Cam reviews the surprisingly great Lumia 830. It's the typical Nokia design language, and very much looks like a slimmed down version of the Lumia 930. It has the same metal chassis and frame, but with 1.3mm shaved off. It also has a removable back cover, with Qi wireless charging built in, interchangeable batteries and expandable storage.
In short: It's a durable, well-made device that feels great in hand, has a brilliant camera and performs well. If you're looking for a new Windows Phone, this could be the one to go for right now.

Bought this Phone last week, not regreting it one bit.
Herbert Bowers lol, why? The nice folks at Nokia gave me insurance against lost or damage with the default warranty, plus my phone really helped a lot with my work this past 3 months. I'm not about to cry over a few dollars.

Thanks Cam, this was a really nice and simple review. I have been struggling for which to buy, the 830 or 930. I'm leaning towards the 830 because it's still 130€ cheaper in here and I'd like to have a slim phone. Plus, from what you reviewed, I feel like the screen and processor isn't as big of a compromise what people try to make it seem.

I know, 930 would make perfect sense! I feel like I'm going to be an idiot for liking the design on 830 better. Either way, it's going to be a massive upgrade from my 800.
IinaTheMagnet This may come a little too late but I'd say you're not idiot when liking the design of 830 better. In my opinion there isn't much difference. 930 is far better than 830 if you're looking for snappy performance in every aspect, but the downside is that since 930 has sharper display and more powerful hardware it consumes more power than 830. Personally, I prefer battery life to performance which means I'd pick 830 rather than 930. As you said, the price difference here in Finland between those two is only 30€, so 930 will be more reasonable purchase, then. If 830's price dropped under 300€ I would grab it immediately.
The screen is not a big compromise but the processor (SoC) is. People who mentioned that WP doesn't need a fast SoC is kidding themselves. Try Lumia 930 (Snapdragon 800) side by side with 730/830/630 (same Snapdragon 400), then you gonna appreciate how fast opening/resuming/processing pic are in L930.
Snapdragon 400 in 830 is more than enough, but considering that high price tag, in my opinion it is better to spend a little bit for L930 (only if u dont mind to lose SD card slot/removable battery/a slimmer size).
Well we all know that argument WP doesn't need high spec bla bla bla...
But remember, if u gonna pay a lot, make sure u get the best of the best. If not, then u r paying for overpriced product.
If WP only need 512mb ram, will u buy a 400usd WP with 512mb ram? Just because it is good with low amount ram, doesn't means it should come with the lowest ram.. We all should get what we paid for.
i had this phone less than a week and i sure can say i love it.....fits my needs and performs as i expect it to be
Good review ... got an 830 about a week ago ... not only comparatively inexpensive but am rapidly coming to the view that it could be the best Windows phone I have had the pleasure of using. I have old eyes ... so no chance I'd notice any shortcomings with the pixel density of the screen.
Another great review cam. Great to see another English mobile reviewer I like pocketnow reviews but always find you focus on camera a little better as maybe you have better knowledge in that area which I appreciate much as camera is a big selling point on phones these days. Someone here said Nokia should make android phones wish they did but MS will never do that. MS should just use Google services e.g playstore then we would all be happy :)

I've owned my Lumia 830 for a little over a year and a month now. The camera is fantastic, the interface is smooth, as well as loading apps and not to mention indestructible! I've dropped this phone and had it knocked out of my hands onto concrete, and not even a scratch oj the screen emerges, but the corners are a different story.(I know, my fault for not having a cover) However my biggest complaints are the lack of apps, I knew what I was getting into when I got this, but I had no idea there would be such a lack, as well as them being outdated to hell! Also, unless unless you have headphones/earbuds, the audio quality out of the speaker is horrendous, I've routed down however that the problem lies within the cover itself, often or not the sound vibrations bounce off it and creates a ear bleeding buzzing noise at high volume. Keep your audio below 16/30 and it should be quieter, but tolerable.So all in all, the components and potential for a iPhone 5-6/ios killer is there, but strongly neglected... I give it a 6.7/10

nice review cam and the phone is really cool but you didn't mention about the very poor front facing camera.
I bought one yesterday. The 920 I had was acting up -- rebooting and shutting down -- so I took the chance. If more people were aware of how all your devices speak to one another with Windows, and how smart Cortana is, the Windows choice would be obvious.
3:26 OM*G !!! I could say that's fake right there, but I know Nokia probably makes the best phone cameras ever, so I guess that's totally real. Amazing.
Just letting everyone know a lot of people dislike windows phones because of the apps but actually if you download an app off the internet called aptoid you have access to a massive selection of android apps plus all of them are free so you can even use it on an android phone for getting free paid apps
Fantastic phone and the App offers are far better now.
I just got an 830 last night. I didn't research Windows Phones at all and now I'm thinking of returning it and getting an Android because of the lack of apps that I use regularly. I love the phone though, decisions decisions...
After 2 months windows phone will work with android for 3rd party app :)

Replaced my old N925 with this. Speed is similar. But where it shines is Camera and battery. 925 display is great though.
I have this phone (and also an Moto Maxx/Droid Turbo). I love the camera, but the apps and IE are kind of a let down - most 3rd party apps that exist aren't updated a lot and are buggy. :(

***** The first number denotes the model. The last two digits tell you which generation of windows phone it is. Eg 520 = 500 series (low end range) and 20 means (Windows Phone 8 device). All the Lumias that launched with Windows Phone 8 end with 20. 520,620,720,1520 etc. The new windows 8.1 devices all end in 30 coz they ship with the next generation of the OS. 500 & 600 is low end, 700 & 800 are mid to high, 900 is premium. 1000 Super Camera Phone, 1300 low end phablet, 1500 high end phablet. 920 gets replaced by 930, 820 by 830 and so on. It's quite straight forward if you're used to it.

***** That's awesome! I want a nice Nokia or HTC windows phone for work. I like my blackberry, but I want to change it up. For a personal device ill stick to Android, but for work, I wouldnt mind an iPhone or nice WP.
Every single flaw mentioned with the screen can be fixed in Settings > Display, where you'll find Brightness Profile and Color Profile. Every bit as bright and vivid as you want after adjusting.

I love this device but i love the clear black panel on the 930. Ive seen a display setting where i can toggle screen saturation etc. Will it give more deeper blacks? Please try it out and let me know. Thanks . great vid

Why would it disagree? Moto is part of android ecosystem which trashes the wp8 one. Its a quality phone with good camera and super smooth like ur 720. Oh and it gets instant updates being moto. No thanks never again wp8 cheap phones when moto g and moto e exist. My sister hated the 620 and shes not a tech geek.

@TravisMcCormick No you're not. I'm pretty happy my 820 and my friends just envy its design. The OS is smooth and easy to use, apps aren't too many in numbers but most of them are good. I wish there were more shooter games though. And I also wish the Skype app improved. It kinda sucks right now

HTC 816, LG G2 is simply getting aged, and it will Lagg after 6 months of use. HTC on the other hand is epic optimization of the software. When it comes to Nokia 830, this phone is just astonishing but the lack of applications is a pain.
