣
Great video so glad you can use inkjet and acrylics. May I ask what happens to the negative area of the image. Does the medium gel show on the background or does it just stick to the ink of the transfer? So if you add different images in layers does the medium build up on the background surface? hello and thanks for the nice helpful video.
what do you prefer to print the image, a laser- or a inkjet printer??
thank you!
Is transparency paper the same as projector paper? I am trying to figure out when there is a major distinction in quality. I see this inkjet transparency paper is usable on projectors by the looks of it.
Brilliant! Can you use color, or just black?
Wonder if this would work on fabric...
This is great! Thanks for sharing! Have you tried this technique on any fabric?
Can you use it on glass?
can u reuse the transfer sheet? do you think you could do this with warm wax instead of gel? I think i may try this with my encaustic , maybe warm the wax surface a bit first, well i will try it and let ya know i guess. cool technique!
HI Gary many thanks for your video, it is so well done. using this process how does the gel leave the paper it is transferred onto? and can it be used on watercolour without leaving the paper stiff?
wow! very nice!!! but is this will work on acrylic sheet?
I was thinking that using a small brayer to spread the medium?
Awesome tutorial....can't wait to try this! Quick question....the transfer image appears to have a sheen. I prefer a matte finish on my completed artwork. Shall I use a matte gel medium as a transfer medium?
Brilliant tutorial. Had a few frustrations with this technique before now. Hopefully will be much better next time. Xx
I assume you can do this to an old Mirror?
Thank you, great video. Does this work on canvas? Just curious, can you print on the transparency again?
Do you coat your receiving paper with anything? My transparency keeps sticking and peeling off my receiving paper. No idea what i'm doing wrong:(
TY for sharing! Love your art!
Absolutely love your work table: all those colors totally yell of your love for art! You are no novice ,-)
Thank you for sharing this with us! That was very sweet of you!!
South Africa
Nice--- can this be done onto ceramic tiles or other smooth surfaces? Is acetate a must or would an outlined image printed onto paper work also?
I tried doing a transfer onto ceramic tiles using transparency film and Liquitex matte medium and it didn't work.
Thank you for showing this wonderfull technique, love transparencies so much and this one with the skull is great!
Having trouble finding any kind of Gel Medium.. I have found an 'Acrylic Medium' but I think it's for thinning paint. Could you suggest a particular craft store I might try (Melbourne, Australia)?
I should clarify - when I said "add more" - I mean not more transfers, I mean more layers with paint or ink.
Thanks :-D
I used an inkjet transparency but like the person below, the transparency sticks so hard to it and when I peel it, it's all ruined, what am I missing? I'm using the Liquitex gel medium brand.

Finally, someone doing transfers with an inkjet! Thanks for this vid Gary, ive saved it...wicked studf. Im already a subbie. Hugs Tibs xxx

Did you use an inkjet printer to print your design? what type of Transparency Film did you use?
Brilliant... I shall try this.
Hi Gary, and thanks for the tutorial! Can you transfer a image using this technique, on the reverse of a plastic transparent surface? I want to make a personal pickguard for my guitar
very good idea .easy to do, everybody can easily try
Not sure if anyone has asked this yet or not, but can you use this technique to transfer an image to an acrylic plastic panel or is there a better method?
Can u do this on canvas?
Thank you so much amazingly so cool
Thank you for a reply, it's a shame it can't be reused, and thank you for sharing another way of being creative. Cheers!
Hello,
How long do you leave your picture after printing before transferring it to another material?
Thanks Gary for making the video. Really helpful.
If you clean the sheet after you've used it, can you use them more than once to reprint?
this should work with full color? no??
Thank you for your video!!! This is the best one that I have seen so far for image transfer with inject printer.
Is the image or the paper still sticky...since you use glue at begining...??
hi mate does this work with plastic surface as well?.
I believe you can reuse the transparencies as many times as you wish! Just clean them with rubbing alcohol between uses.
Great technique can't wait to try it
Can you use a image from a laser jet printer? Thanks!
This is great u make it supper easy then other tutorials thanks
Great video mate!, does it work with a laser printer?
Wow, that's a fantastic transfer, thanks very much for the tutorial!
Just wondering, as you live in Norway, do you speak Norwegian (fluently) as I am an artist who lives in Holland but can speak both English and Dutch.
Thank you Gary for the video tutorial, I know this has been asked before but it hasn't been answered yet I don't think, can the plastic film be used again either to do a transfer or can you paint on it with acrylics? Cheers!
Mhairie Lee unfortunately it can’t be used again. It had a slight film on the plastic itself which is removed when you transfer the image, so as a result it can’t be reused.
what kind of surfaces does this work on? any metals, plastic or anything you would find out in the streets? >.
I see most of the ink left the transparency. I'm assuming you could reuse that transparency later..?
Very well done! Been searching for a simpler way of creating transfers. Thank you.
Can you do this image transfer to canvas as well as paper?
i have a laser printer..do u think that type of ink would work on an ink jet transparency film sheet, to print on & transfer??
Hi there! I'm looking to just wife all ink off of transparency paper, no transfer necessary. Could you provide me with some good cleaning or removal products for this task? I would really appreciate it :) This was a great vid thumbs up!
wow what a neat tecnique! Thanks for sharing,
just wondering, can you then use the transparency film again or is it a one use type deal?
If any one here knows i'd really like an answer ^^ rather not waste materials!
I wonder if It's possible to use on fabrics

and then can you reuse the transparency film?
Does Any Kind Of Printer Can Print The Film?
Why use paper when transparency peels off so easily? I’m I missing something?
this tutorial is just what i was looking for! thanks for sharing this technique, i can't wait to give it a try!!!
how would you protect the image ? clear coat? laquer?
Can you reuse these ?
Thank you for this video !!
just wondering if gel medium could be used
win! I am so trying this! I always get fuzzy paper stuff left over that I can't get rid of from gel medium transfers when I do paper/magazines and this looks better and more realistic. Thank you so much for sharing this.
THANK YOU FOR A GREAT Transfer method!
Is there any alternative for that gel? I'm not sure that I can find that kind of stuff in my country...
Modge podge
No, glue you can use just if you leave the transparent paper glued but if you want to transfer the image then you need medium gel GOLDEN brand. You can use an acetate paper but might not work to transfer so I recommend transfer ink paper for your printer.
Modge Podge will paste it but it won't transfer an image.
can i transfer image to metal sheet alsi by this technique????
Does it work for canvas ?
THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING..GOING TO GIVE IT A TRY!!!
Can you re-use the transparency and print on it again?
do you know if this would work on fabric??
Will this work on wood by any chance?
Gary can you use this on Canvas type material please
Does this work with a laser printer?
Does the print have to be fresh? I sprung for the inkjet compatible transparency sheets.
I don't think I got the right kind of gel. It was $25 for a bottle. I'm doing multi-color and it's not transferring very well, particularly the black, which isn't coming off at all.
You can use Mod Podge to decoupage / adhere decorative paper to wood.
i tried this technique today, with not great success I used laser print, both coloured and black...back was semi effective, but colour did not work??? it is better with injet printer or laser?
He was using inkjet in the video.
