How to Distress and Age Magazine Pages for Your Collage and Mixed Media Work
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 чер 2024
- Today's video is a mini-course in how to distress, degloss, and age magazine pages to use in your work - your art journals, junk journals, collage, altered books, and other mixed media projects. If you've seen my videos you know that I tend to use original vintage paper and other pieces in my work but recently I learned a technique that changed the way I look at humble magazine pages and how to turn them into gorgeous, distressed, one of a kind beautiful pages.
This is Part 1 and it it includes techniques for taking the shiny gloss off of your papers, adding coffee or ink wash for a patina, overpainting, and adding texture with stencils.
I'll be back next week with Part 2, how to make magazine pages into momagami, soft, fabric-like papers using a Japanese kneading technique.
Please subscribe to my channel and be sure and turn on the notifications and let me know if you have any questions or feedback.

What grit of sandpaper or sanding block do you use?
@@calvinsmyth Hi Calvin. I don't know the grade but in a perfect world I go with the finest one I can find. More often I just use what's around or at Poundland or whatnot and make it work but if you can find it or order it, a fine tooth or grain will be softer but effective.
@@BookandPaperArts Thank you!
I'm totally in love with these techniques! Can't wait to catch Part 2.
Thank you, Patricia. I hope you make gorgeous papers! Kelly
Amazing effects! I avoided magazine pages because of the gloss. Now you've turned them into a gold mine of potentially gorgeous images for me! Thank you for all of these creative ways to distress and age them. Brilliant!!! Looking forward to your next video with anticipation!
Hi Nicki. I understand. I only found this technique a month ago and it changed everything about how I felt about using glossy papers in my work. Also, it is weirdly versatile. I hope you make great pages!
I'd never have thought of using a rough cleaning sponge and I have to say I tried it out on a glossy page I had and it worked amazingly! Great tips, thankyou!
Crazy, no? The technique I learned this from used a sanding block but when I tried it I was on holiday and working in the kitchen and yup, there was the kitchen sponge and - isn't it a good day when you find art supplies in the ordinary? 😺
I can’t wait to get out my magazines, books, sandpaper and stencils to start my journey in my art journal with your amazing inspiration! Thanks so much for sharing your techniques in achieving beautiful pages with things I never thought of. ❤
Hello there. Thank you. It really makes me happy to hear this. I hope you make gorgeous and fun pages. Keep me posted on how they turn out. Oh, and I love your profile bio: bad*ss with a good heart. 😺Keep up the good work. Kelly
This was awesome. I've never really liked using magazine pages. Now with these techniques to degloss them I'm sure they will be so much easier to use and look more like they belong with the other papers I use.
Looking forward to part 2.
TFS❤
He Teresa, I know what you mean about magazine and other glossy images, although I do love a good coffee table book. Usually I use original vintage images in my work that I sell but finding a messy way to age the everyday glossy images has been a blast for making fun pages for myself. Hope you have a creative week! Kelly
This was a fabulous video! Thank you for sharing these techniques. I'm so excited to start experimenting and I am looking forward to your next videos.
Thanks bunches, Anne. I hope you make gorgeous pages and have a creative week!
I've tried this with a medium sanding block and a stencil. It was quick, easy and addictive but pretty messy. When finished the paper and my hands were covered with a fine dust. I recommend doing this outside (or in your garage) and maybe even wearing a mask so you don't breathe in the dust. 😊
Hello and thank you for comparing notes. You are sure right about the dust. So colourful yet so...dusty. I live in Wales where we have wind and rain 320 days a year and working outdoors is a rare option (I have to plan ahead to use my blowtorch outdoors in projects otherwise there go the eyebrows). The mask is a very good idea. Thanks again! Kelly
Wow! I had no idea you could scruff up magazine pages like this and use them! I love the look!
❤️💜💚
Hi Paige, it was all new to me, too, until about two months ago. Isn't it great that there is still stuff out there to discover and learn? 😺
What a great technique. You've given us several different options, and the effects are so pretty. I have lots of coffee table flower books I can try this on. And the stencil idea is amazing. Thanks so very much Kelly!
Hi Sandi. You are very welcome. I have quite the stash of flower and plant books. If you keep your eyes peeled they turn up from time to time really cheap and now we know how to make them vintage-y and mysterious. Have a creative Sunday!
I love using paper in my crafts and these techniques will bring my work to a whole new level. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
Thank you, Abby. I hope you make great pages and that you are having a creative week! Kelly
Oh Kelly, I LOVE this video ❤️
Thank you for sharing your techniques with us.
These little things... it is possible to use gesso for blending in a watersoluble pencil, wow.
Looking forward to seeing part 2.
Greetings from Germany 🦋
Hello there. Using gesso or even acrylic gel medium with water solubles for messy, inky looks is one of my all time favourite techniques. It can be a little scary but keep working it into the paper and background and you will fall in love with it. Hope you have a creative Sunday! Kelly
Thank you Kelly for these brilliant ideas and tips. Inspirational as always!
Deborah, you are so welcome, and thank you for those lovely words. 🌷🌻🌼
Thank you so much for sharing these techniques and I loved all the looks you achieved! I have an admitted aversion to working with glossy paper so I will most definitely be trying and playing. Looking forward to Part 2. 🤗
Hi Julie. I have a love/hate relationship with magazines. I keep acquiring them if I find gardening or art magazine second hand, and I do like a good, old-timey decorating magazine, but using them in my work is NOT my style. But having found this technique last month has got me slack-jawed at how different the look is with the glossy coat on the pages. It is also weirdly versatile. I hope you have a creative week! Kelly
You are a wonderful teacher! All of these techniques are new to me. Thank you!
Thank you, Diane. I love making (and yes, selling) art but teaching is my vocation. I think that if we can learn to be creatively bold we can change the world so I try to do my bit with some cheerleading and paper altering. Thanks for getting in touch!
What a great technique !! Took the cheesy right out of that rose picture - I’m totally intrigued Kelly…
Hey hey, Cheryl. I cannot convey how much better these even look in person. Hope you give it a try.
You have taken these techniques and made them so Kelly. Thanks for the inspo, and making the use of magazine floral pages much less cheesy!
Hi Regina. Only just discovered this myself and I am going nuts. What else is out there just around the corner, making-stuff-wise???
The pages turnout wonderful. Looks like lots of fun too. Thanks. 🥀
They are also weirdly versatile. I am currently sanding down some plant tab thingies that came from the garden store to make into tags. Go get 'em!
Who would have thought?...you did😊 and thanks for sharing it😊
Hi Susan. I would have thought but this time it came by way of discovering a UA-cam video who did a version of this. I had never seen it done and all I did was take it and run with it. Hope you make some great pages!
I did this magazine page sanding several years ago. You've taken up a few notches! Thank you.
Hi Diane, this is good to hear. Maybe give it another try? It is crazy versatile.
Very fun! Great way to use up all the beautifully printed books no one wants any more but you just can’t put in the recycle bins! 😂
Yes, indeed. I collect used magazines because I CAN'T JUST LEAVE THEM THERE and then don't know what to do with them. This technique changes all of that! Happy making. Kelly
Thank you so much for sharing your techniques. I have been contemplating making a medieval journal but have held back because I wanted to include some mixed media art in it but did not know how to go about it. Now thanks to you I can start on it.
Hi Suzanne. What a delightful idea. Please feel free to keep me posted on how that journal turns out! Kelly
So viele Ideen und Anregungen in einem Video 💕Vielen lieben Dank dafür🌻🌼🌻
Merci, Elke. It is my real pleasure. Thank you for getting in touch! I hope you make some beautiful pages! Kelly
After I watched this video I canceled some of my plans for tonight and started sanding glossy pages from my second-hand book of roses. I discovered that the text can be removed completely. I can gradually prepare many pages for my future JJs. The job is messy though and it is best to make just a couple of pages at a time preferably near a sink. Thanks a lot for this awesome session and i can't wait for part 2.
Lena, this made me laugh. I felt the same way when I discovered this technique a month ago. I have been sanding everything in sight since then - greeting cards, old calendars, food wrappers (not even kidding). Thanks for getting in touch! Kelly
Sanding over a stencil…love it! Thank you! 🖤Gilly
Hi there, Gilly. Missed you! I only found this technique a month ago and believe you me, I am now sanding everything in sight.
Oh how awesome ideas and techniques! Must try them soon on my magazine pages, thank you for sharing
Hi Marja. Thanks for touching base. Yes, this technique is addictive but since it's cheap, versatile, and not-fattening, go for it.
Ooohhh myyyy!!!! I am on vacation in a week, and definitely am going to try this. How fun and exciting!! Thank you for sharing!!!
Hi Myshl, this is a perfect project for vacation and on the road. Portable, affordable, and weirdly versatile!
Thanks for sharing this technique.
It is my very real pleasure. Hope you make some gorgeous pages.
What great ideas! I have a bunch of national geographic mags with pretty pages but now I have a new way to utilise them. Thank you! ❤
Hi Georgi. That is one of the best things about this technique. We don't all have access to vintage images but dang, everybody can find used National Geographics, free or cheap, and their photography is the best so it's a win-win and we hit the ground running. Happy making!
Love this technique so much. I have many books with beautiful pages, but they just don’t fit my style of journals. This will transform them into beautiful collage pieces that I can use.
Neva, I was the same. I am attracted to nature and art magazines but not the shiny. I've only known about this technique for a month and it is such a game changer. I hope you have a creative weekend! Kelly
Brilliant. Looks like pure fun with great results
Thanks, Janet. And it is so versatile. 😺
Thank you Kelly! I've learnt a lot from your videos and I'll try this technique now 😊
Hello there, Mana. Thanks for getting in touch. There is something about a technique that turns meh into wow. I hope you make gorgeous pages! Keep me posted!
Wonderful! Love all of these techniques. Thank you so much for sharing. Be blessed. ❤
Thank you so, Katherine, and for your kind thoughts. I am very blessed woman, indeed. 🌷🌻🌼
In the end .... it looks like fabric. BEAUTIFUL! Looks like it would FEEL good as well, like a soft velvet maybe. If you had quilting mags ... that could look awesome too! I loved your distressing technique. New sub. I'll be here for part two. Thank you.
Hi Anita and welcome! Quilting mags and you know what else would be fun are decorating magazines, the ones with the country cottages that we all drool over, and those are all over the place second-hand and cheap. I hope you are having a creative week. Kelly
Your techniques yielded stunning results.
Abstractly over-painting the image is new to me and I will definitely try it. I have done a only the simple step of smearing dabs/splotches of white acrylic paint {usually with my finger instead of a brush) onto the image after sanding just to tone down colors and blur it further. Placing very coarse sandpaper underneath the image and lightly sanding over the top with a finer sand paper yields an interesting mottled effect as an alternative to using a stencil.
Your dripping ink from the top of the collage with the woman was a brave move that gave the collage a bonus wow-factor.
And using the various sized torn altered images as the pages of a mini art journal in and of themselves is a genius idea.
I love everything you do Kelly!.
Thank you for this thoughtful message, Diane. I am going to try overpainting with watercolours today and if it works will be showing that in the follow-up video. I like the idea of sanding over sandpaper - I actually considered trying the cobbled bricks outside my studio (but all that bending down was a pain for my old lady knees😺). And for drizzling, I have rarely met a drizzle I didn't love and if it doesn't work, it's only paper.
First time viewer. I'm in love ❤️ I can't wait to see part 2 😊
Hello and welcome, Merrill. Thanks for touching base and hope we see you again very soon! I usually post on the weekend. 🌷🌻🌼
Thank you for sharing your process. I have some shiny pages that need some distressing! 🥰🇨🇦
Hi Leah. I know what you mean. There is usually this stash and I hardly ever use magazines it's just that sometimes you see them and - you can't just leave them there. Now I am finally working with them. Have a creative Sunday!
LOVE every technique you portrayed!! Thank you! :)
Thanks, Deborah. I hope you make great pages! Kelly
❤ like this very much. I am going to use this idea in a collage for my art room. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Sally, that sounds a great idea. There are soooooo many ways to use this. Thanks for touching base!
I’m loving this! Looking forward to the next one!❤
Thanks, Debbie. Off to prep the next video now. (They take way longer than you might think but it's fun.)
Oh what absolutely brilliant ways to use and adapt these mag images with such wonderful results ! every idea gave me inspiration so Thankyou 😍can't wait to see more ..
Hi Cally. I also have vast stashes of magazines that I pick up second hand and I can't just leave them there (!) and I only discovered this technique last month and now I look at the stash in a whole different way. I hope you make gorgeous pages!
I really liked all the techniques you shared. I was afraid you were going to suggest something chemical and was so happy to see all the wonderful ideas and methods. Thanks for sharing! - Kathy
Hi Kathy. Funny you should mention that as I considered showing the method using acetone/nail polish remover but the chemically smell puts me off (although I do like the effect) so today we just went old school scrape-y. I hope you try it and make gorgeous pages! Kelly
@@BookandPaperArts I definitely will! I’ve got a new project in mind and your techniques are inspiring me. ☺️
This is simply brilliant! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You are so very welcome, Camillia. I am delighted it went over big. Kelly
Wow I looked so good, I enjoyed this video. Thank you for sharing. Lots of Love, Light and Laughter Forever!
Hi Elaine. Thank you for getting in touch and for the Light and Laughter. Back atcha! 🌷🌻🌼
Good to hear from you again!!! How are you, Kelly? Fun, I've done that before, getting that shine off, ugh. Ty for showing your process.
Well hello there, Roksanna. It is good to be back and making again. Now, you can also use acetone (nail polish remover) to take away shine but for me the smell gets old fast. This method is slower but actually can be kind of meditative. Have a creative Sunday!
Ooh another great tip, ty!
Wow..... you are super- creative, I love all those techniques and will try them, thank you so much!!!
Thanks so much, Heide. I am so pleased you think so. 🌷🌷🌻
This is so cool! I never even thought about doing something like this. Thank you! I can't wait for the "fabric-y" paper technique!
Hi Susan. You know, until a month ago I had also never seen a technique like this but now it seems so obvious that it must have been under our creative noses the whole time. Makes you wonder what else it out there for us to find. 😺
Oh my! So glad I found you❤
Why thank you, Denise. I am happy to have been found! 😺Kelly
I Love the stencil technique! Thats new to me and I'll definitely be making some! Thanks for sharing. ❤
Hi there. I hope you make some gorgeous pages. It is a good day when we find a new way to use stencils and a way to make art supplies out of found stuff that's hanging around. 😺
This is so brilliant! Thank you for your time and excellence. Much love and peace from London UK 🇬🇧 ❤😊
You are very welcome, Kari. Thank you for touching base - it really does mean a lot to hear from the outside world and creative people out in it. Kelly from a windy Swansea.
So super helpful and inspiring! Really looking forward to Part 2!! Hope your trip to France yielded some great treasures! xx
Hi Sandra. This is a game changer for me as I usually use original old papers but these are so fun and weirdly versatile that I am hooked. And a video look at my latest haul is coming soon!
Thank you! I love my magazine fodder! This will add tremendously to my art journals and everyday play! Awesome share!!
Hi Sylvia, thank you for the vote of confidence. It truly mean a lot. I love it when someone really "gets" the idea and connects.
Fantastic ideas. Love what the stencils did!❤
Just one more reason to love stencils. One of my all time faves. Thanks for touching base! Kelly
Wonderful video using very doable techniques. Those shiny pages are a turnoff but now I know how to transform them. Looking forward to part 2 and momagami as well as the art journal you come up with. thanks for all the fun ideas.
Hi Helene. I have no idea why I have never seen this technique before last month but now I am scratching and folding any shiny paper in sight and I love it. Hope you make some gorgeous pages!
This is so cool I came into some Sunset Magazines and did not know what to do with them. They look to new and shiny for me. Now I can see potential in the thank you so much!
Hi Kathy. You know what else is good are home decor magazines and you can find the cheap and second-hand everywhere, full of rose-covered cottages just waiting to be made vintage. 😺
Hello Kelly, thank you so much for showing this technique. I have to try this when I'm back home. I'm looking forward to your next video 😍
Hello there, Andrea. It is actually also a good technique for using while travelling. Just get some free brochures from your hiking and find something scratchy and you can make art on the road. Bon voyage.
@@BookandPaperArtsHello Kelly, thank you, you're so right 👍 I will try this. I have cleaning sponges in my campervan kitchen, they should work 👍 have a good time, Andrea
I’m new to your page and omg im soo excited! These are awesome techniques! the top of the page with the arches that you added the charcoal lines plus the dye, it looked so cool, it was mind blowing! I cannot wait to dig through your past videos and to see your future ones as well! Thank you 🙏 🎉😎🩷
Hello and welcome, Shannon. Thank you for this nice message. Yeah, arches are the best but most any stencil, or other texture (I tried a brick with success!) will give texture and interest to the image. I hope you are having a creative week and making great pages! Kelly
Thank you for sharing these stunning techniques! I will surely try them out soon.
It is my real pleasure, Gytha. I hope you make some fun and beautiful papers. Keep me posted! Kelly
Great work ! and in detail ! WOW !
Thanks bunches! Kelly
Brilliant! So happy to see a new video. I just love you! 😊
Well hello there. It is so good to be back. I used to make and load videos while I was on vacation but now I just skip it and enjoy my time away, while missing my studio and making at the same time. 🌷🌻🌼
I love this, Kelly! What a great technique! Definitely going to try this. 👏🏻
Thanks bunches, Sharyn. It is so doable, really easy and weirdly versatile. I can't believe I just ran into this technique a month ago and now I know what to do with my rather vast collection of cheap, coffee table books. 😺
@@BookandPaperArts I have loads of them too!!! What a great way to use them and not waste them! Thanks again!
Wow!! Can’t wait to try these techniques!! Thank you for sharing!!

I sometimes feel that I am throwing out virtual messages in digital bottles and it makes me happy to hear that someone has "found" one. Well, Lori, I wonder how much sanding and softening it would take to work magic on my post-menopausal jowl line? 😱Join me, won't you?
Love this idea, can't wait to try it, thanks for sharing.
Hi Helen. Yes, no time like now to start going through our stash of magazines that we are Going To Use Someday. 😺
Love this idea. So glad I just found your channel.
Thanks bunches. Thanks for finding me. 😺I hope you make great pages! Kelly
Thanks so much for sharing! Such wonderful and creative processes! If you like the derwent pencils, you would probably love the stabilo chubby wooden colored pencils! I got a pack of 18 on Amazon… they look like they’re marketed for kids… that’s a great value, and they work just like the black Stabilo for artists. I’ve had such fun with these. Thought I would share. 💜
Hi Jill and thanks for this. You know, I went through a phase where I wanted to try the stabilo chunky pencils but there were so many choices that I threw up my hands and gave up. Now that you've reminded me I should look again and commit to something!

Thank you, great video. Love the pastels. I have never used them before, but the result came out wonderful!I will have to try this technique.
Yes! A day when I find stuff around the house to turn into art supplies is a good day. 😺
Great ideas. Stencil technique was unexpected and wonderful as I never saw it being used that way. I thought you’d put texture paste in them lol. I have lots of beautiful calendar images, nature images and some books too I could start experimenting with!! Tfs❤
You know, calendars are so overlooked as sources of beautiful images. Also, maybe adding texture paste to the stencilled out areas is an idea in itself. Thanks for comparing notes!
Great ideas to share with my grandchildren 😊
That is such a good idea. It is easy and the transformation will enchant them and then you can use the pages to make more stuff. Perfect. Let me know how it goes! Kelly
Love these techniques!

I can't wait to try these distressing techniques on some magainze pages. (I have a big box of magazine pages I've collected over 30 yrs.) I play w/collage, but hadn't thought of sanding back the gloss. Thanx!
Hi Teresa. I have some magazines mostly like this as I can always find them no matter where I am travelling.
