I can't see the Mountain West Conference dissolving to join a conference with two teams. There would have to be some crazy realignment in order to bring other schools into the premier G5 conference, and even then, I can't see the Pac-2 leading the way for another realignment wave. I think that Oregon State and Washington State will eventually join the Mountain West Conference.
Money talks. If the top 4 or 5 teams can increase their yearly TV deal from 5M (MWC) to 15M (rebuilt Pac with OSU, WSU and the top G5 teams) they will leave in a heartbeat. It doesn't have to be a "Power5" conference, it only has to be the No. 5 football conference to get in on the playoffs every year. Tacking OSU and WSU onto the existing MWC barely moves the needle.
@@atgdcommish608 it's the same conference either way. Dumping Nevada, New Mexico or Utah state and adding Memphis and Tulane will not add an extra $10 million per year.
I would love to see the PAC-12 rise from the ashes! I hated that the Huskies and others left the PAC. I am loyal to teams most of all. I will stay loyal to the UW Huskies, probably until I die. God could change my heart. But, I hope my number 2 team, the Wazzu Cougars will come out better from this as well.
@randyr1952 you're right. I'm not sure how we could ever claim an auto bid in a 12 team playoff, however, I do think the Pac-12 team has a better path to an autobid than other Group of 6 (formerly G5) schools. The conference champion of the Pac-12 conference will likely have played the best schedule, and will most likely be the highest ranked G6 school most years.
To the disloyal 4.....as a UNLV fan...i say we take the millions of dollars we're gonna get for the poaching of the MW and use that money to do what is necessary to make UNLV attractive to the BIG 12. I don't want UNLV to move from the MW (a G-5 league) to the PAC-12 (another G-5 league). UNLV has the facilities, plays at Allegiant Stadium, has the capability to host big time college football games, Las Vegas is the sports capitol of the west coast, and I believe UNLV is a sleeping giant in college sports and could be attractive to the BIG 12.. We've proven to be able to compete with the BIG 12 (see 2 wins against HOUSTON and KANSAS). The BIG 12 should be UNLV's goal....not the PAC whatever they are.
It has a few good football programs, but you have to admit it’s a heck of a basketball conference, San Diego state went to the championship last year and this year they will have multiple teams four to possibly six teams in March madness.
There should be football only conferences, so that the other sports don’t have to make the long travels. That’s important for sports like baseball and softball, or any that similar 3 game series.
The pac should take the top schools from the MW and AAC in 2 years. Taking bottom schools from the MW will hurt OSU and Wazzu. Stanford and Cal will join the pac once the ACC goes down, as it’s clearly going down that route.
I believe the idea has always been that PAC 2 was going to absorb the Mountain West and call the new conference PAC 12. Sounds easy but there is much paperwork involved to make it happen. The current Mountain West commissioner came from the PAC 12.

I muster all of the self-restraint I have to avoid vicious name-calling. You actually believe that the Power conferences will allow The PAC 2 to elevate twelve MWC lovelies to Power status and enjoy a Power school share of the playoff money? Twelve promotions in one fell swoop? Please, please, look at this from other angles. You will see that it is far more likely that the MWC grows to 14 members by adding WSU & OSU. TWELVE PROMOTIONS AT ONCE!!?? REALLY? REALLY?
What is the deal with the Lobos? All of the surrounding states have at least 1 power 4 level school as well as professional sports. I understand that they have a low population but they have more than Nebraska. Heck Boise state at least has some semblance of relevance. Why can't the New Mexico Lobos take advantage of their market monopoly even if it is on the smaller side?
@@LockedOnCollegeFootball duh but why? No NFL, NBA, MLB, No power school. It seems odd when you look at the market. Albuquerque can certainly support 1 of those things. The Lobos seem like an untapped market.
I do like MWC Basketball, it would be sad to see the conference break up, but as a die hard Boise state football fan I think that OSU, and WAZZU should take most importantly Boise St, SDSU, Fresno St, Air Force, Colorado St, and Wyoming and add New Mexico, Nevada, UNLV, and Utah St for basketball. Bottom line is while I really do hate the idea of leaving San Jose St, and Hawaii out, they just aren’t seen as very prestigious quality programs in either football or basketball. I could see the case to leave out Nevada and New Mexico as well, but they do bring value in basketball especially New Mexico.
West coast power 5 schools is probable but it’s hard to see because mountain west fan base sucks unless it’s Boise or Fresno the rest are crap bring back Stanford and cal and maybe it works but you have to get rid of Ivy League fill that’s why pac-12 failed
Lol whats the saying misery loves company....since the PAC 12 dissolved this guy is trying putting it out in the universe so other conferences can dissolve 😂
The Pac will be rebuilt, the financial incentives make it inevitable. If the best move for OSU and WSU was to join the MWC, they would have done it already. The Pac has a 2 year grace period to rebuild, and incoming residual cash from football (2 years) and basketball (6 years) to pay the buyouts for the top G5 teams. Become the clear No. 5 football conference and they have an easy path to the 5th automatic bid. Add a few good hoops teams and they add basketball cash too.
My plan would be something like this: OSU + WSU (Pac2), add some football prowess (recent 10 game winners) like Tulane, Fresno State, Boise State, Air Force, UTSA and New Mexico State. Pick up some hoops power with Gonzaga (hoops only), Memphis (also won 10 in football), UNLV (history/arena/market), and San Diego State (recent NCAA finalist). Then throw in a few bigger TV markets if that helps the TV contract: San Jose State (SF Bay area), Colorado State (Denver), North Texas (Dallas) and Rice (Houston). It still wouldn't be a "Power" conference, but it would earn a lot more than the MWC or AAC, and be all west of the Mississippi (or on it).
@@atgdcommish608 Yep, I think things progress these lines. The ACC will break up from the loss of FSU as others will want out too. The SEC and B1G will sweep up the best of the ACC.
