- The reunion episode of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 9 is an all-time great TV moment, not even just a Drag Race moment. Reality tv doesn't get much better than this. Iconic fights, hilarious moments, and nonstop drama led it to breaking in a new era of the show, where every season will have its reunion, and everyone tunes in to see what kind of chaos will erupt amongst the queens. While Drag Race has yet to recreate the magic of this particular reunion, they still try every year.
So today we're going to dive into the behind-the-scenes tea and discuss all the factors that led to the fiery eruption that was this reunion. What was called the season of Best Friend's Race, suddenly turned into WWE Smackdown: Drag Queen edition. A lot of things went down both on the show and off, and we're going to break it all down.
From Valentina's Miss Congeniality title being taken away from her and most of the cast coming for her throat, Farrah Moan finally breaking her silence, Nina Bonina and Shea Coulee having it out, and Alexis Michelle being dragged to filth by RuPaul herself, we have a lot to dive into.

A choice you didn't mention from production was the one to put the Miss Congeniality reveal in the reunion. Like they could have put it during the finale and be done with it, given how popular Valentina is but since they knew that behind the scene, Valentina wasn't the most popular girl, they made the very smart choice of keeping it for the réunion bc they knew it would cause a commotion.

@@diegopinedacamero5451 But seasons 1-3 had the winners knew they won at the end of filming and then everyone had to keep quiet about it until the last episode aired and then film the reunions where they gave out MC. They started the live finales with the little 'mini reunions' in front of an audience because season 3's winner got leaked before it started airing. It would've made sense to just keep giving out MC in the live finales because they had done so since season 4 but yeah it was a great decision to do it for the reunion filmed just after the live finale because since tensions were running so high it was guranteed great TV.
Somehow the miss congeniality announcing flew over my head at the time.. I wonder why the producers thought the season was so “PC”, that they’d feel the need to announce MC at the reunion. Not saying they were brawling and fighting all season, but it was hardly free of tension…

Okay but I don’t actually remember the Tweet belonging to a Valentina fan and I’m quite surprised that nobody has really contested that fact. I’m almost fully certain that it was a troll account run by this muscular gay because I used to follow him and remember seeing that exact Tweet in real time. I couldn’t find the account again if I wanted, though, it’s probably suspended at this point 💀

ive always hated the critique of "the girls get along too well". like, god forbid the girls have a good time, right? i just cant imagine wanting to see people constantly be miserable. drama is fun, too much drama and queens being stressed out and upset isn't fun.
PLus some of the moments, especially with the top four were so fun. Trinity screaming "Penis" lives rent free in my mind.
Thats how Reality TV works because it's controversy creates cash. It's not the girls are having so much fun but it's about not having enough footage to create a story or some type of tension. It's needed whether we like it or not

Exactly, like I thoroughly enjoyed all stars 7 with the queens just having fun. I mean, I love a good drama moment but there's nothing wrong with queens getting along too.

Can we tell facts tho. The downplaying of Nina’s depression (and also the downplaying of how Nina was lowkey right) wasn’t cute and also Charli did infact break her rib (or something like that) but had to keep changing stories to save productions ass (peppermint confirmed it in the Yuhua Hamasaki video you can look it up)
that charli fact is so depressing :( i hadnt heard that before. poor girl just trying to help the producers out so she can have her moment and instead was turned into a joke :(

Yuhua sped up the segment where pepp spilled the tea and ppl slowed it down and she spilled many secrets including how a lot of ppl got hurt during the cheerleading challenge and charli injured her ribs. This is also the alleged reason why yuhua had her change the name of her show from bootleg fashion photo review to bootleg opinions. It was a huge thing for a while. U an probably find the videos on reddit or maybe on youtube from someone else.

Both the S9 finale and reunion were iconic moments that production has tried so hard to recreate ever since but they haven’t been able to do so!
They seem to miss the point. It's not always about that drama, but they want to enforce it like their lives depend on it.
@@iandean1112 agree with missing the point. Honestly you just need a good set of queens, challenges and lipsync songs, and then the magic just happens. S9 had barely any shenanigans made by production, like the whole chocolate thing, lalaparuza, 6 queens lypsyncing together, villain edits for random queens etc, and that's why it was so good.

I’d LOVE a mini video on Charlie Hides - like, how she was received, whether it impacted the UK seasons, which of her many excuses was the right one, I think her arc and after show stuff has been fascinating
This reunion is up there with Flavor of Love as one of the greatest in reality tv history.

I think Alexis deserved those reads, she called people prostitutes and talked about peoples looks, and Sheas teeth, but soon as a queen call her fat she ready to cry, she got off light at the reunion
I think 11 and 14 were also iconic. The "you can direct it this way when you're done with Yvie" and the argument between Daya and Jasmine with Kornbreads face in the background were so damn good. But you're right. In general it wasn't something new and revolutionary
i would definitely put this in the top 5 best drag race episodes in the entire franchise (international included).
I've been looking forward to this! Farrah & Aja WON this reunion, it's one of my favourite episodes.
Tbh, I do wish that after what happened in Season 9 that we got both a separate Fan favourite and Miss C award - that would make so much sense to me.
Why give a prize to a fan favorite when she's already won the best prize which is a set of fans and followers who will give her everything when the show ends? Lol

Earlier in the season there was a whole discussion about not joking about eating disorders...and then Alexis is told that she needs to be okay with jokes about her weight.

Everything was perfect on this season. Yes, including Valentina's shocking elimination, Sasha's surprising finale performance and The Iconic Reunion.
ofc i agree about season 9 being the greatest reunion ever but i think s14 is by far the best second one. we got daya vs jasmine, everybody vs jasmine at some point, iconic reads by maddy, candem's "oh man", kerri being a great narrator along the whole thing, and a lot of heartfelt moments like candem and angeria or willow and kornbread. so much better than s10, s11, s12(lol) and s13 reunions
And to this DAY, I'm still pissed that Alexis Michelle didn't get more shit for blaming the other queens for HER fashion choice that cost her the win for the Kardashian Rusical.
Honestly, they all should have Nina Bonina'd her ass and turned away. She was the only one in the moment that was not listening to any of AM's bullshit.
I think the reason behind that is because
- none of the queens took it personally.
- she blamed the whole cast instead of a single queen.
- Farrah pointed out how ridiculous the situation was.
- everybody knew it was Shea’s to win. Alexis could never outdo her runway. Nina being upset about the black Chyna roll wining, was an nice bonus

I know that I am in the minority, but I really liked Alexis Michelle. She was one of my favorites in the season and I saw what production was doing to her. it upset me. I still love Alexis Michelle and can't wait to see her come back.
I've seen her in another show with her, Juju, Bebe and Thorgy, and honestly she's veru lovely. Even when watching s9 I didn't dislike her, I was surprised when I got to know thay ppl hated her

I think the main problem right now is production is trying way too hard to re-create Season 9, and it isn't working. They need to be a little more hands off, let things play out, and stop trying to create the drama. OR, cast people who don't mind being jerks on camera. That's literally the only options they have left. It's the only reason Daya Betty saved Season 14 and The Vixen saved Season 10.
Season 9 was something you can't capture again. I think of it as the AS2 of the main series. They keep chasing that glory and miss it ROYALLY.

My all time favorite reunion moment will always be Katya arriving in full “Russian hooker who set herself aflame with her own cigarette” glam. No one will ever be more bitter about Katya losing than me. 😂 but I’ll always live for the drama that happens in every other season

I believe farrah could be a very good queen, shes very polished however theres so many room for acquiring talents like sewing and other skills that may or may not come for most. But she does makes a great tv! Aja is one of the most underrated queen I think shes always overlooked, especially in All Star, I'm impressed by her growth and glow up.
Alexis’s situation did age well cuz at the end of the day, she read other girls and even read Shea on something she was self conscious of as well. Alexis could dish it but she couldn’t take it. Period.

I just hate how Alexis was body insecure about being heavier and everyone told her 'take a joke' after she expressed she was insecure but when Eureka poked at Valetines and Sasha they said 'don't say that'. And Eureka didn't even know there eating was disordered.
