  • Lisa Gade reviews the Nokia Lumia 830 on AT&T. This Windows Phone 8.1 “Lumia Denim” 4G LTE smartphone has a 5”, 1280 x 720 IPS display with the Glance feature and the touchscreen works with gloves. It has a very good 10 MP PureView rear camera with OIS and a Zeiss f/2.2 lens with LED flash. This is an upper mid-range phone that looks much like the Lumia Icon / Lumia 930 with a metal frame and matte black finish, but the back is removable and grants access to the battery, nano SIM and microSD card slots. It runs on the 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 quad core processor with Adreno 305 graphics, 1 gig of RAM and 16 gigs of internal storage. The Lumia 830 sells for $99 on contract and $450 full retail on AT&T. Microsoft Store is bundling it with a free Fitbit Flex.

    The 830 is definitely my next phone. I've been using a Lumia 520 for the past 18 months and it's been absolutely brilliant. Even on low-end hardware (old low-end hardware now) Windows Phone still pretty responsive and still works great, even after upgrading to 8.1 which is quite a bit heavier than older versions of WP.

    Why do so many people bitch about the app gap on windows phone? Its very annoying to hear and instead of reviewers mentioning the good quality of apps windows phone has all they can do is mention the "app gap". SMH.

    • @hotrod2391
      @hotrod2391 9 років тому +7

      Because people are now slaves to apps. They can't like without those apps which is really disturbing. Those people will like their phone instead of having sex. That's low how these people have become. Social but they don't know how to communicate face to face nowadays.

    • @crocc7302
      @crocc7302 9 років тому +6

      They mention app gap but if they review android, they would not mention all this crap and fake, usless apps im GPlay...

    • @syn010110
      @syn010110 9 років тому +2

      So WP has less apps, so what, that isn't the problem. The problem with both WP and iOS: they're locked down to such a degree you don't even own your phone. You're effectively just borrowing it, even though you paid for it.
      I'll be on Android forever until someone else develops a mobile OS with full filesystem access and root permissions.

    • @crocc7302
      @crocc7302 9 років тому +4

      Corinn Heathers I dont think so. These two are as You said "locked down" but It makes them work faster than android. Skip flagship phones and think about low-end. WP low-end phones are way better than android ones.

    • @syn010110
      @syn010110 9 років тому +1

      Crocc Them being locked down isn't what makes them fast. They're just better optimized. WP is much lighter than Android and iOS is heavily optimized for a standardized set of hardware platforms. The lockdown is bullshit so you'll be forced to only play in Microsoft and Apple's walled gardens. No thanks, I'll pass.
      Android is super inefficient, yeah. I'd much rather have something way lighter, personally, but it's the _only_ mobile OS that gives me almost as much control as I get on my Windows and Linux machines.
      Lollipop's move to ART and away from the dalvik VM should cure some of the inefficiency issues, but it's still a lot more bloated than WP, definitely.
      If WP still had the full filesystem access, freakish customization and tweak power that Windows Mobile 6.5 had, I would be a hardcore Nokia Lumia user. (p.s. I kinda miss my HD2)

    A very nice and thorough review of the 830 for at&t! I like having two phones. Right now I am using my htc one m8 rooted with gpe and also a lumia 920. I use to bash windows phone for no reason until I got a lumia 635. I love how windows phone notifications and their apps load right off the center tiles. Also the way windows phone displays menus and social media just seems more intuitive. I enjoy using both android 5.0.1 and windows 8.1 mobile. Wireless charging call quality and camera on the lumia excells quite high. Not being biased just your everyday consumer.

    Nice review Lisa. Just a minor correction, when you double-tap it unlocks, so you'll get the Lock screen. Glance screen is shown when the phone is locked. Just shows black background and notifications in white (clock, date, missed calls, appointments, messages, emails, and so on). It can be set to stay on all the time, on an interval of time, "peek" which turns it on when you activate the proximity sensor, and off.

    Lisa did your Verizon Icon get the 8.1 update yet, I know ATT and Tmobile Nokia phones were getting 8.1 over 2 months ago. Unfortunately the only UPDATE list Microsoft could give me was only for the Nokia branded Windows Phones. I had to join Microsoft App Studio for free and was able to upgrade my 8x to WIndows Phone 8.1 under Verizon. Some are saying they are stalling because they are going to launch Windows Phone 10 by January.

    Hey, Lisa; Do you know of any phones in the future that will feature a removable battery and microSD card slot?

    • @cuddles6938
      @cuddles6938 9 років тому

      There are other Nokia phones with MicroSD and removable battery, those are mostly on ATT and Tmobile. Check out the Yezz Billy 4.7" it is just $199 unlocked and good for Tmobile or ATT customers. Sold on the Microsoft store, I would stay away from the BLUE Windows Phones I have not read anything good about the quality. It does not have a 4G LTE and Verizon customers may not be able to use it. It also comes with Windows 8.1 already installed which is the only other phone I know of besides HTC M8 Windows Phone on Verizons network. Although seems like the HTC M8 and the HTC 8x on Verizon both have NO SIM CARD issues, some have gotten HTC to send them a new SIM TRAY 2.0 and it has fixed the problem, I have not had the error as often as I did with Windows Phone 8.0 after upgrading to the Developers Version of 8.1 on my HTC 8x through the free Microsoft App Studio sign up.

    Hi Lisa! Quick question: Do you expect that Lumia 830 will be upgradable to WP 10? I just bought an unlocked version that I'm using on T-Mobile LTE and I love it, however, I saw conflicting reports online saying it won't support WP10. Can you provide some input here? Thanks :-)

    You can still use Adobe Flash on Blackberry Phones. The Z10 is basically the same hardware as a HTC 8x and when they finally upgrade the official to 10.3 OS it is pretty darn nice. Jolla is pretty much copying Blackberry's OS with Peek etc, even some Android Phones like Sony are using the Peek feature, dragging from left of the screen to see notifications etc..

      +Gislaine Dittert get the 730, much better value for money, the 730 has better battery life, better screen, the same processor, and even a better camera. The only difference is the build quality, plastic vs aluminium, and the lack of a camera button.

    It has been 2 months since a Verizon online employee said they were out of stock of the Nokia Icons, and were waiting for more to be made. I do not believe that. You can still find the Icon on Amazon for any wireless carrier, of course the other models would just say 930 on the box rather than Icon. Not to mention the Amazon price was $50 cheaper then a Verizon store. Verizon now only has the older Nokia 928 on the website along with the HTC M8 Windows Phone and Samsung Ativ S (I think it is a pretty thin phone but no mention of 8.1 ever coming to it or not). Microsoft should sell the phone with all Antennas even 4G LTE so any carrier can use it and we can buy them straight from Microsoft. I like the Yezz Billy 4.7" Windows 8.1 phone, aside from the Qualcomm 200 CPU it is quad core, not sure how much better or not better it is compared to the 801 processor or the 800 which is used in the Icon. It does however have a MicroSD slot and it is only $199 outright but is still a GSM and HSPA+ 3G phone so that probably leaves out Verizon customers.

    Thank you for the review MobileTechReview My only issue is I'm failing to see how $449 off contract is "affordable" when you can get a handful of other Lumia phones, including the 1330 for cheaper. Will you be reviewing the 735? What about the the 535? Blu has the Win HD, will you be reviewing that one? Those phones are actually "affordable" off contract.

      You probably noticed both the 735 and the 530 shown in this review for comparison purposes. Yes we'll review those too. The 735 is nice for the price, the 530 really is in the low end group.

      Steve Yuan I was looking at the price to buy it straight out. The Fitbit is only for getting it from AT&T on contract. I don't think it's included if you simply wanted to purchase the device off contract.

    Don't waste your money on a windows phone. It's great for antisocial people who only use their phones for basic stuff like browsing and e-mails but people with lives? The apps just, there's no Snapchat and the Snapchat alternative comes with advertisements, random crashes and you could take pictures accidentally while swiping between the no-so-smooth sliding as the official one (the only advantage 6snap has is that there is no line limit and more filters). Instagram has no video upload and the only alternative queues your video for a couple of minutes before uploading, that's if you are successful in taking a video without the app crashing. Tumblr and Kik has not been updated for years and the only alternative for Tumblr is Sapphire and I salute the maker of that app. So getting a cheap Windows Phone will leave you hanging between third party apps and barely banking apps. Just go for last year's Android e.g, Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One or sth. I have a Lumia 920 and I am writing this through it, just don't get the phone it sucks

    • @abattlescar
      @abattlescar 9 років тому +3

      Mohammad, just because people don't have Snapchat does not mean they are antisocial, they're just trying to live their lives like you except they have jobs or work or school that is more important than that crap. Or they don't have enough money because maybe they pay for their own house or stuff that you don't know about. And we all have a life, though maybe not a great and fantastic life with 800 friends who we know nothing of, all the friends you could meet on Kik or Snapchat or whatever are just a load of fluff that you never hang out with, it's friends that you meet in the real non-tech world that really mean something and give you happiness and joy. Also, Windows Phones are probably the fastest running phones with all the apps a normal, life-living individual would need. Sure, Apple and Android has tons of apps that Windows doesn't have, but who need them? Besides that, WP are for people who take pride in having stuff to do and places to go that can't sit around doing nothing all day. And Windows Phone has many, many things that the Android phones do not have.
